I heard the bed creak that the boys were sitting on. Derek or Simon was getting up to follow me but Kit must have stopped them because no one followed me as I walked back downstairs. Not knowing the rules or restrictions of this safe house, I approached Tess.
"Hey, is it okay for me to walk outside? I need to stretch out my muscles after that car ride."
Tess nodded, "Of course hun. Just stay within an acre of the house. You can see anything coming out here but we ask for people to stay close so they can hear someone shouting from house."
"Thanks," I nodded, grabbed my shoes, and walked out the back door.
I walked straight back until I hit the end of a grassy field. What I guessed to be the end of the acre. I turned left and started walking around the property.
I summoned Kyle and Liz, after a few minutes they appeared.
"Hey," Liz smiled, "Where are we?"
"Safe house," I replied.
"Nice," Kyle nodded with approval.
Liz finally noticed his presence when he spoke. She jumped back.
"Who are you?"
"Kyle. You must be the famous Liz," Kyle bowed. "Pleasure to meet your acquaintance."
I giggled watching them. At first I wasn't sure if they'd be able to see each other. But I'm glad they could. Liz smiled amused with Kyle. She looked over at me and gave me a thankful look. Glad for more company. I listened to the pair jabber on as we walked around the property line. Getting out and moving around was helping my strained muscle relax and remember they are human right now. Kyle told her all about his human life and how he never expected that this is where his life would go. Liz told him all about being a poltergeist.
I'm not sure how long we were out there but I eventually heard footsteps coming up behind us. I recognized it immediately. They were heavy and determined. Approaching fast.
"Chloe," Derek barked.
I didn't understand why he was so mad. I've been outside what could I have done to upset him? I glanced back at him and slowed my pace.
"Hey," I said.
Derek grabbed my arm, pulling me to a halt as he stopped. He turned me to face him. Kyle and Liz didn't notice, they continued walking, deeply engaged in a new friendship.
"You've been out here long enough. Do you really think it's safe to be outside?"
"Derek let go," I tried to pull my arm from his grip.
I'm not sure if he heard me.
"What are you thinking being outside alone after what just happened to us?" He growled.
I felt his grip tightening.
"Derek. You're hurting me."
That got through to him and Derek immediately let me go. He switched from anger to worry.
"Chloe, I-I-," Derek stammered out.
I took a step back from him. Derek reached out for me apologetically. I flinch back again.
"I didn't mean to," he said.
"You should worry more about what that man did to you not me," I replied with calm venom, "You are losing control."
I turned to walk back inside, Derek reached out again but hesitated. What I said had obviously stung.
"Chloe," he said softer. In that tone that I could never walk away from. "I'm sorry. I...I forget my strength sometimes under stress."
I turned back around, "Stress? We haven't even been here a day, what could be stressing you out? That man is far away."
"Tess," he sighed. "She's a werewolf too."
My composure changed, not that I forgave Derek, but because I understood he really didn't mean it.
"She's so nice and inviting though. That's not werewolf behavior I've seen."
"I know, she was a lone werewolf when she was recruited, not a fan of packs." Derek said. "Werewolves don't act like that lone or not. There's something about here I just don't feel comfortable with. Dad's been friends with her for a long time. I wouldn't be surprised if she was one of his contacts on how to raise me. I still don't trust her though."
I look Derek's hand, "You and I are going to work on you being a bit more verbal and less physical when you're stressing."
I took a moment to look him over, he'd still be black and blue for a while but his worst cuts were healing.
Derek nodded, "Allow me to start over." Derek cleared his throat. "Chloe, I"m worried about you being out here all alone in the open. Please come back inside where I can watch you and Tess."
I nodded, "I"m not alone Derek but sure. I'm starving, when can we eat?"
"Tell Liz I said hi," Derek said. "You know you'll have to sneak some food again right? Since they don't know about your werewolf sized appetite."
I didn't bother asking how he knew what Kit said. He'd overheard the conversation.
"I don't want to sneak food again," I pouted. "I always felt like I was starving."
"Just try to portion control, okay?" Derek asked. "We don't need another werewolf baby conspiracy."
I smiled and rolled my eyes.
Derek started walking towards the house, "Come on."
