"That was in your pigeonhole."
Billy hands Martha a jiffy bag. Frowning, she unseals it and pulls out a familiar night garment, silky and white with black spots. She's immediately hit by a flashback of Clive taking it off her in a hotel room in Nottingham. Hurriedly she shoves the material back into the jiffy bag, but not before Billy sees. There's nothing written on the envelope, it wasn't posted to chambers, so it must be obvious to Billy that it was someone who works there who put it in Martha's pigeonhole. Damn you, Clive…
The last couple of weeks have been awkward, she's been avoiding Clive as much as possible. They seem to have reached an unspoken agreement not to talk about that night. No one else in chambers knows either, or she would have picked up on the gossip. This parcel is a stark reminder of what happened between them, though.
It's only later that night, when she realises that she's still late, checks her diary and does the maths, that she realises there might be an even more tangible reminder.
