'JJ,' Luke groaned. He was just starting to come around. The pain in his back growing with every moment he woke. Panicking he remembered the look on that creep's face standing over JJ. He winced as he moved slightly. It worried him that he had no memory of anything happening to his back, or why it hurt.
Luke was sure she was lying beside him, but he couldn't see anything through the pitch black, but he just kind of knew she was the object he almost lying on top of. It took him a moment to realise he was squashing her before he tried to manoeuvre himself. It wasn't easy, wherever they were the space was tight. He wasn't sure why they hadn't bothered to tie his hands or feet together. It seemed like a basic move, but he wasn't complaining.
He used his free hands to feel around. He strongly suspected they were in the trunk of a car, in fact if he was wrong about this he wouldn't deserve his job. In the end he had to pull her so she was resting on him instead of him on her. He blindly patted around the rest of the trunk hoping to find something. From what he could tell it was empty. The only thing was JJ, who still hadn't woken.
'JJ.' There was no reply again. He reached out gently, and blindly felt over her head for any wounds. She felt ok. She was smaller than him it made sense, he reasoned, that she would be out longer than him.
'JJ,' Luke tried again. No movement. He held his breath for a couple of seconds listening out for her breathing. He couldn't hear it over the car engine. He forced himself not to panic as he placed his hand on her chest. It was difficult to tell whether it was moving up and down. The road wasn't particularly smooth and JJ's vest was in the way. Instead he hoovered his hand just above her face. The puff of air she let out tickled his hand. She was still breathing.
Now there was nothing to do but wait. He couldn't do anything until she woke. He needed her awake to fight their way out. Staying quiet and not letting whoever was driving them know that he was awake was the best move, but it went against Luke's nature. He wanted to make his escape, but he didn't have enough information yet; and he needed JJ awake.
Luke wasn't very good at waiting, he was getting fidgety. Lying still in the pitch black, in a cramped space was bordering on his worst nightmare. It was only heightened by his imagination about what was going to happen next. Why had this guy taken them? Where were they going? Surely he should have just wanted to kill them.
A groan beside him broke him from his dire thoughts.
'JJ,' he moved underneath her trying to turn towards her. He felt her breath hitch and she started to panic. 'It's Luke, I'm Luke,' he place his hand on her shoulder trying to reassure her.
'What,' JJ's voice came out thick and slurred.
'Give it a minute. It will come back. We were drugged.'
'Luke,' he'd never heard her voice come out so unsure.
'Yes,'
'What's going on?'
'What's the last thing you remember?' Luke wanted to help JJ remember for herself.
'Calling Will,'
'Calling Will?'
'Yes,' she went quiet for a moment, 'I promised him I would call, but then I; then I chickened out.'
Luke didn't know what to do with this piece of information. It was something obviously playing on JJ's mind, but it had nothing to do with the situation they had to deal with now.
'Then what?' He prompted, he needed more information. This phone call could have been last year for all he knew.
'Then we turned on our body cams on and make our way to the bunker.' Luke's relief would have been evident to JJ had they not been in the dark.
'And,'
'I opened the door you led. Oh my god, there was a bomb. Are you ok?' Her hands were touching his chest, reassuring herself that he was unhurt.
'Yes I'm fine. Remember, we started running but,' he stopped mid sentence waiting for her to remember.
'But what? I can't, I don't know,'
'It was like a stun grenade, but worst.' She stayed silent waiting for him to finish. 'JJ,' he placed his hands on top of hers which were still placed on his chest. He started whispering now, he wasn't sure why it just seemed to be the right tone to use. 'We've been taken. We're in the trunk of his car now.'
JJ's immediate silence was not how he expected her to take the news. He wait a few seconds for the news to sink in.
'We need a plan. Why didn't he tie us up?' She whispered back. The way she reacted was so JJ, he wonder why he had imagined anything else.
'I don't know. He injected us with something. It knocked us out. I woke up in here with you, we were already moving.' Luke finished getting JJ up to date.
'Are you ok? Is it just one guy?'
'I'm ok JJ,' he spoke slowly so she would believe him. 'I only saw one guy,' Luke's mind was already worrying about the attention he was giving to JJ as he was passing out, 'Wait, no there was two. One of them was driving the car.'
'Two guys. Tall, well built? What are our chances?' JJ wasn't messing around. Luke was kind of impressed with her one track mind.
Luke faltered, his memory was a little hazy. He supposed just like JJ's was. The first guy was pretty normal, but try as he might he couldn't remember the second guy.
'Luke?' JJ questioned carrying on their quiet conversation.
'I can't remember the second one. The first one was pretty average.'
'What do you think? What's your gut telling you?' For the first time Luke was glad it was JJ he was with.
'Not to come out of the trunk fighting. I think we need to get some more information first.'
He felt her head nod against his shoulder in reply. Perhaps it wasn't the answer she wanted, but Luke stood by his recommendation. When she didn't say anything else he spoke again:
'You think we should come out fighting?'
'What if it's our only chance?' Her voice portrayed uncertainty. Luke felt like she wasn't even behind the idea of coming out fighting. She just wanted to voice the scary possibility.
'The team will find us; no matter what.' Luke just hoped that the "no matter what" wasn't them finding their bodies.
'They will,' JJ didn't hesitate.
