AN - I call this chapter, 'In the Name of Love'
"Are you okay?"
Arizona heard someone ask, as they pulled the duct tape from her hands. Arizona didn't say anything. She couldn't breathe. She felt like throwing up.
"Arizona! Are you okay?" she heard again. She slowly opened her eyes to see Callie hovering a few inches from her face. She felt so dizzy as she glanced to the side and saw the Irishman...or what was left of his head lying on the ground beside her. She immediately started screaming at the top of her lungs, while trying to wipe the blood from her body.
"Oh my God! Get it off me! GET IT OFF ME!" Arizona cried, kicking and pushing Callie away, still struggling to remove the blood. She looked over at the body again, which caused her to scream hysterically.
"Calm down baby, don't look at him, just look at me," Callie said, trying to turn Arizona's head away from the dead body. But Arizona kept pushing Callie's hands away. Callie finally grabbed Arizona tightly and lifted her up from the floor. "Ssh, baby. Calm down," she whispered.
Arizona was mumbling unintelligibly in Callie's ear, as Callie carried her out of the room. When they reached outside, she placed Arizona in the back seat of the black Sedan and closed the door. "Mark, can you help Aria with whatever she needs, and meet us at this hotel," Callie said, handing him the address. "I think we should drive back instead of fly, to give everyone a chance to...relax, before we get back to the city," she added.
Callie looked up briefly as at a distance, Aria made her way towards the two police vans that had just pulled up,…...probably her team. She hoped Aria wouldn't get into any trouble for carrying out this operation and could convince her peers that they were all on the right side of the law.
Mark nodded and glanced through the dark tinted window at Arizona's silent form. "Is she going to be okay?" he asked.
"I don't know," Callie answered honestly. "DeLuca, Alex, you guys come with us," Callie said as she hopped in the back seat with Arizona.
Carina received the keys for all of the rooms, and passed them out. Arizona quickly snatched the key from her and marched past everyone and straight into her and Callie's room, slamming the door behind her. Arizona hadn't said a word to anyone since she had been rescued.
They were at a highway inn that had individual cottage styled rooms, with a small gas station at walking distance. Though it was not a 7 star stay, the manager has promised them with good meals for the night as well as early morning breakfast.
"Hey Callie, want me to grab you a drink. I think you might need it," Carina said, looking at the shut door to Callie's room.
Callie exhaled and rubbed her temples. She looked at the drops of blood on her black denim jacket. She quickly removed it and gave it to Carina.
"No. And thank you for today. I might need you to step up if she shuts me out." Callie said as she pointed to the door Arizona had just slammed shut. If not her, Arizona should at least have the comfort of a friend at her corner.
Carina gave a small smile of acknowledgment as she turned and walked across the street to the closest gas station.
Callie went into their room and placed the other key card on the counter. She wasn't sure what to say to Arizona. She walked to the bathroom and leaned against the door frame, quietly observing her. Arizona was bending over the sink, washing her hair. It looked as though she were rinsing red dye from her blonde curls. Callie felt sick to her stomach at the sight before her.
She picked up a towel from the rack and tried to wipe the blood from Arizona's neck, but Arizona snatched it from her before she could touch her.
"Arizo—"
"Don't talk to me," Arizona snapped.
"It will be okay," Callie said.
Arizona raised her head up and glared at Callie.
With unhushed tears glistening in her eyes, Arizona looked down at the red water dripping from her hair, onto her light yellow dress, blending and turning into permanent blood stains. "With all due fucking respect Callie, it will NOT be okay! I'm washing blood and brains from my hair...it is NOT okay," she croaked out in short breaths.
Callie continued to stare at her.
"Will you please get out so I can take a shower?" Arizona asked, in a tone that was both cold and harsh.
Callie stood there a few seconds longer. She tried to take a step closer but Arizona raised up her hand, protesting any further moments with a silent warning. Callie looked down in defeat and then turned around and left the bathroom. She grabbed her keycard and walked out of the room.
Arizona quickly peeled the dress from her body. The bottom portion of her dress was still a light, soft yellow. But the top half was drenched in red. She placed it in the sink and got into the shower.
This all seemed like a nightmare. She just wanted to wake up from it. The only dead body she had ever seen was at her great Aunt Mary's funeral, who had died when she was a teenager, and even that had freaked her out. Now here she was washing some man's blood from her body. Blood that could have easily been hers, had one thing gone differently. To be alive, Arizona was eternally grateful, but her feelings were all mixed up at the moment. She just wanted to go home and forget about this whole frightening ordeal.
Arizona scrubbed and scrubbed until her skin felt raw and she became short of breath. She was so sick of crying, but she could no longer hold it in. She sat down in the shower as the warm water cascaded down on top of her, and she sobbed.
Callie leaned against the sedan. This whole day had been bittersweet. She was so unbelievably happy that Arizona had not been hurt. She didn't even want to think of her life without Arizona in it. But now Arizona didn't even want to talk to her. She knew Arizona had every right to be upset with her. She was pissed with herself that she had placed Arizona in this position and she didn't know how to make it better. But one thing she did know was that this had to be Amelia's doing. Who else could it be? It had to be Amelia Shepherd. But Callie also felt a nagging feeling that she was missing something. Something that's right in front of her but she was not seeing it. She tried to push that nagging feeling away. She had more pressing matters that needed immediate addressing.
Callie was thinking of what she was going to say to Arizona, when her phone started vibrating. She looked at the number. "Hey mama, I—yes, she's fine—no, I checked her, she's fine. At least physically anyway."
Callie sighed, "I know, I know, but it's been a rough day. I promise to call you tomorrow morning and give you an update. Love you and good night."
Mark and Aria pulled up right as Callie ended the conversation with Lucia. Mark walked away to the nearby gas station as Aria came to stand beside Callie's leaning form in front of the sedan.
"Carina has your key, she's in room 103. It's not much, but we needed a place that we could enter and exit from the outside," Callie said
"…and thank you for coming when I asked you to come" she added as she watched Aria pull out a cigarette and light it up.
"Would you have killed him if I hadn't agreed to join you?" Aria asked as she let out a puff of smoke through her nostrils.
"I don't know…"
"You have never killed anyone, Callie. Even when we wanted to take down Bobby's killers, it was me who did it. I get to do it because I'm a fucking police officer. Do you realise I would be arresting you right now if you had tried to kill that guy?" Aria asked as she moved to stand in front of her sister.
Callie looked down. No one knew this but it was true, even though the Torres Empire was standing on a lot of black money, none of it came from anyone's blood. Sure they have hurt people, but Callie had made sure that they draw a line. When she took her father's business further, she changed a lot of things about it, drugs and cold killing was something she never dabbled in. She briefly wondered what Arizona might think of her if she actually had anyone's blood on her hands. Arizona was too pure for the kind of life Callie had been leading — she at least understood that much.
Seeing her sister's silent form, Aria let out another puff of smoke, "you have to change the way you live hermana! I have been telling you this for years. You can't keep fucking with the law. Or one of these days I'm gonna turn up with handcuffs in my hand and not some protective vests…"
"And I have told you Aria. You need to stay out of my life! There's no way OUT of this life! Why do you think Dad could never get out? This life only comes with only an entry gate….. and anyways who do you think takes care of mom between the five of us? It's me. It's my money. It's this life!" Callie said as she crossed her arms. She and Aria used to be close but now it was like they were poles apart.
"There's always a way, Callie. Do it for Mom. I'm telling you Callie, this life took Dad away from us. It took Bobby away from us. And I'll be damned if we lose anyone else amongst us….but there's only so much I can do…." Aria added as she threw the cigarette butt on the ground and crushed it with her boot. She turned to walk away before she turned and looked at Callie's defeated form once again, "…or do it for her—do it for Arizona!", she said and then walked away.
Mark came back and went to stand beside Callie.
"You know I'm truly sorry for taking my eyes off her, even for a few minutes. This all happened because of me," Mark said, leaning his head back.
"No, it happened because of me. You're a true friend, Mark. And she's safe now, and that's all that matters."
Mark nodded, but remained silent.
"She's going to leave me," Callie stated, staring off into the distance.
"You don't know that. She's just in shock from everything that has happened," Mark said, trying to add words of comfort.
"No. She will, because I don't know how to make this better," Callie quietly said.
"Yes you do, Torres," Mark said, as he walked around to the trunk and removed some bottles of bleach and a small bag. He slammed the trunk shut and returned to stand in front of Callie. "It won't be easy, but I'm sure you'll figure out how to make this better," he said handing Callie the bag, "I picked this up for her on the way. Figured she would need it," he stated, then walked to Carina's room for his key.
Callie glanced inside the bag and then watched as her friend disappeared into one of the rooms. She stood there for a few more moments, before she walked towards her room.
Arizona was sitting on the bed when Callie entered. She was only wearing a small white towel wrapped around her body, and another wrapped around her hair.
Callie walked over and sat down beside her on the bed. What she wouldn't give to pull that towel off and hold her until they both fall asleep. She was sure that a good sleep can cure this somber mood. She handed Arizona the small bag.
Arizona reached into the bag and pulled out a white t-shirt and a pair of pajama pants. No bra or panties, but at this point, she didn't even care. She turned away from Callie and quickly put them on, knowing without any doubt that Callie's eyes were on her. When Arizona turned around, Callie stared at her shirt and gave a small chuckle.
Arizona glanced down at the t-shirt. It read: World's Best Mom!, in bright blue letters.
"Sorry, I think that's all Mark could find around here," Callie said. Had Arizona not been so upset, she might have been able to see the humor in it, but right now, she just couldn't. She sat back down on the bed to put her shoes on.
"Arizona," Callie said, reaching for her hand.
"Don't," Arizona said, pulling away as she stood up.
"Callie...I can't do this….. I may not live a glamorous life, but that's not me anyway. I don't know what I was thinking to even consider this lifestyle….," Arizona stated, no longer able to hold it in.
Callie felt a chill run up her spine. She took a deep breath and chastised herself for imagining the worse. Arizona is just shocked, she just needs to sleep it off. Calming her voice the best she can, she stepped closer to Arizona and reached out to hold her from her elbow, and said…
"Arizona, when we get back to the city, I promise, I'll find out who was behind this, and make sure it will never happen again. I didn't protect you as well as I should have and-"
"DO YOU SEE what I mean? Protect me?! If this was a normal relationship, you wouldn't have to. I want a normal life!" Arizona shouted as she snatched her hand away and took multiple steps backwards towards the middle of the room.
"I want a normal life Callie….A normal girlfriend or wife who has a normal job, so I can have a normal fam—just normal. I don't want this! My father robbed me of a normal childhood and I'll be GODDAMNED if I let you rob me of a normal life!" Arizona felt as though she was having a mini breakdown in some hotel in—she didn't even know where the fuck they were. This whole situation shouldn't have happened, and she started getting more angry with herself and the whole ordeal they were in.
Arizona pulled the towel from her head, letting her damp curls fall down her back.
"I know you are hurt, Arizona! But it kinda sucks for me too. I have been in hell ever since you went missing..."
"And who's fault is that?" Arizona countered
"I had a plan, Arizona. Plan to protect you. You shouldn't have left home without Mark. If you weren't there at that grocery store, none of this would have happened!" Callie said as she took a step closer
Arizona threw the towel wildly across the room as she matched Callie's stance, and spat out "I know how to take care of myself Callie. How about the fact that I was only distracted because I was staring at photos of YOU with a NAKED PENNY!"
"Wha—what?"
"I got a text, with dozens of photos of you and HER"!
Callie stood in silence for a minute and then quickly stepped into Arizona's personal space and held her arms, and dipped down to meet her eyes, "Arizona…please, please trust me when I say this that I have nothing to do with Penny. I was at the gym and she jumped me….and—and if you got some photos of that moment than that means that was sent to you to throw you off-guard….god—I swear I have nothing to do with that woman"
Arizona stepped back again, "See—this is what my life has become. Lies, deception, kidnapping, murders…I trust you when you say that you have nothing to do with Penny. But I don't trust my life with you..."
They stood in silence, facing each other. It could have been minutes, or hours, Callie just knew that it wasn't enough.
"Well, at least this time I was worth five hundred grand," Arizona mocked. But instantly she felt guilty for taking such a jab and the look of hurt in Callie's eyes stung her.
"Just push the knife further Arizona, as if I don't feel like shit. I know this is all my fault. I—I don't know what else to say other than I'm truly sorry I put you through this. When we get back, I swear I'll make things better. No one will be able to get to you again."
Arizona stared at Callie in disbelief. "So you'll keep me in hiding?"
"I don't know, I'm still trying to think everything through."
"Is that what you think I would want? Is that your definition of normal?" Arizona shook her head. "Callie...it's over."
"Don't say that. I can make this work, I—"
"I don't want to do this, Callie," Arizona whispered, tears finally spilling over the brim of her eyelids. "I can't do this. I would lose me if I stayed. This isn't just Tiffany's, this is far worse, and I can't handle this. I—I," Arizona couldn't finish. She had to leave. She felt like she was slowly being smothered. "I called Carina, and she has agreed to take me back home tonight itself. And don't be mad at her, I requested it. I realize things might not be safe….at the apartment, so I'll check into a hotel when I get back." Arizona tried to walk past Callie but Callie grabbed her hand.
"Please don't do this, Arizona. Don't leave me again," Callie whispered, close to her ear. She just couldn't take it this time. The first time Arizona left was because of what Callie did and said. This time...she was leaving because of who Callie was. And that was something that couldn't be changed.
"Please don do this to me Arizona. You fell in love with me knowing what I do…knowing the kind of life I lead. You don't get to walk away now that I have fallen so deeply for you…" Callie tried not to choke out, but every step that Arizona was taking away from her, was killing her.
"I don't want to love you anymore", Arizona said with a sense and tone of finality
Arizona looked into Callie's apologetic eyes. She would miss her. Her body, her heart...all of her would cry for Callie, but she just couldn't stay.
Arizona stood on her tiptoes and kissed her. She wrapped her hands around Callie's neck, and pressed her body against Callie's as she caressed her tongue with hers.
Callie wrapped her arms around Arizona's waist, as she kissed her back even harder. She had wanted to feel Arizona in her arms for over a week, and now she was in her arms. Maybe everything would be better after all. Especially if she could make Arizona feel what they both meant to each other. What would make both of them feel better. But before she could pull Arizona's pajama bottoms down, Arizona pulled away from her.
"Goodbye, Callie," Arizona whispered, as she backed up toward the door, still facing Callie.
Callie's heart sank...again. She wasn't sure what to say. Were any more words even needed? Arizona wanted normal, and that's something Callie wasn't. She started walking towards Arizona until Arizona held up her hand.
"No. Just stay away from me...please. When we get back to the city, just stay away," Arizona whispered.
Callie stopped in her tracks, her heart breaking with every step Arizona took closer to the door. As Arizona reached the door, Callie felt like she had to tell her again, even though she knew it wouldn't stop Arizona.
"I love you."
She watched as Arizona took her last step towards the door to step out of the room and quite possibly out of her life, forever. The second time around was ten times more painful than the first time Arizona had walked out on her.
Arizona's hand lingered on the doorknob. She had to tell Callie the truth before she walked out.
"Callie, the reason I went to that grocery store was because I wanted a kit. I was late and I wanted to confirm it…." Arizona took a deep breath to steady herself as she looked at Callie's confused face,
"In a normal life, I would have given you a t-shirt like this…" Arizona pointed at the silly t-shirt she was wearing, "…and told you that we are having a baby!"
Arizona watched as the colour drained from Callie's face; their life isn't a normal one. It can never be a normal one.
Arizona turned around and walked out. She had to do it, if not for herself, then at least for the tiny life growing inside her.
