The commanding officer is outside trying to coordinate where everyone is supposed to go. He's about to call the 118 out when he hears a sound no firefighter wants to hear. Mayday.
"Mayday, mayday!" Bobby's voice cries out over the radio. "The floor has collapsed and two of my guys are down. I repeat, two of my guys are down and I need help immediately."
Before Bobby can even finish his words, everyone outside springs into action to save their fallen family.
… ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...
Bobby, Hen, Chimney, and Buck look down through the now open floor. They can see Eddie and Dan's lights, but they can't make out the rest of them.
"Eddie! Dan!" Buck lays at the edge of the hole looking down. "We have to get down there, Cap."
"The floor is unstable. If we try anything, we'll all go down. No playing hero, remember?"
"Our family is down there!"
"And we'll get them. We won't leave them behind."
Before anyone can say anything, one of the guys PASS alarms starts going off.
"Dan?" Bobby calls out.
"Cap?" Eddie's voice cuts through the smoke.
"Eddie!"
"Where are you?"
"We're above you. The floor gave out and you dropped about two stories. Are you hurt?"
"Nothing too bad."
"How's Dan and the kid?"
"The kid's fine and with me, but Dan's about 15 feet away. There's some rubble between us that I can't move."
"That's okay. Just stay where you are. We're trying to figure out how to get to you."
A group of fellow firemen come onto the production floor to help.
"Captain Nash."
"I've made contact with one of my guys. He's not hurt too bad. But my other guy still isn't responding."
The commanding chief nods. "I've had a look at the floorplan and I think we can go through the loading docks, down a couple hallways, and get down there. But we'll have to move fast."
"Eddie. We're going to make our way down there, just hang tight and don't try to move."
"What about Dan?"
"We'll take care of him when we get to you."
"Alright. I'll be here."
The crew quickly but carefully walks out of the room.
… ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...
Audrey is sitting at her desk sipping on ginger-ale while grading homework. The tv is on for some background noise. She just happens to look up as the news breaks the story about the factory fire.
"We have a crew on scene at the candle factory where a huge fire has broken out. There are reports of several employees trapped inside, and seemingly no way to get out. Fire officials are on scene working to contain the fire and rescue everyone inside."
The news anchor stops talking as the voice in her ear feeds her information.
"Oh my... We have just received word that the floor inside has collapsed and there are several fire fighters trapped. We don't know what station they are with or if there are any injuries, but we will keep you updated."
Audrey immediately pulls out her phone to call Eddie, but his phone goes straight to voicemail.
… ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...
Denny and Harry are running around the arcade while Karen sits at a table eating popcorn. She looks up at the tv behind the counter as the news story runs. She immediately pulls out her phone and calls Hen, but she doesn't answer.
… ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...
Eddie and Nathan try to clear some of the rubble that stands between them and Dan, but it's no use. It's too heavy and he's too tired. Through the darkness he sees the 118's flashlights coming towards him.
"Eddie?" Bobby calls out.
"In here!"
A moment later, they all appear.
"How're you guys doing?" Bobby asks, going to Eddie's side.
"I think my leg's broken," Nathan replies.
"Eddie?"
"I'm alright. Dan still isn't responding."
"We'll get to him. I want you both to go outside with Hen so she can check you out."
"I want to stay."
"I know you do, but my priority is making sure you're okay. We've got more than enough hands down here."
Eddie nods and he and Nathan follow Hen back out where the crew came from.
Bobby and the commanding officer assess the scene.
"This beam is load bearing. If we try to move it, this whole floor is coming down."
"Maybe we can climb over," Buck suggests.
"I think we might be able to move some debris on this back side of the beam without disturbing it."
Without another word, Buck starts grabbing debris and throwing it to the side. Everyone else pitches in. After just a few minutes, they make a dent big enough to be able to see Dan.
"Dan! Dan, can you hear me? It's Captain Nash."
Nothing. They keep digging until the debris pile is more manageable.
"I think I can climb up and over," Buck says.
Bobby nods. "Alright. But be careful."
"Yes, sir."
Buck carefully climbs up the pile and over, making it to Dan. He feels for a pulse. It's weak, but it's there. Buck covers Dan's face with the oxygen mask. After a minute, Dan's eyes start to flutter.
"Easy, you're okay."
"What happened?" Dan asks weakly.
"The floor collapsed underneath you. We're trying to get you out, but it's gonna be tricky."
Dan tries to sit up, but quickly lays back in pain.
Buck puts his hand on his shoulder reassuringly. "Don't try to move."
"I can't feel my legs."
"Don't worry about it. You're fine."
Dan looks up into Buck's eyes. "I'm not getting out of here, Buck."
"Yes you are."
Dan shakes his head. "Tell Kate and the kids I love them, and I'm sorry. Take care of them for me."
Buck shakes his head. "I'm not gonna do that because you're getting out of here. We all are."
The familiar creaking sound comes back.
Buck gets on the radio. "Cap! We need to get him out."
"Do you think you can get him on a stretcher and over this pile?"
"Yea, I think so."
"Come get it."
Buck looks down at Dan. "I'll be right back, I promise."
Buck lets go of his hand and runs back to the debris pile, climbing over it. Chimney straps down his medical bag onto the stretcher so Buck can have some supplies. They start to lift it up and over the pile, with Buck at the back end of it. Before he can get over, the creaking gets louder and dust starts falling.
"It's about to go," the commanding officer says. "We have to get out."
"Not without Dan!" Buck yells.
"We have to leave him, Buck," Bobby says.
"We can't! He's family!"
Buck starts to climb over the pile, but Bobby grabs him by the jacket and pulls him back. He tries to get loose from Bobby's grasp but it's no use. Bobby drags him out of the dark and smokey hallway while everyone else runs behind them. Just as they make it through the door, the floors start collapsing, followed by the walls, and then the roof. The crew collapses on the grass outside in defeat.
… ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...
Jo gathers her files from her desk and walks down the hall to the file room. She passes the break room and notices the large crowd gathered around the tv. She stops and sees what they're watching.
"The building has just collapsed! I hope those fire fighters weren't still in there. Last we heard there were several firemen trapped inside and a group trying to rescue them. We can only hope and pray that they all got out."
Jo is paralyzed as she watches the tv with fear and dread. She wants to cry, scream, and call Buck, but no sound comes out and her body doesn't move. Captain Maynard stands at the doorway.
"Jolene."
Jo looks up at her with tears in her eyes.
"Go."
Jo nods and runs back to her desk, quickly grabbing her things and leaving.
… ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...
Checking in! How's everyone doing? Were you expecting that to happen?
