Chapter 4 – Acclimatization

Fitness Room 4

For Natasha Yar, a normal day begins with training, so every morning she finds her way to one of the ship's training rooms. The rooms have everything that every member of Starfleet could wish to stay fit. Different weights to lift, machines for specific training, mats for floor exercise or martial arts, a few rings, antigravity training units, and many more things. Including many different adjacent alternative training halls, like for swimming, team sports and saunas...

Of course, the combination of modern medicine and healthy replicated food makes it so that no human nowadays is fat or even unathletic. But to be part of Starfleet security you need more than that. Especially if you want to go toe to toe against naturally stronger aliens than humans, like Klingons or Vulcans, at least as far as she sees it.

Sadly not all of her staff sees it that way and there are no rules against it. Of course, there are regular fitness tests to make sure you are still able to perform your duty. But those are so standardized that they don't have to train at all. (1)

So it was quite a surprise to find another human in fitness room 4, a Vulcan or an Andorian is not unusual, both people are much more fitness conscious. But a human was a surprise, so early in the morning. (2)

Therefore when she entered, she stopped for a moment and blinked. 'Huh, that is a surprise. Didn't think I find another human train, especially at this time.' Because of her surprise, she looked a little closer. 'No one of my boys, that is for sure. I wouldn't have forgotten someone with that body. muscles all over, not a bodybuilder, more like a swimmer. Certainly, just looking at those wide shoulders and good proportionate muscles, he has to be.'

Natasha begins to heat up a little. 'And what kind of muscles those are, yum.' Without her realizing she is licking her lips and begins to look like a predator found prey. 'He has to be a civilian, these clothes are not Starfleet standard for exercise. They show a lot more skin, he wears practically only short pants, shoes and a sweatshirt.' Her eyes wandered over all his glittering exposed skin. 'Not that I'm complaining.'

Her eyes move away from his body and to the weights that he is lifting. 'Oh, that looks way too much for a normal human to lift.' Then she is looking over to the wall next to the lifting station to the localized gravity controls. Normally used to adjust them to the Users homeworld gravity. 'Hm, he probably has turned the gravity down to impress, or maybe he just doesn't know, meh unlikely.'

She grins and sees her chance, so she goes over to the wall with the gravity control. 'Let's see...' she stops and her eyes widen, "1.6G!" without realizing it she spoke the last part out loud and got so the attention of the man. °clang° "Hey would please not change that." Pleaded the man when he sat up. "You have no idea how much trouble it was to convince the computer that an increase in gravity was safe for me."

"I'm sorry when I saw how many weights you had on I thought someone did forget to turn up the gravity." The man took his bottle and took a sip of his drink, then he looked at her and grinned. "You thought I was trying to impress."

Natasha looked at the weights. "Well, you certainly did." "Heh, Computer deactivate Trainingsprogramm Michael G.6!" "Acknowledge!" He stood up, took the towel that he laid on and put it over his shoulder. "My name ich Michael." He stepped closer to her and hold out his hand. But Natasha was slightly distracted by how large Michael was. He was practically towering over her. This incredible giant with such a kind and gentle smile.

"You alright?" Natasha took a moment to realize that she was staring and when she shook herself out of it she blushed a little. "Ehm yeah right, I'm sorry, my name is Natasha, Natasha Yar." She took a moment to collect herself and shook his hand. "Chief of Security of the Enterprise." 'And, now comes the moment where he gets scarred of my position and loses interest.'(3)

"Impressive, as pacifistic the humans became nowadays, it's not a position that many are probably holding. That says a lot about you." Natasha blinks surprised. "Thank you, and yes you're right. Most security chiefs in Starfleet are Vulcans or Andorians." Michael nods impressed and begins to dismantle the weights of the barbell.

"I'm impressed by how much you can lift, may I ask why so early in the morning?" "Couldn't sleep, so I studied some stuff, but after a while, it became a little too much and I decided to get my head free, so I came here." That is something Natasha could understand, training was for her too always a good way to get her head clear.

"You wanna show me if your muscles can live up to the show they gave." Michael stood up from the dismantling of the weights. "Sure, I'm always ready to prove myself." Natasha stepped closer to him and poked him in the chest. "You and me on the mats." Michael began to grin. "Okay, your Cabin or mine?" Natasha grin again like a predator. "You wish, sadly I have a shift in one hour." She is turning around and moves to the martial arts area. "Therefore we have to use today those here."

When she was walking in front of Michael she let her hips swing just a bit more than usual, fully knowing that Michaels eyes are clued to them. "Alright, but please be gentle, it has been some time."

On the way to Ten Forward

Michael just finished his training and was now on his way to relax a little. Of course, the training fights were an overwhelming victory for the Commander, or as he was allowed to call her 'Natasha'. Afterward, they did hit the showers.

He had to admit, the unisex changing- and shower room was a surprise. But he guessed if you are part of a Federation of hundreds of worlds and as many Races. At some point, you just don't care to differentiate anymore. Especially if every second species has a different idea of social norms. You put a lot of single shower cabins for those who want a little more privacy and one big common shower room for efficiency.

Luckily Natasha wasn't much for prudence, efficency was her way of life. She used the big shower room and almost dragged me with her. In the end, I did wash my hair and back and had a few nice handfuls. Sadly her shift began soon so we had to cut it short. A cold short shower later and we both were done for the moment, with a promise of revanche.

At least another mystery of the future was solved, I was able to ask why the showers were using water and not that 'sonic pulse vibration' shit. Judging from her explanation, sonic pulse cleaning is great when you want to get rid of dirt, but to get rid of sweat nothing is better than water and soap. Modern showers can use both. Also, many people just like the feeling of a water shower much more than just vibration.

So now here I am clean, fresh but still a little frustrated, on my way to Ten Forward in the hope to drink away my frustration or maybe even finding a lonely girl from nightshift who is looking for a little camaraderie.

Ten Forward

Michael enters the large room and similar to a scene in an old western movie pulled a lot of stare at him. I was almost inclined to complete the scene by strutting slowly to the counter one hand near his colt and ordering a scotch. But he just shook his head, smiled shortly and went normally to the counter.

"What can I get you?" 'Well then, that is a surprise.' "Guinan! I thought you wouldn't come on the ship for a least another year?" Guinan stopped surprised and blinked. "I'm sorry, do I know you?" I leaned a little forward. "I know you, we have a common friend." That made her curious and leaned forward herself "Oh and who would that be?" I paused for a moment. 'drum-roll' "Q!"

Guinan eyes widened and she grimaced. She stepped away from the counter and signaled me to follow. We went to a free table by the windows in one of the corners, with a little distance between us and the next people. "Not really a friend more like a menace."

I smiled genuinely at that and sat on of the chairs, Guinan on the other. "Yeah, his methods seem to be a little extreme and excessive at times. But his reasons are usually sound of." Guinan began to become irretaded. "What GOOD reason could Q have to be such..." "a pest?" "Yeah!"

I chuckled a little. "Guinan, let's be real, I don't know what organization you belong to if any. But I know that you have a quite unique connection to time and I'm pretty sure you are powerful enough to defend yourself against Q." Guinan calms down a little, but crosses her arms and listens. "Q had always a goal, a reason for his pranks and shenanigans, but he was and is still bound by certain rules, laws that not even he can ignore. So he had to become imaginative and inventive to reach his goals and as a side effect most people nowadays see him as a 'Chaosgod'."

By the mentioning of laws, Guinans reacted contemplatively. "What reasons, what rules?" Michael leaned back in his chair, smiled genuinely and shrugged. "That, you have to ask him yourself." (4) For a while it became quiet between them. Then Guinan suddenly stood up and went back to the Bar.

I stood up as well and followed her when we reached the counter. "So, now that this is over. I remembered I haven't introduced myself yet, I am Michael, nice to meet you." "Guinan, as you already know, what may I bring you?" "How about a german beer?" "I fear that you have a better chance asking for Romulan ale. Germany was almost completely destroyed during the eugenic wars, like most of Europe."

Michaels is shocked by this news. "Don't tell me, American Beer is the only one that survived the flow of time, that's no beer it's only piss water." Guinan was chuckling at that. "Has been a long time since someone called it that. But luckily there are some alternatives, I recommend South Korean beer. It's the best that survived all the wars." "Well at least something, alright, a light one."

Guinan gave Michael a glass of light beer. Then he took a sip "Erg, what is that? I mean it looks great, it's cold enough and definitely tastes better than the American piss water. But it has some kind of strange aftertaste and it seems to lack alcohol." Michael looked at Guinan. "Is that an alcohol-free beer?" "Nowadays the federation uses synthohol instead of alcohol, same taste, no bad side effects." "I drank a lot of alcohol in my days and I can tell you that does not taste the same."

Guinan shrugs. "Well, around 10% can taste the difference, if they try both and only 1% of those don't like it." Michael looked disgusted at his Glas and then put it down. "Seems like I am on that 0.1% of people, It tastes disgusting." Guinan put the glass away thinks for a moment smiles and gets a bottle from under the counter. She fills with it a glass for Michael. "Try this."

Michael takes the Glas and sniffs on it.'The smell is alright.' And takes a sip. Then he stops for a moment. 'Divine!' "What is that?" Guinan is grinning. "Romulan Ale, it's actually illegal to possess in the Federation." Michael is staring at his glass, then he shrugged. "Well, I'm not a member of the federation, more!"

Conference Room – Deck 1

In contrast, to common belief, a conference meeting of the senior officers is not something that happens every day. In the best-case scenario, such meetings happen once a month. If it happens more often then there is something seriously wrong, especially if a meeting is called in on short order. This time they at least had a few hours which meant it wasn't world-ending, but still possibly dangerous. Therefore the moods of the officers who didn't knew yet were not the best.

When Captain Picard entered the room the talks between the officers ended and they moved to the chairs. Even though the Chairs weren't reserved, the tradition made, more or less, sure that everyone knew where they sat. The first officer is to the right of the Captain the Counsilor to the left, the second officer second to the right, the first medical officer second to the left, and so on.

"Good it seems like we are all here, then we can start." With that the Captain sat down, followed by his officers. "First let's begin with our new orders, Data?" Data nodded shortly. "Yes Captain, last night we got a message from Starbase 473, we were given orders to travel to a nearby star system, on a rendezvous course with the science ship Tsiolkovsky. Its orders were to observe the final days of a dying red supergiant star. But it seems like something went wrong, the last few messages that they received were, strange."

"Strange in what way exactly?" Asked Comander Riker. "Not further defined." Picard nod to that. "Hm, it seems like we will have to see what exactly happened once we are there. How long will it take us until we will be there?" "With Warp 8, 5 days 23 hours 37 minutes, sir."

"Then let's come to the second matter for this meeting. Last night I had a visit from Q." "Q, what did he want this time?" "Well, Number One, for one he wanted to inform us that the test isn't over yet and from what I took from our talk it's likely that he is only one of his kind, the messenger. Whom we shouldn't shoot, just because the message is bad."

Comander Riker made a disgusted face. "A whole race of Qs." Counsilor Troi saw his face and said. "Commander, you shouldn't judge a whole race on the behavior of a few." Realization comes is shown on the face of the Commander. "Of course, I'm sorry."

"The second part was the beginning of the next phase of the test. 'They' wanted to see how we react to, and I quote, a lost soul. He introduced me to a young man and then left. The conclusion is we have a guest on board now."

"A Guest, who?" Picard answered lieutenant Worf's Question. "His Name is Michael Kane, a human from earth. But from the late 20th to early 21st century and an alternative reality. At least from his testimony." At that point, Dr. Crusher jumps in. "That I can confirm, my scans prove that he is from the past as well as from another timeline. And by the great difference in the frequency, I would guess one that is quite far away from us."

Picard added to that. "From our short talk, I can summarize, that in his reality the eugenics wars and WW3 never happened, yet at least." "Which makes my other scan results even more interesting. His metabolism is working a lot faster than that of a normal human, he is almost five times stronger and his brain works at a speed I don't even want to guess. Also, it seems like his cell regeneration is over the top including his DNA, it's very unlikely that he will die of old age. His immune system is so advanced that most immunizations will be unnecessary. I would even say that he probably will never get sick."

To that Worf asked with worry. "He is an Augment?" "As I said to Commander Data before, his mental stability is good, he is not more dangerous than a Vulcan." At that point Natasha Yar stated. "He is at least a potential danger, but to be fair he is not the only one. as the Doctor mentioned, if we want to follow the thought process, then we would have to see every Vulcan on board as a potential danger, as well as Commander Data and Lieutenant Worf, no offense." To that Data as well as Worf nodded.

Riker argued that. "You can hardly compare that, Augments killed millions of people back on earth." Troi countered. "Our earth and so did the old Vulcans on Vulcan," Worf added reluctantly. "As did the Klingons with our kind before the Hur'q came." "Additionally to that is the fact that my scans show that his DNA seemed to have undergone a successful genetic resequencing when his body was already fully grown. He is not an Augment as we know them."

Troi adds to that. "We cannot blame anyone for what others did." To that the Captain said. "We will not blame him for what the Augments did in our past. We will also not treat him as a danger or a potential threat. As Commander Yar already implied, if we start with that, without good reasons, we will never stop and that is a very dangerous path, that I'm not willing to go. For now, he will be treated as a guest on board.

I'm quite certain that Q, or at least someone of his kind, is responsible for his augmentations. It would fit the idea of a test. Our reaction to a normal human would just not be enough to judge, I guess." Riker settles down in acceptance. "Alright then, what else do we know of him?" "He was born July, 11th 1991, in Berlin Germany, and died January the 1st 2023, in London Britain. It seems like Q recruited him at this point and gave him a new life, here."

"He is also quite charming." Added Counsilour Troi, to which many looked at her. "And has an impressive body." Natasha Yar said without even realizing it with dreamy eyes. She only reacted after she realized that everyone else was staring at her, at which she blushed a little and said sheepishly. "I met him this morning in fitness room 4. We fought a few turns on the mats. I didn't know who he was at that point. His fighting abilities are not the best in the world, but his learning capacity is impressive. I wish my people would learn that fast."

The Captain did grin a little. "For the short time he has been here it seems like we already know more about him than I thought, is there anything else." "Yes, Captain." "Mr. Data?" "When I was showing him his quarters he recognized me right away as an android." "That is not that unlikely Data, many people realize fast that you are not human."

"Yes Jordie, but only very few identify me as an android right away. He also asked me if I'm the only one and was irritated when I did tell him I was. So he asked for other forms of AIs or robots. He found it very strange that there were none and that the federation doesn't use robots. This piqued my curiosity, I have since then investigated why we don't use either of those and what I found was disturbing."

Captain Picard became serious quite away. "Disturbing, in which way?" "Well sir, for that I have a little to explain first. Robots is an umbrella term for many areas. One of the most important ones for the development of a society is the area of heavy machinery which are commonly used for work that is too heavy or too dangerous for normal peoples."

Comander Riker nod to that. "We all had it in history, it was widely used in humanities past too but with the development of the Replicators there was no more need for them." "Well sir there lies the problem, a replicator can't substitute for the work of heavy machinery. For example, the Federation could with intensive use of heavy machinery raise the mining efficiency by a factor of 7, plus improved work safety. And that is only one of many areas I found that could be improved with the use of robots of all kinds.

The Federation did use robots heavily in the past including many other races in the Alpha- and Beta-Quadrant. But since the mid-23rd century almost everywhere the use of them seems to disappear. And it's always given the same explanation, 'With the development of the Replicators began the use of robots to become less common', even in cases where it shouldn't have." Everyone was greatly irritated by this.

Captain Picard sat in his thinker pose and looked thoughtful. "Computer, if we would upgrade the Enterprise with machinery commonly used mid 23rd century, how much more efficient could she become?" "The efficiency of the Enterprise-D could be increased by a factor of three." The eyes of everyone, except Data, widened in shock, then Dr. Crusher followed. "How much could the work safety be improved?" "The death rate could be reduced by 87%, the injury rate by 53%."

"Even an increase of 10% would be enough to justify the cost of an upgrade of the entire ship!" The Captain nod. "Correct Mr. La Forge. Computer, why won't ships be built with such improvements?" "Unknown." Commander Riker turned to Data. "Data you said that the use of robots did disappear everywhere, not only in the federation?" "Indeed Comander."

To that the Captain said. "Which was probably the reason why this was possible at all. If no one else has robots there are fewer reasons to ask, why we don't have them." Comander Riker stares at the Captain. "You think someone is responsible for this?" "Someone has to be responsible, this is too big to be a coincidence. And whoever it is, has connections everywhere.

Mr. Data, please continue your investigations, but carefully, no trace may be traced back. Also please delete any entries in the Log that mentioned our suspicion. For everyone else means that for now, keep your eyes and ears open and your mouths closed." Everyone at the table nodded to those orders. "I will get in contact with a few friends in Starfleet, people that I can trust. For now, everything shall carry on as usual, dismissed." With that, the conference ended.

Michaels Quaters

I was sitting on the small couch in my living area, right under a big window. With a glass of Orange juice in one hand and a self-written book in the other hand. Of course, the Book was replicated but what was written inside was self-made. Also, it was not the first one. In the last few hours I not only wrote six books, but I also did it in a completely new constructed code made out of 6 different dead languages from all over the Quadrant.

Now some people would wonder why all the trouble, what could be so important and what wouldn't it be better if it's never been written down, it was necessary. Since my augmentation, or at least since the NZT I got a perfect memory. I can remember everything, all I ever saw, felt, smelled, heard, tasted, every thought I ever had, every dream and nightmare. But it was too much, it was not manageable. Even worse, if I had no clue what I was supposed to remember, if a memory got out of view, then it was the same as if I had forgotten it. So I created a mind palace, just like in The Mentalist. (5)

But my mind palace was an ever-expanding library and one quickly lost the orientation. An Index was needed, and each Book was for a different theme. Technologies, Races and possible Enemies, Ideas and plans and so on. Everything that could be useful in my memories became an entry in the index, which let me remember what it was. After all, even if I have a perfect memory, my perception of it is definitely not perfect.

I closed the index and put it to the others. For now, this was it I will continue them at a later date. Next, I drank my juice and took my pad from Q. 'Let's see how my auction goes. Oh, a new entry in Quests.'

[Welcome back to your Quest App!

You have new entries, do you wish to only read the new entries? If you choose 'No' everything will be displayed.

Yes / No]

'Alright sure, I don't have to read the same shit again and again, so 'Yes'.'

Minor Change: Guinan is much sooner on the Enterprise-D

Change Reward: A Bottle of Aldebaran whiskey ("It is Green!")]

'Mitsubishi MK-6... Oh, the Mechs of Avatar, nice. Once upgraded with Star Trek tech they certainly will be effective.' I grin like a predator. 'The bottle of Green I will be put up for auction. But the ten bottles of Ambrosia... I mean, Romulan Ale, I will keep for myself.'

I went from the Quest App to the Auctionhouse App. 'First, let's see how much progress the wine bottle did. 37k Credits!? Seems like mainly three contestants have bid against each other and it hasn't even been a day yet.' I stopped for a moment and then shrugged. 'I mean even in my old life there have been some people who paid quite a lot for collectibles and that what I sell is the real thing, not any replicas. It must be a dream come true for collectors. And a potential Gold mine for me.'

I grimace. 'I guess for the good of my wallet I will put up one of my bottles of Romulan Ale.' And so I create two new auctions one for each bottle, starting a bid for the Bottle of Green with 1k Credits and for the Ale with only 200 Credits. 'Only 200 Credits for that divine Ambrosia, that is an affront!'

After I calmed down a bit, I began to look through the different auctions, I didn't think I would find anything that I could afford, I had only 550 Credits. But it was always interesting to see what was offered. To know what I could buy one day. 'Let's see, Weapons, Resources, Slaves... Okay, I will definitely not sell slaves, but I guess I could buy some and then free them right away. Could be a good way to get loyal employees.

Ahh, here is something interesting an Asgardcore for, 37Billion Credits.' I let out a sigh. 'I'm not even surprised. A database with all that knowledge including AI interface and advanced replicator function. Of course, it has a high price, it's definitely nothing I can afford anytime soon.' I twisted my face in an annoyed way.

'Let's see what is in my price range.' I activated the search function for it. 'Nothing really interesting, mostly stuff that is still at the starting bit and most of them still going over 20 days. Yeah for now I will find nothing useful here.' I turned the pad off and put it away.

'I think I will take a nap.' Even though my body doesn't need much sleep anymore, my brain can still get exhausted. So I first took another shower with water, I don't like that vibration shit. And, then I went to bed and took an afternoon nap.

1. Even in the Future people are lazy as fuck. No matter what some may think, if OUR society proves something, then the desire to improve yourself is very rare if it at all exists.

2. Even with shift work, only a few people are willing to train early in the morning.

3. Only a few men like strong women, most are intimidated, and some just don't like it when the woman is stronger than themself.

4. Michael could have told her his conclusion, but it's always better to hear it from the source itself.

5. Another one of my favorites.

Darlok – My first response of course goes to the one who wrote the first review. First of all, thank you for your nice words.

As well as for your recommendation, I've begun reading the story and certainly took inspiration from it. Also no matter what, I will keep the influx of magic as low as possible in my story.

Kreep13 – Next in line, is someone who wrote three times, one for each chapter, thank you for that.

First, you found a TNG SI that was completed. I'm impressed, I haven't found one yet.

Second, I always liked stories when they got the reader to think and create questions, so I also try to do the same. As for my favorite Captain, in Star Trek, it would be Archer, he was just more like a real person, with real problems.

Third, the SG-replicator that he has is the version created by Thor so that Mayor Carter could study it. It has no knowledge of the Ancients or the Asgard and its programming is protected by Asgard code. At some point, he will reprogram it and use it more sensible, but that will take a while. As for Asgard or Ancient knowledge, absolutely on his wishlist of Michael, but as expensive

as they will be, definitely not very soon.

As for upgrades of the enterprise, in the small term certainly planned. But over whole, he is an Augment, and no matter the goodwill that he creates with the crew, Starfleet will never accept any kind of bigger upgrades.

Frankieu – Next on the List, two reviews, thank you.

First, let's just say there are many kinds of empires and not all of them have borders.

Second, there have been many stories where the MC has brought up the problem with changes in the Timeline, how much or how little he/she/it should change it, use the knowledge, try to stop changes, and so on. I wanted to approach this in a completely new way and I think the Star Trek verse is the perfect reality for that. It is so comprehensive and extensive, that it is quite possible to predict how the universe would react to changes. But even then many people don't understand time, as Dr. Who said, "Time is not a line, it's more like a river. Throw in a stone and it creates waves but the way of the river won't change."

As for the soul question, that is something that should everyone decide for themself.

Sajuuk – Thank you for your Review.

First, saving Natasha Yaar is on Michael's to-do list, but how, is still undecided.

Second, the mirror dimension is as far as I see it, just another timeline and Michael has enough to do with his own.

Third, the tech from other universes over the auction house is very expensive and therefore rarely used. How much of that applies to the Star Trek universe also has to be seen.

Fourth, Michael will evolve and become better, one way or another. But as already implied Q made sure that his Body is locked to the Star Trek universe until his work for him is done. Therefore no Chi, Ki, or Magic.

Fifth, gear, techs and gadgets are already planned.

Sixthed, to be fair I didn't think of super soldiers, but now that I think about it. Star Trek has everything needed, tech-wise at least, to create super soldiers as good as Spartans of Halo, if not better. The only thing lacking would be an appropriate instructor, the people in ST fight like they are in the wild west.

Also, I have decided for now to use Grammarly, I will see how that will work, if not I can still find a Beta Reader.

Azai Jin – Thank you very much for your Review

First thanks for the notice about the Tempest, it was an honest mistake, it has already been corrected.

Secondly, Omnitools are certainly planned, and EDI is less likely. Michael will not recreate AIs that already exist in other universes. It would always be just a copy and he wouldn't feel right about it. There are too many moral problems with that.

Koldbones – Thank you very much for your Review

Yeah, true there are no real blue emeralds, but it's the same problem with the fact that there are no real fishes in the world, scientifically correct, but I just don't care.
