While they were hanging out Lorelai started to feel some discomfort in her pelvis and her back. She took a breath and realized quickly they were contractions.
"Okay. Ladies. I think I'm in labor. Rachel call Spencer. Now please." Lorelai said
Rachel took out her phone and called Spencer.
They had just gotten back from a case when Spencer got the call. He told the team, and everyone got to their cars and headed to the hospital.
When Hannah and Rachel had gotten Lorelai to the car the snow was coming down and coming down hard. Rachel had never driven in a storm before, but she knew she needed to get her sister to the hospital, or she would be delivering the baby herself on the side of the road.
Hannah got into the car as well and the three of them headed to the hospital. It took them over an hour to get there between the snow and the fact that it was rush hour traffic.
The team had already made there was there. They were closer to the hospital from the FBI building than Lorelai and Spencer's place.
Spencer was pacing the waiting room. He looked nervous. Aaron was nervous for his daughter and granddaughter as well but at this moment he needed to be a father-in-law and reassure the younger man.
"Spencer sit." He ordered gently putting a hand on his shoulder.
Spencer took a breath and did as he was instructed.
Aaron sat next to him. "Spencer look at me." He said
Spencer looked away from the door that he was watching and to Aaron
"I get it your scared. You're about to become a father. That child is going to be completely dependent on you and Lorelai. But I know you both will be great parents. And I know you're worried about her out there in the storm. But they are just five minutes away. And her doctor and the nurses are all ready for when she gets here. So, take a breath." Aaron told him.
Spencer took a breath and nodded a bit.
"You are ready for this Spencer," Aaron said.
Spencer nodded again as the doors opened and in came Lorelai in a wheelchair.
Spencer got up and they went to the delivery room right away. Her contractions were about a minute apart and this baby was coming.
Rachel and Hannah flopped down in the waiting room. They were both glad to be there the stress of getting Lorelai there had tried them out.
Aaron went to them. "You two okay?"
"That was stressful…." Rachel said
"Well, you did well. You both did. You got her here. I'm proud of you both and I think your dad would be too." Aaron said looking at Hannah.
Hannah nodded and smiled. "I should probably text him what's going on."
Emily came over and handed both girls a bottle of sweet tea from the vending machine.
Rachel and Hannah smiled at each other. It was both their favorite drinks. They both thanked Emily.
In the delivery room, Lorelai's clothing was removed and she gave birth just minutes later. When the baby came out the umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck she was blue and not breathing. But because of the quick work of the doctors and nurses, the baby cried just a couple minutes after birth and her color was becoming normal.
But those minutes were the longest minutes in Lorelai and Spencer's lives. Relief washed over both of them when they heard her cry. She was weight and measured. Six pounds four ounces and eighteen inches long. The baby was placed on Lorelai's chest by a nurse.
"Your baby is perfectly healthy," the nurse said with a smile.
She was born at thirty-five weeks, but she was perfect.
Lorelai was in tears and looked at the little girl whose life completely depends on her and Spencer.
Spencer kissed Lorelai's head and then his little girl's head. "You did it, Lor. She is perfect. Looks just like you." He said
Lorelai looked at him and shook her head. "She has your mouth. And ears." She looked back at the baby.
Spencer smiled. "Looks like both of us."
Lorelai nodded. The room around them was quiet. While they had their first moments as a family of three.
A little later. Lorelai asked for her dad to be sent in. Aaron went in. He smiled at his daughter.
"Dad. I want you to be the first to meet your granddaughter. "Hailey Jennifer Reid." She said softly
Aaron teared up a bit. "She is perfect." He said.
"You want to hold her?" Lorelai asked
Aaron gently took his granddaughter and sat in the chair.
"Hailey would be beyond honored," Aaron said
"Her name was decided when I had that dream a few weeks ago. Well, her first name. The middle name came later." Lorelai said
Aaron nodded.
After Aaron. Rachel and Jack came in and met their nephew. Soon after Derek and Becca came in.
Spencer handed the baby to Derek.
"Lorelai and I have something we want to ask you two," Spencer said.
They both looked up.
"We would be honored if you would be our daughter's guide parents. Since neither of us are really religious but we do want people who we know will be their for her and help guide her we aren't doing 'god' parents so guide parents." Lorelai said
Becca smiled. "Yes. I would be honored."
Derek nodded. "Also, yes from me."
Lorelai and Spencer smiled, and they all hugged.
Eventually, JJ and Will came in and JJ took the baby.
"What's her name?" JJ asked
"Spencer and I wanted to honor some of the people who mean the most to us. Her first name is Hailey after the first woman who treated me like a daughter." Lorelai said
"And you being my best friend and basically my sister. Jennifer is her middle name." Spencer said
"Hailey Jennifer Reid," Lorelai said.
Jennifer teared up and had to sit down. "That. Oh. Wow. That is an amazing honor." She said
Lorelai smiled. "Considering all you have done for the both of us it was an easy decision."
Slowly everyone came in to meet the new member of this ever-growing family. Lorelai took a breath when everyone had been in to see the baby. She got up and moved around some when a nurse came in and insisted. She was a bit sore but knew it was necessary to get up and moving. Once she was back in bed. She looked over at Spencer who was holding their baby. She thought about everyone who had come in to see her and the baby. She felt so much love and she knew no matter what their little girl would have someone looking out for her, every day of her life.
