Derek snuck over again tonight. I was laying in bed trying to tune out Tori's snoring when he came in.
"Does your dad know you keep coming over?" I asked him.
Derek shrugged and sat next to me. He sat still for a moment before laying beside me.
"I know I'm saying this a lot but I'm sorry again."
I sat up a little and pulled Derek close to me. Reversing the roles. He laid his head on my stomach and I put my arm around him. I gently played with his hair. Derek started to relax and after a few minutes, drifted off to sleep.
We stayed like that for some time. I didn't bother with watching the clock, I didn't want to sleep tonight. I just watched out the window and played with his hair. I closed my eyes and scanned for anything dead nearby. I sensed a rabbit nearby and thought about raising him. But didn't, there was no point to besides something to do. Which seemed like a cruel reason to raise the dead.
I spent a lot of that night thinking about what happened. Derek telling me that I would be forced back into the change soon. How would that be explained to the others? How would we explain a teenage necromancer writhing on the floor turning into a werewolf?
I think Derek was having a bad dream at one point during the night, he was kicking and making sounds. I put my leg between his and the wall so he wouldn't accidentally put any dents in it.
When the morning sun broke over the horizon, Derek stirred. A beam of sunlight hitting him right in the face.
"Morning," I said sleepily.
"How long have you been up?"
I shrugged. "A while."
"What does a while mean?" Derek glared.
I shrugged again. Derek growled softly and pulled me closer to him.
"We are going back to sleep."
I growled back but didn't fight him. I drifted off quickly.
By the time I woke up it was late afternoon. I looked over to see Tori working away on a laptop.
"The dead awakens," she said.
"What are you doing?"
"A witch let me borrow her laptop so I can start some classes and get out of here."
"You really think you can go lead a normal life, don't you?" I ask sitting up.
"Of course, when was the last time you saw me use my powers? I've gotten good at maintaining them. I can pass for a normal human." Tori bragged.
"You know, I wanted to ask why you didn't use them when we got attacked."
Tori glared at me like I said it was all her fault. "I was in shock, that didn't cross my mind while I was having my face smashed in and you obeyed like a good little puppy."
"It's not like I had the choice," I replied.
Tori rolled her eyes and went back to the laptop.
"Just like you didn't think Kit would find out about you two staying together?" Tori smiled. "He is not happy about you two playing house."
"Shut up Tori," Derek growled through the pillow. "Your voice is sandpaper against my ears."
Tori shot him a look he didn't see and turned her attention on the laptop. Derek sat up and rubbed his face, I wondered why he was so tired. He didn't show any signs of changing. But Derek also didn't reach for the pain killers right away like he had been lately. So maybe he was tired from his body focusing on healing.
Derek excused himself to the bathroom to get cleaned up. I threw the bed back together and got changed into jeans and a black t-shirt.
I walked out into the hall and nearly walked into Kit.
"Late night huh?" He asked.
I shrugged, "Couldn't sleep seeing as I have to constantly keep my mouth shut."
"What?" Derek asked as he stepped out of the bathroom.
I looked at Kit, "Yeah. What could I be talking about?"
"Nothing Derek," Kit said and he walked into the guys room. "I do want to have a word with you though about your whereabouts."
Derek followed him into the bedroom.
Kit didn't bother with a sound proofing spell. I heard him yell at Derek for staying over in my room. I understood where Kit was coming from as a father. But I also understood Derek. He told Kit that he was worried about me when it came time to change and he wanted to be there for me the moment I needed it. Kit told him that reason wasn't enough, that I would come to them if needed.
I didn't want to keep listening to this so I went downstairs and ran into Matt again. He was reading a book.
"You're big on literature aren't you?" I asked.
Matt looked up and smiled, "I would say so. Having electronics is too risky so good old fashioned books are all I need."
"Electronics are risky?" I asked.
"You can get tracked," Matt nodded.
"And who exactly are you running from? If you don't mind me asking."
Matt chuckled, "Would you believe me if I said the vampires of Arizona? Nasty creatures once they catch your scent."
My jaw dropped.
"I've been with Tess here for about a year now I think. If I can wait another year or two, I think I can go on my merry way and hope they've forgotten about me."
"Hope?" I repeated.
Matt nodded, "Yep, hope. There's no book on how long vampires hold grudges. Some told them for the rest of their lives, some for a decade or so."
I sat in disbelief.
"What?" Matt asked. "Is it so hard to believe vampires are out there? We have werewolves in this very house."
"I know, I just never thought I'd hear of their existence again. I assumed they weren't really around here."
Tess came over, "We aren't bad mouthing werewolves now are we?"
Matt smiled and shook his head, "No sweetie, we aren't. Chloe is just experiencing more of the world."
Derek and Kit came downstairs. Both to my surprise were not visibly angry.
"Hello sugar," Tess smiled brightly at Derek.
Derek nodded back a polite hello and followed his dad to the kitchen.
I stood from my seat and told them I would be right back. I walked back upstairs, deciding screw Kit. Derek was going to learn the truth today. Kit didn't have the right to withhold something like that. But he at least deserved credit that it should be done in a contained environment.
"Tori, I need to talk to you," I said as I stepped into the room.
She looked up from the laptop annoyed until she saw how serious my expression was.
"I'm listening."
I shut the door, keeping my voice low. "I need your help with something if you don't mind getting off your no magic moral ground for a bit."
Tori was intrigued. "What's the job?"
"It'll take a lot of juice. Once I have the people in the room, I'd need you to seal it so no one could leave and silence it so no one outside it can hear what is going on."
Tori nodded, "I could do that, but I would need to stay in the room to maintain it."
I nodded, "That's fine. How many people can you handle? Cause I wanted Simon here too. A voice of reason."
"You're trying to contain Derek," Tori smirked. "You don't want him obliterating the house or attracting attention as you break news."
I nodded slowly.
"You're dumping him aren't you?!" Tori shouted.
I shushed her, "No. No. There's just something he needs to know about."
"Well you better be fine with all of us knowing it then because I wouldn't have the juice to put you two in your own private bubble within the bubble of the room."
I shrugged, "Can't hurt to get everyone up to speed as long as you're sure you can handle this. I don't want anyone leaving until everyone's calmed down."
Tori nodded.
"No tricks alright? I'm trusting you not to bail early."
Tori put her hands up, "I promise. I want to see this drama through."
I sighed, nervous. "Alright, will you go get Simon?"
I thought about bailing on the whole situation with how excited Tori was. It just made me more nervous.
We went downstairs to go find the boys.
