Episode 2

(Later on, the Princess slowly comes to. She is still in the sickbay, her top hat having fallen off, with the Doctor and Polly crouched down next to her. Hobson stands with them, Ben at his side, while Jamie is still in bed next to them.)

POLLY: Princess?

(The Doctor and Polly help the Princess sit up.)

DOCTOR: Are you, all right?

PRINCESS: (Rubs head) What…happened?

HOBSON: We came in here just now to find you on the floor and another body missing.

PRINCESS: Jamie?!

BEN: No, he's right here, Princess.

PRINCESS: Oh, thank goodness.

DOCTOR: Did you see what it was that took him?

(The Princess nods anxiously.)

PRINCESS: It was a Cyberman, Doctor.

DOCTOR: Cyberman?

HOBSON: Cyberman? What are you talking about?

(Jamie starts stirring on the bed.)

JAMIE: (Groaning) I'll not go with you!

(Ben holds Jamie down to stop him falling out the bed.)

BEN: All right, mate. You're safe now. Take it easy.

DOCTOR: Are you sure, Princess?

PRINCESS: Yes. It–It was different to how they were last time, but the design… It was definitely a Cyberman.

HOBSON: Forget the Cyberman part, what else do you remember?

PRINCESS: Well, the whole event involved the Cyberman, so if I forget that part, I'd forget the whole thing.

(Hobson groans.)

DOCTOR: Just, tell us what happened.

PRINCESS: Well, Jamie accidentally knocked over his water, so Polly went to get him some more. I then helped Jamie up, so he'd be able to drink. And then the Cyberman was there. It came up to us, zapped me, and the next thing I know, I'm waking up here.

HOBSON: So, something attacked you.

PRINCESS: Not something, a Cyberman.

BEN: But the Cybermen were all killed when Mondas blew up, weren't they?

HOBSON: Stop this Cyberman nonsense. There were Cybermen, every child knows that, but they were all destroyed ages ago.

DOCTOR: Or so we all thought.

HOBSON: That's enough. Now let's have a little calm thinking. A completely unknown disease has appeared in the base. People drop in their tracks, they develop this black pattern on their skin. Then some of the patients disappear, right? Well, they can't leave the base without wearing space suits, and there are no space suits missing, so where are they?

DOCTOR: I must say it does sound a little odd.

HOBSON: More than a little. Well, I do know one thing. A new disease starts, people disappear and then you turn up.

(Polly stands up.)

POLLY: And you think we did it.

BEN: Oh, come off it, we haven't done a thing.

HOBSON: That's as maybe. I don't know who you are, what you are or where you come from. But you can get off the moon now.

BEN: Yeah, well that suits me fine. The sooner the better.

(Ben goes to leave, at which the Doctor stands up.)

DOCTOR: No, Ben. We can't go yet.

BEN: Well, why not? They don't want us here.

DOCTOR: Because there is something evil here and we must stay.

HOBSON: Evil? Don't be daft.

DOCTOR: Evil is what I meant. There are some corners of the universe which have bred the most terrible things. Things which act against everything that we believe in. They must be fought. This disease, for instance. It isn't really a disease at all, but we can help you with it. You'll see. We'll find the cause for you.

HOBSON: Will you, indeed?

DOCTOR: Yes, certainly. I just need to examine a few things, that's all. It should be simple.

HOBSON: Well, I'm not sure. I'll tell you what I'll do. I'll give you just one Earth day cycle to find the cause.

BEN: Earth what?

PRINCESS: Twenty-four hours, Ben.

BEN: But that's no time at all.

HOBSON: It's all the time you're going to get. Then you get off the moon, complete with this bloke here.

POLLY: But you can't move him! He's very ill.

DOCTOR: We accept. Now tell me, you have pathological equipment here, yes?

HOBSON: Yes, Evans was working on an extensive research project. (Gesturing to a nearby alcove) It's all in here.

(The Doctor helps the Princess up to her feet, who grabs her top hat as she does. Hobson leads the time travellers over to the miniature lab crammed into the alcove complete with worktable, microscopes, beakers, shelves of chemicals and more.)

HOBSON: It's quite a small unit. We're not equipped to deal with a full-scale epidemic, you understand. Do you think you can manage?

DOCTOR: Yes, we'll be all right, thank you.

HOBSON: Right. Well, I'll leave you to it. But don't forget, twenty-four hours.

(Hobson then exits the sickbay, leaving the time travellers alone. The Doctor doesn't waste any time in putting together a tray of items, which he then takes over to the only remaining infected man in the sickbay, as the others follow him.)

BEN: What are you going to do, Doctor?

(The Doctor sets the tray down on the table next to the patient's bed.)

DOCTOR: We're going to start with this one. He's the only subject we have left who's infected, and if we're to learn anything about this disease, we'll have to use him to do so.

POLLY: Listen, are you really a medical doctor?

DOCTOR: Yes, I think I was once, Polly.

PRINCESS: Didn't you take a course?

(The Doctor, while chatting, uses a small surgical tool to scrape away some of the infected skin on the patient's hand.)

DOCTOR: Yes, I did. I took a degree once in…Glasgow. 1888, I think. Lister.

POLLY: And where were you, Princess?

PRINCESS: I was at the International Exhibition of Science, Art and Industry with Susan. Kelvingrove Park, if I'm not mistaken.

(The Doctor holds out a ball of cotton to the Princess.)

DOCTOR: Hold that for me, will you?

(The Princess takes a hold of the cotton. The Doctor then uses a clamp to tear of a bit of cotton from the ball, which he dabs over the back of the Patient's hand. Suddenly the patient's hand spasms, making Polly jump.)

DOCTOR: It's all right. He's quite unconscious.

(Finished, the Doctor puts everything back on the tray, before returning to the lab in the alcove, where he begins preparing a slide for the microscope.)

BEN: Well look, what can we do to help?

DOCTOR: I shall need to examine everything. Clothes, boots, food, towels, soap, everything. Will you get them for me, please?

POLLY: Have you any idea what it might be?

DOCTOR: No. Not an idea. But we'll find it out.

BEN: Hold, you gonna to be safe here on your own?

DOCTOR: Of course, I've got Jamie to look after me.

BEN: (Dryly) Ha ha.

POLLY: I'll stay here with the Doctor and Jamie then.

BEN: Right, and me and the Princess will get what you need.

PRINCESS: (Putting on her top hat) Sounds like a plan.

DOCTOR: Actually, Princess, can you leave the hat?

PRINCESS: Why?

DOCTOR: I just want to check it over. Being in close proximity to the Cyberman, it might have something on it.

(Unhappily, the Princess removes her top hat, handing it over to the Doctor.)

PRINCESS: Be gentle with it.

DOCTOR: Of course.

(Ben and a sad Princess then exit the sickbay.)

(Later on, the Princess enters the control room, wearing white gloves, and carrying a tray of specimens from around the base, as well as a pair of tongs. All the men are busy and working hard as the Princess walks around, searching for additional specimens. Hobson, Benoit and Nils are gathered around a computer terminal in the corner.)

HOBSON: Yes, they're at normal levels. Roger, finish checking here, will you? The answer may be in the control panel.

BENOIT: Okay. (To Nils) I'll sing out the binary conversion values, you check them on the read out, okay?

NILS: Right.

BENOIT: Right. Channel one.

NILS: Ya.

BENOIT: Eight.

NILS: Right.

(As Benoit works, the Princess uses the tongs to take a piece of fabric off the back of Benoit's shirt without him realising. She then places the sample in the tray with the rest.)

BENOIT: One.

NILS: Mm-hm.

BENOIT: Three.

NILS: Ya.

(The Princess has now started trying to take samples from Benoit's trousers without him noticing.)

BENOIT: Four.

NILS: Ya.

BENOIT: Six.

NILS: Right.

BENOIT: Eight.

NILS: Right.

BENOIT: Twelve.

NILS: Ya.

BENOIT: Right?

NILS: Right. All spot on.

BENOIT: Right.

(Benoit turns to walk away and almost trips over the Princess who he hadn't realised was there.)

Non?

(Benoit grumbles.)

BENOIT: (To Nils) Oh, come on. Let's get on with our work.

(Benoit storms off with Nils behind him. The Princess quickly drops the sample she got from Nils' trousers in the tray before snatching another off his shirt as he passes by. However, Nils notices and jumps, scowling at her before he then continues on.)

BENOIT: Now, where were we? Ah, yes, the fluid servo pressures. I reckon this is probably where the fault is.

NILS: Er, do you want them all or just the main tank readings?

BENOIT: The main will do.

(The Princess is now using a piece of cotton to swab the control consoles. Once she's down that, she drops it in her tray.)

NILS: Right. Header one, 45 pounds.

BENOIT: Yes.

NILS: Header two, 47

BENOIT: Yes.

NILS: Three, 42.

(The Princess is passing by Nils, when she pauses, looking at his boots. She then bends down, getting a closer look. She shakes her head before looking to Benoit's boots, but again doesn't like them. As Benoit and Nils continue, the Princess crawls about the room looking at people's boots.)

BENOIT: Yes.

NILS: Sine values equivalent.

BENOIT: They all fit. Nothing there.

NILS: It must be the potentiometer net, then.

BENOIT: Looks like it. Take us some time to do that. We'll need the digital voltmeter.

NILS: Right, I'll get it.

(The Princess has come to a pair of boots standing in front of here. She follows them up to Hobson who is standing over her glaring down.)

HOBSON: What the blazes are you doing?

PRINCESS: The Doctor sent me for specimens.

HOBSON: Specimens? Oh, yes. Well, get on with it.

PRINCESS: Understood.

(The Princess begins undoing Hobson's laces.)

HOBSON: Stop that!

PRINCESS: You said to get on with it!

HOBSON: What, you need my shoes?

PRINCESS: Just the one actually.

HOBSON: Fine!

(Hobson takes of his shoe and shoves it into the Princess' hands.)

HOBSON: Is that all?

PRINCESS: I think so.

HOBSON: Then get out!

(Hobson storms off. The Princess shrugs, before collecting her tray of samples and exiting the control room.)

(Returning to the sickbay, the Princess enters with her tray of samples and Hobson's boot in hand.)

PRINCESS: All right, I think I got everything–

(The Princess halts, finding a Cyberman in the room. Polly is on the floor, unconscious, and Jamie is the same on his bed. The Cyberman is stood over the last infected man.)

PRINCESS: Ah, so you've come for another one.

(The Cyberman raises its hand towards the Princess, but knowing what's about to come, the Princess ducks behind an empty bed as electricity flies over her head. The Princess waits a moment, before peering out from behind the bed, only to see the Cyberman trying to flee with the infected man. Taking the shoe, the Princess throws it at the Cyberman, but it bounces off like it's nothing. It does get the Cyberman's attention though, as it turns back around and unleashes another burst of electricity. Once again, the Princess ducks beneath the bed to avoid it. But when she looks up again, the Cyberman and the infected man have vanished. Cautiously, the Princess comes out of cover, before then rushing over to Polly.)

PRINCESS: Polly? Polly, can you hear me?

(Just then, the Doctor enters, as the Princess checks over Polly.)

DOCTOR: Princess? What's happened?! Is Polly all right?

PRINCESS: She got hit with the same thing as me, I think.

DOCTOR: You mean the Cyberman came back?!

PRINCESS: And took the infected man.

DOCTOR: When?

PRINCESS: Just now.

DOCTOR: But I didn't see it leave.

PRINCESS: (Pointing to the door on the far side of the room) It went out that way.

DOCTOR: Right, stay here with Polly.

(The Doctor hurries over to the far door and checks outside, before returning.)

DOCTOR: No trace of it.

PRINCESS: Just like last time. (Remembering) I got your samples.

DOCTOR: Thank you.

PRINCESS: (Pointing to boot) I threw one at the Cyberman though.

DOCTOR: Ah.

(The Doctor picks up the boot.)

DOCTOR: Well, I'm sure it'll still serve some use.

(Polly comes to, groaning as she holds her head.)

POLLY: Oh…what happened?

PRINCESS: The Cyberman knocked you unconscious.

DOCTOR: How are you feeling?

POLLY: Room's spinning… (Remembering) The Cyberman!

PRINCESS: It's gone now, it's okay.

POLLY: And Jamie?

PRINCESS: It left him. It took the other infected man.

DOCTOR: Yes. That's all of them kidnapped now. But why?

(Ben enters with a tray of samples.)

BEN: What's going on here?

PRINCESS: The Cyberman came back.

POLLY: And he took another patient.

BEN: Well, is everyone all right?

POLLY: Yes, it only knocked me out. (Rubs head) I feel fine, more or less.

DOCTOR: Ben, go along and inform, Mr Hobson.

BEN: Right.

PRINCESS: You might want to wait until you've examined the samples. He didn't seem in a good mood and they're all pretty harassed at the moment.

DOCTOR: Hmm. You have a point. Very well, let's get to work. Ben, bring me over the samples will you.

(A while later, the Doctor is staring into a microscope. The Princess has just been pouring chemicals into a beaker, but when nothing happens, she puts down the beaker.)

PRINCESS: Am I doing this right, Doctor?

DOCTOR: (Without looking) Yes.

PRINCESS: Well, the liquid's clear. And according to you, that means it's fine. No trace of contamination or alteration.

(The Princess pulls of her white gloves and tucks them into her jacket pocket.)

POLLY: Are you having any luck, Doctor?

(The Doctor stands up.)

DOCTOR: No. Nothing. Absolutely nothing.

POLLY: Isn't there any clue at all?

DOCTOR: No. It's a complete blank. All the tests are negative. As far as I can see this whole ridiculous place is completely sterile.

PRINCESS: Mr Hobson won't like that.

POLLY: Ben's already on his way to tell him about the missing patient.

DOCTOR: He's not going to like that either. I simply don't understand it.

POLLY: Doctor, it wouldn't…I mean it couldn't possibly have anything to do with Lister, could it?

DOCTOR: Lister?

PRINCESS: You think he's behind this?

POLLY: No, not that. (To Doctor) It's just…you did say that you took your degree in Glasgow in 1888. It does seem an awful long time from now, 2070, or whatever it is.

DOCTOR: Polly, are you suggesting that I'm not competent to carry out these tests?

POLLY: Oh, no. No, no, no, no. I was just wondering if there was anything that Joseph Lister didn't know in 1888 that might possibly help you now.

DOCTOR: Well, the principles are the same.

PRINCESS: And he's picked up a few things from between then and now. And even after now.

DOCTOR: Shh! Somebody's coming.

PRINCESS: It'll be Mr Hobson.

DOCTOR: Out for blood I imagine.

PRINCESS: Yes, ours.

DOCTOR Look busy. Quick!

(The Doctor runs back to his microscope, while Polly grabs a clipboard, pretending to take notes and the Princess pretends to sort through the samples. Just then, Hobson enters – wearing two boots again – with Ben and some of his men.)

HOBSON: (To Ben) That's as might be, but that's the third person to disappear in the past few hours. It's completely illogical. Single beds, no way to get out.

DOCTOR: Do you mind?!

HOBSON: What?

DOCTOR: Would you mind standing away from the door and allowing it to close? The slides, the dust.

HOBSON: Okay. (To Doctor) It must be you people. We've got some straight talking to do, you and I.

DOCTOR: Princess?

PRINCESS: Yes?

DOCTOR: The boot now please.

PRINCESS: Right.

(The Princess goes to get the boot for the Doctor.)

HOBSON: Do you hear me?

DOCTOR: This is extraordinary. Are you getting this, Polly?

POLLY: (Pretending to write) Yes, all here.

(The Princess returns with the boot.)

PRINCESS: Here you are.

DOCTOR: Thank you.

HOBSON: Now look here.

DOCTOR: Excuse me, please.

(The Doctor grabs a different lens from a shelf before returning to the microscope and attaching it.)

DOCTOR: We are trying to help you, you know.

HOBSON: Help? Is that what you call it?

PRINCESS: We could call it, 'Assistance,' if you prefer.

HOBSON: You can call it what you like, either way you can all get off the moon now.

POLLY: Now, wait a minute, you said–

HOBSON: I don't care what I said.

DOCTOR: Ah!

(Hobson leans over the microscope.)

HOBSON: You found something?

DOCTOR: I think perhaps I have…

HOBSON: Really?

DOCTOR: Yes, I may be onto something, but…I must have some room! How can I work under these conditions? Now out, please! Come along, outside. I'm trying to work in here!

(The Doctor ushers Hobson and his men out of the sickbay.)

DOCTOR: Ben, see that they stay outside.

(Ben follows Hobson and the others out as the door closes behind him.)

POLLY: Doctor, did you mean that?

DOCTOR: What?

POLLY: You've found something?

DOCTOR: Oh, Polly, I only wish I had. Why not make some coffee to keep them all happy while I think of something?

POLLY: All right.

PRINCESS: No sugar.

POLLY: No sugar, Princess.

PRINCESS: Oh, no, I'll have some sugar, please, Polly.

POLLY: All…All right.

(A confused Polly walks off to get the coffee.)

PRINCESS: Can I have my hat back now, then?

DOCTOR: Yes, yes.

(The Princess gleefully goes to collect her top hat, while the Doctor stares after her in deep thought.)

(A while later, the Doctor and Princess exit the sickbay, the Princess now wearing her top hat. Outside the room, Hobson and several of his men are sat around waiting with Ben. Upon seeing them, the Doctor tries to rush back inside, but it's too late.)

HOBSON: Here, Doctor. You've completed your examination?

DOCTOR: Yes, just about.

HOBSON: Turned the base upside down, poked into everything?

DOCTOR: Yes, clothes, boots, food.

HOBSON: And you've found?

DOCTOR: Absolutely nothing.

HOBSON: Just as I thought.

DOCTOR: Oh, thank you.

HOBSON: So what I told you still stands.

(Polly enters the room carrying a tray with cups of coffee.)

DOCTOR: Ah, coffee. Splendid. Thank you, Polly. I think we could all do with a cup.

PRINCESS: Here, let me help, Polly.

POLLY: Thank you.

(Polly and the Princess set about preparing the cups of coffee for everyone.)

HOBSON: Benoit, you'd better go outside and see how Jules and Franz are getting on.

BENOIT: Right.

(Benoit leaves.)

PRINCESS: Right, who wants sugar?

(One man raises his hand.)

PRINCESS: That's one. (Adds sugar to one cup) Here you are.

(The Princess hands him the cup and he happily drinks it.)

PRINCESS: Anyone else? No. I'll just help myself then.

(The Princess adds sugar to her cup, while Polly passes around the remaining cups to everyone else, keeping one for herself.)

HOBSON: Thank you. Well, Doctor, as I was saying, you've had your chance and you've come up with absolutely nothing. Now I want–

(Suddenly one of the men starts groaning in pain as he clutches his chest. He staggers for a moment, before collapsing on the floor to everyone's shock. The Princess, putting down her coffee goes to check on him.)

DOCTOR: Don't touch him! Let me look.

(The Princess stands back as the Doctor crouches down next to the man, watching as thick black lines being to appear on the back of his hand, like the previous infected patients.)

HOBSON: Here, Charlie and you– what's your name– Ben, give us a hand to get him into the medical unit.

DOCTOR: Try not to touch his skin.

(The Doctor stands back as Ben and Charlie carry the newly infected man into the sickbay.)

PRINCESS: Is it the same as the rest?

DOCTOR: Yes. Identical.

POLLY: But what could have caused it?

DOCTOR: I don't know. But it must be right in front of us.

(The Doctor stares at the coffee tray. As he does Hobson and Polly drink their coffees. The Princess is about to do the same when it suddenly clicks for the Doctor. He sees the sugar, then looks to the Princess about to drink.)

DOCTOR: Don't drink that!

(The Doctor knocks the cup from the Princess' hand spilling it on the floor.)

PRINCESS: Doctor!

DOCTOR: It's the sugar!

PRINCESS: What?

DOCTOR: You said it before, 'No sugar.' That's why the disease doesn't affect everyone. It's the sugar. Not everyone takes it.

HOBSON: You can't be sure–

POLLY: But that man just now did take sugar with his coffee

PRINCESS: Yes, I gave it to him.

(Hobson goes to grab the sugar container.)

PRINCESS: No, don't touch it.

DOCTOR: We don't know how it works yet.

(The Princess pulls on her white gloves, before carefully picking up the container.)

DOCTOR: This way, quickly.

(The Doctor leads the Princess, Polly, Hobson and his men through to the sickbay where Ben and Charlie are waiting. The Doctor hurries over to the alcove lab, setting up a slide with the Princess providing the sugar. Once complete, the Doctor places the slide under the microscope to examine.)

HOBSON: What are you doing?

DOCTOR: Just be patient.

(Looking through the microscope, the Doctor can see the disease on a cellular level spreading and replicating and dying all at once.)

DOCTOR: Just as I thought. A large neurotropic virus.

HOBSON: What, like the space plague?

DOCTOR: No. It's a large, infective agent that only attacks the nerves. That's why the patients have got these lines on their faces and hands. It follows the course of the nerves under the skin.

HOBSON: That's all very well, but how did it get in here?

DOCTOR: Oh, it is the Cybermen. I believe they have deliberately infected the base.

HOBSON: My men have searched every square inch of the base. There's no space to hide a cat, let alone a Cyberman! Anyhow, how did they get in?

PRINCESS: Uh oh.

HOBSON: What?

PRINCESS: I've just had a rather scary thought.

(The Princess looks to the Doctor, who also gets worried.)

DOCTOR: Oh, yes…

HOBSON: Well, what is it?

(The Doctor motions Hobson closer, as he and the Princess lean in. Hobson follows, as does Polly and Ben and the rest of the men, all confused.)

DOCTOR: You say you searched all the base?

HOBSON: Yes. What of it?

PRINCESS: Every nook and cranny?

HOBSON: Yes.

DOCTOR: No chance of anyone hiding anywhere?

HOBSON: None whatever.

DOCTOR: Did your men search in here?

HOBSON: Well…

DOCTOR: Did they?

HOBSON: Well, there were always people in here, so they probably–

DOCTOR: Did they search in here?!

HOBSON: No.

POLLY: But there's nowhere in here they could hide.

PRINCESS: I thought the same thing, Polly. But then I noticed something.

BEN: What?

PRINCESS: The patients.

HOBSON: What about them?

DOCTOR: When we first arrived, there were three infected people in this room. Plus Jamie makes four, correct?

HOBSON: Yes.

PRINCESS: The Cybermen then took the three infected.

DOCTOR: Since then, one other person has been infected and we've brought him in here.

PRINCESS: So how many does that leave us with?

POLLY: Including Jamie, two patients.

PRINCESS: Then why are three of the beds full?

(Everyone turns around to see the three occupied beds. One has Jamie, the other the new infected man. And the third is covered by a sheet…except for their big silver boots. As everyone realises what it is, the sheet is suddenly thrown off, and the Cyberman underneath rises…)
