Going home was the best part of the day for Billy.

It wasn't because he hated his job, not at all. He was a car mechanic and he loved it; he was so good at repairing and restoring vehicles that whenever someone had a problem, they instantly looked up his name. That ended up getting a lot of popularity for the garage he worked at.

To be honest, if he didn't have such a beautiful and amazing wife waiting for him at home, he probably would spend hours into the night just tinkering on his work projects. But he did, in fact, have such a beautiful and amazing wife that whenever clock out time came, Billy would instantly punch out his card and leave to be with Sidney.

That was exactly what he was doing now. As he walked across the parking lot after locking up to get to his car, he heard a soft sound. Slowing his steps but not stopping, he listened when he heard it again, just a bit louder this time.

It was a tiny whine, and not just any whine. An animal whine.

Furrowing his eyebrows, Billy began walking towards the sound when he saw it. It was a puppy. A cute little brown lab puppy who looked to be about a month old. It was staring at him warily but with interest, as if it wanted to come to him but was too timid. Clearly, it already had bad experiences with humans.

Billy smiled and knelt to one knee, extending one of his hands while the other stayed by his side within the puppy's sight. He didn't want to startle the poor thing more than it already was, so he made sure that both of his hands could be seen by the small animal.

"Hi," he whispered.

The puppy cocked its head upon hearing Billy's voice. Its curiosity was piqued.

"It's okay, I won't hurt you," Billy continued to placate the animal in the same soft and gentle tone he used in his greeting. He knew how skittish animals could be, especially baby animals who appeared to have been abandoned, like this puppy did.

Ever so slowly, the puppy inched forward. It stared at Billy with caution, but eventually, the small dog got close enough that it nudged its head against his fingertips.

"Good puppy," Billy praised softly, gently caressing the puppy's head.

As he petted it, the puppy began to calm down and warm up to him. Its tail wagged slightly and it moved so close to him Billy could just snatch it up into his hands without any problems, which was exactly what he did.

Rising from his kneeling position, Billy cradled the puppy like it was a human baby, smiling down at it as it panted happily and stared up at him with its big, sweet, brown eyes.

Looking at the puppy, Billy was suddenly reminded of Sidney.

Despite being a stray, its fur was brown and glossy like her hair, its matching eyes wide and trusting as it was held by someone who didn't want to hurt or abandon it. It was such a beautiful dog and he knew that Sidney would love it. After all, they had both been wanting a pet for a very long time now but had yet been able to get one.

"Sidney would love you," he told the puppy. It did a little head tilt at the new name.

Billy laughed, already in love with the puppy. "Are you a boy?"

The puppy was silent, staring at him.

"Are you a girl?"

A little yip and a smile.

"Okay, you're a girl, then. I guess now I'm going to be outnumbered in my house," he joked as he turned around and walked over to his car. He opened the passenger door and carefully set the girl puppy onto the seat. When she was comfortable, he shut the door and went over to the driver's side, opening and then shutting it behind him.

"Let's go home, little girl," Billy told the puppy as he stuck his key into the ignition and began the short drive home.

"I want to surprise Sidney, so you're going into my jacket," Billy said as he pulled the puppy from the seat and into his arms. "Do you think you can stay quiet until I can tell Mommy about you?"

The puppy licked his face.

Billy laughed. "Okay, then," he hid the puppy into his jacket, covering her well while ensuring that she could breathe easily. When she was secure, he walked towards the door and opened it.

"Sid!" He called out as he closed the door behind him.

"Billy!" Sidney appeared from the kitchen and rushed over to him, the beautiful smile that he loved so much lighting up her face and making her eyes sparkle.

When she reached him, she pulled him into a kiss, one he eagerly and lovingly returned.

"How was work?" She asked once she pulled away.

"It was great like always. I have something for you."

"Oh?"

"Yeah. Close your eyes."

Sidney gave him a bemused look but she listened to him anyway, her eyes fluttering shut as she patiently waited for whatever it was he had for her.

Billy opened his jacket and carefully held the puppy. He noticed that the puppy stayed silent and just watched Sidney, knowing that her presence was a surprise.

'What a smart little girl,' he thought fondly.

"Sid…this made me think of you. Open your eyes."

Sidney opened her eyes and when she realized what he was holding, she let out a happy squeal. "Oh my God, Billy!" She lurched forward and took the puppy from his arms and brought her into hers.

"Is it a boy or a girl? Where did you get it? Did you give it a name yet?" She fired off question after question in rapid succession as she cradled the puppy close to her chest. Now that the surprise was over, the puppy was yapping and licking Sidney's face, who giggled happily, completely enraptured by the small animal.

"It's a girl. I found her near the garage after my shift. No, I haven't given her a name yet. I was waiting to bring her home so we could name her together," he answered her questions, smiling at her joy.

Sidney was so happy as she gazed at the puppy she felt like crying. She wanted a pet, a dog being her preference, for so long. Now that she had one…it felt like something that had been missing was just filled.

"Lucy," she finally decided as she met her husband's gaze. "She's going to be the new light in our lives."

Billy smiled. "Lucy it is," he agreed. "Our little light."
