"It's our last summer of freedom, Bella. If we don't go now, we might not get to. We are both leaving for college in 6 weeks. Please say yes." Edward begged.
"Alright, I'll go," I answered. I can imagine the puppy eyes he is giving me. "What time do we leave?'
"I'll be over around 8. Bring your bug spray and wear old clothes. I fish off the dock!" The excitement in his voice was contagious.
"I'll see you then!" I hung up the phone and wondered what I had gotten myself into.
Edward picked me up at eight, and we headed to the pond. As he unloaded the car, I went down to the dock.
"Are you sure it's safe?" I asked, staring at the old wood. It was dark out by the pond; the only light was from the quarter moon.
"It's safe, I promise." He said as he walked toward me. "Here, take my hand just in case." I could make out his crooked grin. My heart fluttered at his touch.
We walked down the short dock and sat down. I kicked off my flip-flops and dangled my feet in the warm water. Edward put a fishing line on my pole and gave me a short lesson on how to cast.
We talked about our plans for the rest of the summer and the pressures of leaving home and going to college. Suddenly, he stood up, propped his pole against the railing on the dock, and toed off his tennis shoes.
"What are you doing?" I asked, terrified I am about to be tossed in the water. Before he gave an answer, he jumped off the dock, splashing me.
"Jump in!" He said as he sent an arm full of water my way.
I scooted back from the edge. "I can't swim," I admit.
He swam back toward me. When he got to the dock, he crossed his arms, anchoring himself, and looked up at me. Water was dripping off his eyelashes and his hair. My heart skipped a beat. "Do you trust me?" He asked, grinning. He swam out a few feet. "Just jump. I won't let you drown." He held out his arms to me.
I stood up slowly. I put my phone and keys next to my flip flops. I took a deep breath and put my toes over the edge.
"Come on Bella, I got you!" He winked.
I jumped, and just like he promised, he caught me. When I came up for air, he wrapped his arms around me pulling me close. Our eyes locked. Maybe it was the adrenaline, maybe the moonlight, but we were drawn together. His lips reached mine, and I knew I could never love anyone else.
