Welcome to Greek meets Roman! Sorry if this fanfic has mistakes. I will try to revise and edit as much as possible. Disclaimer: The characters and places that you know belong to Rick Riordan, everything else is mine.
Thank you so much for all the followers, favorites, and reviews!
Previously - Unknown POV
I took a deep breath. "The deity was the first lover of Zeus, and birthed and raised Athena in his head."
A deafening silence rang throughout the room. Zeus' and Athena's mouths were wide open, their eyebrows raised in disbelief.
"Metis," Athena whispered.
Hera POV
Mount Olympus
Metis.
My husband's first wife. The one he loved more. He claimed that he swallowed her to protect us, but Olympus knew he wanted her. Zeus loved Metis enough to have her inside him for eternity.
But could I be angry? Zeus didn't cheat on me; we weren't married yet. And their marriage would have been better than ours. Zeus never cheated on Metis. But I was not angry about our sub-par marriage
But my possessive side had thought that Metis had faded during that time Zeus' head. How could she have survived? Something must have happened. Especially if she was inside that cheater's mind.
"What do you mean, Metis?" Athena asked, her tone bordering in outrage.
"I said what I said," the titanness guest replied, unbothered. Like it was just the run of the mill that my husband's not-deceased wife was plotting against us. "Your mother is working with the enemy. And can you fault her for going against Zeus?"
"Watch your tone, titanness," my husband said from my left. "You are in my abode, so do not degrade me."
"I know that," Athena replied. "But how is she still alive?"
"What do you mean, still alive? She's immortal, a Titan! How do you think the five elder gods survived in Kronos? By Chaos-given luck?"
"No, no! She faded when I was brought into existence. I could feel her leave my side. She gave her power to raise me in Zeus' head, and surrendered her soul to throw me out into the world."
"Somehow, she survived your birth. But instead of asking the titanness, you should be asking the person who imprisoned Metis. He would know."
"Father?" Athena asked, her rage turned to him.
Zeus grumbled and shrunk back. I glared at him. "Well, I did feel a tiny bit of essence exit my head when Athena was born," he confessed. "But I didn't think much of it! I thought it was Athena's new power that was acting out."
"How could you not think of Metis escaping?" I shouted. How could I have married someone so incompetent? "The prophecy said that she would birth a son to dethrone you, and she has had millenia to do so! For all we know, she has made one thousand children ready to march!"
"I know, woman! Which is why Olympus' first mission will be to track her down and kill her and any of her sons. Happy?"
"Hold on, we are not killing my mother," Athena interjected. "You failed to do so back then, so do not embarrass yourself again. She has had millenia to dethrone you, but nothing has happened."
"No!" I shot back. "Not only was she prophesied to destroy us, but she has allied herself with the enemy. She has earned her end."
"Says who? A jealous wife who wants any woman affiliated with Zeus gone? Stop this insecurity!"
I stood up from my throne, second only in size to Zeus, summoning my golden lotus-tipped staff. The air around me electrified, smelling like burnt ashes. "What did you say?"
I was not jealous! How could I be jealous of a dead titanness, or soon to be?
Athena stood up and summoned her stupid brown spear, rising up to my challenge. Her robe transformed into bronze armor. She looked me dead in the eye and muttered, "I told you. A jealous bitch."
My ichor boiled. I saw and heard red. How dare she insult the queen of the gods? She was the jealous bitch! I screamed a deafening shout and pushed my staff out. A blast of godly power was thrown through my staff to Athena. But before that golden beam of vaporizing energy and heat could touch Athena, the beam changed direction and obliterated a marble column.
I looked around wildly at who did that. Who took away my deserved kill? Athena grinned and gathered a ball of her own energy in her hands to throw at me.
"Calm down!" the passive Hestia spoke up. "Metis has defected, so we should treat her no differently than we treat our other enemies. She was Zeus' first wife, and nothing will change that."
My blood was still boiling. My hands were still thrumming with silver power. "I don't care about her. But Athena called me a bitch, and she shall pay."
"Hera, get back on the throne," Zeus ordered, sitting back on his seat. "Athena, please don't call her a bitch. And Ares, stop infecting them with the lust of violence."
Ares grumbled and snapped his fingers. My face burned, the want to pummel Athena's face gone. Either I could stand up here, looking like a jealous and temperamental bitch of a wife, or I could go sit on my throne like a perfect obedient wife.
My embarrassment took over and I sat down. Like a slave following her master's orders. I crossed my arms and told Athena, "Respect your queen, or you shall have none." Sitting down, Athena laughed wildly. I got the last word in, not Athena, and definitely not Zeus!
"My suspicion is that Metis escaped Zeus' head and has been living in hiding, recovering from the imprisonment," the silent Titanness said. "She has been looking for Zeus' death, and the enemy provided that."
"Hold on, how do we know you're telling the truth?" Apollo asked. Ironic coming from the bastard god of the truth. "Metis has had thousands of years to birth a son to overthrow Zeus, and she hasn't. And now, she sided with the enemy? What about last year?"
"I do not know why she only did it now. I can only tell you the facts and the memories. My suspicion is that Zeus' head must have made Metis infertile. Last year's war was only with the men, not the women."
"Thank you, Mnemosyne," Zeus said sternly. "We will discuss how to deal with Metis. I hope you enjoyed your brief and exciting stay in Olympus."
"You are welcome. I expect a favor in return, about the other titannesses. By the Styx."
"Yes, yes," Zeus waved off. "I swear upon it by the river Styx. But only concerning the Titanic females."
"Thank you," Mnemosyne said. She bowed deeply, and flashed away from the throne room. I looked at the entrance, biting my lip. What did she want with the other Titannesses that required Zeus? Especially because a treaty of neutrality bound all of them.
Thalia POV
Louisville, Kentucky
I stepped off the Louisville Union Station and breathed in the smoky air. I needed a distraction. That blond Roman was driving me crazy. Why did I feel like I knew him? Like a distant memory. Or maybe it was just my nerves with Nico. Either way, I needed to let something out.
Crossing my arms, I looked at a brown, run-down building, the gray skies. The dying Midwest. Everyone was moving out of here, and the ones that stayed didn't care enough to maintain its splendor. And they wondered why everyone was leaving these decrepit towns.
But us demigods could do nothing about that. We had no role in everyone moving to the South, everyone abandoning the Gods' hearth. Maybe I should have been happy that there was more land for nature to take over, but I was not a Hunter anymore.
I looked away. I was angry that Artemis had kicked me out, but now I understood. I would have quit one way or another. I had only joined to avoid my sixteenth birthday, the years-long day that marked an adventure with the Hunters. Without the curse, strangely enough, today was my sixteenth birthday, marking this new adventure.
"Right," Percy said. "The next bus to St. Louis is in about two hours. I'm hungry for some food, so how about going to a diner?"
Everyone nodded, so we followed Percy. Well, I was walking a bit slower. I looked down at the gray sidewalks. I needed earbuds and music
"Hey Thalia, you good?" a voice asked me. I looked up and nodded absentmindedly to Lou. What use was it to open up from that simple question?
We silently walked together for the rest, which I liked, until we arrived at our place. Thak's Food Joint. Percy opened up the door, ringing the bell, and the waitress took our order.
I took a seat at a counter and looked out the window. To the trees and grasses out there. To the thrill of adventure and the smell of earthy victory. Nature, I dreamed of. A smile escaped my lips.
Lou shoved me against the window, who knows why. Before, I would have shocked someone who did that, but now I didn't have the energy to care. I just glared at her and glanced back at the road. Artemis had taken more than her blessing. My energy was gone as well.
The waitress arrived at our table and served our food. The smell was positively delicious and the food was no doubt scrumptious, but I couldn't feel myself eating. I picked up a fry, dipped it in ketchup, and ate it, all while staring into the evening air.
"Thalia, you should eat," said Lou, that insufferable little demigod. She passed me her half-eaten burger. I looked at her for assent, and she nodded. I took a bite and swallowed it down my throat. My stomach rumbling, I took another. Food wasn't that bad after all.
"Hello!" the waitress said, appearing from thin air. Or so it seemed. "So here's the bill, and a note that a customer wanted to give you guys. She didn't tell me who it was for, but I think I know who." She passed the note to Percy. Of course, the demigod all mortals had a crush on.
I crossed my arms and looked out the window. I was no longer hungry.
"Okay, so it says to speak this name out loud, but names have power," Percy said. "Do you know who this is?"
Annabeth took the paper and nodded, "Yep, so Atalanta's-"
I blinked. My eyes reopened to a brown wood cabin, like the ones associated with hunting. We were teleported by a god. The light was bright, and the air was crisp and like a forest. Beyond the windows, there were birds chirping in trees that surrounded the cabin.
Of course. I had to be teleported to the place that would remind me of the Hunt. Typical of the Fates. I looked away from nature, from the musky smell, to a portrait of a young woman. I wanted to cry, but why crying over the Hunt would be stupid. Weak. And I was not weak for having sex.
"-the representation of feminism in Ancient… Greece," Annabeth finished, pulling her knife out warily. "Oh my gods, guys, I'm so sorry! Why did I say her name?"
Percy put a hand on her shoulder, reassuring her. They got the love they wanted, but not me? And Annabeth's "mistake" wouldn't be punished, but mine got me banished from the Hunt. Just because I didn't want to decide Olympus' fate?
"A tad bit wrong, daughter of Athena." A young woman in a black pantsuit appeared, sitting in a plush, leather chair at the end of the cabin. She gave off the aura of a minor god / demigod. Like a goddess surviving only because age couldn't kill her. Like Artemis had blessed her. My eyes burned in fury.
"I remained unmarried throughout my life, and bested all the men who ever wanted my hand. Theseus, Meleager, Pollux, Peleus, you name it. Artemis sought me as her protege, but I was not interested in her hunt. But her respect was so strong that she gave me her blessing without any demands. I survived so long, killed all my adversaries, and here I am."
"Cool," Jake said slowly. "But why are we here? Another quest? There are definitely other demigods in Cleveland."
Atalanta grimaced. "It's been a hobby of mine to tame wild creatures including the Greek boars Erymanthia and Calydonius. But somehow Calydonius escaped this morning, and I would like him back soon. But I cannot rescue Calydonius without leaving Erymanthia. So some others must do it for me. Like a group of demigod questers passing over this quaint city."
"Oh yeah, when we went to Othrys, we met the Erymanthian boar," Percy popped in. "She transported us all the way to New Mexico!"
"Atalanta, I don't know why you would think we would help you, but it's not happening," I spit out. "Our bus to St. Louis is in two hours, and there isn't really incentive. How about you transport us back to that diner and find another demigod?"
The hunter turned her eyes on me carefully. Like a predator cornering its prey. "Oh, I think I heard something about you. About being under the protection of Artemis. But I don't sense her presence around you. Did you cheat with a mortal?"
My eyes widened, my shoulders rearing back. Why did she say it tauntingly? It wasn't a thing to be made fun of! And I was not ashamed of being with Mark! "So what? Get another demigod to get your boar!"
Atalanta chuckled and picked her nails. As if she was in full control of everything and everyone. "I have some sway with your former patron. A few nice words, and Artemis will surely take you back into her hunt. Not as the lieutenant, but as a hunter, perhaps. Is that incentive enough?"
A chance at nature again? To be with Artemis? In that infernal camp? "Atalanta, I never want to meet the Hunt again. How about you go fuck yourself and bring us back?" I retorted, my hands sparking with electricity.
Lou Ellen brought her arm up in a fist, closing my mouth. I tried to scream and shout at Atalanta, but my mouth wouldn't budge. The sound just flowed back into my ears. I glowered at Lou, but she shook her head in a placating way.
Fuck everyone. Fuck Lou, fuck Artemis, fuck Atalanta, fuck this quest. Why did I not go to camp? My eyes watered, and I sat down on a chair. Let them negotiate with my life.
Annabeth looked at me worriedly. I smiled and gestured for her to talk with the huntress bitch. My sister didn't need to concern herself about my problems. I looked into the graying sky.
"Atalanta, why would we do this? There is no incentive for us" Jake said.
"If entry into the most selective group on the Earth is not enough, I can still give you a ride to St. Louis free of charge on Erymanthia."
Silence.
"Fine, how about an unlimited credit card that lasts for seven days? But that's all I'm offering."
Percy whispered to Annabeth, the latter nodding. She looked to Jake and Lou for advice, and they shrugged. I smiled at their naivete. Those two were so new to the world, so new to questing. You just didn't accept a quest (Atalanta hadn't threatened death), even if that deity offered you a credit card.
"Tell us more," Annabeth said.
Atalanta clapped her hands. Another god pleased to take advantage of demigods. Typical. I would have guffawed, but my mouth was still closed. And I was too tired to strike Lou with lightning.
"Somehow the boar escaped, and I can sense that it is now in the Kentucky Derby. Which I founded as a way to judge others the same way I was judged in my footrace, but I digress. And I am worried that mortals will interpret the boar as a horse and die trying to tame it. It is running wild in the arena, and I don't want anybody to be harmed.
Including the boar. I want you to capture it, use your Hecate magic or whatever, and bring it back to me. Then you will receive a ride on Erymanthian and the credit card."
"You swear on the Styx?" Percy asked.
"I swear on the Styx on those conditions once Calydonius is returned alive." Thunder struck. "Do we have a deal, demigods?"
I was going to sit this out and let the others handle the boar. They didn't ask for my opinion, so they didn't get my help. Yes, that sounds right. I would just stay in the cramped cabin with the fake-huntress Atalanta
Annabeth looked at all of us, at my impassive, blank face that would otherwise express anger, and nodded. "Yes we do."
Another quest, woo-hoo. (That was sarcasm.)
So, here is my fifteenth chapter of Greek meets Roman!
Summary: Metis survived when Athena was freed from Zeus' head, causing tension between Athena and Hera. The titanness (Mnemosyne!) asks for a nefarious favor. The demigods arrive in Louisville and are summoned by the huntress Atalanta to capture a mythical boar. Too bad Thalia refuses to participate in it…
Athena was really born after she was raised. For some years, Metis raised Athena to be a warrior and educated inside Zeus' head. Once she decided Athena was ready, Metis hammered metal so loudly that Zeus' head had to be broken to free him of a headache. And Athena was born!
So Atalanta isn't a goddess, just a strong immortal with Artemis' blessing. So she can't force the questers to do her hunt, but she can and will be persuasive. But she has access to godly things due to her status with Artemis and her in general. Atalanta was just the best Ancient Greek heroine.
Thalia has some problems here… hope that won't interfere with her actions and the quest. But knowing her temper, she has to be knocked out so the Greeks will succeed (ex. Cleveland).
Why did Mnemosyne tell the Gods about Metis? How will Metis truly be dealt with? Is Hera just a goddess trapped in a marriage? Did Lou and Thalia just start a friendship? Will Thalia's temper get in the way of the quest? How will the heroes capture the boar without killing it?
Yep, so I will be doing shorter chapters now, around 3k words. I can write and edit it more efficiently, it is way easier to keep track, and it reads better. I do not want to scroll that long for one fanfic chapter, and that applies to my stories.
Have a great day and let's all Mystify!
