*Chapter: So Do We Have A Baby?*
"So have you felt any of the symptoms yet? Nauseousness, fatigue, etc?" The doctor asked Chie.
"Yeah, I felt most of those." Chie replied, the doctor nodded before typing in something onto a computer.
"Increased appetite?" Yu snickered before being socked in the side by Chie, apologizing. He had to pick up at least double what they usually buy at the grocery store for Chie last week. He remembered how during the Summer Festival in his Second Year of high school with Chie saying how he liked a girl who could eat…and he was going to keep to his promise no matter how painful it was going to get.
"Well, I already know your metabolism is abnormal for a woman your age so it may be…increased during your pregnancy. I'm sure Mr. Narukami is looking forward to having to care for you and the little guy's hunger." The doctor said, chuckling looking at Yu, who looked mortified. "...i might have to tell the principal if i can take a few extra hours." Yu muttered under his breath.
It was a few weeks after their honeymoon and both of them were anxious for their new child. Yu noticed that Chie had a slight bump in her stomach growing, knowing that what he saw on that pregnancy test was real and not a typo. So they decided to go to a doctor to see if anything was wrong and to confirm that Chie was indeed pregnant.
He remembered going to Yosuke's place a day or two ago and helping him prepare for the birth of his and Yukiko's children, who were expected to be born next week. "Y'know my dad told me something before in our old future. He said being a parent is tough and you're gonna have to give up a lot of things in your life. But…the love you'll have for your child cannot be described." Yosuke said, smiling while nailing a crib into the wall.
"I can confirm from first hand experience, what he said was completely true. I know I had to give up a lot of things like hanging out with you guys, having a VERY active sex life with Yukiko, and hanging out at the old bar us dudes went to. But…I didn't care after a while cause I loved Yasuhiro and Nari so much that…nothing else in the world mattered." Yu could see Yosuke's happiness in the fact that he would be reunited with his children and were having a new addition to the family soon. "Been a long time coming, huh?" "Oh, you have NO idea."
Back in the present, the doctor talked a bit more with Yu and Chie, recommending the correct diets and daily routines and suggesting Chie not take any dangerous tasks at her police job, giving her a doctor's notice to give to her chief. Yu was given a ton of books and pamphlets for him and Chie to read over, stuff like sleeping, eating habits, symptoms, what to do to improve their baby like…playing classical music. Not the weirdest advice he's been given in all honesty.
"Well uh, can we do the thing?" "Thing?" Yu asked, looking at the doctor who realized something and nodded. "Ah yes, your ultrasound. I have it prepared in the other room. This way, please." The doctor said, leading them into another room, a giant ultrasound machine with a bed for Chie to lay on. Yu sat on a chair, while Chie laid on the bed. The doctor typed something into a computer with Chie's info on it as he booted up the machine.
"No need to be nervous, all that's gonna happen is some slight discomfort with the gel. It's pretty cold from what I hear." Chie rolled her shirt up, revealing her stomach as the doctor squirted some gel from a tube.
"Geez, it's freezing!" Chie gasped. "Is it bad?" Yu said, worried about seeing his wife with discomfort in her face. "Nah, I'm fine. Unless Dr Hashido is trying to make me into a popsicle." Chie said, turning towards the doctor who chuckled. "Yes Mrs. Narukami, my plan was INDEED to make you into an ice cream bar. Now the machine should be warmed up so let's get this show started." The doctor said, placing a small device on the gelled parts of Chie's stomach, humming a small tune to himself as he scanned for a minute or two.
"How's it lookin' Doc?" Chie asked, feeling a bit impatient.
"Looking good so far. The heartbeat's the right pace, the size is normal. Seems like they're doing well." The doctor said, turning the monitor towards the two of them.
"Geez, look at its head! Looks like an alien!" Chie said, laughing.
"Can you tell the gender yet?" Yu asked, looking at the monitor closely.
"Hm, not currently. It'll take a few more weeks before we know that. We'll schedule another appointment for you if you want to know however." Yu looked over at Chie and both of them smiled at each other.
"Actually, Dr Hashido, we'd like for the gender to be a surprise. If that's possible, of course." Yu asked.
"That's all right. I know for some couples, surprise is the best part of childbirth. I remember my wife asked that for all of our children. Though it did make it awkward when I bought girl's clothes for my newborn son." Dr Hashido said, chuckling to himself. "Anyways, any questions or concerns from you two?"
They talked with Dr Hashido for a bit more before getting the prenatal vitamins from the front desk and heading out.
"Soooo, guess that confirms it! I'm having a baby!" Chie said, hopping around in place before stopping in pain.
"Hey hey, you gotta be careful! There's someone riding along, all right?" Yu said, holding his hands out to make sure she was safe.
"Yeah…it's gonna be a pain not being able to work out as hard as I have. And I can't catch any bad guys and run after them!" Chie said, pouting, staring at her stomach. "I actually hate this baby now! Why can't you keep up with me?" Chie said, tapping her foot, Yu looking at her with a deadpan stare.
"All right all right, so do you want to head over to see Yosuke and Yukiko? Maybe she can give you some advice?" "Yeah that sounds good. Oooh, could we go to Aiya's though? I wanna have 2, no 3 beef bowls!" Chie replied, Yu looking nervous.
Yu saw Chie running over to Aiya's, him following close behind. He was scared of how many bowls Chie was going to get through after all was said and done.
