Derek's POV
Nate was infuriated that someone was trying to mess with the genes of one of his werewolves. Even if she wasn't an official member of the pack, she was still his bloodline. He was not going to stand for the scientific advancement of turning his werewolves into humans.
Nate, Sylvia, and one other werewolf decided that they were going to come with us to have it out with the scientists. They drove their own car behind us. Not that we knew exactly where we were going. Dad kept trying to call Lauren so we could trace the call. He tried contact after contact to see if anyone knew any information about this new facility. Dad hit dead end after dead end.
Everyone was obviously trying to hide that they expected me to explode. They expected me to storm out the door, yell, scream, growl, go nuts, change, command everyone. But I just sat here silently. I was saving my anger for something. Or someone. I'm not sure yet. Lauren? My father? The first scientist I see? Who knows. But I am sure that I am saving it. I am so angry I can barely see straight and my silence was putting some of them on edge. They'd never seen me hit this level of anger before.
It wasn't just anger though, it was pain. I did this to Chloe. This was all my fault. If I had just kept a better eye on her. If I had just not let Dad get to me and make me mad that day. If instead I had scooped her up in my arms and set the computer aside. Giving her my attention. What was the last thing I even said to her? I couldn't remember. I remember that I was being a jerk though. What if that's all Chloe remembers of me? Does she think that I'm not coming for her? Looking for her? Does she think that I don't love her?
I physically ached for her touch. I needed to feel her soft skin in my arms. To hear her heartbeat pick up when she saw me. The hidden smile on her lips.
But what if she was already human... what was going to happen then? I couldn't knowingly re-infect her. But I can't live without her. What was I going to do if she was already a human...
Chloe's POV
I was outside for hours probably, time was hard to track. But it was getting darker out so I knew it was a substantial amount of time. I eventually shifted back to human and the ghosts stopped coming and going. Liz and Kyle popped away and didn't come back. I didn't have anything of theirs to maintain the steady connection and felt like I would be a bother if I just kept calling them back.
The necromancer opened the door, "Saunders. Its time to come back in."
I sighed and followed orders, utterly exhausted from changing bodies. I just wanted to go to bed, even if it was a metal slab. I followed them to my cell, walked in, and collapsed. Falling asleep immediately.
When I woke, an unknown time later, I expected to be strapped down again but I woke in my cell. Breakfast foods sat on a tray by the door. The smell of the food was intoxicating, I didn't stop to wonder if any medications were mixed in them. I ate everything as quickly as I could. I knocked and left the tray by the door, two people came. One picked up the tray and walked away with it. The other was holding a clipboard.
She looked at me and said, "You were scheduled to spend some time with the other subjects today but after your last encounter, we aren't sure if you should go back just yet."
I growled thinking about them. They betrayed me.
She nodded, "That's what I figured."
As she left, the echo from the door latching drowned out my growl. Making me realize how much quieter it was. I took a deep breath and growled again. Again it was still quieter than normal. Was something wrong with my hearing or was my werewolf-ness really slipping away? I could just be weaker from my mini outburst of magic yesterday. But was the answer ever that simple?
I'm not sure how much time had passed before the scalpel doctor came to my cell.
"Chloe," he said. "We have made some advancements and we are ready to try them out."
I backed away from him.
"Don't make this harder than it needs to be. I really don't want to use up my sedatives."
I stayed back, away from the doctor. "No. Kill me instead."
"What?"
"I'd rather die that be part of your experiments any more," I said as I suddenly lunged at him.
I don't know what my plan was, there was no way I could get out of the building even if I managed to get past the doctor. But I had not accounted for people being outside the cell. The doctor simply stepped aside as I lunged and I landed right into the arms of two assistants with syringes. I screamed curses as everything faded to black.
