A/N: Set in S03E06.

Martha walks up to the front of the room, turning to look at all her colleagues. Clive looks at her appraisingly from where he's sitting next to Harriet. He know Martha is his main competition for head of chambers. Everyone knows about CW's drinking problem. He's made an impassioned case for switching to prosecution-only, but he's sure Martha's case for continuing to do defence work will be equally compelling.

"Who am I?" begins Martha. She looks at Clive, then at Billy. Then she lowers her eyes. Clive stares at her, competitiveness giving way to concern. He's never seen Martha look defeated before.

"I can't do this, I'm sorry." Martha walks back across the room, pushing past Clive. He turns to look at her, tempted to follow her as she walks out the door. Sean being found guilty has obviously hit her hard. He strengthens his resolve. Martha made her choice. This is his big chance, he's not going to blow it now.

"Well, it looks like we're down to two candidates," says Alan, sounding slightly strained. "Mr Reader and Miss Warwick." Harriet squeezes Clive's hand and smiles at him. He manages a smile in return. "Shall we proceed to a vote?"
