Chapter 5: The Three Eyes of Hiei
Hayami's POV
It has been three days since I've seen Hiei, and Kurama had returned the Forlorn hope to Yusuke. Told me that he was put on probation since he didn't really do anything wrong. Much to my relief, mostly because Ranumi was with him and Yusuke at the hospital.
Father did tell me that he talked with Hiei and explained the things I've been going through to him. I could tell that father trusted Hiei and convinced me to speak with him. Of course, not needing to speak with me face to face, my mental barrier was down, and I could always feel like he was in my head constantly. Hiei talks to me through the mind, saying that he was sorry for my loss. I told him it was alright and just ended it at that.
I wasn't really in the mood, so I decided to have a walk down the streets. I grabbed my green coat and purple scarf, not bothering to bring a sword since I'm just gonna go for a walk. I walked downstairs and wore my boots.
"Father, I'll just be going for a walk!" I told my father who was reading some of his paperwork.
Despite my father who is a demon in human form and works from home, he always gets his job done for his human boss. Though he did appreciate the appreciation he got from his boss and some of his clients, even if he works at home. But there are sometimes that he had to be away for a month or two, which gets me worried.
"Alright, dear but don't stay out for too long." Father said, "Also, Ranumi said that Kurama will be with her upon coming home, so you don't have to worry."
I nodded and smiled at the thought of my little sister with the fox demon. 'It seems like it was just yesterday when she was still small and always love to spend time with the legendary bandit.'
I walked out of the house, closing the door behind me as I looked up at the blue sky. I walked down the streets as my thoughts plague my mind.
I'm not ready to talk with Hiei yet, but at the same time, I want to. Yes, that plan was stupid, but I couldn't blame him if he hates humans.
"Tell me Hiei, if you hate humans so much, why haven't you killed me yet?" I asked as we both sat on the tree branch looking at the horizon. "After all, I am part human."
"Hn. If I were to kill you, I should've done it when we first met." Hiei replied,
"So why didn't you?"
Hiei hesitated a little before speaking. "I could tell that there is more to you than meets the eye, Onna. Not only that, you're the first half-demon I've met and I will admit that you've impressed me with your skills." He said,
I looked away from him and blushed. 'For someone who is born a fire demon with a cold attitude, he's one softy.' I thought,
"If I kill you now, Hayami, I will regret it. I considered you as a friend." He said looking away from me.
"More like I'm your only friend, Hiei." I scoffed and looked back at the horizon, "It's fine. You're my first friend as well. You could say we're just even."
I smiled softly at the memory of how we considered each other friends. Maybe I should give him a chance. Well, once I know where he is. Even if I use my water mirror, he will just manipulate it with his energy.
Right when I was about to turn to a corner, a hand covered my mouth and held my waist, pulling me back to a hard chest. I was about to fight back out of whoever's hold I'm in until my eyes started to get heavy, making my vision get blurry.
The last thing I saw was those crimson eyes. "...Hiei...?" I said before falling unconscious.
Hiei's POV
"Forgive me, Onna. But I can't let you get involved in what I'm going to do. More importantly, I don't want to hurt you." I said to her unconscious face as I held her bridal style as I head towards the warehouse where I plan to fight the detective.
It's better if Hayami isn't involved with this. I couldn't risk letting her get hurt. But keeping her near will be enough to know she's alright. Now that I have Keiko, that detective will no doubt do anything to save her. After I struck her with the shadow sword, she will become a demon in due time.
I looked at Hayami again, her sleeping face making me entranced by her beauty that has no other. I walked into the warehouse with her in my arms and gently placed her a bit further from the entrance. As much as I wanted her to stay out of this, I can't risk losing her.
The warehouse door opened to see the detective and his assistant.
"Get out here Hiei!? I might your ass!" The detective yelled as the door closed. The humans I've hypnotized all went towards them. "What the? Who the hell are they?" He clenched his fist,
"Physically they're normal humans, but it looks like Hiei is controlling their minds." The girl said,
"He what?"
"The record department doesn't know about this, in order for him to control so many humans at once he must possess the Jagan." She explained,
"Well done." I said, making them both look at me as I chuckled and held the shadow sword in my hand, "I used my powers to round them up this morning. They don't do much anything against you, but they do make excellent scenery."
"That's some pimple." The detective said looking at my Jagan eye.
"It's the Jagan. The third eye for the spirit." The girl explained,
"Normal humans would've succumbed to its powers right now, but I see that the geniuses of spirit world found a nice pick." I said smirking, "That's why I brought insurance."
They both looked behind me to see Keiko unconscious as she was held by the two hypnotized humans.
"Keiko! Hey what are you planning to do with her?!" The detective asked,
"Nothing more if you'd brought me the weapons." I said as he showed the two artifacts. "Ooh good boy. Both the Orb of Baasts and that precious Forlorn hope. You may have her." The two humans let the girl go as both rushed to her while I have the other two artifacts.
"So maybe my plans had a few setbacks, but the end results are the same." I chuckled looking at the two artifacts in my grasp. "All three ancient weapons of darkness are in my control. And those fools should now be bowing at my feet."
"You should stop bragging." Yusuke said to me, making me turn my head towards him. "It'll make it even more embarrassing for you. Now that I've got Keiko, I'm gonna rip out your teeth."
I scoffed at him. "Try. I'll give you a head start." I told him, making him look annoyed,
"You know that cocky laugh is starting to piss me off!" He ran towards me, attempting a punch even. Useless as I quickly dodged with my speed, causing him to miss in a blink of an eye. "He vanished."
"I'm still here. I only just stepped to the side." I said, jumping up to the big crate behind me. "Was that a real hit? I was under the impression that it was a joke. Oh, but wait, you're not amused." I smirked, "And as for Keiko..."
"What?!" He yelled,
"Did you really think I'd relinquish my hostage without the reward?" I asked him, "Look at her closely, Yusuke. You'll see that she's still mine."
"You're lying!" He said, running up to the girl.
"Am I?" I smirked at this.
"What is that thing?" He asked no one in particular. "I-I don't understand. How?"
"You may have her body, but her future is mine." I held out the shadow sword. "You see, I've struck her with the shadow sword. And once that Jagan eye opens up, she becomes a demon. Not a very smart one I'm afraid, but perfect for a slave." I explained as the Jagan eye on the girl's forehead started to open.
The blue-haired girl pushed Yusuke aside as she used her powers to stop the eye from opening.
"I'll prevent it from opening. You go punch his brains out." She said to the detective.
"Yes, you better punch them out quickly if you care about your assistant." I said, "I can feel her precious energy draining fast. Pity. Her poor little body is giving it everything it has. Soon you'll have a girlfriend who's a demon and an assistant who's dead."
"Is that true?" Yusuke asked,
"Don't worry about me, Yusuke. I'll stop it for as long as I can." She said as she starts to struggle.
I laughed at this, seeing the detective get annoyed from the look on his face. "Oh, that's it." He said standing up. "You better be lucky that Hayami isn't here. She's definitely gonna be pissed off about this as much as I am!"
I chuckled, "Oh, believe me, she won't be seeing this, and I'm glad you're so enthused. The game would be more exciting this way."
"What game?" He asked,
"The hilt of this sword is hollow. Contained in it is the only antidote to stop the sword's effect." I said holding out the sword. "If you get the sword the girl will live. Fun right. Think of it as a little game of tag. Huh?!" I said in shock as he swiftly jumped in front of me, punching me in the face.
'Faster than I thought.' I thought as I rubbed my face a little. "What happened spirit detective? You weren't as fast as before." I told him,
"This isn't a game, dirt face. Keiko is my friend." He said,
"Now I see, you're a decent fighter on your own, but when your friends are on the line your power increases greatly." I stood up slowly, "You're a team player. A save-the-day superhero. I hate people like you." Yusuke smirked at this. "And yes spirit detective, I'll admit that you've surprised me. But like a true amateur, you failed to take advantage of the situation, you didn't get back the sword." I told him, "A mistake that will prove fatal. But now that I know it, I won't be dropping my guard any longer. The world doesn't give many chances. You've just missed yours."
"Are you done yapping yet?" He smirked when he asked,
"Not quite." I said, starting to get annoyed by him as the Jagan eye started to glow red.
I used my speed and jumped around him, confusing him as he tries to follow my movements. I don't know how, but he managed to hit me again. Making me crash through the crates. I grunt a little as I got out.
"Now...you're dead." I said to him,
"See Hiei, that's what I'm talking about." Yusuke said, "Yap, yap, yap like you're some crappy pro wrestler, and then what happened? You gotta eat up all your words, it's pretty dumb."
I growled at this, deciding to change into my demon form. At least this will teach him a lesson.
Hayami's POV
I started to wake up slowly from the crash I heard, finding myself in a warehouse. How the heck did I get here and how long was I out? I sat up trying to remember the last thing I saw. Crimson eyes...Hiei!
I then felt a wave of demon energy as I stood up and looked to where I sensed it. From where I am sitting, I'm near the railings and from there I saw Yusuke standing on top of the big crates.
"Consider this a compliment. I've never transformed for a human before."
Hiei's voice was heard as I carefully hid myself to get a closer look at what was happening. From behind one of the bigger crates, I saw Botan using her powers on an unconscious girl.
'What did he do to her?' I asked myself as I looked up behind them to only have my eyes widen at the sight.
Hiei transformed into his demon form. I knew that he has a demon form, but I have never seen it before. His body turned green, and a lot of eyes started to open around his body.
'So, this is what his demon form looks like.' I thought, as he jumped and charged toward Yusuke.
"W-Woah, let's talk!" Yusuke said in a bit of fright.
Meanwhile outside
"I just hope they'd be okay." Ranumi said as he and Kurama ran towards him the warehouse. "Hayami never ignores a water mirror call from me or father."
They both stopped near the door as Kurama clenched his fist.
"That scent is unmistakable. Hiei must be desperate to take that form." Kurama said,
"What do you mean 'form'?" Ranumi asked,
"Hiei transformed himself into his full demon form." He said,
Back in the warehouse
I ran up to Botan as I looked at the girl thoroughly, only to see a Jagan eye slowly opening.
"Botan, did the sword do this?" I asked helping her as I placed my hand on the girl's forehead as the eye closed back.
"Yes. Hiei used the shadow sword on Keiko in order to get the two other artifacts from Yusuke." Botan explained,
We then heard a crash as Yusuke was tied up by a red energy ring and was on the ground defenseless. Hiei held the sword as he ran toward the young detective. I immediately rushed toward them.
As Hiei was about to stab him, I quickly put myself in front of Yusuke. Taking the attack for him.
"HAYAMI!" Three voices rang into my ears: Yusuke's, Hiei's, and Ranumi's- wait...RANUMI?!
"Hayami..." Hiei said in shock,
"That's…enough, Hiei." I quickly sliced my hand with the sword as my blood spilled and threw it onto his Jagan eye. Pulling the sword out of me as I kneeled, clutching the painful wound on my stomach.
"Hayami!" I saw Ranumi running towards me worriedly as Kurama went to help Botan.
"What just happened?" Yusuke asked still in shock,
"His Jagan eye is what makes him powerful. Those other eyes on his body are just for amplification." I groan as I explained,
"Are you gonna be okay?" He asked,
"She'll be fine." Ranumi said to him, "I'll use my healing powers to heal her wounds enough for her to stand." She then started to heal my wounded stomach as her hands glowed a bright blue.
"You didn't have to do that." Yusuke said to me,
"I'm here to assist you, detective. It's my job at this point." I said, "Just focus on defeating Hiei, we'll take care of Keiko."
"Hayami..."
"Just go." I said as he nodded and stood up, walking towards Hiei. I looked at my worriedly pissed-off little sister as I sweat dropped. "What brings you here?" I asked,
"I should be asking you that!" She yelled at me, "You weren't answering me and father through the water mirror and here I find you getting stabbed by Hiei of all demons!" She scolded.
I only sweat dropped at her scolding as I sat there smiling innocently. Mostly because I find it adorable seeing my little sister act like this.
I then saw Yusuke using his spirit energy as he shot it, only missing Hiei, but unexpectedly it bounced back, hitting him from behind.
"What happened?" Hiei asked,
"Simple. I won." Yusuke said,
"But you missed." Hiei's said as he looked behind him to see the mirror. "The Forlorn hope. You reflected the shot. Must've guessed the way I would dodge." He turned back to his original form looking back at the detective.
"I think that's called 'watching your opponent'." Yusuke said,
"You're...pretty clever." Hiei said collapsing to the ground.
I sigh in relief, "Glad that's over with." I said,
Yusuke then used the hilt of the sword as he let Keiko drink the antidote, causing the eye to disappear.
"Goodbye Keiko monster." Yusuke said in relief,
"She's going to be just fine." Botan said,
"Yeah. Thanks again Hayami." Yusuke said as I was sitting on the floor holding to my newly healed wound, "How's your wound?" He asked,
"I'll be fine, thanks to my little sister." I said looking at Ranumi with a relief smile,
"It was no big deal." She said,
"Sister huh." Yusuke said,
"Right. Nice to meet you Yusuke. My name is Ranumi, Ranumi Ezume." She said with her smile,
"Nice to know that my partner has a sister." He said,
"I still can't believe what you did, Yusuke." Botan said,
"Did what?"
"Why didn't you tell me that the spirit gun could reflect on mirrors? When did you learn that?" She asked,
"About ten minutes ago."
"What?" Both Ranumi and Botan said,
"Hiei was way too fast. I knew I could beat him if I shot him from behind." Yusuke explained, "Then I spotted the Forlorn hope on the ground and I said 'hey why not give it a shot'."
"You...weren't certain?" Kurama asked,
"Well one time in science class, they showed that light can bounce off mirrors and I thought that it might be the same." Yusuke said,
"Might?! You risked our lives on a 'might'?!" Botan said, "And what if the spirit gun hadn't bounced off the mirror, what would happen then?"
"Get chopped to pieces I guess."
Botan and Ranumi flinched at this and me and Kurama looked at each other and chuckled softly.
"All the more we thought you were a brilliant strategist." Kurama said, "Clearly you're just a lucky fool."
"Hey, watch it fox boy. What does that word mean anyway?" Yusuke asked a bit annoyed,
"A strategist Yusuke is someone who uses their brains." I said with a smirk.
"Hey."
"Now, now. Let's just be glad that you were able to get the artifacts Yusuke." Ranumi said before looking at Hiei who is still unconscious on the ground, "So what are you gonna do with him?" She asked the detective.
"Hiei will be put to prison for his punishment in spirit world, but only Koenma could decide that." Botan explained,
"I'll bring him there." I said, making everyone, except Keiko, look at me. "I'm sure Hiei would like an explanation coming from me and I would be glad if he could also explain why he kidnapped me in the first place."
"You and Hiei sure are one complicated couple." Yusuke smirked, making me glare at him.
"We're not a couple. Besides, I could say the same to you and Keiko." I said with a huff,
Yusuke seemed to shut up on that as everyone else chuckled,
