I had to go to the laundromat. I was out of clean clothes, well I had been out of clean clothes for several days, if I'm honest. I was waiting on my last load of clothes to dry when I heard her. At first, I thought it was the hum of the dryers, but the harder I listened I realized it was someone singing. Her voice was beautiful. Soft and soulful. I recognized the melody but couldn't make out the words. I had to know who she was.
I didn't want to look like a creep lurking over the wall of washers that separated us. So I dug into my pockets and found enough change to get a soda from the machine. I stood up slowly and stretched casually, and nonchalantly walked to the soda machine. I kept telling myself to be cool. Don't let her catch you staring.
I swear that can hit the bottom of the machine with a clatter that could be heard from a mile away. I winced and looked over in her direction. She didn't seem to notice. She was standing with her back to me. She was folding her laundry. Her long dark hair was pulled back in a ponytail. She was swaying slightly to the music she was listening to.
My heart jumped out of my chest when her phone rang. I ran back to my chair and waited.
"Hello?" I heard her on the phone. I immediately wondered who she was talking to.
"No, I am at the laundromat. I am almost done folding, so I should be home in half an hour." Silence followed. A few uh-huhs, and then she started laughing—a loud cackling kind of laugh. I found myself smiling. I had to meet this girl. I decided when she got off the phone. I would go over and introduce myself.
"I promise I will be at your house on time. Yes. Seven. I will remember to bring it." A little more silence. "Are you serious?" That infectious laugh again. "Fine, alright, I, Bella Swan, swear to you, Alice Cullen, I will be on time tonight, and I will not forget to bring the ice… if you don't let me finish my folding, I will be late… Okay, bye Alice, see you later!
What! This girl knew my sister. They had plans tonight. I immediately pull out my phone and text Alice. Hey! What are you up to tonight? Wanna hang out?
