Previously - Nico POV
"Nico, what's this?" A voice behind me asked.
An angry Thalia had her arms crossed, waiting for an explanation. I could smell the burnt air!
I was fucked.
Could I jump in the lake?
Thalia POV
Cleveland, Ohio
After making sure Annabeth was in good hands with Lou Ellen, I walked out of the clearing. I had to clear my head of all the events that happened yesterday and today.
For some unknown reason, I had sex with a mortal called Mark multiple times. Why would I even do that? I was faithful to the hunt since that fated winter! Artemis kicked me out of the hunt and cursed me, making my only choice to join the quest. I didn't blame her, since I would have done the same. I just wanted to know how I had sex with Mark.
Apparently, Nico was here to "watch over" us. There had to be a lie there, since the gods never sent help during quests. Either Nico was in my type of situation, or something bigger was at play. In either case, I decided to spy on him.
I followed him to the lake where he was IMing a black girl in a purple shirt. The mist wasn't clear enough for me to see the gold letters, but there was a giant laurel on the shirt. My cousin was talking about siblings of Pluto, the Roman aspect of Hades.
That and the laurel confirmed the people Nico was talking to were Roman.
But why was Nico talking to them? And how did he know them?
Was Nico spying on us to report information to the Romans? That could be why he offered such a weak explanation to being here.
But, I couldn't jump to conclusions. I stepped out of the shadows.
"Nico, what's this?" I demanded, arms crossed, sparks bouncing off my fists.
Nico turned around, his already pale face blanching even more. Hm! Serves him right for this secret.
The girl had dark skin, a roundish face, with metallic gold eyes and puffy black hair. She seemed to be a year younger than Nico, give or take.
I was close enough to see the letters on her shirt: SPQR. Any doubts that she wasn't Roman quickly vanished. Her right arm had some tattoos, but wasn't close enough to see them. Three other people who had purple shirts were in the background, but I couldn't see their faces.
This had to be the Roman side of the quest!
Nico finally said, "Thalia, I can explain."
I looked back at him and threatened, "You better explain, di Angelo, or I'll electrocute you. Who's the girl?" I pointed to Hazel.
Nico stayed silent for a couple of seconds. "That's Hazel, and she is a child of Pluto."
"Your sister?"
"Half-sister, to be technical. But yes."
I stared him down to see if he was lying, but I figured I could ask more questions later.
I turned towards the IM and sized Hazel up. "She's Roman, is she not?"
"Yes?" Nico meekly replied.
Hazel, that smart girl, kept her mouth shut.
"Hi, I'm Thalia, daughter of Zeus," I sweetly introduced myself.
Hazel forced a smile. "And I'm Hazel Levesque, but Nico already told you that." The guy in question seemed like he wanted to seep into the shadows, literally!
I asked Hazel, "Who are the demigods on your quest?"
Hazel brightened up. "There's Reyna and-"
"Don't say anything!" Nico interrupted, looking very scared. "Thalia isn't supposed to know yet!"
I raised an eyebrow. What additional secrets was Nico hiding?
"What do you mean?" Hazel asked.
I held up a hand to stop her. "What am I not supposed to know, Nico? Tell me!"
I walked closer to him, towering over him. "Tell me, Nico! Tell me!" He wasn't going to tell me anything, but it didn't hurt to try.
I heard people come towards us as well as Hazel's quest mates from the commotion. Their faces were close enough to see, but the IM disappeared.
Fuck you, Iris!
Just had to do that at the worst of times.
A female robotic voice suddenly called out, "Please deposit another drachma for five more minutes of conversation."
It couldn't hurt to lose a drachma. Plus, I needed to see the other Romans. I took one out, but Nico shouted, "No! You can't, Thalia!"
I held the drachma over the mist threateningly. He had to tell me! "Oh, why not, Nico? Tell me! I will drop it in!"
Swish!
I heard rustling from behind the trees. Lou Ellen and Jake came out, weapons out, looking prepared for a fight. But why?
I felt a rush of air behind me. I turned around, Nico rushing towards me to take the drachma.
Oh no, you don't! I purposefully let go of anything in my hands.
The drachma fell into the mist, reestablishing the Iris-Message.
The image reappeared.
I saw Hazel, a Hispanic girl with a purple cape around her, another tall, blond boy with the same cape, and a scrawny, pale guy with a crazy face. The second guy looked familiar as fuck, but I couldn't place it.
The girl asked, "Is that who you were talking to?"
The tall guy said, "Hello, Greek demigods. We're the Roman side of the quest."
He had those blue eyes that were so familiar, but I couldn't see it! And what was that on his lip?
Nico suddenly swiped the message, ending it permanently.
Fuck you, Nico di Angelo! I was so close! How could you?
I pushed Nico to the ground, spiking his body with electricity. "What the Hades?! I was so close to figuring out who they were!"
"Calm down, Thalia," Jake soothingly said, locking my arms and restraining me.
Sorry in advance, Jake, but he was at the wrong place at the wrong time. I needed to hit and/or beat up something, and he was closest.
"No, I won't Jake!" I kicked him in the shins, making his grip falter, and subsequently elbowed his gut.
Jake fell down, wheezing.
I didn't have time to apologize before I rushed towards Nico.
Lou Ellen in front of him, clearly protecting the son of Hades.
"Lou, move the Hades out of the way!"
Lou glared back at me defiantly. "You are not going to hurt a fellow quest member."
My ears could only hear a rushing NO!
I pushed Lou Ellen to the ground, shocking her accidentally. Nobody was left.
Nico, already recovered, had his hands up. "Thalia, I won't try to fight you. But, please, calm down!"
My fists clenched, my eyes narrowing. I wanted answers NOW!
"Tell me who the tall guy was! Tell me!"
Nico backed away, looking more and more likely to shadow-travel away. "Thalia, I can't! I swore on the Styx to never tell you!"
My common sense would have allowed me to hear him out, but it was not in control.
Fury and Anger was.
I could hear the distant thunder, and my fists sparked with lightning. I laughed bitterly. "You'll regret it, Nico di Angelo."
"Thalia, I'm sorry," a voice behind me said.
I turned around and hissed at the person. "ξεκουράζω Θάλεια," Lou Ellen incanted, blue mist surrounding her body.
Rest Thalia, I translated. The light blue mist, the color of drowsiness, entered my body.
I dropped down.
"You'll find out soon," Nico said.
I had one last thought: "Fuck you..."
I fell asleep.
Hazel POV
Amtrak Train
"Tell me, Nico! Tell me!" Thalia, the daughter of Zeus, demanded. I would have defended Nico, but I had no idea what was going on.
The message disappeared.
Wait, how? Why did the message disappear? Iris-Messaging wasn't very reliable if the message disappeared.
Jason apparently heard the enraged comments from Thalia and came over to my seat. "Hazel, what's going on?"
A female robotic voice called out from the mist, "Please deposit another drachma for five more minutes of conversation."
The drachma was the currency of the Greeks, but we obviously didn't have any. We only had denarii and cash.
Reyna and Octavian also came to my seat to inspect the mist. I would have complained about the cramped feeling, but that didn't really matter.
The mist was weird. We couldn't get rid of it, but we could move stuff through it.
The lady in the mist seemed to only accept drachma, not cash. Definitely stuck in the past.
Not that I was one to talk. I was the definition of stuck in the past.
The message reopened. Nico and Thalia were there, but so was a tall, brown-haired demigod, and a pudgy, black-haired girl
The other Greek demigods!
Jason turned towards me and asked, "Is that who you were talking to, Hazel?" I nodded and he turned back.
Jason took the diplomatic approach and waved at them. "Hello, Greek demigods. We're the Roman side of the quest."
Nico rushed forward and swiped the message. Thalia's angry expression, the mist, and the message disappeared. Swiping really did get rid of those messages! But I still wanted to talk about my powers with Nico. He wanted me to use them, but they were cursed!
Of course, Octavian took this moment to cause a rift. "Ah, you see? Our ambassador closed off communication with us! Not only are the Greeks bad news, but he has definitely defected to their side!"
Reyna rolled her eyes. "Nico wouldn't do it willingly! He was arguing with another demigod and didn't want us to see it!" I shot back.
Jason was looking where the mist once was with a lost expression. I put a hand on his shoulder and asked, "What's wrong?"
He didn't reply at first, so we sat there awkwardly for fifteen seconds. "I think I know the angry girl. The one who had blue eyes. Do you know who she is?"
"Her name's Thalia, and she's a daughter of Jupiter- I mean Zeus. She was arguing with Nico about us. But that's all I know."
Jason smiled sadly. "That's okay. The name's familiar. I'll talk to her when we meet them."
"Passengers, we have arrived in Reno, Nevada - the Biggest Little City!" the intercom announced. "All passengers should leave now before continuing on to their final destination or to stay here. Thanks for riding Amtrak, and we hope to see you again."
"Let's go," Reyna ordered.
I got my stuff and followed Reyna out of the station. Jason and Octavian followed us until we got out.
A group of shady-looking ladies were eyeing us evilly outside. Once they started coming towards us, their hands out aggressively, I alerted Reyna.
She frowned. "Hazel, let's get away from them. I think they are monsters, but let's be be sure."
I nodded. Reyna alerted everyone to the possible threat, and we went out in the open where it was easier to fight.
The ladies knew that we knew who they were, and shifted into vampires. Eww.
I whispered to Jason, "What are those monsters?"
Reyna answered for him, "Empousa." I looked at her for an explanation, but she looked lost, like she was stuck in a memory.
Octavian said, "Empousa are charming, blood-sucking monsters who serve the goddess Trivia. But, it's not unusual for them to go against her."
Why would the empousa attack us? Trivia was on the gods' side. Anyways, I got my spatha out.
The leader of the empousa cackled, "Ah ha! There you are, half-bloods!"
"Wait, hold up," I said. Everybody looked at me weirdly. "Wouldn't you go against Trivia if you attack us?"
The empousa looked at each other and laughed, confusing me even more. The leader, who I'll call Lynn, finally responded, "You really believe we serve that deadbeat goddess?"
Lynn laughed again and advanced by a yard. "Serving Trivia was the epitome of our life, doing all kinds of missions she assigned to us." Lynn smiled wistfully. "Those were the glory days, where we could do anything. But then, the Christians repopulated!"
The empousa snarled. "The mortals stopped worshiping, and the gods lost power! There was so much blood now, but we couldn't drink it! Do you know why little girl? Why?" I backed up a bit, holding my sword out. Were empousa all this creepy?
"You're scared, aren't you? That makes your blood taste better! I'll finish the story for you, daughter of Pluto. Jupiter decreed that any servants of the gods were not to attack mortals or demigods so they wouldn't fear us and turn to the Christians. Trivia, that goddess of cowards, followed his orders!"
I was befuddled. Why wouldn't she follow the orders of the King of Olympus?
"Trivia was a strong goddess, a wild card in Olympian politics. In fact, Zeus would have made her an Olympian if she were not born a Titan!
Trivia was hit hard after the Christians came. Her powers weakened, and she could no longer defy Jupiter. She told us to stop attacking mortals and demigods. However, some of us decided to go against Trivia's orders and continued to attack mortals.
Jupiter was angry about their death and punished Trivia severely for it. Trivia was forced to release every Empousa from her service. Trivia rebelled against Jupiter, but she was weak and had almost no allies. No Olympian supported her. Trivia was exiled for a long time. 1500 years."
Jason asked, "How come none of us know about this? A rebellion when the gods lost worshipers seems like a big deal!"
Lynn snarled. "Oh shut up, son of that disgrace! You will face a slow, poisonous death for turning Trivia against us!"
"Yeah, yeah. Enough about the threats. Why don't we know about it?" Jason replied. Was he trying to get killed?
"Fine. Only the Olympians, some minor gods, and us empousa knew about this. It was a small rebellion, though one during a moment of crisis. That's why Trivia was only exiled, not even permanently. That's why she joined the other Titans a year ago.
While we were free from Trivia, we still respected her. During her exile, she was very close to fading, but got saved by mortals. They thought she was the very first witch, making her known and healthy again. Trivia learned her lesson and did not contact us in fear of Jupiter's punishments. We were angry, but we did understood her reasons.
But, our main food is blood. Mortal blood. Jupiter would surely have killed us if he saw us. For the gods not to notice our activities, we had to move to the frontier of the gods. The enemies of the gods lay there, so the gods didn't dare interfere. Not even Jupiter.
Many demigods attempted to vanquish the forces there, but none of them could. Once, when the gods were in France, the empousa occupied the Bran Castle in Transylvania."
My eyes widened again. "You're the actual vampires!"
Lynn grimaced. "We are empousa, not vampires. But yes. One demigod survived the Castle, and told the neighboring mortals creatures with our features live there. They interpreted us as vampires, but we are not vampires! After Trivia's exile ended, we left the frontier of the gods.
During the recent Titan War, the empousa sided with Trivia, and by extension the Titan Saturn. We thought we would win, with all our numbers, but we lost! And to add insult to injury, Trivia joined Jupiter after the war!" Lynn spat out.
"She betrayed us! Betrayed us for the one who exiled her for 1500 years! Left us to the wolves of Olympus. She's a back-stabbing goddess, one who deserves to rot in Tartarus. She lost all our respect to her after the war. You demigods better not be siding with her. And that's the story."
"So who's your patron?" asked Reyna. "You clearly haven't died to the wolves of Olympus, so who's protecting you?"
Lynn clasped and looked up in the sky, the other empousa following her example. "She's the greatest, you know. The best patron! She has foreseen that I will permanently rule my own empousa clan and we will eat as much mortal blood! Much better than Trivia or Jupiter."
Lynn's head snapped like she was decapitated, and she dissolved into golden dust.
What.
None of us knew did it, so who?
An empousa came forward and scattered the dust in a pattern. She muttered a few phrases before shouting, "We understand!" The same empousa smiled evilly. "Now, we can devour all of you! Your blood will taste godly. Especially yours, son of Jupiter."
Before any action took place, some empousa spoke up, "Oh, dears! Why are we fighting now! Wouldn't surrendering be such a better option? It would make us sooo happy. If you surrender, we could even go somewhere else for some quality time. I promise."
Never.
I resisted the urge to follow their orders and lay down my weapon. They were empousa, charmspeakers! I wouldn't surrender to monsters who ended the battle before it began. Such undignified, un-Roman tricks!
Reyna was struggling to resist the charmspeak, but she was fighting like I was. She put her hand on Jason's shoulder, who was almost succumbing to the charmspeak. Jason looked healthier, but the opposite happened to Reyna. Was it one of their powers?
Unfortunately, Octavian walked forward and dropped his spear. Falling to the charmspeak, he was out for the battle. Even though Octavian was terrible, three demigods against a dozen empousa is a harder fight.
Reyna shouted, "Charge!"
We all jumped into battle, our weapons out and ready.
I parried a blow from one empousa's knife, and responded with a stab in the leg. If those were even legs. What were they? I took my sword back, and the empousa howled. I easily parried each of its sloppy blows, and quickly disarmed it. I stabbed it in the shoulder and stabbed it again in the forehead when it fell down. It dissolved into golden dust.
Another empousa sneered and lunged at me unexpectedly. I sidestepped quickly, and kicked it on the side. That was close! The empousa stumbled but didn't fall down. I jumped forward and faked a stab at its arm. The empousa's blade went there to parry it, but I stabbed its chest instead. It screamed, waving its sharp, metal fingers to swat me away. I couldn't come close enough to avoid a slash from the sharp blades, and I couldn't wait in case another empousa attacked me.
Welcome to my impulsiveness. I threw my spatha at its head with my best accuracy. The sword surprisingly made contact with it, the empousa dissolving into golden dust. I didn't bother to think about what would have happened if I missed.
Air rushed behind me, so I turned around and moved to the right. Too late. The third empousa's dagger cut my left shoulder. My arm was burned unnaturally, not expected from a knife cut. I looked down, seeing the blood coming out of the wound having green tints. Why?
The empousa cackled. "A poison knife. You will pass out in the next minute! And you'll die in the next 10 without help. Normally, we don't since it makes your blood taste disgusting, but-"
"Got it. You won't be able to see me pass out, I promise."
I attacked the empousa, but I couldn't get inside her defenses. It was a good fighter, and I could feel my movements slowing down. I summoned a bar of metal to trip her, and it did the job. My vision was blurring, so I stabbed her in the knee, and impaled it on the eye. The empousa did manage to throw its poisoned dagger straight through my left arm before it disintegrated.
I fell down due to the poison and the dagger impaled on my arm. I was going to die, for sure. The others couldn't procure a cure for the poison in less than ten minutes, and the gods wouldn't seem inclined to help a child of Pluto. Not as if they helped in the first place.
An empousa came towards me, sensing me as the weakest prey. She wasn't wrong. I couldn't lift my arm, let alone defend myself. At least I would get a quick death.
Oh. Jason luckily struck the empousa with electricity, disintegrating it into dust. I muttered a thanks, at least I tried to. Jason lifted me gently, and I blacked out.
A foggy and dark cave surrounded me with three separate entrances. Thick wisps of grey and purple mist floated from each of them and coalesced into one figure in the center. A black dog rushed in from the left entrance to sit next to the figure.
The figure, a woman in her early 20s, patted her pet before looking at me. She was wearing a dark tunic flowing behind her. Her blond hair braided into two ponytail, and her skin was as pale as marble. She scanned me like I was an experiment. Why would someone do that? I wasn't very experimental.
The lady had a subtle, godly glow around her and she attracted the cave's mist. This goddess summoned me to her residence, if a cave was a home. But why?
I put my hand on my spatha, just in case. "Which goddess are you?"
The goddess laughed. "Hazel Levesque, not kneeling in front of goddesses can get you killed, but not from me. We gods do need you. And you are special to me."
The dog laugh-barked? A bark that was clearly a laugh. "But I will reveal myself to you. First, this is Hecuba, ancient queen of Troy. Say hello, Hecuba!" The dog barked.
The goddess reappeared, holding wooden torches with the brightest fire. The green fire was expelling the mist from the cave, revealing the goddess' features more clearly. Her tunic was navy blue and she had black eyes.
The deity smiled serenely, revealing her white teeth to me. "I am Trivia. The goddess of magic. And we have much to discuss if you are to live through today."
Here is the seventh chapter of Greek meets Roman!
Summary: Thalia and the others meet the Romans during Nico's IM. Lou Ellen put Thalia to sleep since she was fighting with Nico over Jason's identity. The Romans in Reno win a fight against their first monsters, but Hazel gets poisoned by empousa. Trivia summons Hazel to her cave to cure her of the poison.
Thalia's conspiracy thinking is due to her mistrust with others. She keeps coming up for weird explanations for things that are hidden from her because she doesn't want to face the truth she believes: people will leave her. Her mother gave up Jason, Luke betrayed her to Kronos, and Artemis rejected her. But Thalia deserves to have permanent friends.
Lynn's timeline: the Christians became dominant around 300 CE & that's when Trivia rebelled against Jupiter. The empousa did not leave the frontier of the gods until 1800 CE, after Trivia's 1500 year exile. That long exile is why Trivia joined the Titans. Witches and vampires were most common during that time period. 50 years later, the gods & the monsters moved to the US.
During Lynn the empousa's speech, I did not mean any offense to Christians. It was just part of the backstory. But Lynn's speech was the longest monologue I've ever written. Hopefully it wasn't too slow or blocky for you readers.
Advice for fanfic writers: the gods moved to the US just before the Civil War. They weren't here during the War of 1812 or the Revolutionary War. The gods still lived in UK/Europe. If you want to bring up previous conflicts than the Civil War, bring up the Napoleonic Wars or the Seven Years' War. Don't be US-centric.
Questions: How will Trivia cure Hazel? Why is Trivia helping Hazel live? How will the other Romans react to Hazel's poison? Does Jason know who Thalia is and vice-versa? What will happen when Thalia and Nico meet again? How bad will the confrontation be?
Have a great day and let's all Mystify!
