So we are now getting into the Hogwarts side of things properly with all the classes and everything. Disclaimer: I don't own the characters but I wish I did.
Chapter 4 – When the going gets tough.
I barely slept that night, listening to the rain hit the window. I wish I could be like Snowy and just stick my head under my wing and sleep like that, but unfortunately it wasn't that easy. I rolled over and saw that the time was 5:30, classes didn't start till 8 and breakfast was at half past 6. Sighing I opened the bottom draw of drawers where I had stashed some parchment and a pen that Fred had managed to sneak to me during the night.
Dear Uncle Lupin,
I was sorted into Hufflepuff, it's not Gryffindor, but Fred assures me that mum and dad would be proud of me. He stole a Gryffindor pen for me, to make me feel better, what would I do without him? I miss you and Uncle Sirius, he doesn't deserve to be in Azkaban, it wasn't his fault and I hope he doesn't think I blame him.
Dumbledore thought it would be safer to just have Evans as my last name, he said it would keep Harry safe as well. I agree with him, I would do anything to keep my family safe and don't worry I will keep my eye on Fred and George, I did promise Mrs Weasley after all.
I'm worried about the full moon, but I know that the potion you sent me will help and I'm also glad to know that both you and Fred will be there each month. I made a new friend; his name is Cedric, and it seems like he genuinely wants to be my friend.
I'll see you soon
Love From
Your Little Wolf.
Remus started calling me his little wolf after my third full moon, his way of dealing with the loss of my parents, that and calling me Evans or Potter was too much. I never really explained why I'm Evans Potter and not just Potter. You see mum was pregnant with me the last year of school, a complete accident really but Remus assures me that Mum and Dad wouldn't have given me up no matter what. They used a disillusionment charm to hide mum's bump so that she could sit her end of year exams with no trouble, except I was born a month early. I should've been born a week after they finished school but ended up being born on the 24th April 1978, exactly 23 days after Fred and George. They rushed Mum to St Mungo's so that nobody would ask questions and Dumbledore allowed her to sit her exams just a week later, while Dad's parents looked after me. I don't know much about my Grandparents, Euphemia and Fleamont Potter but I do know they were kind and caring.
Mum and Dad were married in the summer of 1979 and on the 31st July 1980 Harry was born. Now as you all know Sirius Black was made Harry's godfather, so you're probably wondering who my godparents are and it's not who you think. My godparents are none other than Frank and Alice Longbottom, mum and dad's friends from school. They were cursed into madness by a witch called Bellatrix Lestrange, leaving behind their only son Neville who was sent to live with his aunt. Unfortunately, my brother's, Neville's and my lives are all surrounded by tragedy. However I once again digress. I gently woke Snowy from her slumber offering a treat as a sign of peace. She groggily accepted it and allowed me to move her from the cage so I could send her on her way with the letter. Packing away my parchment and pen I quickly glanced at the time once more, it was now 6 o'clock. None of the other girls had stirred yet and I was kind of grateful, it meant I didn't have to hold any awkward conversations with them.
I began to dress pulling on my shirt and buttoning it before tying my tie. Thankfully, Remus had taught me how to tie one, he did after all own quite a few. Tie on, I pulled my jumper over my head, smoothing out any creases. In a few minutes I was dressed and ready to go, grabbing my headband I placed it in my hair before grabbing my small rucksack and heading out into the common room. with what time it was I was surprised to see Cedric and another Hufflepuff sat at one of the tables. Her hair was varying shades of purple and pink, lace fingerless gloves covered her hands and her tie hung loose around her neck.
"Good Morning Michelle" Cedric smiled; his grin almost dazzling "I don't believe you've met…"
"Tonks?" I asked unsure as to whether this was the person Charlie had told me about.
"I see dear Charlie Weasley has mentioned me" She laughed and patted the bench next to her "Nice to finally meet you Michelle" I smiled a small smile and sat next to her.
"He might have mentioned you a few times" I said timidly. I wasn't sure how she was going to react to me, what with having scars and everything.
"Only a few? I'll be having words with him" she laughed once again, and I felt myself begin to relax a little. Tonks was exactly as Charlie had described, bright, bubbly and an infectious personality. I could see why they were best friends.
"We were just discussing the Quidditch team, being first years we can't try out, but Tonks here says we haven't won a game in years" Cedric huffed, sounding slightly disappointed. I could understand why they we're disappointed, but I could also understand why Hufflepuff hadn't won a game. From what Charlie had told me Gryffindor and Slytherin were the two best teams and in some respects unbeatable. Gryffindor had a pretty decent keeper in the form of third year Oliver Wood and Charlie claimed he had never missed a save, I found that to be unbelievable until I saw it for myself.
"Michelle?" Tonks waved a hand in front of my face.
"Sorry just thinking" I bit my lip and played with the end of my robes.
"Come on let's head to the great hall, we can sit with the Gryffindor's if you like" Tonks giggled as my face lit up at the mention of being able to sit with the Gryffindor's at breakfast. Cedric, Tonks and I made our way to the great, Tonks chuckling as Cedric and I marvelled at the brilliance of the castle.
"Mickey!" I shrieked in surprise as I was suddenly picked up upon entering the great hall. Fred spun me around a couple of times before placing me back on my feet.
"I feel like I'm going to throw up" I mumbled as I clung to his robes keeping my eyes closed so I didn't fall over.
"Sorry" Fred said sincerely pulling me into a hug.
"I missed you too Fred" I smiled hugging him back properly as I got my bearings. In truth I had missed him even though it had only been a night. Pulling back I looked up at him watching as his smile broke into a grin.
"So how's Hufflepuff treating you?" He kept his arm around my shoulder as he led us to where Tonks and Cedric had joined Charlie and George. I noticed Cedric frown at the gesture then turn away to talk to the others.
"Okay" I muttered solemnly taking a seat next to George, Fred took the seat next to me making it a Michelle sandwich.
"Don't listen to them Shell, they don't understand anyone who's different to them" Tonks said around a mouthful of toast. I raised an eyebrow at her slightly confused "Charlie told me" she winked at me.
"That would explain things" I chuckled quietly. As breakfast went on, I noticed Cedric keeping an eye on the interaction between Fred and myself. It was weird to say the least, but I brushed it off, Fred had been my best friend for years and I had really only just met Ced, so I couldn't understand what his problem was.
"Yellow looks good on you Mickey" Fred tucked a stray strand of hair behind my ear.
"Thanks and red suits you too" I grinned as he pretended to straighten his tie. We began comparing schedules and I was delighted to find out that we had potions, defence against the dark arts and flying together. Cedric tried to keep up a conversation with Tonks and Charlie but couldn't help but keep looking back at the twins and me. I would have to confront him about that later as it was starting to freak me out a little bit.
As the time began creeping towards 8 o'clock we decided to head to our first classes, Charlie and Tonks made their way to the Herbology greenhouses, while Fred and George wandered off to charms, leaving me with Cedric.
"So Transfiguration?" I asked waving my hand in front of his face pulling him out of his head.
"Sorry, yes Transfiguration" He smiled crookedly, and we began walking towards the class.
"Something wrong Cedric?" I asked a little scared as to what the answer might be.
"Nope, nothing at all…. it's just…." He stuttered taking a moment to pull his bag further onto his shoulder and compose himself "It's nothing I'm just being silly". I frowned but dropped the subject as we carried on walking. We reached the classroom door, pushing it open slightly we found only two other students waiting. Silently we made our way to one of the desks, taking our seats and pulling out the books that we needed for the class. I started a conversation about the class with Cedric trying to make things a little less awkward between us. We must have been speaking for a good five minutes before other students began piling into the classes and filling up the desks. I had noticed when we walked in but upon Professor McGonagall's Desk perched a small grey tabby cat its tail flicking as it watched us.
"I wonder where McGonagall is" Cedric whispered in my ear. I shrugged and quickly glanced around the room expecting her to jump out at any moment. Minutes passed by before the cat stood up, stretching its back and almost preparing itself to jump. We all watched in awe as the cat suddenly jumped of the desk and turned into McGonagall mid jump.
"Good morning class and welcome to your first Transfiguration lesson, you will not be needing your wands today so please keep them in your pockets" She spoke as if she was reciting from a textbook. For the next hour we learnt about the study of Transfiguration and what it meant to be able to cast these spells and all through that hour I could feel Cedric watching me to a point it was starting to make me feel uncomfortable.
Hmm so what do we think is going on with Cedric? As usual leave me a little review to let me know what you think :)
