Martha remembers her first not guilty verdict like it was yesterday. She was defending a guy accused of flashing three women in a park. She was able to call the identification of the defendant into question, finding subtle differences between the three descriptions. It's enough for reasonable doubt, and the man is acquitted. Her victory is slightly tainted by her client following her into the ladies' toilet afterwards and exposing himself while she is washing her hands. She locks herself in a cubicle, trembling, and he's gone when she comes out.
"Are you going to report him?" Clive asks later, as they walk back to chambers.
"I can't report him, I'd just got him off."
"Unfortunate choice of words," says Clive, then laughs as Martha swats him.
Back at chambers, she tells Billy what happened. He is sympathetic, but stresses that it wouldn't reflect well on chambers if she had someone arrested immediately after defending him.
In that moment Martha realises that, however much Billy loves her, he'll always love chambers more.
