Chapter 01.1
Vallondres and the Young Arc
Amidst the busy streets of Vallondres , one of the Four Great Capitals of the Kingdom of Vale, it was possible to see the young heir of the prestigious and noble Arc family, Jaune Arc , walking slowly along the sidewalk.
His steps were slow and draggy, as if he really didn't have much energy at the moment.
"I've wasted half my day…", muttered the boy.
Disappointment was clear on his face.
' Three hours… Seriously, they interrogated me for three hours…? ' thought Jaune.
The disappointment, previously present on his face, gradually began to turn into indignation, soon after being replaced by anger.
Slowly, he sucked air through his mouth straight into his lungs. He held it for a few seconds, before finally exhaling through his mouth… in the most extravagant way possible.
"It's not my fault!", Jaune shouted with all his might, scaring the people who passed around him. "It's not my fault that a highly wanted criminal with blond hair was also seen in Vallondres today! How was I supposed to know, huh?!"
The people, who had previously walked beside him, began to slowly move away. It was a little strange to see a blond teenager yelling random things at the sky. No, forget about it. That was "VERY" weird! It's not every day you see something like this.
Ignoring the people around him, he took a deep breath and slowly calmed down.
'Alright, I need to think about my next steps…'
The boy looked down at the black leather bag he was currently carrying over his shoulder. Luckily, he had traveled with her strapped to him. Thanks to that, he didn't lose any of his belongings that were inside it.
Unfortunately, the same could not be said for her other two bags, which traveled in another compartment.
Unfortunately… it was stolen. Someone had stolen his bags while he was on the run a few hours ago.
Heaving a heavy, long sigh, Jaune decided to put all her problems aside and focus on what really mattered. He came to Vallondres for a reason… I mean, he was actually supposed to be in another city right now.
Unfortunately, he took the wrong transport due to an employee's error and ended up in Vallondres. He only noticed this during his trip, which was not pleasant at all.
Unconsciously, Jaune sighed again.
'Usually I can deal with all this bad luck in a calm and rational way. I'm used to it… I grew up with it. For me, it's completely normal to wake up to the wind breaking my window or an animal trying to eat me for lunch.'
Interrupting her train of thought, Jaune automatically stopped walking. In a matter of seconds, it was possible to hear something breaking in front of him.
] CRACK! [
Looking down, the boy saw what had almost fallen on his head: A vase of flowers.
A flower pot almost just fell on your head. That would definitely cause problems… but it wouldn't be the first time. It probably won't be the last either.
The blond youth just stared at the broken object on the ground. Faced with such misfortune, Jaune only did one thing…. He smirked.
'Hmph! Classic… Good morning to you too, Bad Luck-chan! Today you seem to be angry, but you're going to have to try a little harder.'
An involuntary laugh escaped her mouth.
"S-Sorry sir! Are you okay?! Are you hurt?!" a worried, hoarse voice called out.
Looking in the direction of the unknown voice, Jaune could see an elderly woman, with a worn cane, come out of the same building where the flower pot fell.
'Was she the one who dropped it?' thought the boy. 'She must have worked really hard to get here so quickly. He probably lives on the second floor.'
From what it looked like, the boy's analysis proved correct when he saw the elderly woman panting and a little sweaty. Her shivering form made it clear that she was barely able to stay on her feet.
'But she's really fast, huh...?'
Seeing his misfortune causing harm to someone made Jaune feel guilty. He really didn't like to see people get into trouble, mostly because of him.
"Sorry… Haah … that's why…", The elderly woman was clearly trying to apologize, but her tired and breathless state made it difficult. "I… Haaah … I got scared by a spider… Haah … Giant spider… And accidentally bumped into it…"
"Don't worry, ma'am," interrupted Jaune with a smile. "You can let me clean this up, you shouldn't try so hard."
Young Arc's voice was calm and conveyed his serenity very well.
' In a way it was my fault that this happened… Bad luck really does not leave me .'
The lady was really surprised by this. She thought about turning down the boy's offer, but didn't have time for it. Before she could do anything else, Jaune bent down and started to clean up the mess.
In a few seconds, he already had everything in his hands.
"I need to go now. Please be more careful."
"H-Huh… Of course… Thank you…"
Jaune simply resumed walking and ignored the old woman's surprised look.
'Originally, I should have gone to "Valame"… not to Vallondres. Now it will be more complicated.'
Jaune looked around, watching and analyzing the city. He couldn't help but let out another long, heavy sigh.
How many times has he sighed today?
There were small or large stores everywhere, either through a tent or through a large three-story establishment. This was no surprise to anyone, after all, this is Vallondres, the [Commercial Capital] .
The city's entire culture revolved around capitalism and commerce itself. Money came before almost everything in the city, even the festivals were related to money. The only thing Vallondres considered more important than money was freedom . After all, this is the culture of the entire Kingdom! Vale is the Kingdom of Freedom!
Ignoring everything around her, Jaune glanced at the horizon. He could see the ocean, Vallondres was a port city after all. The center of commerce for the entire Kingdom of Vale.
He also managed to spot one of his biggest enemies… the vehicles! He could see ships leaving the harbor and air vehicles heading towards the airport.
'... One day I will have my revenge...', He thought.
In fact, Kingdom of Vale has four main capitals, each of which is responsible for looking after, managing and influencing some aspect of the kingdom. Vallondres is just one of these four large and important capitals, being responsible for trade and keeping the financial part of the kingdom stable.
Jaune's original goal was [Valame] , also known as the [Scientific Capital] .
'It's no use crying over spilled water.'
Jaune resumed walking through the busy streets of the huge port city. Apparently, tonight was going to be a festival night.
'Let's see… I lost my bags, I got on the wrong transport and I'm hungry…'
Jaune put his hands in his pockets, searching for something.
'... and also lost my wallet.'
His pocket was holed.
"Today is being a complicated day, huh?", murmured the boy. "It's been much worse than usual."
To say Jaune was in trouble was an understatement.
He lost his money, his electronics (which were in his bags), traveled to the wrong city and, to top it all off with icing on the cake of problems, he was hungry and without a place to spend the night.
All he had now was his casual clothes and his leather bag.
Honestly, he was very grateful for always keeping his treasures to himself.
With nothing else to do, Jaune decided to open her bag to try to find something.
"Huh…?"
There was a letter in her purse. In addition to his personal documents, a rectangular black box with gold trim and a few notebooks, he had a folded letter as well.
He didn't remember that letter.
Without taking too long, he opened it and read its contents.
After reading the letter, the boy couldn't help but let out an embarrassed laugh, but also relieved.
' It seems like they know me very well... '
The letter had been written by his grandfather, Lyle Arc , the day before he left. He and his grandmother, along with all his sisters and parents, had foreseen everything that had happened to him so far. From him losing his bags, even him losing his money.
Thanks to that, they sent an extra amount to young Arc's bank account. Now he just needed to find a bank, which wouldn't be too hard to find in Vallondres.
…it was embarrassing actually…
His family was also extremely used to his bad luck. In fact, this is not such an impressive thing. They had to take care of Jaune since childhood. So for them, it was totally common to have to renovate the boy's room every week or pay a doctor to go and take care of his wounds.
During his ten years, there was a time when a tree ended up collapsing in a strong wind and destroyed the boy's entire room. He came out unharmed, but it wasn't by luck, but rather because he was running from the angry raccoon that had entered the residence.
Bad luck screws Jaune, but bad luck also saves him. Bad luck doesn't live without Jaune, and Jaune doesn't live without him. That's why the young heir of House Arc affectionately nicknamed bad luck "Bad Luck-chan".
Folding the letter and putting it back in her bag, Jaune began to look around. He needed to locate himself.
'Anyway, I need to find a place where I can get the money and buy a ticket to Valame.'
Thus, the boy resumed his walk.
It took a few minutes, but eventually he stopped walking and looked straight ahead. Doubt quickly crept into his mind… He had two paths to choose from.
In front of him was a triangular-shaped building, which divided his path into two possibilities. He could choose between following one of two paths.
One of these paths was the street that passed to the left of the establishment, which was downhill, and the other was the street that passed to the right, which was uphill.
Jaune smiled carefree.
"Mom always said: When in doubt which way to go, follow the hand you write!"
The smile on his face soon disappeared.
"But I write with both hands…"
He decided to ignore that and simply walked towards the street on the right.
In a few seconds, his face returned to that of a person unconcerned with life. It's impressive that he manages to have such a light and calm expression… Especially considering his bad luck.
Stopping in her tracks and looking into a shop window, Jaune stared at her own reflection: Messy, disheveled blond hair; a normal body, without much muscle, and of tall stature.
Even so, what caught his attention the most were his clothes: white sweatpants (completely dirty); an old flip-flop and a long-sleeved black T-shirt covering her body.
' … Man… I really need to learn how to groom myself, don't I? '
Gradually, his carefree expression disappeared from his face, slowly being replaced by a sad countenance. Even if it was something barely noticeable on his face, the boy's eyes seemed to hide feelings... Mainly hurt and longing.
' I never had to worry about it. ' thought Jaune. ' She always helped me with that… '
Jaune quickly changed his expression from one of sadness to one of strong and deep determination. His eyes, once similar to a well of sorrows, now seemed to convey a pure and endless will, like the strongest of the flames created by mankind.
' I'll get you Bra— '
Jaune broke off his train of thought when he heard people yelling… at him?
Looking in the direction of the voices, he saw something he didn't expect. A flying suitcase!
'. .. Bad Luck-chan… You really tried hard this time, huh? '
Just before the suitcase hit his face, he managed only one thing to say.
"Shit."
And her world darkened as she felt something smack her in the face.
Knocked out by a suitcase. That was a first.
…
…
…
…
Ache…
All Jaune could feel was pain. Fortunately, the pain remained only in his head. However, it was not an ordinary pain. It started at his forehead and worked its way down to his chin, even past his eyes and nose.
Tired of the darkness surrounding him, Jaune began to slowly open his eyes.
It took a few seconds longer than usual, as the pain prevented him from doing it properly.
After a few seconds, which seemed like minutes to him, Jaune managed to open his eyes. It didn't do much good at first, as everything was blurry, but gradually his vision started to return to normal.
"A flying suitcase. This one is new-!", Jaune stopped talking abruptly.
It was difficult for Jaune to take in what was before him. It seemed so… out of the ordinary that it even took her brain a few seconds to finally process what was in front of her.
She was a girl.
Not just any girl, but one of the prettiest he's ever seen in his life. She wasn't just "beautiful", but rather "inhumanly beautiful". It was like looking at an angel, but not the normal angels with a human body and two wings, but a real angel described in the Great Church bibles. It was a haunting and complex beauty, yet simple and delicate at the same time.
'…Beautiful…' was the only thing Jaune could think of. 'She is beautiful…'
Facing Jaune stood a beautiful young teenage girl a little shorter than he was, with skin almost as fair and shiny as snow reflecting sunlight. Her eyes, naturally sharp and rigid like two blades of ice, in light blue color, they matched perfectly with her glowing skin and her long white hair, as white and gleaming as the winter snow.
It also didn't go unnoticed by Jaune his scar. It was small, but the young blond noticed that it had a small scar that ran vertically down the left eye.
It's impossible not to find a girl like her a beauty, but apparently being beautiful by nature is not enough for her. Her hair was tied in a side ponytail and secured with a silver icicle-shaped tiara, along with her white clothes, made her even more beautiful.
"..."
"..."
The two remained silent.
It was only then that Jaune remembered something: He never had any interaction with anyone!
Due to the bad luck Jaune grew up with, his family never allowed him to leave the house. It was very rare for Jaune to leave the house... but every time he did, something catastrophic happened.
For example, there was a moment when a bridge collapsed, another when a block was destroyed, a storm that was marked as the strongest of the century came on his birthday and there even happened to be people trying to take him to prison.
In short, Jaune never had a very good social life. The total number of times he left the house was less than 10.
'Shit... HOW DO YOU TALK TO A GIRL?!'
In pursuit of achieving his goals, Jaune Arc was about to face one of his biggest challenges... social interaction!
[Continued in Chapter 1.2]
N/A: Hey! How are you? This chapter was just a small introduction to the world and the protagonist, Jaune Arc, always accompanied by his devastating bad luck. I personally consider the next chapter to be the true beginning of everything. Hope you like! I used chapter 1.1, 1.2 and 2 to explain a little bit about this new world, his condition and the Grimms. Relax, the next chapter has almost no explanation, I don't like exposition.
Oh sure, don't forget to let me know if anything is wrong or inconsistent. Everyone makes mistakes, so please help me when this happens. Any criticism, you can tell me!
I'm writing this story through a different mechanic: Multiple possibilities. In that chapter, for example, Jaune would have met another member of the RWBY team if he chose to go left instead of right. However, he went to the right. Why? I used dice, like we do in tabletop RPGs. When it's a better time, I'll explain in detail how this mechanic works.
