The house went dark. Bella sat still, waiting for her eyes to adjust. The storm outside was violent. Bella chastised herself for not having candles ready. She stood up from her desk and grabbed her phone. She left her bedroom and walked toward the stairs. It was so dark she took them one at a time and made her way to the kitchen. She dug through the drawers with the light of her phone, but she didn't want to waste the battery. Charlie was working overnight, and she needed her alarm to get up for school in the morning.

After finding everything but candles, she started to get anxious. She didn't like staying by herself at night, even in a town as safe as Forks. Now, with the power out she was a bundle of nerves. Every noise was amplified. Danger seemed to lurk in the shadows. She felt like a baby when she picked up her phone to call Edward.

He offered to stay the night with her earlier when she told him Charlie would be working all night. She knew she needed to study, and Edward was a huge distraction, but that was before the storm rolled in.

"Edward?" She asked as soon as he picked up the phone.

"Bella, are you alright?" He asked, concerned.

"The power is out. Can you come over? I'm a little jumpy over here."

"Give me two minutes." He replied, and Bella knew he meant it.

Two minutes later she heard a knock at the front door. She ran to open it, and Edward stood on her front porch dripping with rainwater.

"Hey!" Bella threw her arms around him. He hugged her tightly.

He put his hand on the small of her back and led her inside. He kissed her and took off his raincoat.

"What did you bring?" Bella motioned to the bag he sat on the floor.

"Candles, a flashlight, and a deck of cards." He said with a smile.

They walked into the living room. Edward lit the candles, and Bella pulled pillows off the couch to make it comfortable for them to lie on the floor. While the storm raged outside, the pair played Gin Rummy until Bella started to get sleepy. Edward then pulled her close and wrapped her in the blanket. She slept in his arms until he woke her up for school.
