Chapter 2
East Blue
"Three different types of devil fruits?" Zoro asked curiously as Luffy explained what he previously believed to be a myth.
"Yeah, Zoan which gives the user the abilities of the animal associated with that fruit, Paramecia which grants a wide variation of supernatural and fantastical abilities, and Logia widely considered to be the most powerful category which turns the user into an intangible form of an elemental substance and allows them to produce an infinite quantity of it." Luffy explained.
"Intangible? Is that how you were about to absorb those bullets back in Shell's town?"
"I didn't absorb them, they passed right through me. When I ate the Pika Pika no mi it turned me into a light human, so attacks phase right through me."
"And you can make an unlimited amount of those light beam explosions? Zoro asked stupefied as Luffy took out a map and compass from his barrel.
"Yeah, I can concentrate how much light I charge into the attack and make those explosions significantly more powerful" Luffy continued to map the course for the closest island, Orange Town.
"Are you a navigator as well?" Zoro questioned, his new Captain had been the one directing the course of their small boat since the start of their journey.
"Nah, I just spent all my time, when not focused on physical or devil fruit training, mastering the basics of the skills needed to survive on the seas. I know the basics of navigation, first aid, nutrition, and cooking. After all ignorance is never beneficial" Luffy explained putting the navigation tools back in the barrel and adjusting the course of their boat.
"Oh you're one of those geniuses aren't you?" Zoro teased.
"Shishishi sure I'm a super genius" Luffy played along.
"Luffy, is there a way to bypass the intangibility of Logia users?" Zoro asked after a moment of serious consideration.
"Hmm... The first way is with a material that nullifies the abilities of all devil fruit users regardless of category, its called sea prism stone."
"Nullifies?" Zoro asked.
"Hm, at the moment of contact it cuts off all the power of a devil fruit user as well as makes them feel physically weaker. Its as hard as diamond and expensive to purchase... if you come across it at all. Though I'm not sure what it looks like since I've only been told of its existence." Luffy admitted "The other method is to catch the logia user off guard or out speed them, that however only works if the logia user hasn't trained their ability to shift reflexively".
"Reflexively? They can become intangible based on reflex?" Zoro questioned.
"Well, should they spend years training specifically for that then yeah, though as I understand it that's not entirely common among logia users as they have a tendency to be arrogant in their abilities and will rely only on their own ability to perceive the attacks to shift into their intangible forms. So if you can attack without them being able to see the attack coming, know its coming or react in time then you can hit their solid forms " Luffy explain.
"I take it that you don't have that particular weakness" Zoro confirmed more than asked.
"Of course I spent 10 years training with my devil fruit, it would be pathetic if I didn't know how to change reflexively." Luffy answered with a smile. "The third method of hitting logias would be to find their elemental weakness. Fire and ice, or fire and wood for example".
"Wood? You know of a wood logia?" Zoro asked interested.
"Nah, I've never heard of one, just an example... but I suppose it could be possible" Luffy admitted. "The last method is just a guess from my part".
"A guess"? Zoro question attention fully on Luffy.
"Mhm... maybe I should say a hypothesis, largely because I have incomplete information on it. My grandpa was the one who is mostly responsible for the strength I have now as well as my devil fruit training. When we would spar he would always be able to hit him... even after I mastered being able to transform reflexively" Luffy said seriously.
"Maybe your grandpa was just faster than you think and you haven't yet fully mastered reflexive transformation." Zoro suggested.
Shaking his head Luffy continued "No its not that... my grandpa helped me train my fruit to the extent that I can transform even in my sleep. He simply has a way of touching the solid forms of logia users. I can still use my devil fruit just fine while he is touching me, so that also eliminates the possibility of him using sea stone while attacking. Also at times I would attack him with a barrage of lasers, and he was somehow able to dodge them, as if he was able to predict where the attacks would land."
"You mean like seeing the future"? Zoro asked somewhat incredulously.
"Maybe... something like that but I don't know if its quite to that extent".
"Did you ever ask him about his ability to hit you".
"Yeah, sometimes he would laugh and call it his 'fist of love'... though in his more serious moments he would promise to teach it to me when I eventually joined the marines".
"The Marines?"
"Yeah my grandpa is a vice admiral at marine HQ" Luffy revealed.
"Vice admiral!? I can imagine he's not too happy with your chosen path".
"He doesn't know that I left to be a pirate... I may have lead him to believe that I have been on the fence between choosing to be a pirate or Marine, and leading more to the Marine side." Luffy said somewhat ashamed.
"Oh why would you feel it was necessary to do that?"
"He's obsessed with me being in the marines, and to secure a certain quality of training from him I figured slight deception was necessary to fulfil the end of obtaining strength. I can only hope that he doesn't take it too hard or is able to forgive me when next we meet" Luffy murmured until he heard a faint noise coming from the direction of Orange town. Shifting his eyes in the direction of the noise Luffy could barely make out what looked like three human shaped dots in the distance.
Following Luffy's gaze Zoro asked "What's the matter Captain? Why are you staring at random dots?"
He can't make out that they're people, nor can he hear them. Regardless the fact that he can see anything from this distance at all is impressive. I suppose grandpa's training really was the better route to take. "Ah I heard a noise from that direction, it seems to be coming from those dots in the distance" Luffy pointed to the objects in the vast sea.
Out in the middle of the Ocean
"Ugh that witch she tricked us" "we need to find a vessel we're too far away to just swim back" "captain buggy is going to kill us if he finds out we got fooled by a teen girl"
Back with Luffy and Zoro
"What do you say we go check it out hm?" Luffy said grabbing the paddles
37 seconds later - stranded buggy pirates
"Man what are we going to do now" "we need to come up with a believable story"... "huh? what's that coming towards us?" The buggy pirates saw what looked like a dingy being jettisoned towards them. "HEY HELP US" "WE NEED HELP" "SLOW DOWN" they yell towards the object
"WE AREN'T STOPPING FOR YOU, GRAB ON IF YOU WANT A RIDE" a booming voice replied to their pleas. Desperately the three buggy pirates clung to the dingy for dear life as it zoomed by.
"Shishishi you guys really wanted to get rescued huh?" Luffy laughed at the now panting pirates after abruptly ceasing paddling, making it obvious that he was capable of being more accommodating all along.
*Huff* *Huff* "You bastards you almost killed us" "too bad for you this boat is ours now" "sorry you don't have a choice"
"Huh?" Zoro cut in annoyed
A short beating later
"Hehe our apologizes" "we didn't realized that this was the boat of Pirate Hunter Zoro and his friend" the three pirates apologized with lumps on their heads and swollen faces
"You idiots nearly attacked my Captain" Zoro said annoyed
"It's ok Zoro." Luffy turned to the pirates "So how did you fools end up in the middle of the ocean.
"Ah that witch? She tricked us..." the pirates launched into a explanation about how a orange hair girl played possum tricked them with fake treasure, stole their boat and treasure sailed away and sunk their shipped using a random sea storm.
"She could predict the weather?" Zoro asked
She must be quite a skilled navigator to accomplish such a feat, maybe even the best navigator on the seas, or a the very least has the potential to be "this orange haired girl, where did she go?" Luffy asked them
"She sailed in the direction of orange town" "hehehe she's doomed our captain buggy will deal with her" "after all he's the man that has the powers of the sea devil"
Captain Buggy? That's one of the East Blue big names, he had a bounty of 15 million beli if I'm not mistaken. Those men are a part of his crew huh... powers of the sea devil, a devil fruit then. "How unfortunate for you guys." Luffy said as he walked over to the men grabbed them by the collar and swiftly tossed them a great distance into the seas.
"What do you think captain? Wanna see what this girl is like" Zoro asked paddling them closer to the shore
"You read my mind Zoro" Luffy smiled "The orange haired girl in orange town, must be fate don't you think so Zoro?"
A little while later - streets of orange town
"Do you go everywhere with that backpack?"
"For now, until we get an actual ship for me to store the beli inside. Where should we start searching I wonder" Luffy wondered allowed
"Maybe start by going North, we just have to go up" Zoro suggested
"Did you just say going North means to go up?" Luffy asked incredulously
"Of course, North is always up" Zoro answered casually
"And where is South?" Luffy asked curious.
"Down of course" Zoro answer seriously.
He has no sense of direction Luffy thought with a sweat drop. "By the way Zoro, have you noticed that all the houses are empty and no one is around?" Luffy remarked as he and his first mate walked the streets of Shell's Town
"Maybe they are out partying... hopefully" Zoro muttered the last word
If this is Buggy's base... either he killed everyone, has them working for him, or kicked them off the island Luffy thought
Turning a corner a human sized projectile bounced off of Luffy and fell back hold on why didn't she phase right through him? Zoro wondered staring at the orange haired girl on the floor
Looking up the girl saw a towering well dressed man no he's a teen like me with a straw hat and black backpack that she just apparently bumped into, next to him was a shorter green hair man with three katana why does that description sound familiar? Seeing an opportunity the girl took it "Ah boss I'm so glad that your finally here, those guys chasing me wanted the map" she said in a hurry attempting to run away.
Grabbing her arm as she tried to moved past him, Luffy firmly held her in place. "Of course my cute little subordinate, now that I'm here you don't have to leave, I'll take care of these pests" Luffy slipped into the role thrust upon him. "Zoro make sure she feels safe yeah?" Luffy instructed
"Aye Captain" Zoro replied with a smirk standing beside the orange haired girl
Green hair, three swords, Zoro? This is pirate hunter Zoro. But why did he call that guy his captain. Did they team up or something? The girl question somewhat fearful of the two men's presence and her inability to leave, yet somewhat relieved due to the reputation of Zoro's strength.
"Oi did she call him her boss?" "That must be the one who sent her to steal the map" another trio of no name pirates charged at Luffy
Speeding forward Luffy grabbed one by the head and slammed it into the ground, another he delivered a left hook to the jaw sending the pirate into dreamland, the last had his chin broken courtesy of a well placed knee.
As expected Zoro thought with a smile
Did he just beat all of them in under a second? How did he move so fast? How is he so strong? I barely saw his movements. The girl now felt a bit more terrified, hoping she didn't piss this man off. I'll never be able to outrun him, and who knows how strong Zoro is.
Appearing in front of the girl Luffy spoke. "Now then miss we've been looking for you, my name is Monkey D. Luffy" Luffy gestured a handshake. Tentatively the girl took it and returned the shake "and this is my first mate Roronoa Zoro, but you seemed to have figured that out hmm?" Luffy introduced Zoro
He knew what I was thinking? Or did my body language give it away? "Y-Yeah my name is Nami, I'm a thief that steals from pirates" the know identified Nami cautiously replied
"A thief that steals from pirates huh? That sounds interesting I wonder what your motivation for that could be... Do you perhaps steal exclusively from pirates because their aren't many legal consequences or because a pirate in the past victimized you?" Luffy asked studying her expression "Ah I see, a combination of the two but more so 20/80... ah but their is something else I'm missing though isn't there..." Luffy said vastly impressing Zoro and scaring Nami.
So he really is one of those geniuses, he got all that information from one statement and studying her facial features, and based on how she looks now he's pretty close Zoro observed an interesting man indeed
He guessed my motivation in a flash, he's not just a brute, I have to be careful around them. Nami thought but refused to actually confirm his deduction. "You said you were searching for me but you didn't know my name, why?" Nami asked while thinking how she could get out of this situation
"Ah, well you see we were sailing to this little island here when we ran across three pirates that you tricked out of treasure and boat. They told us how you were able to apparently predict the weather and sink their vessel. You must be quite the navigator to pull off such as feat" Luffy complemented
"Of course I'm the best navigator in the East Blue" Nami bragged
"Is that so? Well how about you become my crew's navigator?" Luffy asked with a smile
Blushing a little at how handsome he looked Nami asked "Crew?" please don't be pirates
"Ah we're pirates, my aim is to be the pirate king" Luffy proclaimed
"I'm aiming to be the world's strongest swordsman" Zoro informed
"Pirate King? So you are pirates! I hate pirates, I like Mikans and Money not Pirates!" Nami shouted a bit flustered with twinge of disappointment. "But how did the Pirate Hunter Zoro end up becoming a pirate, much less the subordinate of a pirate" Nami asked after a moment
"HAHA he's an interesting man who can help me achieve my dream" Zoro answered with a smile and laugh
"So I take your response as a no then" Luffy asked staring into her eyes
"I have no desire to be scum that hurt innocent civilians, destroys towns and families." Nami answered defiantly.
"Ohhh... that's too bad because we're just going to kick Buggy the Clown's ass and take his treasure... But you can stay here." Luffy said turning around to walk away with Zoro following
"Wait!" Nami stopped them after they had gotten a few feet away "I won't join your crew... but we can be form a mutual partnership with a 50/50 split until its no longer advantageous to either party" Nami offered with her hand extended
Smiling Luffy shook the outstretched hand "Deal welcome aboard Nami"
"Oi I just said that I'm not a crew member!" Nami shouted eliciting a laugh from Zoro
Later - Orange town Buggy Pirates Headquarters
"Hahaha men celebrate flashily until those three idiots return with the map that Cat-burglar stole from us" a pirate wearing clown make-up and a red nose shouted
"Captain Buggy what about the other three who went out to sea" a random pirate asked
"Huh? When they get back we'll have to punish them for being away for so long that is unless they found treasure" Buggy announced.
"Oiii I'm looking a big red nosed excuse for a pirate named Buggy!" A deep voice shouted from below the headquarters
"Who's calling my nose big and red!?" Buggy shouted in rage looking down towards the origin of the voice
"Oi I know you aren't an idiot, why are you provoking him like that?" Nami asked worriedly
"Ohh there are quite a bit for us to cut down eh captain?" Zoro asked excitedly placing a hand on his Wado Ichimonji
"And why are you so riled up to fight!" Nami shouted at Zoro
"Relax Nami we're strong... though as equal partners I do expect you to take out at least a few for yourself... perhaps if you were a fully fledge crew member you would only be responsible for navigating, maybe in different reality." Luffy shrugged.
Gritting her teeth in annoyance Nami grumbled "If we survive this-"
"Oh its you Nami... have you come to return the map to the Grandline you stole from us?" Buggy asked looking down at the trio
"Ah you must be the best nosed weakling clown of a pirate known as Buggy" Luffy said pissing Buggy off
"Weakling!? I'll show you weakling. Men load the buggy ball in to canon, and aim for those three" Buggy ordered
Buggy ball? Is he stupid enough to name a regular canon ball after himself or is there more to it? "Ah Nami you may want to move out of the way" Luffy suggested
"Ahhh" Nami screamed jumping out of the way, seeing the cannon turn towards them
*BOOM!*
"Hahaha look at that, whose the weakling now?" Buggy laughed surveying the destruction cause my his custom made canon ball. An entire row of houses in Luffy's and Zoro's path were completely destroyed as a result of the explosion.
"Oi that was quite the explosion" Zoro said dusting himself off from being knocked down by the force
"Oh man that some impressive canon ball, do you have more of those?" Luffy's voice asked as the smoke cleared
T- th- they're is completely unscathed, Zoro barely got scratched up and Luffy doesn't even have dust on him. What is going on here? Nami asked herself observing their condition This is crazy they're complete monsters... At least with Zoro's reputation it makes sense, but this other guy, where has he been all this time
"Man you don't even have scratches on you, guess you really are invincible" Zoro whistled
"Invincible?" Nami asked from the sideline
The entirety of the Buggy pirates were completely speechless seeing the man from completely unscathed. "Did they just shrug off the Buggy ball" Buggy asked shocked
"Oi big nose I heard you ate a devil fruit is that right?" Luffy asked
"HAHAHA, that's right you disrespectful bastard I ate one and who knows what I can do" Buggy bragged hoping to bluff his way to victory
"I haven't seen the people of this town since we got here, what did you do with them?" Luffy asked
"Who those losers? The power of my devil fruit and Buggy balls scared them into seclusion somewhere" Buggy put on a face of boredom
"Ah so that means, all we have to do is kick your ass and the people will have their homes back then" Luffy said pointing at Buggy
"Kick who's ass!?" Buggy shouted in outrage "time for you disrespectful bastards to learn some manners. Men show them the full force of the Buggy pirates" Buggy order eliciting a war cry from his crew
"Finally some action, come at me" Zoro announced placing his Wado Ichimonji in his mouth while wielding the other two swords in either hand.
"This is crazy, we're massively outnumbered" Nami freaked out assembling a three segmented wooden Bo Staff
"It'll be good exercise" Luffy said speeding into the crowd smashing fist into pirate after pirate
Quickly it became evident to anyone watching the clash that the Buggy pirates were no match for Luffy and Zoro
"They're not very strong" Zoro complained as he lazily cut down buggy pirate after buggy pirate
"You two are monsters" Nami panted having knocked out one pirate and struggling to parry the blows of three of pirates.
"Die!" a random pirate screamed as he snuck up behind Nami with the intention of slashing her in the back with a cutlass.
Speeding over Luffy appeared next to the pirate slamming an elbow into his temple saving Nami
"Hm not bad so far, deal with the rest" Luffy sped away back into the crowd of pirates leaving a stunned Nami behind
"Since your so bored Zoro, why don't you give me a hand!?" Nami demanded
"Don't you dare Zoro... she can handle it herself" Luffy countered
Zoro? Wait the three swords, the green hair, the monstrous strength, it that Roronoa Zoro. Are they here to try and collect on my bounty? Buggy questioned
*Roaaarrr* A loud roar reverberated through the area sending chills down Nami spine
What is that? Another monster Nami panicked
"Huh what's with all the commotion out here. You idiots woke up Richie" A man appear wielding a black wipe, riding on the back of a lion three times the size of a normal one.
"Ahh commander Moji is here" "you idiots woke the beast" the buggy pirates celebrated
"Moji why can't you keep that unsightly beast quiet" Appeared another man this time riding a unicycle with a sword in his waist
"And commander Cabaji too" "with them and Captain Buggy we can't lose"
What a strange crew Nami thought to herself having finally beat the three pirates that were attacking her
"Hahaha this is it for you, you flashy bastards. Now you have the full forced of the Buggy pirates." Buggy announced with a laugh
"I take it you want to deal with the sword wielding unicycle freak Zoro" Luffy said
"You know me too well Captain" Zoro smirked in reply
"Zoro? Pirate Hunter Zoro? As the swordsman of the Buggy pirates I challenge you to a duel" Cabaji said
"Usually I don't waste my time at the circus, but seeing as your the only competition around, I accept" Zoro said as he and Cabaji launched at each other in a clash of swords
"Are you the first mate of the Buggy pirates?" Luffy asked Moji
"That's right I am Moji the beast tam-"
Interrupting the man's introduction Luffy sprinted forward faster than anyone there could see appearing in front of Moji. In the next movement Luffy kicked Moji in the head sending him crashing through one of the abandoned houses and into unconsciousness. Fluidly Luffy reared back a fist and brought it down on the giant lion underneath him, breaking its skull and shattering teeth.
"Eehhhhh!?" the Buggy pirates screamed in absolute disbelief
This is outrageous, he moves so fast no one can see, he just appears and people go flying... not even him... not even Arlong is that fast Nami looked on in shock
What are guys like this doing in the east blue? I came here to hide from the marines and escape this type of monstrous strength. At the very least I have an advantage, my devil fruit power, I can use it to catch him off guard Buggy schemed.
Zoro vs. Cabaji
Pausing during one there clashes both swordsmen attention was drawn to Luffy.
"Hn that's my captain, efficient" Zoro smirked
"That idiot Moji and his stupid pet got beat cause they were careless" Cabaji said but internally what was that? He just put both them down with one hit... Captain Buggy can handle him though... hopefully.
"I should follow the example of my Captain and not waste time. One charge and I'll show you difference in our levels of swordsman ship" Zoro proposed.
"Very well, Roronoa Zoro I have no time to play with you either" Cabaji agreed.
Zoro crossed the two no named katana across his chest while have Wado Ichimonji in his mouth "Come time for you to fall uni-clown" Zoro said running towards Cabiji
"Fine I'll use my real swordsmanship skills to finish you off" Cabaji announced cycling towards Zoro sword extended
As they reached each other-
"Oni Giri"
"Die"
-They exchanged attacks. An instance of silence passed until three slices opened up in a spray of blood across Cabaji's chest causing him to fall
"Hm circus clown act" Zoro scoffed
Zoro vs. Cabaji - winner Zoro
"That wasn't much of a duel" Zoro said somewhat disappointed
This is bad if they both gang up on me, I don't think I can win... if only I would convince them to fight individually Buggy thought in a panic
"Really? If you want you can take Buggy. Just remember he has some devil fruit ability he hasn't used yet" Luffy offered
"Ohh I think I'll take you up on that offer Captain" Zoro replied facing Buggy
This is perfect I can quickly take out the pirate hunter... fool doesn't know that I'm the worse match up for him in all of east blue. "You flashy bastard, just because you beat Cabaji doesn't mean you're ready for me" Buggy said wielding multiple knives between his fingers hoping to rile up Zoro
"Enough talk" Zoro said running at an impressive speed, cutting Buggy in two at the waist and severing his limbs
He's not as fast as Luffy but still incredible fast... at least you can kind of see him move Nami observed from the side
"Observe closely Nami" Luffy said suddenly beside her.
Looking down at Buggy's scattered form Zoro frowned. "That was anticlimactic" Turning around Zoro started to walk away
In the background the remaining Buggy pirates started to chuckle among themselves
"Zoro, have you ever cut someone down that they didn't bleed?" Luffy asked suggestively.
Just in time it seemed, as the subtle warning was enough to put Zoro on alert to swiftly turn around and block the delimbed knife wielding hand that was poised for him abdomen.
*Clank* Zoro's sword just barely parried the floating knife wielding hand of Buggy. "What the hell is that!?" Zoro shouted as he jumped away from the appendage
"Dahaha, I ate the Bara Bara no mi and became a splitting human. Slashing and cutting attacks have no effect on me" Buggy bragged
"Hm, must be a paramecia type" Luffy observed "Zoro do you mind mind?" Luffy said pointing a finger at Buggy
Immediately getting the message Zoro jumped back next to Luffy sheathing his swords, and creating a sizable distance between him and Buggy "Hm its fine, I figured your the type that doesn't like to waste time"
Why would Zoro retreat like that? He must really respect this man - Luffy Nami look on from behind Luffy
"Hahaha what's the matter Roronoa Zoro are you too sca-"
*Boom!*
A massive explosion cut off Buggy courtesy of a laser being launched from Luffy's extended finger
What- what was that, a bomb? A terrified Nami panicked in her mind. As the dust from the explosion clear Nami saw the charred body of Buggy the clown in a crater, bleeding profusely
"Captain Buggy!" the crew screamed from across the battlefield
"Ah almost forgot about you guys" Luffy said pointing in their direction and launched another laser.
*Booom!*
Another large explosion rocked the area, taking out the remainder of the Buggy pirates.
It was him, he can create large explosions on a whim? How? I've never- where does - what is he - this is completely outrageous. Nami's mind tried to comprehend what was going on. "How- how are you doing all this" Nami mumbled having fallen to her knees
Turning around Luffy was met with a completely distraught Nami. Seeing her he was reminded that to most people in the world his power was completely ridiculous, down right terrifying. All that without them not even knowing the depth of his devil fruit power. "When I ate the Pika Pika no mi it turned me into a light human, one of the things it allowed me to do is launch beams of light. As you can see even a low grade non charged beam is quite destructive." Luffy answered
"L-li-light human.." Nami remained on her knees terrified.
Deciding to step in Zoro said "its scary but you shouldn't worry... if there's one thing I learned from my time with this guy" Zoro said gesturing to Luffy "he's not some all consuming maniac bent of death and destruction, or even really conquering people either... it seems" Zoro tried to put his thoughts into words.
"Come one Zoro we should go see about their treasure" Luffy turned around either she'll accept this or not... its entirely up to her Luffy thought as he and Zoro walked into the Buggy pirates headquarters
Several minutes later
"Are you sure about this Captain?" Zoro asked as both he and Luffy came back out of the headquarters
"Yeah, though we're not going on a journey to play at being heroes, but we can still be decent people." Luffy responded, on his back, in addition to his black backpack, were two sacks filled with beli and treasure, same for Zoro. Yet on Zoro's sacks there was a note written on his.
To both of their surprise Nami had not move from the spot they left her "is she still in shock?" Zoro asked feeling somewhat bad for the orange haired girl.
Dropping off one sack in front of Nami Luffy said "Here this is your share" shaking her from her thoughts
Next to Luffy Zoro put both sacks down with the note on them, it read 'compensation for the destruction brought on by the Buggy pirates'. "What are you doing?" Nami asked Zoro having read the note
"Captain's orders, half of their treasure is supposed to go to this town to help them rebuild" Zoro informed her
"But why?" Nami asked. Not because she disagreed with the action but because her only experience with the monstrously strong was that they took advantage of others, especially the helpless.
