"What are you guys doing?" I asked the two. Propping myself up on my elbows. They hovered next to me, level with the seat.
"You summoned us in your sleep last night," Liz said.
"Oh, sorry."
Kyle laughed, "Sorry? You have nothing to apologize for. We couldn't find you. You forgot Liz's sweatshirt so we've been looking everywhere. You helped by summoning us."
"You're in a good mood," I said surprised.
"You've found us and you've given me a new friend," Kyle said. "Why wouldn't I be?" He held a hand up to the side of his mouth and whispered loudly, "If only she wasn't in pajamas all the time, I'd think about asking her out."
I laughed, Liz gasped and swatted at him. Hand passing through his shoulder.
"Who on earth are you talking to?" Derek's voice rumbled.
I looked up, we were in the SUV, Derek and Simon were looking at me like I was going mad.
"Friends," I answered.
"Is Kyle back?" Simon asked.
Kyle smiled, "He remembered me!"
I nodded, "You just made his day."
Simon smiled, "I'm glad."
Derek turned back around and put the car in drive. He glanced back at me concerned, "Who is Kyle?"
Kyle's hand shot up, "Me!"
I chuckled, watching him, "He's a mutual friend of Liz and I."
Derek mumbled something under his breath about not being told about ghosts.
"Why didn't you guys wake me up?" I asked, sitting up and stretching.
"We tried," Derek said.
"Yeah, you were out cold," Simon nodded.
I changed the subject before I accidentally brought up my nightmares.
"Where are we going?"
Simon looked at Derek for the answer.
Derek kept his eyes on the road as he spoke, "I hope you don't mind but I looked at your phone. It just kept buzzing and buzzing this morning and was really getting on my nerves. It was Tess passing along information she picked up from Lauren. My father is from Upper Michigan. He caught wind of us when you pulled that stunt in New York."
I was a little bothered he checked my phone but I wasn't hiding anything so it wasn't that big of a deal. I was more bothered with Derek's attitude. Why was he being so short and sort of rude? He wasn't going to change, was he? It had been a while now.
"It's fine," I mumbled. "How long of a drive is that?"
"We'll be there by the end of the day," Derek said.
So I had less than a day before facing the Alpha again. Less than a day. I thought about that for a moment, the last time Derek met him; he was impulsive and instinct driven. He forgot about the well being of others…me… and that was before he knew who this man was. What if he lost it again and I lost my chance forever? Stuck forever in this state of semi-changing.
Simon's POV
There was so much tension in this car I felt like putting the window down to be able to breathe. Derek was sliding off the rails again. He was going to change or punch the crap out of something. He'd been short tempered with me ever since we got up. Chloe was pretty depressed by whatever was going on in her head. She didn't always hide it well when something was bothering her.
I wanted to ask them what was going on but I knew better. It would just stir up more trouble. Derek never wanted to talk about what was going on with him. At least with me. And Chloe wouldn't talk about whats upsetting her in front of Derek. She hated upsetting him. It was a lose lose situation having them both in the car right now and there was no way I was going to get Derek to pull off at a rest stop to talk again. He was determined to get to Michigan before the end of the day.
"Hey," I said, wheels turning. "If we'll be there by the end of the day, then we're showing up to werewolf territory as the suns going down. Do we really want to face off at night in an unfamiliar place?"
Derek didn't say anything.
"Earth to Derek?"
"I heard you," he grunted.
"And you're fine with showing up at a disadvantage?"
"It's when they'd least expect it," Derek replied.
"Are you're willing to risk Chloe's life for a little bit of surprise?"
"It'll be fine."
I felt a cold chill, Liz or Kyle must have moved closer to me.
"No it won't be fine," I argued. "You're sacrificing the person you're trying to help."
The cold breeze passed again. I ignored it.
"No, I'm not," Derek growled.
The cold rushed past me this time and the car came to a halt. Derek yanked it onto the shoulder before the car behind us hit us.
"What the hell?" I shouted.
"It wasn't me," Derek shot back.
Liz. She was demanding our attention.
"Liz," I turned around.
Immediately I saw why she was trying to get our attention. Chloe was spasming and blood was all over her.
"Chloe!" I shouted.
I shot out of the door and into the back. Derek did the same. He grabbed her face and focused her eyes on him.
"Chloe! Can you hear me?"
She stopped moving. If she could hear us, she wasn't able to respond.
"What do we do?" I panicked.
"Do not get any blood on you," Derek warned. "She's not breathing."
I stayed out of the way like he wanted. Derek started pressing on her chest. I wanted so badly to do more to help but what could I do that didn't get me infected?
"Come on Chloe! Breathe!"
She did. She spit mouthfuls of blood out and gasped for breath. Chloe had been drowning in her own blood and we didn't hear a thing because we were too busy arguing. Derek sat her up gently, giving her time to breathe.
"Are you ok?" I asked.
Chloe looked at me, the flicker of fear in her eyes answered my question. She didn't know. I got back in the car and sat beside her. Derek growled at me warningly, there was blood everywhere. I put my hand behind her back and let her lean against me.
"I've got her," I told Derek. "Just drive. Get somewhere we can get her cleaned up."
Derek glared at me but obediently got back in the drivers seat. Chloe looked up at me, I gave her a smile.
"Just keep your eyes open," I said softly. "Try to stay focused."
"Ok," she said softly.
I held up three fingers in front of us with my free hand.
"How many fingers?"
"Three."
"Good," I nodded. I paused for a second then said, "I don't know if you can see Liz or Kyle but tell them thank you for getting our attention."
Chloe shrugged, she was just trying to focus on what was right in front of her. I kept making small talk with her, trying to maintain her attention. She was giving short responses but she was able to follow the conversation. Derek pulled into a parking space at a rest area. He got out and came around to the passenger side where I was sitting. Opened the door and grabbed me by my collar. He yanked me out of the car with a surprising amount of aggression.
"Go get cleaned up NOW," Derek roared. "I swear to god I will kill you if you're infected."
Derek very rarely laid a hand on me like that, he was definitely losing it. I quickly ducked inside to wash up before he could yell at me again.
