"Robbins, even if it's what we think it is. We still can't be 100% sure. And I say it's too risky for you to go out like that. Callie woul—"
"I'm going, Mark. End of discussion." Arizona replied with a tone of finality as she made her way outside, Mark hot on her tail. Arizona had the same assertiveness as Callie, and it made Mark flatter for a bit.
Mark walked at a faster pace to catch up with the charged up blonde. With those fitted black denim shirt & pants and knee high boots, Arizona was dressed with a purpose. And Mark was afraid that she was taking too much stress.
"Robbins, you just went through something horrible. You need to rest." Mark added as Arizona reached the car parked outside Mark's house.
"All I have been doing is rest, Mark. I have rested for more than a day and that's enough."
"You are still weak—"
"I lost my child. My fiancé is in jail. But I'm standing here, ready to put up a fight. I'm anything but weak, Mark." Arizona replied as she pulled open the car door.
"Mark, I need to speak with you now," Carina said as she made her way to Mark and Arizona who were about to hop into a car.
Mark glanced at her. Carina looked as though she had seen a ghost. "What?"
"In your car," Carina said, as she turned and walked to sit inside the car. She cursed herself again for even for a moment thinking about inserting herself between Arizona and Callie. She was who she was because of Callie, and Arizona looked up to her as a friend. And she needed to be a better person, if not for both of them, then for herself.
Mark glared at her, as if to say this better be important, and followed to sit inside the car. Arizona was already in the driver's seat, so Mark occupied the seat besides her.
Once they were all inside the car, Mark turned to face Carina in the backseat.
"I know who they have as a witness." Carina said immediately
"Who?"
"Penny."
Mark sat there staring at Carina. "How do you know?"
"I saw her a few minutes ago, leaving through the back way of the station and talking to that detective," Carina excitedly reported.
Mark nodded as he met Arizona's eyes who immediately fired up the vehicle. They were right in their assumption after all. And now they have the confirmation. "Thanks, Carina," he said, as Arizona pulled out.
Mark called Heather & Alex for back up and instructed them to meet them at Penny's apartment.
"Well Callie, looks like you really fucked up yesterday. Threatening to kill a detective just doing his duty? Why, what did I ever do to deserve that," Avery taunted, leaning against Callie's cell. And as always, Brukes was there with Callie.
"I don't know what you're talking about," Callie answered.
"Sure. Several guards heard you yell that you wanted to kill me."
"No they didn't."
Avery stared at Callie skeptically. "I never took you for a lying woman, Callie. Cold-hearted mob-boss? Yeah, but not a liar. They heard you, Torres."
"Yeah, they heard me threaten to kill someone, and it was my attorney. He's been falling down on the job, haven't you noticed," Callie dead-panned.
"Yep, and Callie already apologized to me for that and...I'm not pressing charges, just so you know. So, no harm done," Brukes smiled.
Avery quickly glanced back and forth between the two of them. Damn it, they were good! Fuck, he was hoping that threat would be the final nail in the coffin. Avery exhaled and walked away from Callie's cell.
Penny knew of the detective who had been giving Callie a hard time for years. She had also thought he was annoying, but when he called to tell her that Callie's new fiancé...oh, those words burned in her mind. New fiancé... Anyway, she and Callie were expecting, and if she snitched on Callie, and agreed to testify in an open court, then Avery could for sure put Callie away for a long time.
Revenge is definitely a sweet game.
Penny felt giddy as she made her way through the apartment. This jail time should be enough to send Arizona away, Penny thought, right as she tripped over something, and fell to the floor. She laughed at herself, until she noticed what she had tripped over was a black knee-high leather shoe. A woman's shoe...that was still connected to a woman's leg...and body. She followed the path up until she saw the stranger sitting on her couch in the dark. Only, it wasn't a stranger.
"Hello, Penny," the familiar voice said
"Arizona?" Penny said, still sitting on the floor as she rubbed her eyes, was she so drunk that she was seeing Arizona? In her apartment?
A splash of cold water hit her face and drenched her expensive blouse wet, as Penny tried to bring herself out of the drunken stupor. She felt herself being pulled off the floor and being deposited on the couch, as she saw Arizona and Mark towering over her next, both dressed in all black and both having their arms crossed.
"We know all about your fake snitching Blake and unlike Mark & Callie, I prefer skipping straight to the point. You will take your fake confession back and shove it where the sun doesn't shines" Arizona said as she placed her boot on the couch, beside Penny.
Penny tried to escape from the other side, but Mark's leg landed on the other side of the couch, trapping her between the two fuming blondes.
"I…I don't know what you are talking about.." Penny weakly supplied.
"Don't be coy Blake. You heard Robbins. We are not here to play 20 questions. Your fake testimony is the only thing keeping Callie in jail. It is only relevant because in the public's eye, you guys were in a relationship for a long time. You planned all this. You are lower than I thought you were." Mark spat
"You take your statement back and we will not file a counter case on you but if you try to play smart, even for a bit, I'll pull out every drug deal you have ever done and then we will see what an upstanding citizen you are" Arizona added as she pressed her leg harder on the couch, not caring if the expensive fabric got torned in the process.
Penny contemplated her next move. If details about her drug deals come out, she will be in jail forever. She was hoping her identity will be hidden in all this.
"If you don't agree RIGHT NOW. Then before we drag you to the police station, we will make sure your pretty face is trashed." Arizona spat out as she pointed a finger right at Penny's face, "Now he will not hurt a woman," she pointed her finger towards Mark, "but she will!" Arizona finished as she pointed the same finger to Carina, who came to stand beside her.
"Checkmate Penny!" Mark said
"No fucking way!" Avery screamed. This was not fucking happening. How could the bad triumph over good? Was there no justice in the world?! Was he the only sane person alive that knew Callie Torres was nothing but bad news?!
"Yep. Apparently Ms Blake...I mean, well, the ex-girlfriend...she will no longer testify and she says she was mistaken. She said her ex-girlfriend isn't involved in any type of underground crime. She was just a jealous ex-girlfriend," the Police Chief told him.
"But sir, can't you see someone got to her? Jesus, we're just going to let Callie Torres walkout? Just like that?!"
"Yeah we are, because the DA said there's no case and he has dropped the charges. There's not a single evidence against her. Callie Torres hasn't even got any ties with any suspect we know of, she is legit, so quit wasting valuable man hours on a dead-end case. You copy that?"
"But-"
"Jesus fucking Christ, Inspector Jackson! Give it a rest unless you plan on drowning yourself too."
Avery ignored the reference to Les Miserables. He could hardly think straight and wanted to throw up. He stared down at the ground. How had Callie managed to pull this? How did she know it was Penny? How...? That was all Avery could repeat over and over in his head.
Then he perked up for his last attempt at screwing Callie Torres over. "Could I still hold her on charges of resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer?"
The Police Chief turned to look at him. "Are you kidding? Get the hell out of my office and start working on people who are actually STILL in the underground crime circuit...you know, the bad guys." And with that, the Chief glanced back down at his desk, and shuffled through some papers.
Avery shook his head and walked out of his superior's office. He slowly walked over to his desk and stared down at years and years of files, paperwork and pictures of Callie Torres. That woman had finally won. Avery slung everything on top of his desk to the floor in a fit of rage. Damn that bitch!
Callie slid on her i-watch, and grabbed her wallet before she walked out of the jail. A place she never wanted to see the inside of again. Although she knew Brukes was the best at what he did, her freedom was because of Arizona & Mark.
As she made her way outside, she saw Arizona leaning against her SUV.
An all-too-familiar sorrow cloaked them as they silently absorbed each other's presence and as Arizona took purpose-driven strides towards her, Callie felt like the world was caving in on her.
Arizona felt elated and relaxed for the first time since Callie's arrest as she saw the love of her life walking towards her. As she went ahead to pull Callie into a hug, Callie took a step back.
"I—I'm covered in filth, Arizona" Callie added as she held up her hands, as if to maintain distance between them. Denial.
"I don't care.."
"I do. You must be still healing after—", Callie almost choked but restrained herself.
Arizona felt stunted. She could sense that Callie was shutting her out and it filled her with a deep sense of anguish. It was not like she was expecting Callie to comfort her after learning about their loss. But she at least hoped that they will get through this together.
It was an oppressive scene; the wistful silence palpable in the air as their gazes keep finding each other. Despite the surge of emotions coursing through them, neither spoke a word – not daring to ignite the combustible state of hurt that existed between them.
Callie saw Mark leaning against his car along with Alex, and made her way towards them. She walked over and hopped in the front passenger seat and directed Alex to join Arizona at her car for their ride back home.
"Good to have you back," Mark stated, as he pulled onto the street.
Callie turned to him. "Do I even want to know?"
Mark kept his eyes on the road. "Well, Penny had a change of heart. I guess being intimidated by Arizona Robbins would do that to you. You should have seen the look on her face. I think Penny thought because you're out of the business, that you've changed your ways—gone a little soft, and she wouldn't be in trouble for being disloyal. Well, I told her...that just because you were out of the biz, didn't mean I & Carina have too. I was kidding of course, but she hadn't had to know that. So, we said that this time we would be friendly and let her out if she promised to play nice. Next time...I told her I might be forgetful."
Callie faced the windshield. She tried to feel sorry for Penny...but she couldn't. Not one ounce of remorse. Penny was a vindictive bitch, and she was lucky that it had been Arizona and Mark who 'persuaded' her to play nice. The old Callie...maybe even the new Callie, would have dangled her ass upside down from a building until she got the message...and still, the thought of letting her drop eased her mind.
"And by the way," Mark said, in afterthought, "Detective Avery's car was blown up…..Crazy world we live in."
"When did this happen?" Callie asked.
"Oh, it hasn't happened yet. I'm psychic, didn't you know?" he smiled over at Callie.
Callie nodded. Karma was certainly a bitch.
As Callie angrily scrubbed out days worth of stress under the hot shower, her grief finally overtook her body and she sobbed. And as she sobbed, she reflected upon what had gone wrong. What had led to them losing their baby. Each tear stung like needles on her skin and seeped into her soul, intensifying her anguish and desolation. She felt almost desolate; each recollection of happy moments only accentuated her loneliness and emptiness. No matter how much she tried to rationalize it away, she could not escape the sense of loss that consumed her. Her resilience was waning and despair seemed an ever-looming inevitability. Anger.
When she got out of the shower, a fluffy robe covered around her body and another towel in hand drying her hair, she found Arizona standing in the middle of the bedroom, with her arms crossed around her midsection. She was still dressed in her stree clothes. Probably ready to dash out any moment.
When they had got back, Arizona had tried to talk to her but she had made a beeline for the shower, to avoid the 'said talk'. She needed to clear her mind before she could face Arizona. Frankly, she wanted a night off. But it seems like Arizona was in no mood of waiting. She was ready for Arizona to lash out any moment now. She knew it was coming. She had shut Arizona out, and Arizona's gonna react…..badly.
She had laid out the thorns, and now it was her turn to walk on them.
"Can I get a hug now?"
Callie's eyes widened. Because she was ready for the fight. She was expecting Arizona to be angry at her, for how she treated her outside the police station. She wasn't ready for a hug. She can't let Arizona touch her.
"No—No. I…I'm not feeling well—Just stand there—-" Callie panicked as she saw Arizona taking a slow single step towards her. Her own feets backtracked, taking multiple steps backward.
"You can sleep here. I'll just take the guest room…god JUST STAND THERE—" Callie shouted as Arizona took another step closer. Bargain
"I swear to god Arizona, I haven't slept in two days. I can't do this. Just…don't." Callie pleaded as Arizona took another step closer.
"Why? Why do you want me to stay away?" Arizona's voice was barely a whisper, she didn't want to spook Callie away.
Callie met the cerulean orbs before her. Of all the times she and Arizona had picked up a fight, and she had wished things could have gone differently, she wished the opposite now. She wished Arizona would just pick up a fight and leave her. Because as much as she knows she doesn't deserve Arizona. She was too weak to admit it aloud. She was too much of a coward. She doesn't even have the strength to console Arizona through one of her worst moments of her life. She was useless. Worthless. Depression
Her hands trembled at her side as she saw the determination in Arizona's eyes.
"Why?" Arizona whispered again
"Because you will touch me and I will fall apart." Callie said as she shook her head, a single tear rolling down her face, "….And right now, you should be with someone who will hold you together, not fall apart in your arms—"
That was all Callie could get out as she felt Arizona untying the knot on her robe and sliding her hands around her waist and pulling her into a bone-crushing hug.
Her hands trembled at her sides for a moment as she felt Arizona's cheek against her own shoulder. Skin on skin. Time stood still, as she stood stoically. Afraid to move. Unable to breathe.
After what felt like forever, she gave in. She hugged Arizona back with all her might, burying her face in the golden locks below her chin. Acceptance.
And then they wept. They embraced each other in solemn sorrow as they grieved the loss of their unborn child. As they wept together, memories of what could have been their future washed over them like a tidal wave, once again.
Arizona's heart broke for Callie. She had shed her tears, has found comfort in Lucia and her own mom's healing presence. And though nothing could fill the void she felt, it was still something. But Callie had nothing.,.she had no one. She must have felt so alone.
Though the pain seemed insurmountable, Arizona hugged Callie tighter with an undying love that shall conquer even the darkest hour. Or that's what she hoped for.
The next morning Arizona found Callie standing on the balcony. She was dressed in a gray hoodie and a black jogger set and her expression was as closed off as it was the night before. She had respected Callie's wish to stay alone last night and allowed the brunette to sleep in the guest room. But her patience was wearing thin now.
She slid her hands around Callie's waist and hugged her from behind. Trying to bury herself in that oh so familiar warmth.
"What are you thinking?" Arizona asked
"We lost our baby, Arizona," it was more of a statement, rather than an answer and Arizona nodded her head in response. Her head brushed lightly against Callie's shoulder.
Silence surrounded them as the only sound filtering through the early morning hour was that of the birds chirping away. Maybe there was hope for a new tomorrow after all, Arizona thought.
"You know…, Arizona started, still unsure of whether it was the right thing to say, "..we can…uh..we can try again after we wait for a while!"
Callie spun around, a look of disbelief marring her features. How—what? How could Arizona even think of something like that was beyond her.
"Are you kidding me? Do you think a new baby will replace what we lost?"
"That's not what I meant…" Arizona tried to reason
"That's exactly how it sounds!"
Arizona took a moment to compose herself. Maybe she shouldn't have said anything. At least not so soon. But she just wanted this situation to end.
"You know…I lost that baby…I did." she said, as a look of grief clouded Callie's eyes, "…it…it wasn't just your kid…it was my baby too. You are not the only one hurt here, dammit!" Arizona threw her arms in the air. It felt like they were moving in circles since yesterday.
"I know…I know that." Callie added softly as she held Arizona's hands.
Then silence. Arizona didn't know what to say next. She was at least trying.
"I think….I think this will keep on happening, Arizona." Callie held Arizona's hands tighter, her grip was solid and yet soft. "I thought this would end with Bobby…. Then I thought it would end with Dad. …And now it has cost me my child. There's no end to this, Arizona," she looked down, unable to meet the confused blue eyes in front of her.
"Callie…I—I want kids. I have told you several times I want kids. So, what now? You don't want kids all of a sudden?" Arizona was confused. Of all things she expected Callie to say, of how she envisioned this conversation would go, this was far from everything.
"It's not kids, Arizona. I'm talking about family. I can't have a family!" Callie all but blurted out, hoping if she said it faster, the pain would be bearable.
Arizona felt like she just got hit by train. Like there was a train with all her past misfortunes, past pain, past emotions that was running towards her at a berserk speed and now it has rammed into her. Slamming right at her chest. Knocking all the wind out of her body.
"I—-I uh—You—You are breaking up with me?" her mouth felt dry, like every word took extra effort to come out, choking her in the process. "…and now of all the time? When I went through something so horrible? Had to see you go to jail? Lost my child?" Arizona asked incredulously. She tried to snatch her hand away from Callie's grip but Callie's grip only grew tighter.
"Are you even listening to yourself, Arizona?" Callie replied softly, her eyes brimming with tears that were threatening to fall, "…you had to deal with a shooting, a kidnapping, an arrest and actually lose our baby! That's the kind of life I can give you. And you deserve better, Arizona." she said, as an unreadable look took over Arizona's face.
"I want so much for you, Arizona. So much more than this. You would be safer. You would be better off without me." Callie finished as she held Arizona's hand tightly for one last moment and then let go. She stood there for a while, memorising the pain on Arizona's face. A look that will remind her everyday that she was the reason Arizona's life was so, so miserable and keep her away from ever crossing paths with this woman.
I love you. Callie's heart said, as she walked away. Out of the balcony, out of the bedroom, out of the loft, and out of Arizona's life.
Arizona stood there in shock. And her shock only intensified as she looked at the hand that Callie was holding. Her engagement ring was no longer there.
Callie stumbled through the hallowed halls of her opulent mansion, swilling copious amounts of alcohol in a desperate attempt to obviate her heartbreak. She knew all too well that no amount of quaffing could erase the hurt, but she was resigned to drink until numbness ensued, knowing it would be easier than feeling the sea of pain associated with this agonizing parting. Distraught and disheveled, she stumbled from room to room, seeking solace from this gut wrenching grief that seemed determined to engulf her completely. But each room reminded her of Arizona. She never asked Arizona to move in and she had her reasonings but she and Arizona had christened every room here, Callie chuckled to herself drunkenly, and now she can't go to a single room without thinking about the blonde.
The look on Arizona's face was just so painful.
She finally settled herself at the bar of her en-suite ballroom. Inhaling deeply, she shakily poured another glass of wine as if it could fill the void left by Arizona. Even after numbing her senses and ignoring reality, Callie felt an ache that echoed through her very being, a reminder of what she had lost.
"YOU BROKE UP WITH HER" she heard Carina's voice echoing throughout the empty ballroom as the Italian made her way inside.
Callie looked at her. Carina was visibly fuming.
"Do you even know how lucky you are? To have someone like Arizona love you? And you are throwing it all away? For what? Because you are a coward…?"
"DeLuca—" Callie warned, she understood Carina's concern as Arizona's friend but now's not the time. She was barely holding herself together. She had already listened to an earful from her mom, Mark and even Lexie and Alex and she agreed with all of them. That she was a horrible person to break Arizona's heart. But she was breaking apart too and no one seemed to care.
"NO. You wanna fire me for yelling at you, you can but I'm not gonna listen to you," Carina said, her Italian accent coming out heavily with her anger.
"I wanted to be you. For so long I wanted to be like you. And when Arizona fell in love with you…right before my eyes…I wanted to be you more than ever. I wanted to be that person she loves…" Callie felt her stomach twisting at Carina's words, an unreasonable wave of jealousy coursing through her. She and Arizona ere no longer a couple and she had no right to be jealous, but her reasoning was muddled because of the alcohol.
"….She loves you. So much. That she fought through everything to be with you. She chose you. And you are throwing it away? I looked up to you Torres. You started from the bottom and grew to become a powerful name. And everyday, I wanted to be you…." Carina took few breaths to barrel her words, and then added,
"But I was wrong. You…you are a coward….You bail. She fights for you. But you bail.…And I don't want to be like you anymore. I don't wanna be a person who's so afraid to fight for her love…you…you are a coward "
There was a deafening silence after Carina finished. Both women were staring at each other's face.
Carina stomped her feet in utter annoyance at Callie's silence. She was expecting Callie to bite her back. But Callie looked….defeated. She turned to leave, and as she reached the ballroom door, she paused for a moment,
"Give yourself a chance Torres, she is worth it!" and with that Carina left.
Callie was drowning in her misery when Mark came rushing in, panic written all over his face. He was panting, unable to make a coherent sentence.
"It's Arizona…..We found her car trashed….And she's nowhere to be found." he panted out between breaths as he held the side of his stomach.
