Summery/disclaimer: Time for another chapter of A Frostbitten Arrow. Enjoy the 2000-word chapter. I don't own RWBY or Destiny, Monty Oum, Rooster Teeth, and Bungie do.
(Schnee Castle 12:05PM December 12th.)
Weiss slowly tiptoed out of her room as she looked around. Weiss walked towards the garden, careful to mask her footfalls so not a soul heard her footsteps.
Weiss blinked as she heard the sounds of talking, someone was still awake and talking. Weiss believed everyone had retired to their quarters for the evening. The massive blue and white vibrant halls of the castle seemed so alien at night.
"You're not cold? It's below subzero out here." Weiss heard as she moved towards the garden. "What am I saying? Your hotheaded enough to shield yourself from the cold. You know Lady Schnee didn't bring us here to act rude." Weiss heard with sarcasm dripping from the voice.
"Funny, because you seem to not WHY notice she asked us to come." Weiss heard as she blinked. "We're a wild card, she met us while we were busy trying to not get diced up by Fallen. You seem to forget she noticed me kill the captain by ramming my sparrow into it… Then followed by beating it with a rock." Weiss heard as she hummed.
She crept down the stairs and stared through the doors. Weiss noticed Mason was in the guardian with his ghost. The hunter seemed preoccupied with talking to his ghost. The shattered moonlight seemed to bathe the guardian who stood in the middle of the wide-open garden, surrounded by shrubs of various Grimm and ancient Atlesian knights.
"Do you have to be such a 'hotshot'?" Nomad questioned as Weiss slowly walked to the door. "I know you enjoy living from fight to fight, treating life like some big adventure." Nomad added to which Mason chuckled.
Weiss opened the door with a soft click, she was about to take a step forward before she heard the sound of a trigger click. Weiss looked up to see Mason had his gun drawn in one hand, the barrel reflected in the moonlight. The statue of her grandfather who was clad in Atlesian armor overstood the garden, looking down on her surprised, but not shaken Granddaughter. Weiss slowly stepped outside, walking through the tall stone arch that sat at the beginning of the maze, past the delicately sculpted stone benches and tables that marked the garden's vast open space.
"Hey, didn't see you there." Mason said as he casually put the weapon back into its holster. "Sorry, I'm so used to things that make noise trying to kill me. I wake you up by accident?" Mason asked, watching as Weiss closed the door behind her.
"No, I was simply going outside like I do every night." Weiss responded before looking at Mason with a raised eyebrow. "I guess you do stalk the night." Weiss joked to which Mason chuckled.
"Can't sleep to be honest." Mason said with a shrug as he looked over his shoulder. "Vacuo is a lot different from here, you know. Why are you up so late? I thought you guys have lots of important royal things to do or something like that." Mason added as Weiss walked towards him.
"No, not really, there's a great many politics involved in Solitas." Weiss responded with a shrug as Mason hummed. "I did have some questions I wanted to ask you. I've never met a hunter, well… Never outside of the films or media about your kind." Weiss added to which Mason blinked.
"Hunters unlike Huntresses and Huntsmen. Man, that must be hard to talk about without confusion." Mason muttered as he rubbed at his temples. "Anyway, we kinda keep to ourselves when it comes down to it. Hunters live out in the wild, it's not a job plenty of people are good with living out in the desert." Mason said, gesturing around with his hands as he did so.
"Yes, I imagine the life of a drifter is fraught with much hardships like that." Weiss stated to which Mason shrugged.
"You're the curious type like me, aren't you?" Mason responded as he looked up at Remnant's shattered moon. "I could see it when we talked at the main room, you like seeing something new that you haven't known before. I've got an eye for reading people, it's quite handy if you think about it." Mason added, shrugging with amusement as he turned to Nomad.
"Also? Nomad sucks with snarking since I don't think he realizes what sarcasm is or when someone uses it at all…" Mason muttered, rolling his eyes at the ghost in question.
"I'll let you talk and come back later." Nomad stated as he thought about how this would go before vanishing back into Mason a second later.
Mason crossed his arms over his chest and leaned on the pillar next to Weiss, drumming his fingers on his arms.
"So, am I bugging you by talking about Hunter business?" Mason questioned as he sighed, rubbing at his temples. "Your family is nice; I'm surprised your sis would be in the military. I've heard a lot about the Schnee royal family, nothing about them about as good as Winter was when she took the head off a Fallen Captain cleanly." Mason stated as he shrugged to himself, his cloak billowing behind him.
"Winter always was the better one at combat." Weiss replied to which Mason hummed.
"Something tells me there's two sides to that story and I haven't seen yours yet." Mason said before looking up at the moon. "It's got to be harder than what I usually deal with." Mason stated as he shook his head.
"Beg pardon?" Weiss questioned, tilting her head to the side.
"I know someone who wants to be out adventuring when they can't." Mason said then pointed to Weiss's eyes. "My mentor said I had that same look. The one where I'm constantly thinking, always ready to snap if I don't find something to do. You don't want to be couped up in some fancy castle, sipping tea and talking about the latest nobles, do you?" Mason asked to which Weiss felt her eyes widen.
'How does he KNOW!? Did Klein tell him about the case? Does he know more about the…' Weiss started to think to herself before a siren began to go off.
Weiss knew that sound, it was the sound of a raid, had someone come in to try and attack Solitas? Weiss didn't know who would be crazy enough to assault the kingdom in the dead of night.
It was then a trio of Bullheads emerged from overhead… Along with a hulking warship which made Mason narrow his eyes. He knew who the bigger ship belonged to, but the Bullheads made him far more curious when it came down to it. He guessed he'd figure it out at the moment and such. Mason shook his head and sighed before rushing to the edge of the balcony.
"Speak of the devil…" Mason muttered before turning to Weiss. "I'd go inside, this is going to get nasty. I know those guys, they're a LOT more dangerous than they look." Mason said before leaping over the edge.
Weiss rushed to the edge to see the hunter was already gone, only the wind left billowing as she looked up at the ship to see there was alien dropships starting to descend from the vessel. Weiss could only question what happened to bring these monsters to their doorstep tonight.
"Your highness, your needed inside!" Weiss heard from a soldier as they dragged Weiss inside.
Weiss could only hope Mason was ok, but she had a guess that the hunter was going to be on the news tonight.
(With Mason)
Mason landed in a crouch and looked up at the Ketch in the head, it belonged to the House of Devils. They had followed him and Winter from Vacuo. Mason was curious as to HOW they had followed them, but if the House of Devils were here? Then that meant a lot of looting and attempts to blowing up the rest of the city.
"Nomad? I need an update." Mason said as he sighed and brought a hand up to his holster. "How bad do you think it will be before it gets better?" Mason questioned, watching as more Skiffs started to descend from the belly of the massive warship.
"It won't last long considering the power of the Atlesian Military, they already have units heading into battle." Nomad reported as the hunter headed into the street.
"I'm guessing the fallen aren't smart enough to know that?" Mason questioned while he shook his head, putting a hand to his temples as he sighed and shook his head and hummed.
"Yes, considering the majority are spreading out into the more crowded in the city." Nomad added to which Mason drew his knife as he looked at the city.
"Ok then, I'll be heading towards their boss." Mason stated while he started marching into the middle of the city. "I'm going to assume there's a baron or such leading their raiding party?" Mason asked as he looked up at the dropships.
There were at least a few dozen soldiers in the air. The tall, stark white skyscrapers that seemed to stretch on forward blocked his view. He slowly walked down the ebony grey street, pausing only to hazard a look at another skiff. The haphazard craft looked like a scavenger descending on fresh meat.
Then again? It didn't shock him that much at all, that seemed pretty much what it was to him.
"You should know for a fact that there's at least 2 dozen hostiles on Atlesian sensors. Currently, at least." Mason heard as he chuckled with mass amusement.
"Oh, now we're going by hunter rules when it comes down to it?" Mason questioned before a shriek caused him to turn to the side. "Something tells me the first rule of being a hunter still applies. You contact the army and fill them in?" Mason questioned as he continued to advance through the car choked highway.
"Already on it, should I fill you in on….?" Nomad started to say before the screech filled the air once more.
Mason reached and pulled his weapon out of its holster in one fluid motion. He brought the gun up, staring down the barrel.
"No." Mason said before thumbing the trigger as the first gunshot of the night rang out.
(With Weiss)
Weiss looked out over the city. She watched a creature dressed in leather like materials collapse to the ground, a fresh bullet hole punched in their piecemeal armor. The soldier collapsed to the ground as sirens rang out through the massive empty halls of the castle like a ghost song.
"Incoming aircraft, their approaching the castle grounds!" Wiess heard as she blinked and then turned and ran towards her room.
Winter looked at Klein who stood in the three pieces suit he always did. He said nothing, but gave Winter a small smirk.
"Lady Schnee, I believe Commander Clover is waiting for your orders?" Winter heard from Klein as the man looked at the assault, his frown vanishing from his pale face. "My heavens, this siege on Atlas must end." Klein added, pressing a gloved hand to the glass a moment later.
"Every home is safe from assault and units are already deployed." Winter said before looking over her shoulder. "But something tells me this night is going to get a lot more interesting…" Winter added, looking through the snowflake-stained windows.
