Edward pushed the backdoor open and dumped a giant armload of groceries on the kitchen table.
"Dude, what's all of this?" Emmett asked as he pulled out a bag of sugar.
"Will you put that down, please?" Edward jerked the sugar out of Emmett's hands. He was irritated. The trip to the grocery store had set his nerves on edge. The aisles were too narrow, the cart had a squeaky wheel, and everyone's thoughts had been so loud he just wanted to run screaming from the store, but he had a project to finish.
"Settle down, bro. What is all these for anyway?" Emmett asked, poking in the rest of the bags.
"I am going to bake Bella a cake," Edward replied as he organized the baking supplies.
"Have you- "
"No, but I have a recipe." Edward pulled his phone out of his back pocket. "It seems simple."
"What's it for?"
"Valentine's day. She is coming over tonight, and I want to surprise her."
"That's how you do it, bro, romance her with sweets and then…" Emmett made a rude and thrusting gesture with his hips.
"Emmett!" Edward warned. "It's just a cake." If Edward could blush, his cheeks would have been burning.
Emmett punched Edward in the arm. "Whatever you say." He then turned to leave, but he stopped short of the kitchen door, "I don't have any plans for the afternoon; want some help?"
The boys worked all afternoon baking a heart-shaped chocolate cake with pink vanilla frosting. Edward wrote Happy Valentine's Day, Bella across the cake in red, but he underestimated how much room he had, and the 'tines was a little squished together. Esme's kitchen was a disaster, but they had made a cake.
Edward could not wait to show Bella what he had made. When she came over that evening, he took her to the kitchen and unveiled his creation.
"Did you make this?" Bella asked, amazed.
Before Edward could answer, they heard Emmett bellow from upstairs. "I helped Bella!"
"He helped a little," Edward said bashfully.
"Can I have some?"
"Of course," Edward went to the counter and grabbed a plate and fork. Edward cut Bella a massive slice of cake. He pulled out a chair at the kitchen table for her to sit down. He waited anxiously. "Oh wait! One more thing." He ran to the fridge with vampire speed and got a gallon of milk.
"You thought of everything!" Edward beamed with pride. Bella took a big bite of cake. The frosting was so sweet it hurt her teeth, and the middle of the cake was a little underdone, but it was the best cake she had ever eaten.
