After Martha's hasty departure from her hotel room, Clive gets up slowly and pulls on his clothes from last night. He scans the room before departing and notices that the nightgown Martha was wearing last night is on the floor, just under the bed. He picks it up and returns to his own room.

After a quick shower he packs his overnight suitcase, throwing Martha's nightgown in after a moment's hesitation. He can give it to her later.

After checking them both out at reception, he heads out to the car where Martha is in the driving seat. He's always liked Martha's sports car, it's her one extravagance. He throws his suitcase in the back before getting in next to her.

Martha seems determined not to acknowledge what happened last night. Clive can't understand why, it was a great night. There's a strange tension throughout the car journey, and he can feel her relief when they finally get back to chambers, where Billy is waiting to celebrate their victory in the unwinnable case.

Martha keeps her distance from Clive for the rest of the day. She's being polite, but strangely formal for someone who usually grabs hold of Clive's wrist to check the time on his watch and swigs from his wine glass before her own drink arrives. He finally gets her alone in their office at the end of the day.

"How about that celebratory dinner?" he asks.

Martha looks at him, startled. "That's not a good idea."

"Come on. There's a great place in—"

"Clive," she interrupts. "Look, last night was a one-off."

"Well, technically…" He smiles and raises an eyebrow, but she's not disarmed.

"I'm not saying it shouldn't have happened," she continues. "But I'm not looking for a repeat performance, alright?" Her voice is gentler than her words.

"I was only suggesting dinner."

"Good night, Clive." She leaves him standing there, swallowing his disappointment.

Kate comes in just as Martha is leaving. "Drink?" asks Clive, giving her his most winning smile.

Kate sees straight through him as usual. "Thanks for the offer. Was I your second choice, or your third?"

"OK, I'm going home." Clive picks up his suitcase and goes to order a cab.
