Episode 1

(Inside the console room of the Tardis, all is not well. The usual wheezing of the engines is erratic, the lights are flashing on and off, and the entire room is shacking back and forth. At the console, the Doctor, Princess, Ben, Polly and Jamie, are all holding on for dear life.)

POLLY: Princess!

JAMIE: What have you done?!

BEN: Doctor, do something!

DOCTOR: (Struggling) I'm trying to!

(The Doctor is struggling to operate the controls with everything going on around them.)

DOCTOR: Princess, will you–?

PRINCESS: I'm trying. It's this one, right?

DOCTOR: Yes.

(The Doctor is fighting with the controls while the Princess struggles to operate the few she can reach to aid him.)

JAMIE: We're not going to make it!

DOCTOR: Yes, we are. We're almost…

(As the Doctor, with all his might, pulls on a lever, the shaking room steadies. The erratic wheezing of the engines returns to its reliably rhythm.)

DOCTOR: (Relieved) There. There... I have it back in control again.

(As everyone sighs in relief, the Doctor wipes his brow with his handkerchief.)

BEN: Is that us down then?

PRINCESS: Can I try the scanner?

DOCTOR: If you like.

PRINCESS: I wasn't asking you, Doctor.

JAMIE: Well, who were you asking then, Princess?

PRINCESS: The Tardis, of course.

JAMIE: Wha– You mean this machine of yours can speak?

DOCTOR: Communicate would be a more appropriate word, Jamie. It doesn't vocalise words like we do.

PRINCESS: Thank you.

JAMIE: For what?

POLLY: She's talking to the ship, Jamie.

PRINCESS: That's right, Polly, you keep him straight.

(The Princess and Polly exchange smiles, as the Princess activates the scanner. As they all look up at the scanner, they see the surface of a barren planet getting closer.)

BEN: Here, look, we're coming in at a fair rate.

POLLY: Doctor, are we going to crash?

(The Doctor begins using the controls quickly.)

DOCTOR: No, no, we should be alright. And gently does it.

(The engines give one last loud series of wheezes, as the Tardis finishes materialising. The picture on the scanner is now still, the ship stationary on where it's landed.)

DOCTOR: There we are, see.

JAMIE: Oh, thank the Lord.

PRINCESS: (To console) Are you, all right?

(The steady hum from the Tardis fills the room as usual.)

PRINCESS: (To Doctor) What happened?

DOCTOR: I'm not sure. But it couldn't have been the ship. Everything was working perfectly, more or less. But there must have been a reason.

PRINCESS: She seems a little…dizzy almost. Although she should be fine in a few minutes.

POLLY: Princess, look, it is Mars. You've actually landed the Tardis where you wanted to.

PRINCESS: I have?!

(The Doctor and Princess look at the scanner again. But now the Princess is frowning, while the Doctor hides a cheeky grin behind his hand.)

BEN: Hey, wait a mo… This don't look like Mars to me.

POLLY: How would you know? You never seen it.

BEN: No, Duchess, but I have seen pictures of the moon's surface and that's what this looks like.

JAMIE: That's the moon?

POLLY: Doctor, is it the moon?

DOCTOR: Yes, it appears to be.

BEN: (Chuckling) Oh, well, you weren't too far out, were you, Princess? Only about two hundred million miles!

PRINCESS: Well, it could have been worse. (Growing distant) But we should move on…while we can.

(The Princess starts fiddling with the control, the Doctor watching her curiously, when–)

BEN: What?

POLLY: Now wait a minute, you don't expect to land us on the moon and let us fly off just like that, do you?

BEN: Yeah, at least let us have a look around.

JAMIE: That picture canna be the moon. The moon's way up in the sky.

(Ben and Polly head towards the doors leading outside.)

DOCTOR: Where do you think you're going?

BEN: You're not going to tell us there's no shore leave.

POLLY: The Tardis isn't out of control or anything is it?

DOCTOR: Oh no, no, no. It was just a bumpy landing, that's all. It's perfectly fine now.

BEN: Well, then we can go outside, can't we?

(The Doctor, unsure, looks to the Princess, who has stopped fiddling with the controls.)

POLLY: What is it?

PRINCESS: I…I just have a feeling, that's all.

BEN: Oh, not this again.

POLLY: What kind of feeling, Princess?

JAMIE: Here, is this her second sight again?

PRINCESS: I just feel it would be better if we move on.

BEN: Why, are we in danger?

PRINCESS: Well, no…

POLLY: Well, what is it then?

PRINCESS: I don't know, Polly, it's not all that clear. It's like a…phantom of something…

BEN: Come on, just half an hour. What trouble can we get into in that time?

POLLY: It is the moon after all, Princess, it's not like there's anyone else up here.

(The Princess looks to the Doctor, not sure what else to say. The Doctor, ponders for a moment, also unsure, before…)

DOCTOR: Oh, all right. But only half an hour.

BEN: Right.

POLLY: Super.

BEN: Open the doors then.

DOCTOR: Well, you can't go ashore like that! You need space suits. There's no atmosphere out there.

PRINCESS: We've got some somewhere, I think. Picked them up a while ago for such an occasion.

BEN: What remarkable foresight you have, Princess.

PRINCESS: Why thank you, Ben.

(The Princess leads Polly over to the door, leading further into the Tardis. Ben, however, goes to Jamie, who is still staring up at the scanner.)

JAMIE: We'll maybe meet the old man in the moon.

BEN: You won't meet nobody mate if you don't get some gear on.

JAMIE: Eh, what…? Oh aye.

(Ben and Jamie then follow Polly and the Princess into the corridors of the Tardis.)

(Later, on the moon's surface, the doors to the police box open. Jamie is the first to step out, wearing a full body suit with a glass bubble around his head and goggles over his eyes. Connected to the bubble is a hose, which connects to a small oxygen tank on the waist of the suit. Jamie is uncertain, but Ben hurries him out, also wearing the same suit. Behind them follows Polly and the Princess, also wearing the same suit, except the Princess has her hat on top of her bubble and is held in place by a string that goes around it. Last, the Doctor, in the same suit, exits, closing the door behind him. The five time travellers stand together looking around the surface.)

JAMIE: I don't think I like it.

PRINCESS: Do you want to go back inside?

JAMIE: (Embarrassed) No, no…

POLLY: Don't worry, Jamie, it's me and Ben's first time doing this too.

DOCTOR: You're quite safe, Jamie, I assure you.

BEN: So, where shall we go then.

DOCTOR: Let's try this way.

(The Doctor sets of with the group following him. That is until Polly stops, spotting a faint pulsating light from behind one of the ridges.)

POLLY: Look, over there.

(The time travellers stop to look, but the light has already disappeared.)

JAMIE: I don't see anything.

BEN: What did you see?

POLLY: Some sort of great glow in the sky.

BEN: It's probably your eyes getting used to the lunar light, aye, Doctor?

DOCTOR: Possibly.

JAMIE: Hey, it's not that phantom the Princess mentioned?

BEN: Oh, leave it, mate. Ghosts don't exist, and even if they did, why would there be one on the moon?

PRINCESS: Don't be so dismissive, Ben. Anyway, whatever it was, it's gone now.

POLLY: Doctor?

DOCTOR: Yes

POLLY: (Lifting her boot) What do we need these great clogs for?

DOCTOR: Try a little jump.

POLLY: All right.

(Polly jumps into the air and goes sailing through it due to the low gravity. The Princess, Ben and Jamie giggle excitedly as they watch Polly, who lands on her heavy boots safely.)

PRINCESS: Here I come!

(The Princess leaps through the air as if in slow motion before landing next to Polly, the two laughing. Ben and Jamie then both leap up and playful bump into each other before being sent off in opposite directions.)

DOCTOR: Careful! One tear in that space suit and you'll suffocate.

(But the others are having too much fun to care.)

POLLY: You never told me you'd taken ballet lessons, Ben!

BEN: Right, I'll have you for that.

PRINCESS: Have to catch us first!

(Polly and the Princess leap away, going some distance before touching back down at the base of a ridge.)

BEN: Look out, here I come.

(Ben and Jamie both jump after them. Ben lands nearby Polly and the Princess, but Jamie over does it and goes flying over the ridge and out of sight.)

POLLY: Where's he gone?

BEN: Over there. Come on, let's get after him.

DOCTOR: Wait, Ben! We don't know what's on the other side of that ridge. Let's climb up for a better look first.

BEN: Yeah, all right.

(Rather than jump up, the four time travellers bounce up to the top of the ridge, peering over to see huge lit up dome. Within the dome is some large device that's pointed towards the Earth, and from that the entire base branches out around it.)

BEN: Blimey!

POLLY: What on Earth?

PRINCESS: We're not on Earth, Polly, remember. I think you mean, what on moon.

POLLY: It doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, does it?

PRINCESS: No, I suppose not.

BEN: What is it, Doctor?

DOCTOR: I don't know. But it's a structure of some kind.

PRINCESS: So much for no one else being here.

(Polly shakes her head, before spotting something.)

POLLY: Hey, I can see Jamie. (Pointing) There he is.

(Looking, the time travellers see that Jamie is lying on the ground near the base, not moving. Before anyone can do anything though, the nearby door opens and two men, in similar suits to the time travellers, step outside.)

BEN: Hey, there's somebody coming out.

DOCTOR: Come on, let's go.

(As the time travellers proceed down the ridge towards the base, the two men pick Jamie up and take him inside, with the door closing behind them.)

POLLY: They've taken Jamie!

PRINCESS: Then I'm sure they'll take us too.

BEN: Can't imagine they get many visitors around here.

PRINCESS: Maybe one of us should nip back to the Tardis for some milk and sugar to bring over.

DOCTOR: Later perhaps, Princess.

(They reach the door to the base, but after feeling around, the Doctor can't find any controls. However, the door then opens on its own. Peering inside, the Doctor and Ben can't see anyone. They continue in cautiously, with the Princess and Polly following them, as the door closes behind them.)

(A short while later, the four time travellers are escorted into a control room, which is connected to the huge glass dome with the huge machine. The time travellers have removed their helmets – with the Princess having put on her top hat – but are otherwise still wearing their suits. Upon noticing them, Hobson, an older man with thinning hair, approaches them.)

HOBSON: Hello. Where did you lot spring from? Don't tell me the shuttle rocket's arrived already?

SAM: No, it hasn't. There was another one with them, sir. Bob's taken him along to the Medical unit. He's all right. He's just knocked himself out or something.

HOBSON: Oh no, if we haven't got enough troubles already. Have they been through the sterile room?

SAM: Yes, Hobby.

DOCTOR: We don't want to cause you any trouble. Just let us collect our young friend and we'll be off.

PRINCESS: This place isn't haunted, is it?

HOBSON: Haunted?

PRINCESS: Yes, you know, frequented by ghosts.

HOBSON: Of course not.

PRINCESS: I thought not. These modern places rarely are. But it does happen from time to time.

(Polly suddenly tries to walk past, but Hobson grabs her by the arm halting her.)

HOBSON: Hey, not so fast.

POLLY: Please, let me go and see Jamie.

(Benoit, a man with dark hair and a small scarf tied around his neck stands up from a nearby seat.)

BENOIT: (French accent) I will take you there, mademoiselle, if you come with me.

HOBSON: All right, young lady. You can carry on.

BENOIT: This way.

(Benoit leads Polly back out the control room and into the corridor.)

HOBSON: But I'd just like to have a word with you three. You could do with an extra bacteria check by the look of it.

DOCTOR: Bacteria check?

HOBSON: That's what I said.

BEN: Well, thanks.

PRINCESS: I promise you, our Tardis very sterile.

HOBSON: Tardis?

(The Princess goes to answer, but the Doctor raises his hand, cutting her off.)

DOCTOR: Our space craft.

NILS: (To Hobson) They're all here, sir. Any time you're ready.

HOBSON: Right. Well, we'll learn about your spacecraft a little later. Meanwhile, you'd better come along with me, meet my team and listen to what I have to say.

PRINCESS: Oh, goodie!

DOCTOR: Thank you very much.

(At that moment, Benoit returns without Polly and sits back down in his seat.)

HOBSON: Well, you know what this place is?

(The Doctor looks into the domed area with the machine.)

DOCTOR: Well, it looks like some sort of weather control centre? Ah, yes. And that's the thing with which you control the weather. That's the culprit, then!

BEN: Ay?

DOCTOR: That's what gave us such a bumpy landing.

PRINCESS: But why should that make the Tardis dizzy? Especially when we were in the vortex.

DOCTOR: Well, you were riding it a bit close to the edge, Princess. Close enough for that machine to pull us off course.

PRINCESS: Was I? Really?

(The Doctor nods.)

BEN: What is it then?

DOCTOR: Some sort of gravity device.

HOBSON: 'Some sort of gravity device?' You are from Earth, aren't you?

DOCTOR: We came from there, yes.

HOBSON: Well, where've you been for the past 20 years? Every school kid knows about the gravitron in there.

DOCTOR: Ah, yes! It must be about the year 2050, Ben.

HOBSON: We've got a proper Rip Van Winkle here.

(The men around the room laugh)

HOBSON: It's 2070, in case you'd like to know.

DOCTOR: There you are. I was only twenty years out.

(Ben rolls his eyes but grins all the same.)

HOBSON: Well, before we all forget what century we're in, I'd better tell you why I've called you here.

DOCTOR: Won't you introduce us first?

PRINCESS: Oh, yes, please. I'm the Princess.

HOBSON: Princess?!

PRINCESS: Yes, that's right. And this my good friend, Ben, say, 'hello,' Ben.

BEN: Hey.

HOBSON: Hold on, you're not the princess–?

PRINCESS: Of course, I am. (To Ben) Why do they never make as much fuss about your name?

BEN: It's a mystery.

DOCTOR: And I'm the Doctor.

HOBSON: Right… Well, Doctor…Princess…you'd better meet my lot. We're all scientists here, you see. No room for idle hands. Roger Benoit, beside you there, is my assistant. He takes over as Chief Scientist if anything happens to me. He's a physicist like me and Joe Benson there. Nils, our mad Dane, is an astronomer and mathematician as is Charlie here. Ralph, Jules and Franz are geologists. When they're not acting as cooks, looks-outs, general and, you know, handymen.

DOCTOR: And this is where you control the Earth's weather? I see.

BENOIT: The gravitron there controls the tides, the tides controls the weather. And from this console here we plot it all on that map. Simple, eh?

(Benoit points out a worldwide map above a plane of glass looking into another room. On the map are three circles which chart out where the gravitron is active. In the room beyond, known as the gravitron chamber, with only one door in and out, there is a main console, at which sits a man with a cap on his head.)

BEN: Oh, yeah, very simple. Wish we'd had all this back in 1966.

(Suddenly an alarm starts going off, as the man sat in gravitron chamber collapses onto his console. A commotion breaks out amongst the men in the room while the circles on the map begin drifting out of control.)

HOBSON: It's Jim! Quick, Franz, take over here.

(Three men race into the chamber, one taking the cap and putting it on, while the other two carry the man who's collapsed out of the room. As they do, the man with the cap sits down to man the controls of the gravitron. As he does, the alarms cut off.)

BENOIT: Indicator Five over the Pacific is starting to move.

BEN: What does that mean?

DOCTOR: Some form of change in the weather.

PRINCESS: We're not talking about a little shower of rain, are we?

HOBSON: No, we're not. Earth will be on to us any minute to find out what happened.

NILS: They're already calling.

CONTROL: (Through radio) International Space Control Headquarters Earth calling Weather Control Moon. Come in please.

NILS: (Into microphone) Moonport standing by.

(Hobson comes over to join Nils at the radio.)

HOBSON: (Into microphone) Hobson here.

CONTROL: What's happening up there? The hurricane you were guiding is now 45 degrees off course. It's threatening Hawaii.

HOBSON: One of my men was taken ill. We're operational again now.

CONTROL: The controller would like to know the cause of the illness.

(As the man who was in the gravitron chamber is carried out, the Doctor tries to get a look at him, before frowning in concern.)

HOBSON: Yes, so would we. We've now got three men down with this mystery virus in the past few hours, including the doctor.

PRINCESS: (To Doctor, quietly) You're sick?!

DOCTOR: (Quietly) I think they mean their doctor, Princess.

PRINCESS: Oh.

CONTROL: One moment please. Stand by for further instructions.

HOBSON: Just hang on another couple of minutes, lads. We'd better hear what the great Mister Rinberg has to say.

NILS: Hobby?

HOBSON: Yes.

NILS: There it is again. I'll play it back to you.

HOBSON: (From radio, playback) Yes, so would we. We've now got three men down with this mystery virus in the past few hours, including the Doctor.

CONTROL: (From radio, playback) One moment please. Stand by for further instructions.

NILS: Hear the big noise ratio on that re-run? We're being monitored again.

HOBSON: Monitored?

NILS: Someone, not too far away from the base, is listening to every word we say.

CONTROL: (From radio) Moonbase, Moonbase. Come in, Moonbase.

HOBSON: (Into microphone) Still standing by… Well?

CONTROL: Your instructions are to send blood samples back to Earth for investigation.

HOBSON: Well, when can we do that? The next shuttle rocket's not for another month.

CONTROL: Then they must be put on that rocket. In the meantime, the Moonbase is to be put in quarantine.

HOBSON: Quarantine? What if these men aren't fit enough to get back to work? I shall need replacements.

CONTROL: If you radio information about this virus, we'll do our best to identify it and suggest treatment.

HOBSON: I demand to speak to Rinberg.

CONTROL: The controller is busy. I'm sorry. Over and out.

(Radio cuts out.)

NILS: That whole conversion was monitored by someone or something.

HOBSON: Oh, never mind about that now. That Rinberg fellow just won't talk to you. How can we trace down this mystery illness with the doctor himself down with it?

DOCTOR: We'd better get out of these things and see how Jamie is. (To Hobson) Perhaps we could be of help in the sick bay now?

HOBSON: Anything you can do. Bob!

BOB: Yes, Mister Hobson?

HOBSON: Show them to the Medical unit, will you?

BOB: Yes, of course, sir. Will you come this way, please.

DOCTOR: Yes. Thank you.

(Bob leads the Doctor, Princess and Ben out of the control room and into the corridor.)

(In the sickbay, beds are placed next to one another, with the head of each facing the wall. On one bed is Jamie, a bandage on his forehead. He has a blanket over him as well as wires connected to his chest, which lead back to a machine sat next to his bed, with a monitor at the top of it. Around him stand the Doctor, Polly, Princess and Ben.)

POLLY: Is this how it goes, Doctor?

DOCTOR: Yes, that's right. Then this unit automatically controls the pulse, the temperature and the breathing.

POLLY: A sort of electronic doctor.

DOCTOR: Yes. Almost got striped trousers.

BEN: And it even gives him medicines too?

DOCTOR: Yes, it will do very nearly everything.

POLLY: (Sadly) It can't be nice to him.

PRINCESS: Then it's a good thing we're here, eh?

(Polly manages a smile. But it fades when she looks back to Jamie, who's still unconscious.)

POLLY: How do you think he is, Doctor?

DOCTOR: Oh, he's not too bad. He's a bit concussed and feverish, but he'll be all right with rest.

JAMIE: (Murmuring) The Piper… The McCrimmon Piper… Don't let him get me…!

PRINCESS: Piper? What piper?

POLLY: Some legend of his clan. As far as I can make out, this piper appears to a McCrimmon just before he dies.

PRINCESS: Well, has he seen it?

POLLY: You don't believe it, do you?

PRINCESS: That's only part of the point, Polly. Maybe it's real, maybe it's all in his head.

BEN: But if it's not real then what's the problem.

DOCTOR: Even if it's just a phantom, an image in his mind, it can still have an effect on his recovery.

POLLY: He keeps asking us to keep the piper away from him.

PRINCESS: Don't worry, Jamie. We won't let any nasty pipers near you. You're perfectly safe and among friends.

(Polly takes Jamie's hand and holds it.)

BEN: (Teasing) Well, carry on, nurse.

(Polly puts down Jamie's hand.)

POLLY: Well, at least I tried to help. With a ward full of sick men and no doctor, somebody's got to do something.

(Suddenly, one of the other patients in the room begins to groan. Hearing him, the time travellers look over before wondering over to his bed.)

POLLY: I wonder who this is?

(Polly goes to touch his forehead–)

DOCTOR: Don't get too near, Polly. Have a look on his chart.

POLLY: Yes, that's a good idea.

(Polly picks up the chart at the foot of the bed and reads it, along with Ben from over her shoulder.)

BEN: It's Doctor Evans.

DOCTOR: Oh, yes. The station doctor. He was the first one to get it.

POLLY: He looks one of the worst.

BEN: Makes sense, since he's had it the longest.

DOCTOR: There's something about this epidemic that I don't quite understand. It's not like a real disease at all. It's almost as if–

BEN: Not real? What more do you want?

DOCTOR: I don't know. But there are certain signs and symptoms which don't add up. Ben, I want you to go along to the control room and keep an eye on things.

BEN: Well, how?

DOCTOR: I don't know. Give a hand, do anything, but keep your eyes and ears open.

BEN: Right.

(Ben exits the sickbay.)

DOCTOR: There's something very wrong here. Very wrong indeed. Princess?

PRINCESS: Yes?

DOCTOR: Have you had any more premonitions?

PRINCESS: None so far.

POLLY: Hey, hold on. Before you mentioned a phantom. Well, do you think it could be this piper Jamie's talking about.

DOCTOR: It's possible. Perhaps what you foresaw was what Jamie said?

PRINCESS: Maybe…

POLLY: You don't sound convinced.

PRINCESS: That's because I'm not, Polly. Like you said, Doctor, there's something wrong here. I can feel it all around.

POLLY: Well, what should we do.

DOCTOR: Well, we'll try and help these people as best we can, and keep our eyes open.

POLLY: All right.

(The Doctor and Polly set to work checking over the sick men in the room.)

(A while later, the Princess is half asleep on a chair, in the corner of the room. Her top hat posed to fall off. The Doctor and Polly are looking over charts, quietly talking to one another, before Polly points out the Princess to the Doctor who chuckles. Polly then approaches the Princess.)

POLLY: (Gently) Princess…

(The Princess shoots up right, practically leaping up to her feet as her hat falls to the ground. She grabs onto Polly with one hand, while pointing to the door on the far side of the room with the other.)

PRINCESS: Polly…!

(The Princess looks around, confused for a moment, before she let's go of Polly.)

PRINCESS: Sorry… I–I thought…

DOCTOR: What is it, Princess, what did you see?

PRINCESS: I was here…but I wasn't.

POLLY: You sounded frightened.

PRINCESS: I was… I still am.

POLLY: Well, you're safe now, right, Doctor?

(The Doctor is frowning curiously, looking at a piece of silver paper he's holding in his hands.)

POLLY: Doctor?

(The Princess sees what the Doctor is holding.)

PRINCESS: What's that?

DOCTOR: I don't know. Do you?

(The Doctor hands the piece of silver to the Princess who stares at it.)

PRINCESS: It's…familiar.

DOCTOR: But you don't know why?

PRINCESS: No.

DOCTOR: I'm much the same.

(Suddenly the lights in the room dim, covering the room in shadows.)

POLLY: What's happened?

DOCTOR: Oh, it's nothing. It probably just a changeover in the time cycle.

(The Princess takes the chance to pick up her hat and put it back on her head.)

POLLY: What do you mean?

DOCTOR: Oh well, you see, it's rather interesting really. You see, on the moon they have a fortnight of days and a fortnight of nights.

POLLY: Well?

DOCTOR: Well, it's obvious, isn't it? They have to make their own day and night artificially up here, or it would upset their whole biological time clock.

POLLY: Their what?

PRINCESS: Well, how do you know when to go to sleep, Polly?

POLLY: When I get tired of course.

PRINCESS: And when do you get tired?

POLLY: At night. Oh, I see!

DOCTOR: Clever girl.

PRINCESS: It's just a little thing to help them maintain their sleep patterns.

DOCTOR: All part of a healthy living. Of course, along at the control centre it's probably broad daylight.

POLLY: So that they can see what they're doing.

PRINCESS: Now, you're getting it.

(Suddenly, Evans begins screaming.)

POLLY: Doctor, Evans!

(They quickly gather around Evans.)

EVANS: (Murmuring) The hand… No… Don't touch me… No…! The silver hand…!

(Evans gives one last weak scream, then falls silent.)

POLLY: Doctor, is he…?

DOCTOR: Yes, I'm afraid he is.

(The Doctor pulls the bedsheet up and over Evans face.)

DOCTOR: What did he mean by the silver hand?

PRINCESS: (Holding up the silver paper) And does it have anything to do with this?

(The Doctor takes the piece of silver from the Princess.)

DOCTOR: I'd better report this to Mister Hobson. You two, stay here.

(The Doctor hurries out of the room.)

POLLY: What are we going to do?

JAMIE: Wha…? Where…?

(Jamie is starting to wake up, one hand holding the spot that's covered by the bandage.)

PRINCESS: Looks like Jamie's waking up. Get him some water, will you, Polly.

POLLY: Of course.

(The Princess goes to Jamie, helping him sit up while Polly exits the room.)

PRINCESS: Take it easy, Jamie. That's it, nice and slowly.

JAMIE: Prin…Princess…?

PRINCESS: Yes, it's me. You're safe, you're in the sick– a hospital.

JAMIE: Hospital…

PRINCESS: You banged your head I'm afraid. But don't worry, you'll be back to yourself in no time.

(Polly returns with a glass of water. She goes round the other side of Jamie and helps him to drink from the glass. But Jamie tries to drink too much too quickly.)

POLLY: Gently, Jamie.

PRINCESS: You still need to rest.

(Suddenly Jamie's eyes widen in terror, staring at something behind Polly and the Princess. But before he can say anything he passes out, falling back against the bed.)

POLLY: Jamie?

(Polly sets aside the glass of water to see if she can rouse Jamie back. And while she does, the Princess looks back. She sees the door at the far side of the room open, the silhouette of something walking out.)

PRINCESS: Polly!

(Polly turns around, but doesn't see anything, as the Princess races across the room to the far side door. She looks out into the corridor, but there's nothing there.)

HOBSON: Is everything all right?

(The Princess looks back into the sickbay, seeing Hobson and the Doctor have entered the room.)

DOCTOR: Princess?

PRINCESS: The Phantom Piper…

DOCTOR: You saw it?

PRINCESS: Yes.

HOBSON: The phantom what?

DOCTOR: What about you, Polly, did you see it to?

POLLY: No, I didn't. I was tending to Jamie, then I heard the Princess shout, and by the time I looked there was nothing there.

PRINCESS: And there was no sign of it in the corridor either.

HOBSON: Sounds to me like your nerves are getting the better of you.

PRINCESS: It's not outside the realm of possibilities, I'll admit, but I know what I saw.

HOBSON: A phantom, that's what you said?

PRINCESS: Well, I only got a quick glance at it.

HOBSON: Oh, look, enough of this, where's Evans' body?

POLLY: (Pointing) Over there.

(They all gather around Evans' bed.)

HOBSON: All right, let's get it over.

(Hobson lifts the sheet…only to find that the bed is empty.)

HOBSON: Is this your idea of a particularly bad joke?

DOCTOR: This is no joke, believe me!

(Benoit comes rushing into the room.)

BENOIT: Mister Hobson, Mister Hobson, you are wanted! Another man's collapsed at the controls. The gravitron has swung off alignment again.

HOBSON: Come on!

(Benoit runs back out the room. Hobson goes to follow him but pauses at the door.)

HOBSON: (To time travellers) And you'd better find that doctor's body or out you all go, quarantine or no quarantine.

(Hobson then exits.)

POLLY: I don't understand, when could it have happened? We've been in here the whole time.

PRINCESS: No, you went out to get water remember.

POLLY: But you were in here.

PRINCESS: Yes, but I was focused on Jamie... Which would have given that phantom a chance to sneak in and grab the body.

POLLY: So there really is a phantom?!

DOCTOR: Let's not jump to conclusions. Now, look, I'm going to go and get Ben, I'll be back in a moment.

(The Doctor hurries out of the room.)

JAMIE: (Murmuring) Water… Water…

(Moving his arm, Jamie spills the water at his bedside.)

POLLY: Oh dear… I'll get some more.

PRINCESS: Thank you, Polly.

(Polly exits the room.)

JAMIE: Water…

PRINCESS: Yes, Polly's getting you some. Here, I'll help you.

(The Princess helps Jamie to sit up. Unaware that something has entered from the far side door. Something covered from head to toe in silver, that looks more like a machine than a man. Sticking out of its chest is a box shaped unit, from which wires seem to grow out off and connect to various parts of its body. Its head is more like a helmet, with circular black eye holes, and box shaped mouth. Handles come out of its ears and join up at the top of its head, connected by a light. Jamie is the first to spot this thing as it approaches them.)

JAMIE: It's you. The Phantom Piper!

(The Princess sees it now…only she recognises it.)

PRINCESS: It's not a phantom at all, Jamie. It's a Cyberman!

(The Cyberman, without a word, raises its arm towards the Princess. Before she can react, electricity shoots from its hand zapping the Princess. Her entire body goes ridged for a moment, before she then collapses on the floor.)

JAMIE: Princess!

(Jamie, too weak to do anything, can only stare up at the Cyberman, as it towers over both him and the Princess…)
