Chapter 2: The Three Thieves

Hayami's POV

'Damn it. Asking me to be a part of their cause, leave me out of it, Hiei!' I said in my thoughts.

I don't really want to do anything with him. Ever since we fought Yatsude with Kurama, he has been watching me from afar, sometimes dragging me somewhere where human eyes can't see, just to talk with me or asking me to stay with him.

I sighed, easing my anger out as I breathed. Then again, he was true to his words. He didn't want to leave after finding me all these years and just wanted me to stay with him. I'll admit, I do miss him, even if I don't show it.

"Do you think you could find both...all on your own, Hiei?" I asked sadly to the fire demon who was walking away, which this time, I didn't follow and just stood there.

"Don't get your hopes up." He replied, "I have come for what I came for and have no business here anymore. At least now it would be a lot faster."

'So, it means that you don't need me anymore. I guess this is goodbye.' I thought sadly, "Whatever you say, Hiei...and here I thought you cared." I mumbled the last part, turning towards the cliffs as I walk and stand on the very edge of the cliff, facing the ocean in front of me.

"What are you doing, Onna?" He asked facing his body towards me as he stopped in his tracks.

"Like what you said: You have no business here anymore. More like I have no business in being here with you anymore." I said, feeling my heart being stabbed at this point from all the pain. "Now that you have that Jagan eye, there's no point for me to stay with you."

A single tear fell from my eyes as a gust of wind blows in front of her, making the tear blow towards Hiei, landing on his cheek.

"Hayami, what are you saying?" He asked with a hint of concern in his voice, but I didn't answer.

I jumped off the cliff, not wanting to see him again. All that was left was the pain I'm feeling.

I kept walking and walking down the streets, remembering the last talk I had with Hiei in demon world. In truth, having him part of my life is someone I would cherish for eternity.

Botan who ran towards me out of nowhere was in a rush.

"Botan, what's gotten into you?" I asked the grim reaper, "Did something happen?"

"Hayami, have you seen a boy with black hair, wearing a green uniform anywhere?" Botan asked,

"No. The only reason why I'm in town is that Koenma told me to meet the new spirit detective here. I've been walking for almost an hour just to feel his small spirit energy. Why?"

"Because that boy is the new spirit detective. Not only that, Koenma asked him to go after the three thieves who stole three of the ancient artifacts of darkness. Yusuke doesn't know who he is up against." Botan explained, "These three thieves are Gouki, Kurama, and Hiei. They stole the Orb of Baasts, The Forlorn hope, and the Shadow Sword not too long ago."

'So those were the artifacts that Kurama was talking about.' Right then, a soul went by, floating away from a crowd of people. Me and Botan saw a young boy lying in his parent's arms.

'Could it be that one of the artifacts that did this?' I mentally asked myself as I immediately followed the soul in the direction it is headed.

Upon following, I bumped into someone accidentally which caused both of us to fall to the ground.

"Hey, watch where you're going, lady!" A teenage boy yelled at me.

"Sorry, I didn't mean to bump into you." I said to him a bit harshly as I got up and continued running towards the floating soul.

"Hey! Wait! You could see that?!" The same boy yelled as he asked me.

I looked at him thoroughly to see that he has black hair and wearing a green school uniform.

"You're Yusuke Urameshi, the new spirit detective, aren't you?" I asked as we kept running,

"Yeah, and how the hell did you know my freakin' name?! Are you a stalker or something?" Yusuke asked, "Plus, how could you see the freaking soul?!"

"Koenma told me that he had hired you for being a spirit detective. I was asked to watch over you and give you any assistance when necessary and yes I can see the soul." I explained, "If you're going to ask, I'm half human and half demon. Be assured that I don't mean any harm."

"You do sound like a trusted partner. Nice to know that sucker face is giving me an assist here. But I could take care of it myself." He joked which caused me to question him,

'Is he really the spirit detective? He's too much of a joker, not to mention, he's very prideful.' I thought as we kept running and suddenly it rained,

I immediately made the rain not land above us, making Yusuke look at me confused.

"What?" I asked him,

"What type of demon are ya anyway?" He asked,

"I'm a water apparition." I simply said as we noticed a part of the forest in front of us is not being covered in rain. "Half anyway." I added,

"You see that light, right?" Yusuke asked pointing towards a lit area in the forest.

"I do. Come on." I said, running towards it carefully.

As we approached the area carefully, we could hear constant chatter in the distance. Well, I could.

"Wait here, I'll get a closer look." I said looking at him, "Just don't do anything stupid that could kill you again." I jumped up the tree branch as I cautiously went towards the sound of chatter.

"Oh yes, this is perfect." I heard Hiei's voice as I saw him test the shadow sword by swinging it and slicing the tree, creating a low-level demon. "If the sword can make demons from trees, just think what it will make from humans. I say we go to the next big city and carve out a thousand of them. Imagine raising an entire demon army." My eyes widen at his plan.

'Has he gone mad or something?' I mentally asked myself as Hiei and Gouki chuckled,

"I like the way you think, Hiei. If we teach them to eat souls, I know how we could feed them all. The Orb of Baasts!" Gouki laughed as he held the orb in his hand.

"And once the moon becomes full, we could use Kurama's weapon and supposedly get complete control. Isn't that, right?" Hiei said as he looked at Kurama who was leaning against the tree before coming into the light.

"I'm sorry. But I must withdraw from this alliance." Kurama said,

"What?!" Both demons asked in surprise,

"What is that supposed to mean? Surely you can't just back out of the game when we come this far." Hiei said,

"Sadly yes. Though I'm sure Hayami wouldn't appreciate the idea of this plan when you first asked her to join us." Kurama said,

My eyes widen in mentioning me. Sure, I would be dammed if they would continue their plan, but with the look in Kurama's eyes, I could tell that he wanted to use the Forlorn hope for a different reason. The sadness was read in his eyes.

"Don't you bring her up to this! You coward, your years of hiding in the human world had made you just like them. Spineless and ready to be walked on!" Hiei yelled at him with anger,

"I don't give a flip if he leaves, but he's got no right to the loot." Gouki said as he extended his arm up to him, "Give us the pretty mirror."

"I can't. I have great need of it first." Kurama said,

"Alright...THEN I'LL JUST PUNCH IT OUT OF YA!" Gouki yelled as he was about to punch him.

I was about to jump in and stop it, until...

"Excuse me, neighbors." Yusuke said as he came walking in with a small branch in his hand. All eyes were all on him.

'I told him to stay, didn't I?! Then again, he might not be the type to take much authority.' I thought, observing the rookie spirit detective.

"Couldn't help but notice that there is no rain falling here. And maybe the next time you guys steal some magic toys, maybe hide somewhere where it isn't obviously sunny. Just a tip." Yusuke said,

"Who are you? And how do you know about the artifacts?" Hiei asked as he glared at him,

"Give us your name." Gouki said,

"Oh, thank you. I hoped you'd asked. Hello boys!" He threw the branch aside before pointing his thumb at himself. "The name's Yusuke and I'm a spirit detective."

"Spirit detective?" Gouki asked,

"Don't worry. He's just one of Koenma's fools." Hiei said looking annoyed about the situation. "I bet he's the only human that he could round up. His spirit energy is pathetic."

"I wouldn't say I'm the only one. I got a partner who's somewhere in the area." Yusuke said, "And I bet she could kick your asses."

'Sure, go ahead and call me, but I never even told you my name you baka.' I looked at him annoyed and sweat dropped,

"Oh, and who would that be?" Gouki asked,

"To tell you the truth, I have no idea. Me and her just met." Yusuke said, scratching the back of his head in embarrassment.

'Idiot.' I thought, seeing Kurama then started to walk away.

"Hey! Where are you going?!" Yusuke asked Kurama,

"Sorry, but I don't have time to be arrested." Kurama said as he disappeared into the shadows.

"Stop Kurama! You can't just walk out of our plan!" Hiei yelled as he also disappeared when he jumped.

"Hey, you can't just leave here you guys." Yusuke said, "So much for manners."

I sighed and jumped down the branch as I landed on the ground. I was about to walk over to him until something grabbed my arm and started dragging me away.

"Hey! Let me go!" I yelled at whoever is dragging me as we came to a stop.

I looked up to see Hiei was the one who dragged me away. 'Of course, who else would do that to me.' I thought, mostly because Hiei is always the only one who does these things.

"Were you just with the detective just now?" He asked in an annoyed tone.

"So, what if I was?" I asked him as I crossed my arms. "Koenma asked me to watch over the rookie and give him an assist in this."

"And what? You're gonna arrest me just like that?! I can't believe you would be one of Koenma's people!" He yelled,

"And I can't believe you would do that stupid plan to the humans! I get that humanity's destruction is your dream, but despite me being a half-demon, I'm not gonna sit around and watch it get destroyed, Hiei." I told him,

"You and Kurama are becoming like those humans! You're becoming just like them, Hayami!" Hiei yelled as he came closer, "You once despise your human trait and now you want to defend them?! You're just becoming like them. Getting all emotional of the simplest things."

"And what if I am?! And how would you know what I feel?! You don't even have a clue of what I've been through after I left! You don't even know what has happened to me!" I felt tears about to come through my eyes,

"Rather you like it or not, I'm going to make you a full demon with the shadow sword." Hiei pointed the sword at my face, but my expression only showed anger, disappointment, and pain. "You'll be thanking me after this." He raised the sword up and was about to carve on me.

I quickly draw out my own sword, blocking his attempt to give a small cut on me.

"Rather I like it or not, Hiei. I'm fine just the way I am." I told him as I backed away, "I don't need to be a full demon to become greater. You just don't know how to accept the fact that I'm one of the humans." I started to walk away from him as I felt him stare at my back. "You just don't know how to accept what I really am."

"You're not gonna even arrest me?" He asked, a bit surprised,

"It's the spirit detective's job, not mine. I'm simply just babysitting him." I said as I walked away, heading towards where Yusuke and Gouki are as I wiped the tears.

Little did I know, Hiei tried to follow me hesitantly, but went the opposite way.

It took me a while to get to where Yusuke is, mostly because I don't where do Hiei drag me to. When I got to the scene, Gouki was already defeated, and Yusuke is filled up with bruises. I suppose I underestimated the rookie. I walked toward him and started healing his bruised body.

"What took ya so long? I nearly got killed by him ya know." Yusuke said,

"Sorry about that. But someone came and had a chat with me." I said as I continued healing him,

"Oh well, you missed the fun." He said looking at Gouki. "By the way, I haven't gotten to know your name."

"Right, when you were about to introduce me, but you don't have a clue of what my name is you, idiot!" I scoffed, making Yusuke chuckle nervously and sweat dropped, "But anyway, my name is Hayami, Hayami Ezume."

"Nice to meet you. By the way, at least got the orb back." Yusuke said as he showed the Orb of Baasts in his hand.

"For a rookie, you did good on your first day, despite that you got quite the beating." I commented, "My healing powers aren't that strong, but they can heal your bruises by tomorrow. Anyways, you should probably take a break first. The other two will most likely be hiding since they have the other two artifacts."

"Yeah, about that, Kurama, you know the redhead, he mentioned something that you wouldn't like the idea on what they're planning, and that Hiei guy said to not bring you up to this." Yusuke explained making my cheeks heat up a little, though not visible enough for him to see. "Sounds like you and that Hiei had quite a history." He smirked

"It's none of your concern." I said, ending the conversation as I walked away. Remembering that I should be home by now. "You need to focus on getting those artifacts back. Kurama may give back the mirror once he used it, but you need to be careful with Hiei. He's a lot more dangerous than you think."
