We pulled into the driveway of our next safe house. Everyone instinctively reached for the door handles, Kit held up a hand for us to wait. We looked at him curiously.
"This house is already occupied. So there will be people here to help you kids with whatever you need. And here for protection. Remember you're guests. These people know what you kids have been through so they may be wary. Don't give them any reason to need us to leave."
He nodded that we could get out. Everyone shouldered their bags and started stepping out.
"Chloe," Kit said before I slid out. He motioned for me to shut the door.
The others started walking up to the house.
"You need to make a decision here. These people may know about your guys' powers problems from the Edison Group, but they don't know about your most recent issue. telling them would have consequences."
"Like?" I asked.
"Like them turning on you and trying to hurt you. Or. Them doing something to Derek before anyone else gets infected. Even supernatural people get scared when something new comes along Chloe. Especially when its a danger or threat."
"So what's the decision here?"
"You need to decide to identify as a necromancer or a werewolf once you step through that door."
I thought about it before answering, "Necromancer. I don't want to risk looking at or talking to a ghost that no one else sees. That'd be hard to explain."
Kit nodded, "My thoughts exactly but I didn't think it was my place to make the decision for you."
He grabbed his bag and got out, I followed suit. We joined the others on the porch and Kit knocked. I didn't acknowledge the questioning look from Simon. An attractive blonde woman opened the door. dressed in a navy blue tank top and black skinny jeans. She scanned us for a moment until her eyes landed on Kit.
"Kit," She exclaimed in a southern accent, "I can't believe you're here. It's been too long."
"Hi Tess," Kit smiled politely. "You were expecting us, weren't you?"
"Oh of course, come in," She stepped inside out of the way.
We filed in, I swore I saw Derek tense as he stepped past her. Maybe he was being wary of the strangers but she shouldn't be a stranger if she knew Kit.
"Shoes off if you don't mind. With such a full house, I'm trying to keep it as clean as possible." Tess said.
I took my shoes off and set them in a free cubby as I finally took a moment to look around the house. Like most safe houses, it was two story to hold plenty of bedrooms. The walls were all a pale gray as we stepped in further. The furniture was dark brown wood except for the couched in the living room which were mix matched. The living room and kitchen were attached into a it open area with the dining room off to the side and stairs on the other end of the living room. It smelled like cleaning supplies. I noticed a man standing at the stove cooking and several people in the living room.
"Like I said, we're a bit tight on space, I only have two rooms open," Tess apologized.
"Thank you Tess," Kit smile again. "Two is plenty."
Tess blushed and turned to pick up a rag from a table. She must have been cleaning when we arrived.
"Upstairs, first on the right and second on the left. Bathroom at the end."
We filed up the narrow stairs. Kit had us do our usual routine, Tori and I in one room and the boys in the other. I set my stuff down on the twin closest to the window but didn't sit. We had spent so much time in the car, all my sore muscles were cramping. I stood looking out the window at the yard. Farm country. It was grass and open fields as far as I could see. No chance of people sneaking up on the house unseen.
"Tess seemed a little flirty with Kit," Tori commented. "I wonder if there used to be something between them."
I turned around, "What?"
"Tess," she repeated.
I shrugged.
"Maybe she's some type of flirty creature."
"Or maybe that's just her personality." I tried to combat Tori's hypothesizing, I did not want to be part of gossip.
I quietly let Tori ramble off a few more outrageous ideas before we left the room.
"Girls," Kit calls us to their room.
We walked to the doorway but didn't enter, not wanting the room to feel too cramped. Kit quickly scribbled something down on two scrap pieces of paper and handed them to us. I saw that the boys were holding papers too. It contained a web address, username, and password.
"Here's your online academy. You'll reset your username and password to whatever you want when you log in. Choose your classes and take them at your own pace."
I really didn't see the point of including me in this. Out of all of us, i was the least likely to ever lead a normal life again. Getting a high school diploma was a waste of time. I would never have a career, home, and family. I was doomed to a life looking over my shoulder and moving around before people figured out what I am capable of.
"Thanks," I mumbled and stuff it into my pocket as I walked out.
