Hello everyone, once again I am sorry about the lack of content. Unfortunately my writing will is a bit weak when it comes to the early chapters. I have to rewrite them a bit to give more depth and meaning as it's kinda lacking in game. You'll see an example of this here. Anyways, here's the first true chapter of Okeanos, please enjoy!
Okeanos: Pirates of Chaldea
The first thing that Cira noticed when she regained a sense of self was the smell of salt and…something quite awful. She opened her eyes and immediately froze. They didn't land in the water at least, but neither was it an abandoned island.
It was a ship. A pirate ship. And there were some very none-too pleased to see them pirates before them.
She heard the scrape of Mash's shield against the wooden deck of the ship as her communicator chirped and Romani's image flashed up before her eyes.
"...Well, we never did try to Rayshift to an ocean before…" Mash muttered.
"I think that's the least of our worries…" Cira replied.
"Yes, I understand what you're trying to say," her friend sighed, "Doctor do you have any excuses?"
"Uh...I claim Murphy's Law. And hey! At least you didn't have to wait 28 years before you got rescued off an island!" Romani sputtered, "And you have some transportation!"
Before Cira or Mash could fire off a response, they were cut off by a particularly loud pirate clearing his throat and the rasp of steel against steel made Cira's hair stand on end as he took his cutlass out of it's sheath.
"Mash," she whispered.
"I dunno where you two girlies came from," the pirate said, "But you's on our ship. And, well, don't think there's much of ya to be playthings. So it's off the plank with ya!"
"Yeah, no, I don't feel like having a swim," Cira shook her head, "Mash…?"
"On it!"
Mash dashed forwards, her shield materializing in her hands as she swung, nailing a pirate in the stomach and lifting him off the deck of the ship. Cira hunkered down and brought her communicator up to eye level.
"We're gonna have a looooong chat when we get back, Doctor," she hissed, keeping an eye on Mash as she grabbed a man and basically tossed him to the ground.
"Yeah, yeah I know I'm sorry ok?" Romani sighed.
"Master!" Mash's voice rang out, tearing Cira's attention back to her.
The man she had thrown onto the deck currently had his hands up as the bottom arm of the cross shaped shield lay firmly on his chest and pinned him on the deck of the ship.
"We've come to an agreement to talk," Mash continued.
"Well, that was fast," Cira muttered, getting up and starting towards Mash, though it was…difficult as the ship swayed, "Oh god no not this again…"
She managed to make her way to Mash and the other girl released the man and helped him up.
"I don't like getting rough, sorry," Mash apologized, "But I had no choice but to get a bit violent,"
"Fair," the pirate sighed.
"Mind if we ask some questions?" Cira asked, "I'd rather not get into a fight again so please say yes,"
"Don't see why not," the man huffed, rubbing his chest, "Seein' as how you're likely just to keelhaul me if I don't,"
Mash gave a wince and Cira shrugged.
"To be fair, you did try to throw us overboard first,"
"Fair enough," the man chuckled, "Name's Jack,"
"Cira," Cira offered her hand and the man shook it, "Mash here is my best friend and is the one who gave you a thrashing,"
"In any case…could you tell us where this ocean is and what is going on?" Mash pressed, "As you know we just appeared here,"
"We've no clue about it either, Missy," Jack shrugged, "Before we knew it we were afloat here. Our compasses and maps are completely useless too,"
He dug into his vest pocket and produced said compass, Cira could see the needle spinning around like a top and not stopping at North.
"When ya got no clue what's goin' on, see, ya just attack the prey right in front of ya, right?" he explained, "It's the pirate's way,"
"Wait you're saying you had no idea who we were?" Cira blinked, "And you didn't know if it was safe to do so, and you just attacked us,"
"Hey, I never claimed to be smart," Jack scoffed, "t'wd be in one of those universe cities and all if I was,"
"What now?" Mash asked quietly, looking up at Cira.
"I have no idea…" Cira sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose, "Do we have any other leads?"
"Well, Missy Cira, I might not know much 'bout this place," Jack offered, "But I might know someone that does. There's a Pirate Island nearby, me crew's runnin' outta food and water so there might be the best chance. Heard that the Captain might know a thing or two that might help ya out,"
"...Would there be a lot of pirates on Pirate Island?" Mash asked, a bit more warily than anything.
Jack stared at her.
"And ya think I'm not sharp," he roared, laughing, "Of course there's a bunch 'o pirates there!"
"Well, we don't have any leads that feel like leads," Romani said, "Might as well tag along,"
"If we get skewered or thrown to the sharks, Doctor I'm haunting you," Cira groused.
"Well, with that being said…" Mash murmured, casting a golden glance at Jack, "I hereby exercise my rights as victor. Please man the wheel and head towards Pirate Island,"
"Aye, aye, sir!" Jack grinned.
"That would be aye, aye ma'am!" Mash growled.
"Oh I like you," Jack cackled, turning to the rest of the pirates, "ALRIGHT LADS! Ya heard the lady! Get those bums in gear and set course to Pirate Island!"
Cira could not get off that boat fast enough. By the time they'd rowed ashore, she was already green in the face and the side of the rowboat already had the remains of her breakfast strewn over it.
"Take it she doesn't have much a stomach for the sea?" Jack asked, his voice not unkind.
"I hate boats," Cira groaned, wiping her mouth off.
"'Ere ya go, Missy," he offered, tossing her a waterskin, "Drink some of that. Next time…let's sit ya in the middle of the boat. Helps until ya get your sea legs under ya."
Cira gratefully took a sip of the water and handed it back.
"You're pretty nice for a pirate," she pointed out.
Jack gave a soft laugh.
"Ya sound like me wife," he grinned, "My Polly loved the sea as much as I did but well, ya see, her pa didn't care much for me. So we ran away, and had a little girl…she'd be about yer age really. Anna was her name. She got sick and I had to pay for the leech somehow…didn't tell my Polly though. It'd break her heart."
"She doesn't know you're a pirate?"
"She knew I was, but I kinda stopped, ya know? I wanted her to be happy and all," he helped Cira out of the rowboat before helping Mash as well, "Piracy isn't always because we want to. Sometimes it's outta need,"
He gave a small laugh.
"Will over there's gettin' money for a dowry," he pointed at a handsome dark haired man who was hauling the rowboat out of the waves, he then pointed at an older pirate who playfully smacked Will's hat off his head, "Eddie over there just wants a final adventure, didn't want to rot in a bed."
A loud whoop sounded from the forest as a group of very drunk pirates stumbled out of the overgrowth. They locked eyes with Mash and Cira and one of them pointed at the girls.
"Lookie 'ere boys! Not much but hey! A warm body in a bed is better than none!" he leered.
Jack rolled his eyes, pulled out his pistol and fired the firearm with such accuracy that it blew the leering pirate's hat clean off.
"Anyone who lays hand on these two girls is gonna be dancin' with Jack Ketch," he threatened, "Savvy?"
Cira heard Will and Eddie both give choked laughs as the other pirates raised their hands and backed off.
"Alrighty, girlies, let's take ya to the boss," Jack nodded towards the treeline where the drunkards had come from.
"Boss?" Cira asked.
"Well, yeah," Jack shrugged, "The greatest and most feared pirate on the high seas. Francis Drake,"
He led the girls onwards, Will and Eddie flanking behind to make sure no unwanted guests pulled funny business.
"After we get through the forest here, we'll be at Drake's hideout," Jack explained, "The Boss is kinda…tempermental, so uh, keep that in mind. Much like the sea, that one. Fair and calm one day and stormy and deadly the next. Also how much ale was drank…that'll be a good tell."
"So why does he keep talking like he's a grunt?" Romani muttered.
"Setting up one's character is important in any era!" DaVinci's voice replied, "It's even normal to recreate your body into a beautiful idol,"
"...Why do I feel that was an attack on me." Romani growled, "Also why the hell are you out of your workshop, woman! You're supposed to be working on-"
"The hell is this?" Jack asked, looking at the sputtering hologram that flickered and died, "Magic?!"
"Fou?" came a small chirrup as Cira was made aware of four tiny paws that dug into her shoulder.
"Oh, so you did follow us," she smiled, reaching up and scratching Fou under the chin.
"What's that!?" Jack demanded, looking at the small critter, "Looks like a squirrel…hm…squirrel's good eatin', wonder if…"
"You eat him and I'll beat you," Cira threatened.
Jack laughed, raising his hands in a placating sense.
"Easy there, Missy Cira," he soothed, "I know girlies and their pets are touchy subjects. From experience. Anyways, we're almost there, let's go,"
"Master, if we're in the Age of Exploration like Doctor Roman said," Mash murmured as they continued to walk, "If he's the real Drake then he's probably a living being. The first voyager in history to sail around the globe and live to tell the tale. England received great fortune from his actions and they beat Spain, who had been dominating the world seas."
"El Draque," Cira nodded, "The Hero that brought down the sun. I remember that in history class,"
"The British Empire wouldn't be possible without Captain Drake," Mash finished, "Even though Drake was officially sanctioned by the state as a corsair…a pirate is still a pirate…"
"You're worried he'll be like those drunk jerks we met at the beach?" Cira asked.
"I'm afraid he might want a battle first…."
"I'll back you up the best I can," Cira reassured her, "I've been…practicing. I don't overheat as badly anymore. Cu and Artoria have been helping me in actual combat too,"
"If you get into a fight then I'm not doing my job," Mash groused.
"Come on, Mash, it's not like he's gonna be a gluttonous giant who can grab an ale barrel in one hand and chug its contents," Cira rolled her eyes.
"All the same…there's no doubt he's a key person of this era," Mash continued.
"...You think it might be like Nero?" Cira asked.
"It might be a good idea to get his help," Mash nodded.
"Alrighty, let's at least try," Cira sighed.
They stepped out of the woods about ten minutes later. What met their eyes was…an interesting sight. It looked to be a small town made out of flotsam and jetsam. Canvas rigging and ropes hung as if decorations and shade from the tropical sun beating down through the jungle leaves. The bitter smell of ale and grog and unwashed bodies floated in the air as well as that of woodsmoke and gunpowder. It was not a pleasant combination.
Pirates of all shapes, colors and sizes milled about, some drinking around roaring bonfires, others napping in the hazy afternoon. But one stood out.
Leaning in a chair with a golden goblet in hand and black boots on a broken barrel was a woman. Her long pink hair cascaded down her shoulders, her face was shadowed by the wide tri cornered hat pulled low over her eyes. She seemed at ease…but the pistol dangling loosely in her right hand seemed to already have the hammer pulled back.
"Boss," Jack called out, giving a wave as he started forwards.
The woman tilted her head up slightly, and her startlingly cobalt eyes narrowed slightly. A scar tore down the side of her face as she groaned and tilted her head back.
"Ugh, Jackie boy, you really know how to ruin a good mood," she snapped, "I was enjoying this rum and now you're showin' your sorry mug here. Seriously!?"
"They wanted to talk to ya," Jack shrugged, "'Sides, I know you're bored as hell."
"Who're they," the woman's eyes flicked to Cira and Mash, "They pirates?"
"Nope," Jack said, "Bit more classy than us…and a lot more violent,"
"...Is that so?" the woman gave an almost vulpine grin as she took her feet off the barrel and got to them, downing what was left in the goblet before slamming it down on the barrel, "Damn that gets better every time!"
She cleared her throat and swaggered towards the group, her pistol resting easily against her shoulder while her other hand lay on her hip on top of a gleaming gold cutlass.
"So, ya gonna tell me who you're with? Government? Army?" she asked, Cira could smell the rum on her breath.
"Don't think so," Jack admitted.
"So ya don't know and ya brought them to me anyways," she growled, casting an electric blue glare at Jack, "Heh…weird lookin' ones aren't ya."
"They've got their good points," Jack grinned, "They're tough as nails…not to mention they're excited to meet their idol captain."
The woman threw back her head and laughed, a loud, belly-shaking laugh that rang throughout the hideout.
"Me?" she howled, "I'm their idol?! You're kidding!"
"I mean with the way they've been talkin' about ya, I'd say so," he chuckled, "How the 'great captain Drake' can blast away the Spanish Armada in an instant! That Drake's a giant over 3 meters tall who downs rum by the barrel. They seemed excited to me,"
It took a second for Cira to get what he was saying.
"Oh come on not again!" she groaned.
The woman gave an amused smile.
"Oh you didn't know huh?" she smirked, "Nice t' meet ya. Name's Francis Drake,"
