JADE
Two weeks after Jame's allergy attack, I'm sitting in my bedroom reading a new book Mom had given me for Christmas. My phone chimes next to me. I sigh and set down the book, reaching for my phone to check who had texted. Normally I would have ignored the notification, but my parents always say that when they are out I have to keep my phone on me in case there is an emergency. The number is unidentified.
hey
I put my phone down, ignoring the random text. I never respond to junk mail. A few moments later it chimes again.
this is Ava btw
My heart jumps to my throat, and I immediately set down my book, forgetting how suspenseful and interesting it is. No, this is way better than some silly old book. I stand up out of my bed and start to pace the room. For some reason I feel like I have to pee. My fingers start to type, and after a few tries, I send a reasonable message.
Hi Ava, it's Jade.
kaylee gave me your number, im not a stalker
I smile to myself.
I know :)
So whats up?
After a few seconds she responds.
nothing really, kaylee has a soccer game this wednesday tho, and im gonna be rlly bored
Oh :(
hey, maybe you and ur family could come and keep me and my dad company.
I feel myself go numb. Ava is asking me to hang out with her. There is no way I could go. Number one, I barely know her. She could be a killer. Number two, how could I explain it to my moms? They would never let me go hang out with some girl I just met. Slowly, I smile. I would tell my parents that Kaylee invited me to go to her game, and my parents would be so excited that I was seeing a friend, they wouldn't even ask questions. They might not even notice that I was spending more time with Ava then watching the game. I look down at my phone. Maybe Ava and I could be good friends. We do seem to click pretty well.
I can check with my parents, I would love to go!
I bite my lip.
ok:)
The minute I hear the front door opening, I bolt out of my bed and slide out of the door.
"Mami!" I exclaim, "Mom!"
My parents are setting down bags of groceries on the counter and laughing about something. Tyler and James sit on the floor underneath them and slobber all over their toys.
"Yes JJ?" Mami asks, turning towards me. Mom makes her way to Mami and wraps her arms around her waist. Mami leans into her, and I make a face at them. They are my OTP, but honestly sometimes their PDA is a bit much. Especially around my old friends. It sort of freaked them out, not because it was two ladies, but because it was constant.
"Can I go to Kaylee's soccer game next Wednesday?" I ask innocently.
They look at each other, communicating with their eyes. "Of course Jade," Mom says, "Maybe Mami and I could come too, get to know your friends' parents a bit."
I swallow. "Yeah, sure. It'll be fun."
"Hell yeah! I'll bring the booze!" Mami says, holding up her hands and twirling out of Mom's grasp. She pulls two sweating bottles of vodka out of the grocery bags and waltzes away, moving to put them away. Mom giggles, "It's a ninth grade soccer game, Sanny," she says, following her.
I roll my eyes and climb back up the stairs to my room. Flopping back down on my bed, I text Ava to let her know that we can come. She responds with a GIF of a dancing cat. It makes me giggle.
For the next half hour, Ava and I talk about everything and nothing. I learn about her school, their annoying uniforms, Ava's best friend Max, the kids at Ava's dance studio. Ava likes the kids at her studio way better than the kids at her school. She says that they are all rich snobs. That makes me a little nervous, because of the amount of money my parents make, but she doesn't mind. I learn about how her mom died when she was younger, and it doesn't feel awkward at all. I tell her about my old friends, and how they dropped me. I tell her about how both my parents are gregarious and talented, so I don't feel like a real Lopez-Peirce since I'm quiet and shy. She says she likes me the way I am.
That makes my stomach feel funny. A few minutes later, my Mami walks into my room. She sees me sitting on my bed, staring at my phone and grinning, hugging a stuffed animal close to my chest.
"Who are you texting?" she asks immediately.
"No one Mami," I say, shutting my phone off.
"Who was it JJ? Was it a boy?" she asks.
"No."
"A girl?"
"Yes, a friend. Relax, is dinner ready?" I ask, trying to change the subject. She narrows her eyes at me. "Yes, come downstairs."
I follow my Mami downstairs, watching her long black hair fall into it's perfect waves. As we get downstairs Mami immediately falls in the chair next to Mom and kisses her on the cheek. She scoops her some chili and plops it on her plate with a smile. Sometimes it's unsettling, seeing Mami so sweet and loving around Mom, since normally she's guarded, tough, sassy, and protective. I like seeing it though.
After dinner Mom tucks the boys into bed, and Mami follows me into my room.
"Goodnight JJ," she says, kissing me on the top of my head.
"Goodnight Mami, give Mom a goodnight kiss for me," I say as I climb into bed. Mami smirks, "Trust me, I will."
"Oh gag me," I giggle, throwing a pillow at Mami. She laughs and turns off my lights. With a last goodnight, she leaves me.
I try to sleep, but my mind keeps drifting back to Ava. What does this mean? I've been excited about meeting a friend before, but this feels different. I remember my old friend telling everyone about a time when she went to go meet a boy that she had met at a football game a few weeks earlier. She said she couldn't stop thinking about him. And every time she did her stomach got these weird butterflies, and it was a little hard to breathe. That's how it feels for me. But what does that mean? Does that mean I like Ava, like my friend liked that boy? But what does that mean? Does that mean I'm a lesbian? No way, lesbian is to big of a word. Maybe I'm Bi, but that wouldn't make sense either, because I've never been attracted to a boy. I groan. At this rate, I'll never be able to sleep.
After a few minutes, I hear one of the boys cry in the room next to me. When it doesn't stop, I tip toe into their room. By now both of them are awake, and when they see me come in they start babbling happily. I reach into Tyler's crib and pull him out, he immediately rests his head against my shoulder. James reaches for me to, so I pull him out and rest him expertly on my hip. I've become kind of a master at holding two babies at once.
They both babble for their Mommies, so I take them into our parents room. No one is there, so I start to turn around. I hear giggling downstairs. I don't want to go get them, they deserve some alone time. I look at James.
"Do you want to lie down?" I whisper, poking him in the belly. He giggles.
"Si!" he says.
"Yuh!" Tyler says.
I put both boys down on the bed, and pull the sheets around them. As I stand above the bed, I feel a sense of longing. It's been so long since I've cuddled in my parents bed with my brothers. Tentatively, I climb under the covers with them, pulling the warm sheets up to my chin. I know it's babyish, but I always feel safer in my Moms' bed. Tyler immediately falls asleep, but James cuddles up next to me, curling into my body. He wraps his tiny hand around my finger and whispers his version of goodnight to me. I kiss his forehead in response. Together, we drift off to sleep.
SANTANA
After I say goodnight to JJ, I peek in on the boys. They are already asleep, so I bound downstairs for some Britt time. She's sitting on the couch scrolling through her phone. When she hears me come in she looks up at me and grins.
"Hey Sanny," she whispers. I kiss her nose and climb into her lap. She wraps her arms around me and nuzzles her head into my neck.
"Hey Britt," I say softly, running my fingers through her hair. "I feel like I barely saw you today."
She giggles, "I know. Sometimes, even though we're living together, it's like we're not really alone. Like, the kids are always there. And that's ok because I love them and I wouldn't want anything to change, but sometimes I'm just like, Give me my Santana and a large espresso, and let me rest. You know?"
I nod, "I know. I know exactly what you mean."
Brittany kisses my neck softly, in between thoughts.
"Babe?" she says.
"Mhm?"
"Do you remember, before we had Jade, we used to have Friday night game night?" Brittany asks me. I smile.
"Of course I remember."
Brittany pulls away from me slightly and looks into my eyes. "Do you wanna…?"
I grin, "Hell yes. I'll go get Uno."
A few minutes later, Brittany and I are deeply immersed in the intense game of Uno. We sit across from each other, on separate sides of the coffee table. Her legs stretch under the table, her feet resting in my lap.
"Your turn," I mutter, studying my cards. As of right now, I'm doing pretty well. The card played is a blue seven, and I had three blue cards in my hand, and a yellow six. She better keep it in blue.
"Red seven," she says, placing the card on top of the blue.
"Nooo babe!" I exclaim, groaning with frustration. She giggles, stretching her toes out to tickle my tummy.
"Sorry," she says sweetly, but I see the smirk behind it. I scowl, crossing my arms. I draw a card. It's another blue. After drawing three more useless cards, I draw a wild card. I cackle and play it, changing the color to blue.
Brittany laughs, and plays a blue three. We go back and forth on the blues for a while, until she skips me three times and plays a wild.
"I'm changing the color to….." Brittany taps her chin. I rub her feet in anticipation. "Green."
I groan and slam my pile down on the table. There is no way I can win now.
"I quit." I pout, pushing Brittany's feet off my lap. She throws her head back and laughs. I almost crack a smile at the sight of her beautiful grin, but I'm way too petty to let that happen. Instead, I stand up and wrap myself in a blanket. I turn away from my wife, and wait for her to come console me. I hear her standing up, still giggling, and a few moments later I feel her wrap her arms around me.
"Santaana," she says, dragging my name out and swaying me softly. "Don't be mad that you never win Uno."
My jaw drops open, "Babe!" I say, "That's not true!"
"Yes it is. And I still love you more than you could even fathom," Brittany whispers in my ear. I shiver.
"I love you too," I say, dropping the act. I turn around to face her blue eyes, and give her a kiss right above her lips. She pouts and squeezes my waist, I give her a kiss on the lips, and I can feel her smiling.
"Do you wanna watch a movie, Santana?"
I smirk and pull Brittany closer to me, "Not really… I kinda want to… go to bed."
Brittany shrugs, "Ok, if you're tired."
I sigh, "No, I want to go to bed, but I don't want to do any sleeping."
"Wait what? Why would you want to… ohhhhh," Brittany realizes what I'm getting at. She kisses me again. "Why can't we just do it down here?" she asks.
I smirk at her impatientness. "Babe," I say, "We don't want a repeat of before."
When Jade was four, we did it on the couches when she was sleeping, and we fell asleep before we could get our clothes back on and untangle ourselves. It was terrible for both of us when she walked in the next morning and asked why we were sleeping like that.
Brittany laughs, "You're right, let's go upstairs."
She spins away from me and slips out of the living room. I follow her quickly. As I turn the corner she jumps out at me, causing me to scream and giggle. Brittany laces her fingers in mine and tugs me up the stairs. I keep my eyes glued to her ass as we hurry up the stairs. I lick my lips in anticipation. Finally, we collapse through the doorway of our room, already tugging on each other's shirts. I grab Brittany's neck and pull her into a heated kiss, but she pulls away.
I groan, "Now's not the time for teasing me babe. I needs you, and I needs you now."
"No," she says, "Look." She gestures to the bed, and I look at it. As my eyes adjust to the dark, I see three sleeping figures. Jade, Tyler, and James cuddle together on our bed, smack in the middle.
Brittany rubs her forehead and leans against me. "Sorry," she says, "We're gonna have to skip tonight."
I nod, "It's ok, honestly looking at these three all I want to do is cuddle this bundle of cuteness."
Brittany giggles, "I was hoping you'd say that."
Brittany climbs into bed on one side of the kids, and I climb in on the other. Our hands find each other above the kids' heads.
"Goodnight Britt," I say.
"Night Santana," she says, drifting asleep.
The morning of the soccer game, Jade is already downstairs eating when Brittany and I roll out of bed.
"Good morning," I say to her, as Brittany and I collapse on the couch. I curl up and rest my head on her lap.
"Are you guys tired or something?" Jade says, scarfing down the last bit of her egg sandwich. Brittany rubs her head in response.
"The boys would not go to sleep last night," I say, rubbing Brittany's neck. "Thankfully they seem to be sleeping well this morning. Maybe they'll sleep all day."
Brittany laughs wishfully.
"Wait! We're going to the soccer game, remember!" Jade says, standing up from her chair. "We can't miss it! Kaylee really wants me to see her and I really don't want to miss it we have-"
"Don't worry Jade," Brittany says, glancing at me with a confused expression on her face. "We can still go, you don't have to freak out."
Jade relaxes and Brittany shrugs at me. "Do you want eggs Santana? I can put some in the toaster for you?"
"Yeah sure-" I say, sitting up, "Wait what?"
Brittany grabs her head, blushing, "Sorry, I mean I can put some on the grill. I mean, ah! Breakfast confuses me."
I smile softly at her, "It's ok, I'll do it."
I make Brittany and I eggs, and the boys smoothies. When we hear the boys cry upstairs, Brittany goes to get them. I turn to Jade, and try to make conversation with her, but she seems occupied. Soon, Brittany brings the boys downstairs, we get everyone fed and get into the car. James and Tyler fall into their own conversations, and Jade immediately buries herself in her cell phone as she buckles in the back seat. Brittany laces her fingers through mine and I drive away from our big house.
The game is at Jade's school, behind the building at the soccer field. The minute we arrive Jade says a quick word to us and rushes away. Brittany shrugs and we follow her hastily.
With a boy in each hand, I follow Brittany through the crowd of high school parents. Brittany finds an empty spot of grass next to a man who looks about our age and a girl who looks about Jade's age. My wife spreads out a blanket on the grass and we sit down, pulling out books and toys for the boys. Brittany smirks at me.
"We're such moms," she says, peering into the soccer field, looking for Jade.
"Eh, we're still the hottest ones here."
"Baby, we're the hottest ones wherever we go," Brittany says, smirking.
"True dat," I hold my hand out for a high five and she takes it, kissing it softly.
"Santana Lopez?"
I turned my head, it had been so long since I had heard my name without Pierce attached to the end. The man sitting next to us looks at me, and then Brittany.
"Brittany Pierce?"
"Hi!" Brittany says to the man, who we've never seen before. The man continues looking at us.
"It's me, Frederick."
We stare at him blankly. He continues.
"McKinley High, Cheerios Squad? Remember me?"
Suddenly a much smaller, skinnier, shorter version of this black haired man flashes through my mind. He was a flyer with me and Quinn. I see the recognition flash through Brittany's eyes too.
"Ohh, Frederick! We were the flyers." I say. The man nods.
"With Quinn Fabray," he says.
Frederick and I smile at each other, and then Brittany gasps.
"Wait," she says, "You were the first person that I ever told…" Brittany trails off. I take her hand and caress her soft skin with my thumb.
"Told what?" I ask.
Frederick grins at her, "I was the first person you told that you were-"
"Bi-sexual," Brittany finishes, squeezing my hand. I look at her in surprise. I didn't know that. Brittany nods, not taking her eyes off the man. "We had just finished… you know," Brittany says. The teenager sitting behind Fredrick lets out a loud laugh, nudging her dad with her foot. My mouth turns sour, knowing that this man has seen my wife in a state that is now reserved only for me. But then I shake the thought out of my head. We both slept around. We slept with every boy and girl we crossed paths with. I know not to take it personally.
Brittany continues, "You asked me if I was in love with Santana Lopez, and I said yes. Then you asked me if I was a lesbian."
Fredrick nods, looking proud, "You said you didn't know because you had loved some boys too, and I told you about being Bi-sexual."
Brittany nods, and the two share a smile.
"Well," I say, breaking the silence, "That's… a coincidence." I turn to Brittany. "Do you know where Jade went?"
Brittany pulls a whining James onto her lap and kisses his soft blond hair, looking around. "I have no idea, maybe she went to find her friend?"
I peer at the field. The game should be starting in a few minutes, the crowd has thinned out, and many people have taken seats. The air smells like hotdogs and sweaty children. My stomach churns.
"Wait? Are you Jade's moms?" the teenage girl asks. We look at her. She is a beautiful young woman, with dark wavy hair and piercing blue eyes.
"Yeah," I say cautiously. "You know her?"
"Yeah!" the girl sits up, "I'm texting her right now! She's trying to find us too!"
I nod slowly, "And… who are you exactly?"
"Oh," the girl says, laughing, "I'm Ava. Kaylee's sister. Jade's friend."
Frederick palms his face, cracking the same grin as his daughter. "I can't believe I forgot to mention it. We drove your daughter home when your son was in the hospital," Fredrick looks at Tyler, then at James, then at Tyler. "He's doing better?"
Brittany takes Jame's little hand and waves it around a little. "I'm okay!" she says, in a tiny voice. Frederick smiles. This man smiles a lot.
"Mom! Mami! Ava!"
Ava grins as she sees my daughter approaching. Something passes between them, something that makes me very, very, uncomfortable.
"Hey Jade," Ava says, smiling.
"Hi," Jade responds.
We all sit in silence for a quick moment, and then Jade clears her throat. "Well, Mami, Mom, this is my friend Ava, Kaylee's sister, and Kaylee's dad. Kaylee's dad, Ava, these are my moms and my little brothers Tyler and James."
Ava stands up slowly and walks towards Jade. Jade clears her throat and blushes. "Do you want to go get some snacks before the game starts?" Ava asks.
Jade looks at me. "Yeah, is that ok mom?"
I open my mouth, but Brittany rests her soft hand on top of mine. "Yeah sure JJ, just be back soon."
Ava slips her hand inside of Jades, and Jade's eyes widen. As do mine. This girl pulls our daughter away from us, and together they run to the opposite end of the field to the snack shed.
I practically fume at the ears. I'm mad at so many people. I'm mad at Jade for telling us we were coming to the soccer game to watch her friend, while instead she wanted to fool around with her friend's sister. I'm mad at this kid Ava for… many things that I can't think of right now. I'm mad at Fredrick for having sex with my wife in high school. I'm mad at Brittany for not being mad. I glance at my wife. She doesn't look mad at all, in fact, her eyes are brimming with tears.
I scoot closer to her and put an arm around her hips. "What's the matter?" I ask.
Brittany looks at me and smiles through our tears. "Our baby is all grown up," she says, "and she's gay af! I'm so proud of her!"
I laugh out loud in spite of myself. Brittany wipes her eyes.
"You're adorable," I say.
"I can't wait to talk about girls with her," Brittany dreams, staring into the distance. I pull myself together and look Brittany in the eyes.
"Britt-Britt, slow down. We don't know what this means, we don't even know if she is interested in Ava that way. We can't push her, let her come to us. Think back to when we were that age," I say. Brittany widens her eyes at me and smirks. "Ok maybe we should have a talk with her," I say, "But don't rush things."
Brittany nods and pecks me on the lips. I settle into her and turn to watch the soccer game.
Next chapter will have Jade's side of the soccer game... stay tuned 3
