"It's called unconditional love," Billy tells Clive and Kate, after defending Martha following her abysmal performance in court today. To which Kate scoffs, "Where does love get you?" She's more concerned about losing the solicitor's work.
Where indeed? A couple of weeks ago Clive was on cloud nine, having finally got Martha Costello into bed. It hadn't happened the way he had expected it to, but it had exceeded his expectations.
Ever since that night in Nottingham, though, Martha has been giving him the cold shoulder. She's barely looked at him since, like she's ashamed of what happened. Today in court, just before he got her client sent down for drug smuggling, was the most she'd spoken to him since that night.
It hurts more than he's prepared to admit, even to himself. But he has other offers, he reminds himself, the new girl pupil looks very promising, and his silk application is looking good too.

With that in mind, he excuses himself from the party and goes to do a line of coke.
