A/N: Set in S01E04, with a couple of lines of dialogue from that episode.

In the pub, Martha looks nervous as Clive brings her an orange juice. "Sure you don't want something stronger?"

"I'm not drinking at the moment."

"Big case?"

"No. Well yes, several but…" Martha looks like she wants to add something but can't find the words. Clive feels a flicker of concern, distracting him from his own problems with Billy and chambers.

"Is something wrong?"

"Not exactly." Martha looks directly at him and says quickly, "I'm pregnant."

"Seriously?" Clive's eyes widen. He can't imagine Martha with a baby, didn't know it was something she wanted. Martha nods. He should feel flattered, really, that she's confiding in him, but then they tell each other most things, even when they've just been at each other's throats in a courtroom. "So, how long have you known?"

It takes him longer than it should to catch on, really. When the penny does drop his initial reaction is one of horror. He can't be a father. He starts rambling about a termination and how he just assumed that's what she would want until she stops him, tells him he's lost his charm.

Clive stares at her. Martha looks like she might be about to cry. He feels stricken.

"Martha—" he begins, reaching for her hand.

"It's fine," she says, snatching her hand away. "Like I said, I don't want anything from you, I just thought you should know." She's getting to her feet, not looking at him.

"Martha, wait. I'm sorry. I didn't mean…"

"Forget it, Clive." She finally looks at him. "I'll see you tomorrow."

Later he deliberately calls her from the chambers landline, thinking she might ignore his mobile but won't ignore what could be a work call. "Marth?" he says softly when she answers. He hears her breath catch.

"Hi," she says.

"Hi. Look, I'm sorry about before. I was just shocked. Can I come over and we can talk properly?"

She lets out her breath. "OK. I'll put the kettle on."

"I'll see you in five."

When he gets to her flat, she opens the door and smiles at him, looking tired. He steps into the flat and gives her a quick awkward hug before closing the door behind him.

"So," he says. "Nottingham."
