Kate's POV
I looked into Rick's eyes as he sat in the back of the police car, he looked so sad and worried. I wanted to hug him, I wanted to just run over there and hug him and promise him that everything was going to be okay, never letting him go. That wasn't an option though obviously. I felt a tear run down my cheek as the car pulled off and took him away, leaving me alone at his house. What should I do? I guess as he said, call Angel. I took a deep breath and then stepped inside his house. By now it was dark outside so the house was as well, the only light being on was the one in the living room which I could just barely see around the corner. Apart from that the house was just as dark as the outside, silent as well, alone, off putting. I shut the door and locked it and then turned to face the empty house again, it was so weird being in here without anyone else, without Angel, without my Rick. I walked back to the living room as I pulled my phone out of my pocket. I then sat on the ottoman as I put the phone to my ear after dialing Angel's number. I also leaned over, resting my head on my hand as my elbow sat on my leg, I was trying my best not to burst into tears.
"Hey Kate what's up?" Angel said as she picked up the phone.
"Hey Angel, I need you to get in contact with your parents" I told her as I held the same position on the ottoman, I then sniffed as I felt my nose start to run, the tears still trying to escape my eyes.
"Huh? Are you okay Kate? What happened?" Angel asked, she seemed to be worried now.
"Rick he… he got arrested" I told her as I shut my eyes and felt another tear fall down my soft cheek. I sniffed again as I wiped it, still trying to control myself, the way he looked in the car, he was so sweet, he didn't deserve any of this.
"What? What do you mean he got arrested? What did he do?" Angel asked in disbelief.
"It was fucking Lyle, he attacked us at Humphrey's house and Rick fucked him up, the cops just came over to your place to arrest him" I explained.
"Alright, where are you now?" Angel asked. I looked around even though I already knew where I was, this dark house that felt so alone and empty now that everyone was gone.
"I'm still at your place" I said.
"Alright, stay there I'm gonna call my parents, I'm on my way now" Angel said. Which didn't quite make sense to me.
"Where are you?" I asked.
"I went to hang out with some friends, don't worry I'll call an uber" Angel said.
"Angel, wait, I can just pick you up" I said, standing up.
"Are you sure?" Angel asked.
"Of course I'm sure, where are you?" I asked again.
"At the mall, I'll be at the exit by dicks when you get here" Angel told me.
"Alright, be right there" I said, I then hung up the phone and turned off the living room light, walking outside and shutting the door behind me. I realized that I didn't have a key though. Was I really gonna have to leave the door unlocked? I began to worry about that but received a glimmer of hope once I saw the welcome mat. I lifted it up and saw that there was no key, of course it wouldn't be that easy. The door would be fine for a couple of hours, what mattered now was that I picked up Angel and went to the police station to find out the situation. I jogged over to my car and hopped in, turning it on and backing out of the driveway as fast as I could. Once on the main road I took off for the highway which would take me right to the mall. As I drove I dialed Lilly. I heard the phone ring as it came through the speakers. She picked up after the second ring.
"Kate, I've been texting you, what happened?" Lilly asked. I hadn't even realized that she texted me, if I hadn't been so busy fucking then maybe I could have saw this coming, but then what would I have done?
"They arrested Rick," I told her. My voice cracking as I tried not to tear up. Driving was gonna be a whole lot harder if I was balling my eyes out like I wanted to.
"What?" Lilly asked in disbelief, she must have put me on speaker because I heard Humphrey next.
"Kate, the police here told me that they were going to pick him up for questioning, they didn't say anything about an arrest" Humphrey said, he sounded sure of himself.
"They put him in fucking handcuffs Humphrey" I told him.
"Where are you now?" Lilly asked me, I guess she wanted me to come over there to figure out what to do.
"I'm driving to the mall to pick up Angel, she's already telling her parents about what happened. What happened after I left though?" I asked, I wanted to know how they instantly knew where to go.
"An ambulance came to pick up Lyle and they took him to the hospital. The cops came with them, I guess they took our description as an assault. They questioned us and asked us where Rick was" Humphrey explained. I felt a small surge of anger after he told me that they asked him where Rick was, how else would they have known?
"You told them where he was?" I asked angrily. I knew that they couldn't lie to the police, but a part of me was still mad at them, whichever one said so.
"Yeah," Humphrey said after a small moment of silence. Even more silence followed as the anger set in. I wanted to punch him but I was definitely in the wrong.
"Kate?" Lilly called gently into the phone after my lack of response.
"I'm picking up Angel and then we're heading to the police station, whether or not you meet us there is up to you, but you should" I told them before hanging up. I took a deep breath to calm down afterwards. There was nothing they could do. There was nothing they could do. I just had to keep telling myself that until the anger passed. I was just in the heat of the moment right now. I turned off the highway and into the street which led to the mall and shopping centers. Pulling into the large parking lot I saw Dicks sporting goods from across the lot. As I pulled up I saw Angel standing by the entrance with a group of her other friends. It had only just now occurred to me that I had never seen them before, she certainly didn't talk about them a lot. I pulled up and I saw Angel wave goodbye to them and then she hopped in the passenger side. She shut the door and buckled in.
"Hey" she said as she buckled her seatbelt. I turned back to the windshield and began driving again, this time to the police station which was just down the road, passing all the stores and such.
"Hey" I greeted, sadness in my voice. I felt that my ears were lowered as the anger had subsided a bit and was now replaced with sadness and worry.
"I Called my parents, they had to leave work early," Angel explained.
"Were they mad?" I asked. I really didn't want them to be, if they knew the situation then I'm sure everything would be fine.
"More worried than anything, what the fuck happened?" Angel asked, I guess I owed her an explanation. A more detailed one anyway.
"Lyle he… he punched Humphrey because he finally spoke back to him and then he hit Rick. I went to aid him but I got pushed away and well… Rick got up and started hitting him, he would have killed him if I didn't stop him" I Explained as well as I could, there wasn't really that much to tell.
"Like with Garth…" Angel said in a low voice.
"Yeah… like with Garth" I repeated.
"So Humphrey… is he okay?" Angel asked. I nodded before actually giving an answer.
"Yeah, him and Lilly should be going to the police station now, at least I think they are, they should be" I said. Angel dug in her pocket and began swiping the screen on her phone.
"I'll text them," she said. I shot her a glance and then turned back to the road, it wasn't much longer now. As I pulled into the driveway Angel closed her phone and put it back in her pocket. "Yeah, they're coming," she assured.
"Okay… are you ready to go?" I asked as I put the car in park and turned it off. Angel nodded.
"Yeah… let's go," she said. We both opened the door and stepped out, getting hit with the cold outside air. By now it was dark out and the small parking lot was littered with large puddles from the rain that I stepped in, almost soaking my shoe. Once we were across the parking lot Angel was the first one to be at the door. She stepped to the side as she held it for me and I was sure to thank her real quick as I went past her. She followed behind me and then the two of us went up to the front counter where a woman sat typing on a computer. We approached her and she looked up to greet us.
"How can I help you?" she asked. She seemed to be concerned that we were there at this time,
"Yeah my boyfriend he… I needed to see him" I told her with clear desperation in my voice.
"The young man we just brought in? He's your boyfriend?" she asked. I simply nodded. She then looked to my right.
"Sister" Angel Said as she raised her hand slightly. The lady sighed and then wrote something down, it turned out to be the date on two visitor passes that we needed to get in.
"I'll let them know that you're in, just go in and take a seat, an officer will come to assist you, don't go near the cells" she instructed. Me and Angel then went through the door to the right of her desk. Inside was just a hallway with a large window to the offices that made up the wall. In the hallway was a couple of chairs with small tables in between them and what looked like a room with cells at the very end of the hallway. My ear flattened again at the thought of Rick in one of those. I took a seat with Angel sitting next to me.
"We're never gonna get a break are we?" I asked as I felt tears well up again. Angel sighed.
"I don't know Kate, I feel your frustration though… it's just one bullshit thing after the next, I just want to have a normal life with you guys" Angel said as she rested her head against the wall, looking up at the ceiling. I turned to her with a small smile, I just had to think about after, not much else could happen right?
"We'll get there Angel… all of us, our time will come" I assured. Angel looked over to meet my eyes and smile back but our little moment was cut off when I heard a familiar voice.
"Kate?" I heard. My ears perked up and my head spun around to see Rick standing at the edge of his cell as far as he could be, hands on the bars as if he wanted to get to me.
"Rick" I called, standing up and running down the hall, the lady's instruction completely leaving my mind. When I got there I wrapped my hands around his and stared into his eyes, my ears flattening again. "Are you okay?" I asked. Rick smiled.
"Yeah… I am now, '' he said. I couldn't help myself, I stuck my muzzle through the bars as much as I could and met his, pressing my lips into his and kissing him fiercely. At first he seemed surprised, but with my eyes shut tight I couldn't make a final judgment. I only think that because of the second it took him to return it.
"Through the bars Kate really?" Angel asked, making me break the kiss and turn my head to her.
"Angel," Rick said happily. Angel smiled back.
"Hey big bro" she said slickly. She then approached the bars, her smile fading. "What did they do to you?" she asked.
"They just questioned me, they're waiting to get a statement from Humphrey's mom to decide whether or not to let me go" Rick explained.
"Criminal record?" Angel asked. Rick shrugged.
"I don't know yet," he said. Just the door to the offices opened and the female cop from earlier came running out.
"Hey, get away from the cell, '' she yelled, approaching us. Me and Angel took a step back and waited for her to make the next move. She stopped and then looked between us and Rick, finally turning to me again. "You were at the house right?" she asked.
"Yeah" I said after nodding slowly. The cop then turned to Angel.
"You?" she asked.
"No, I wasn't there," Angel said. The cop then turned back to me.
"Alright, I need a statement from you then, follow me. Both of you" she instructed. She then turned and began walking away. I turned to Rick and was met with his gaze again. He simply nodded for me to follow her and so I turned back and did exactly that. It was hard for me to walk away from him but after convincing myself that I had to get this over with I found the urge. We were led through the offices until reaching the cops desk where she sat me and Angel down in the two chairs and placed a sheet of paper in front of me as well as a pen. "Just write down what happened alright?" she said. I nodded again. And watched as she walked away. Angel turned to me once she left.
"What do you think?" she asked. I grabbed the pen and shook my head.
"I think there's four of us and one of him, so our statements are gonna mean a lot. Before I started writing I turned my head one last time to see the cop leaving the office to head outside back towards the cells.
Rick's POV
After I was hauled away the car ride was silent. Just radio chatter every once in a while. Getting questioned by them was mostly just them asking me what happened and then they just dumped me in here. Even so I don't regret what I did, I kept my family safe. I would do it again. That didn't make this cell any less cold and lonely though. I just sat on the slab that they called a bed twiddling my thumbs. Seeing Kate was nice, and kissing her was even nicer. Angel even came, Kate must have picked her up wherever she was. The door from the offices opened and I looked up, hoping to see Kate again but it wasn't her. Roberts, Roberts the cop who arrested me with her partner, came over to the cell. I stood up and walked over to the bars to meet her.
"Listen, I know it doesn't seem like it. But I've been over to the main prison and I've dealt with Lyle before. I never liked him, he always seemed…" She didn't finish her sentence as she avoided eye contact. I cocked my head in confusion as I wasn't expecting this. She then looked over at me again. "Just keep your chin up okay? If it comes down to it I'll make some moves to get you out of here, I believe that what you did was the right thing, even if you went overboard with it" she explained.
"Thanks" I nodded. She nodded back, once again avoiding eye contact.
"Are you hungry?" she asked, meeting my eyes once again.
"Thirsty" I said. She nodded once again and then tapped her hand on the cell.
"Be back," she said. She then turned around and walked away, heading back into the office. I started walking backwards as my eyes continued to follow her through the window. But then I heard the door at the end of the hall open. I peeked as much as I could and recognized the voices to be Humphrey and Lilly. Should I call them over? Kate and Angel already got in trouble over that… I guess I shouldn't. I heard a third voice with them as well, I guess that was Humphrey's mom. Where the fuck was she earlier? I heard the door open again. It was Roberts based off of the voice. She greeted the group and then began walking back over to me, this time with a cup of water in her hand. "Are those you friends?" she asked as she handed me the cup which was just barely small enough to squeeze through the bars. It spilled a little on the floor when she squeezed it but it didn't really matter. I accepted the small plastic cup.
"Yeah, Lyle he… he punched Humphrey, the gray one" I explained before taking a sip. Roberts nodded again.
"I'm gonna get them to fill out their statements alright?" she asked.
"Alright" I replied. Roberts then turned around and went to grab the three. What about my parents? Did they know? I hope they won't be mad at me. After the door shut, the three following Roberts into the offices I turned around and went back to my bed where I laid down, looking at the ceiling. It was nothing but empty silence as I laid there thinking to myself. Thinking about how when one prick finally fucks off, another comes in. When are we gonna be allowed to just… live. When am I gonna be able to just spend time with my family? When will I be able to marry Kate? The future seemed so distant. Maybe even uncertain. I sighed as I got lost in thought and closed my eyes. Maybe I could get some sleep at least.
Kate's POV
I finished writing my statement while Angel played on her phone next to me. Most people would have scolded her for being so okay with what was happening, but I think it was more of her trying to take her mind off things than her being bored. After the whole court case, the law wasn't exactly something we trusted. I heard people approach us as they spoke, the voices sounded very familiar so I turned around to see Humphrey, his mom, and Lilly. Good, they were finally here.
"And you said it's on this?" the cop asked. Humphrey's mom nodded.
"Yeah, we had to download it before we came over," she said. The cop nodded and then signaled to follow her. She and Humphrey did but Lilly came over to us, breaking off from the group. Once she finally made it over to us she eyed both me and Angel with a sad expression.
"You okay guys?" she asked.
"About as much as we can," Angel answered. Lilly then turned to me.
"Kate…" she started but I cut her off.
"Its okay Lills, I'm not mad at Humphrey, there was nothing he could do" I told her.
"It wasn't Humphrey that told them it was me" Lilly said. I stared at her in silence for a moment.
"Lilly… it's okay, there was still nothing you could do" I said. Lilly, who was clearly struggling to make eye contact with me, finally did at a steady level.
"So you're really not mad?" she asked. I shook my head.
"No, I'm not mad," I said. Lilly smiled and then fully walked over to us.
"Here, you can sit in my seat," Angel said, standing up. I looked up at her as she began walking away.
"Where are you going?" I asked. Angel turned to me.
"I'm just getting another chair," she answered. I giggled at that, why was she so dramatic about it? Lilly sat down and looked at the pen in my hand, I followed her eyes and could feel the question coming.
"What ya doin?" she asked, there it was. I glanced at the pen which was still in my hand and then back to her.
"Writing a statement, they didn't exactly get mine at the house" I said. I then leaned back over the paper and continued my writing. "In fact I should be done right… about… now" I said, placing the pen next to the paper. Just as I finished Angel placed a chair in between me and Lilly and took a seat.
"You know, I don't know what's taking my parents so long. You'd think they would be here by now" she said as she took her seat.
"Poor Rick… do you think he'll be in trouble?" Lilly asked. Angel shook her head.
"Nah, once they find out why he did it they won't be. They trust him enough to know that he had a good reason to do it. He doesn't just lash out at people" Angel explained.
"Did you see him while you were out there?" I asked Lilly.
"What do you mean?" she asked back, looking confused.
"Well, he was in the cells back there" I answered. Her face went from confusion to sadness as she looked away from me.
"They put him in a cell?" she asked as her voice cracked a bit. Me and Angel glanced at each other in slight confusion.
"Yeah… are you okay?" I asked. Lilly then wiped a tear from her eye as she started to sniffle a bit.
"He's in here… because of me" she sobbed. Angel put a hand on Lilly's shoulder.
"Oh Lilly, no he's not. They would have come to the house either way" she told her. She simply shook her head in response.
"No, because I could have just said that I didn't know the address," she cried. Angel turned and looked at me again.
"Wanna tap in? I'm not good with this" she said. I chuckled a moment before turning to my sister.
"Lilly, believe me, they would have found him regardless" I told her. Lilly didn't respond, she just kept on crying. Angel sighed as she felt bad for Lilly and pulled her into a hug. Some of the other police officers in the office took notice and exchanged glances, but really it wasn't any of their business. Angel stroked Lilly's hair gently as Lilly cried into her.
"It's alright Lills, it's not your fault. Its that small dick fuck up" Angel said. Lilly only sniffed. Poor Lilly, she always took things to heart when she thought it was her fault, but Angel was right. It was that small dick fuck up that did this, why cant these guys just take a fucking hint?
"Alright guys let's go" we heard someone say, we all looked over to see Humphrey. Once he saw Lilly though he went to her. "Lilly, what's wrong?" he asked. She could only make small cries while her lip quivered.
"She thinks it's her fault that Rick is here," Angel said. Humphrey looked back into Lilly's eyes.
"It's not, they know that now" he cooed. What he said though got me a tad bit excited. They knew?
"Wait, Humphrey… they know?" I asked. Humphrey simply smiled.
Rick's POV
Somehow, even after everything I managed to fall asleep in my cell. But I was awoken when I heard the door open. I sat up to see Roberts and everyone else at my door.
"What's happening?" I asked tiredly. Roberts began to approach me.
"You're free to go," she said after kneeling in front of me. I felt confusion grow as I looked past her and to the group.
"I showed them the doorbell camera footage, it caught everything," Myra said. I then looked back at Roberts.
"I told you that you would get out of here," she said. I smiled and then stood up.
"Thank you," I said.
"Nothing to thank me for, you guys just go home and get some rest" Roberts instructed.
"But wait, what's gonna happen to Lyle?" Angel asked.
"We're taking him to court when he's out of the hospital, hopefully get a restraining order" Myra answered. My smile grew bigger. I then stepped out of the cell and was greeted with a huge hug from Lilly. We both nearly fell over but I regained my balance and hugged her back.
"Woah, miss me?" I joked but I noticed she had tears in her eyes. My smile faded. "Lilly?' I asked.
"I'm so sorry Rick, I told them where you were I…" she sobbed. I sighed and rubbed her ear to calm her which seemed to work a little.
"It wasn't your fault Lilly, besides I'm out now" I said.
"You're not mad?" she asked. I shook my head.
"Told you he wouldn't be, you worry too much Lills" Angel said. Lilly giggled, still recovering from tears and let go of me. I then turned to face Myra and walked over to her. Once I was there I wrapped my arms around her, catching her off guard. My muzzle buried in her shoulder.
"Thank you" I said, muffled by her. She hugged me back.
"No, thank you for doing what you did," she replied.
"Alright then, have a good night guys" Robberts said as she began walking to her office again. I waved slightly, even though she couldn't see it. Thank God, I actually got a good cop. I let go of Myra and turned to be greeted with Kate who grabbed my hand.
"Let's Get the hell out of here" she smiled. I smiled back and together we all left the building, getting greeted with my parents who were just now storming in.
"Sorry. There was an accident because of the rain, we had to take a massive detor" dad explained. But then he saw me in the group. "Shouldn't you be in a cell or something?" he asked. Of course, he even uses his humor now of all times.
"I already was, you guys are late" I explained. Mom wrapped her arms around me.
"Oh sweetie I'm so sorry" she said, showering me with kisses. "I'm sorry we took so long, are you okay?" she asked. I smiled.
"Yeah, but right now I just want to go home," I said. Mom nodded as she held my cheeks with both hands. When she let go me and Kate smiled at each other as we held hands again, and after all of that we left. Thank God this ordeal was over.
Authors note - hello, again I'm writing this earlier than usual but I have some things to say. First of all I want to apologize for taking so long to upload, it's been almost a week and I feel really bad about not doing it. I've just been working really long shifts at multiple jobs so it's extremely hard to find time to write this. I just don't want anyone thinking that I abandoned the story because I haven't, this story means so much to me and I plan to finish it. It just might take awhile because of my jobs so please forgive me if it takes awhile for chapters to come out. Even now I am staying up really later than I should to write this chapter but I needed to get something out, and I really needed to write this to let you guys know that chapter may take awhile. Either way I want to thank everyone for reading, reviewing, and just sticking around. I know it's a long story but with what type this is it should be.
All in all I just want you guys to know that I'm spending every second of free time writing this, and that I'm trying to get these out. Hopefully I can get them out faster soon but until then I'll release them when I can. Until next time…
