A few hours later, Matt arrived home. I was helping Tess clean up dishes as he came in the front door. Matt's eyes were wide and he seemed a bit shaky.
"Matt, are you ok?" Tess asked.
He gave a shaky smile, "Oh yeah. Totally fine."
Tess frowned at him, "You're lying."
Matt glanced at me, "Would you mind giving us a minute?"
Tess stopped me from going anywhere, "You know that anything you say to me, you can say to her."
Matt came closer and leaned over the counter for support.
"One of the kid's home was down south," Matt said to Tess. "Arizona."
"Why didn't you come back with that kid?" Tess asked. "One of us could have taken them."
"I was already out that way," Matt shrugged. "Thought it would be fine."
Tess rolled her eyes, "You should have known better."
"It's a bit late for that," Matt said. "I, uh, need to go deeper underground."
"You're leaving?" I interrupted them.
"You're more than welcome to come with Chloe. Since you're running from those scientist people."
"Neither of you are going anywhere," Tess shook her finger. "They can't track a scent down a highway."
"But they can hack surveillance cameras."
I walked around the counter and gave Matt a hug.
"Please don't leave us. We can help, just like how you helped us."
Matt hugged me back, I had reached his soft side.
"Ok fine. I'll stay for now."
Matt was on edge the entire day but helped us with the dishes and offered to train me some more to work off some energy. I thanked him for the offer but I wasn't werewolf anymore, I wasn't going to win any physical fight.
"I swear, I don't know how someone forgets they are a necromancer," Matt shook his head at me. "Let me help you fine tune some of your necromancy skills."
Derek appeared in the doorway, "Only if I'm coming with."
He did not like leaving me alone with Nate walking around. Derek didn't like that Nate was totally ok with biting and infecting me.
We went out the backyard and trained. Derek mostly watched, sometimes he tried to get involved but Matt was worried about his stitches. I tried to take his advice from our prior session about using larger animals but there really weren't any that I could find. I stuck to the smaller animal carcasses that I could locate and tried to compensate but summoning more of them. Testing to see how many I could control at a time. Matt admitted that I was getting better and giving him a run for his money. But I think he was just off his game since his nerves were shot.
Three days later.
Kit was in charge of driving the subjects home now. Of course, the only ones that were left with us were the ones that I knew from my time with the facility. Derek's stitches were removed and he seemed to be doing fine. He was extremely protective over me because Nate kept popping up and asking me where my decision was at. But in all honesty, being or not being a werewolf wasn't the thing at the front of my mind right now. It was Aunt Lauren and the doctors. I woke up drenched in sweat almost every night, my throat was hoarse like I had been screaming but no one said anything to me so who knows if I was screaming in my sleep. These people, as twisted as they were, they were doing stuff that they thought was for the greater good of supernatural creatures. And I caused the deaths of them all. How could I not have severe depression after that?
"You know that the boys have noticed right?" Tori asked me as we got dressed in the morning.
"Noticed what?" I asked. Looking down at myself, did I smell or have a new tattoo I didn't know about?
"That you're depressed," she said.
"Why wouldn't I be after what I've been through?" I said and then sort of shut down. I didn't want to talk about what had happened to me.
Tori tried talking a few more times but I was unresponsive. I walked down with her to breakfast to find no one in the kitchen or living room.
"This isn't odd at all," Tori said.
A hand went over my mouth and muffled my shouting. Tori spun around and glared at the person holding me. I kicked them in the shin and spun around. It was Derek and Simon stood beside him. They both held a finger to their lips. Something was going on.
Derek pulled us into Tess' room.
"What's going on?" Tori asked.
"The subjects are downstairs keeping quiet," Derek said.
"From?" I pushed.
"I don't know, when we got up Tess and Matt were just gone."
They hadn't told anyone else about Arizona. I didn't know what to do, do I tell them or do I keep Matt's secret? He had told me that a persons word meant as much as their actions.
Simon saw the wheels turning in my head and elbowed Derek.
"You know something Chloe."
I shook my head, "No sir."
Something was knocked off the kitchen counter and clattered on the floor. I walked to the bedroom door.
"What're you doing?!" Derek hissed.
"Pulling a classic stupid move," I replied and stepped back out to the kitchen. Ready for it to be a stranger. But it was just Nate.
"Sorry, didn't mean to wake you," he said.
"You didn't," I said. "Everyone's on edge with Tess and Matt gone."
The others emerged from Tess' room. Tori went down to get the subjects.
"They just went into town for some more food," Nate said. "You guys need to calm down. What's going to happen out here?"
The rest of the day went along smoothly, Tess and Matt came back with food. He was still a little on edge but seemed to calm down a little more. I spent most of the day wandering around without purpose. I was exhausted from lack of good sleep but I didn't want to sit down. Sitting meant accidentally falling asleep which meant nightmares.
