Derek's POV
The ground was shaking the building. I could barely hear anything over the noise. There was no way to know if any Edison Group people were upon us. I watched Chloe summon and give power to Tori. Where had Tori been lately? She had accumulated quite a few new tricks.
Simon grabbed my arm and shouted over the noise.
"Dad's on the other side of the wall. We need to get people over it."
He was right, we were sitting ducks in this courtyard, building collapsing or not. Simon and I grabbed Nate and Ron and gestured at the wall, they got the idea. We started grabbing subjects and lifting them up over the wall. It was in no way an easy task with the ground shaking, but we were doing it. We lifted people up and tried to have them jump up and grab the ledge.
I lifted a girl up with Ron and we pushed her up. As we went to try to give her a boost to grab the ledge, something pierced through my injured shoulder. I shouted and fell to my knees. Blood started flowing. I'd been shot. I turned around to see a man in a doctors white coat standing in the doorway with a gun in hand.
I think Simon was shouting at me but my focus went on this man. I got back on my feet and charged at him. Tackling him. His gun went off again but I have no idea if it hit me. I didn't feel anything but rage. What if he'd been pointing that at Chloe or Simon?!
Simon's POV
Dad was on the other side of the wall with a ladder he found. Where he found it? No clue and now was not the time for those kinds of questions. The building was collapsing from whatever Chloe and Tori were doing. I grabbed Derek and the werewolves and we started boosting people over the wall to get to safety. It wasn't safe to go running back into the building to find an exit.
I pushed a guy up with Sylvia until he could grab the ledge. It wasn't easy with the ground shaking but he was on the taller side so this guy was easier to help. Over the rumbling I heard a sharp crack. I thought the foundation was finally giving until I heard Derek scream. I look over to see him gripping a bloody shoulder.
"DEREK!" I yell.
He doesn't hear me though, he goes charging at the door. At the Edison Group guy who shot him.
"No!" I yell as the gun goes off again.
Nate was in survival mode or something, He yanked me around not caring about Derek wrestling the guy.
"Help them over the wall damn it."
The windows of the building started bursting and shards of glass rained down everywhere. There was a sharp crack again but this time I knew it was the foundation. The cement below us started splitting apart. The courtyard wall finally gave and started to crumble. I lunged for Chloe and Tori and grabbed them. Their hands came apart but it was too late, the structure was coming down. We ran over the remains of the collapsed wall to Dad.
"Where's Derek?" Dad shouted.
I pushed the girls towards Dad and doubled back without answering his question. Probably a stupid move to go running into a building that's coming down but I wasn't leaving Derek.
I did not have to run far. Derek and the man were just inside the hallway. Derek was pounding his fists into the guy.
"Stop!" I yelled at him.
Derek snapped back into reality and looked up at me. Pieces of the ceiling fell around us.
"We need to go now," I said.
I grabbed his hand and pulled him to his feet. The courtyard door was blocked off now. We started running down the hallway to find another way out. Derek spotted a broken window and went towards it, jumping through it to the outside. I followed suit. With Derek running ahead of me now, I got a look at his injuries. His shoulder was bleeding badly but so was his abdomen. That second shot had hit him in the stomach or something. Derek was in serious trouble.
We ran to the group and didn't slow down, the matched our pace and we ran for some distance. I don't know how far. But finally Dad called for us to stop by some warehouses.
"We have to be in the clear by now," Dad said. "They would've caught up to us."
I looked around, everyone was hunched over catching their breath. We had some subjects with us but not as many as we released from the cells. They must have run off in other directions. I hope they were okay.
I looked at Derek, "You're not okay."
It wasn't a question.
"I'm fine," Derek said but he was already pretty pale.
"Whats he talking about?" Dad asked.
I gestured to his blood soaked shirt like it was obvious.
"He's been shot twice."
"Derek," Chloe was concerned.
Derek leaned against the warehouse wall, "I'm fine."
Tess momed up immediately, "Shirt off Derek."
Derek winced and tried not to make any noises as he did so.
Derek's POV
As much pain as I was in, I did not want to admit it. Tess saw right through me though. I slid down the wall and sat on the ground. She went to work inspecting me.
I watched Chloe, she looked worried. Why did I have to be injured right now? Why couldn't I be experiencing the joy of having her back? Holding her in my arms and telling her everything was going to be ok.
Something slapped my face.
"Focus Derek. You're losing a lot of blood."
