Chapter 13

Gwendalyn sat in the chair in the console room of the Tardis with her arms crossed. She was rather upset that the Doctor hadn't had a chance to come and talk to her about what had happened. Perhaps he didn't have the guts to do so just yet. She was beginning to lose hope of the whole thing.

"And that weird munchkin lady with the big eyes? Do you remember? the way she looked at you! And then she opens her mouth and fire comes out!" The Doctor said with a laugh.

"I thought I was going to get frazzled!" Rose said with a grin.

"Yeah. One minute she's standing there, and the next minute roar!"

"Yeah. Where was that, then? What happened?" Mickey questioned looking up, slightly confused. He was genuinely curious about what it was about.

"Oh, it was on this er, this er planet thing. Asteroid. It's a long story, you had to be there. Er, what're you doing that for?" The Doctor questioned blinking a few times looking at Mickey with his brows furrowed.

"Because you told me to."

"When was that?"

"About half an hour ago."

"Er, you can let go now." The Doctor said feeling a bit stupid for not telling Mickey to stop.

Mickey removed his finger from the button he was pressing. "Well, how long's it been since I could've stopped?"

"Ten minutes? Twenty? Twenty-nine?"

"You just forgot me!"

"No, no, no. I was just, I was, I was calibrating. I was just. No, I know exactly what I'm doing."

Suddenly the time rotor blew up.

Rose blinked a few times in confusion. "What's happened?"

"The time vortex is gone. That's impossible. It's just gone. Brace yourself! We're going to crash!"

Gwendalyn got up to her feet quickly and she put a purple barrier around everyone inside the Tardis.

The Doctor looked over at Gwendalyn with a thankful look on his face.

The Tardis came to a harsh and sudden stop and gas masks fell from the ceiling as the power went off.

The Doctor looked at everyone. "Everyone all right? Rose? Mickey? Dalyn?"

"I'm fine. I'm okay. Sorry. Yeah." Mickey said as Gwendalyn removed the barrier from them.

"She's dead. The Tardis is dead." The Doctor said softly looking at his beloved Tardis. He couldn't believe it, she was gone.

"You can fix it?" Rose questioned whether they would be able to get back to where they needed to be.

The Doctor looked over at Rose solemnly. "There's nothing to fix. She's perished. The last Tardis in the universe. Extinct."

"We can get help, yeah?"

"Where from?"

"Well, we've landed. We've got to be somewhere."

"We fell out of the vortex, through the void, into nothingness. We're in some sort of no place. The silent realm. The lost dimension."

Mickey opened the door looking out. "Otherwise known as London."

Gwendalyn pursed her lips together in worry. Something didn't feel right to her. The air felt off to her and it was concerning.

"London, England, Earth. Hold on." Mickey picked up a discarded newspaper that was on the ground near the Tardis. "First of February this year is not exactly far-flung, is it?"

The Doctor looked around London. "So this is London."

"Yep."

"Your city."

"That's the one."

"Just as we left it."

"Bang on."

"And that includes the Zeppelins?" The Doctor questioned looking up into the air.

"What the hell?" Mickey questioned looking up into the air and seeing massive airships passing overhead.

"That's beautiful," Rose said in awe.

Gwendalyn's hands gripped at her sides knowing that something was very very wrong.

"Okay, so it's London with a big international Zeppelin festival." Mickey wondered if they were in the future, but the paper gave the proper date of them not being gone that long.

"This is not your world." The Doctor said, looking at Rose and Mickey.

"But if the date's the same, it's parallel, right? Am I right? Like a parallel Earth where they've got Zeppelins. Am I right? I'm right, aren't I?"

"Must be."

"Not must be it…" Gwendalyn said finally speaking up after being silent for a long while.

Mickey looked over at Gwendalyn, happy to hear her voice again. It was so odd not hearing her speak and now he was relieved that she was speaking again.

"So, a parallel world where…" Rose trailed off only to be cut off by Mickey.

"Oh, come on. You've seen it in films. Like an alternative to our world where everything's the same but a little bit different, like, I don't know, traffic lights are blue, Tony Blair never got elected."

"And he's still alive," Rose said, staring at an advert for Vitex Lite, cherry flavor starring Pete Tyler. "A parallel world and my dad's still alive."

"Don't look at it, Rose. Don't even think about it. This is not your world." The Doctor said firmly hoping that she would listen to him.

"But he's my dad and…" She touched the advert triggering a short film to play.

"Trust me on this." Pete's voice rang out through the air.

"Well, that's weird. But he's real."

Gwendalyn crossed her arms not liking the idea that Rose was getting emotional about her father being alive and well. She knew that this wasn't going to end well at all.

"He's a success. He was always planning these daft little schemes. Health food, drinks, and stuff. Everyone said they were useless. But he did it."

"Rose, if you've ever trusted me, then listen to me now. Stop looking at it. Your father's dead. He died when you were six months old. That is not your Pete. That is a Pete. For all we know, he's got his own Jackie, his own Rose. His own daughter who is someone else, but not you. You can't see him. Not ever."

Gwendalyn let out a breath shaking her head lightly. She knew that Rose wasn't going to listen to either one of them. She could only hope that Rose would listen.

The Doctor looked over to Gwendalyn for help.

Gwendalyn let out a breath shaking her head. "If she trusts either of us to listen she will be the Doctor, but leave it up to her to decide. You've told her." She said as she turned to go into the Tardis.

DWDWDW

The Doctor looked at Mickey rather frustrated as Gwendalyn sat in the other chair ignoring him. "I told you to keep an eye on her."

"She's all right," Mickey said, brushing off the statement from the Doctor.

"She goes wandering off. Parallel world, it's like a gingerbread house. All those temptations calling out."

"Oh, so it's just Rose, then? Nothing out there to tempt me?"

"Well, I don't know, I can't worry about everything. If I could just get this thing to…" The Doctor kicked the console.

Mickey's brow raised looking at The Doctor. "Did that help?"

"Yes."

"Did that hurt?"

"Yes. Ow."

Gwendalyn rolled her eyes, scoffing a bit. "Serves you right."

The Doctor began to look around at the Tardis hoping that he would be able to find something that would indicate that his beautiful Tardis was still alive with power. "We're not meant to be here. The Tardis draws its power from the universe, but it's the wrong universe. It's like diesel in a petrol engine."

"But I've seen it in comics. People go hopping from one alternative world to another. It's easy." Mickey said, looking at the Doctor.

"Not in the real world. It used to be easy. When the Time Lords kept their eye on everything, you could hop between realities and home in time for tea. Then they died and took it all with them. The walls of reality closed, and the worlds were sealed. Everything became that bit less kind."

"Then how did we get here?"

"I don't know. Accident? Should've been impossible. Now we're trapped. What's that?" The Doctor questioned noticing a tiny green light.

"What?"

"That, there. Is that a reflection? It's a light! Is it? Is that a light? I think that's a light. That's all we need. We've got power! Mickey, we've got power! Ha!"

Gwendalyn looked up as he began to go down towards the main part of the console underneath it. She got up to her feet and took a soft breath moving towards where Mickey was.

The Doctor looked up gleefully. "It's alive!"

"What is it?" Mickey questioned leaning over and looking down.

"It's nothing. It's tiny. One of those insignificant little power cells that no one ever bothers about, and it's clinging onto life, with one little ounce of reality, tucked away inside."

"Enough to get us home?"

"Not yet. I need to charge it up."

"We could go outside and lash it up to the National Grid."

"Wrong sort of energy. It's got to come from our universe."

"But we don't have anything," Mickey said his brows furrowing together in concern.

"There's me." The Doctor cradled the green light in his hands and blew on it causing it to glow brighter. "I just gave away ten years of my life. Worth every second."

Mickey blinked seeing the green light starting to go out. "It's going out. Is that okay?"

"It's on a recharging cycle. It'll loop round, power back up, and be ready to take us home in, oo, twenty-four hours?"

"So that gives us twenty-four hours in a parallel world?"

"Shore leave. As long as we keep our heads down. Easy. No problem. Let's go and tell her."

Gwendalyn let out a breath. "Easier said than done, Doctor." She said, crossing her arms and shaking her head lightly. "We need to keep her away from her father and mother so she doesn't make a mess of things."

The Doctor nodded his head knowing that Gwendalyn was stating the truth.
