A/N: Set in S02E01.

"I had an abortion, once," says CW, as she and Martha lean out the window of the silks' robing room, smoking. Martha looks at her. "I was young and in love, the father was married. We were both Catholic. He booked the termination for me, then dumped me when it was over. It was a late termination, and there was a problem. That's how I realised God doesn't exist, because no God could be that much of an arsehole."

Martha doesn't know whether to say she's sorry or not, so settles for looking sympathetic.

"Swimming in the ladies pond is safer," CW adds. "Don't worry, that's not an invitation."

Martha laughs, then decides to be honest herself, as CW has been. "I was pregnant. Last year. I was going to keep it and everything, but I lost it. Just before the silk results were announced. I went from being a mother one day to a QC the next."

CW nods. "And the father?"

"That's over. It never really started."

"Did you love him?"

Martha wonders what it is about this woman that makes her want to tell the truth. She must be great in court. "Yes."

"Is he still around?"

"In a manner of speaking."

"Then it's not too late." CW puts out her cigarette and gives Martha one final appraising look. "Don't forget, I'll be vicious to you in court. It's nothing personal."

"I won't take it personally."
