hey i'm back

Sorry about last chapter being so confusing, I was very excited to finally release last chapter that I didn't think about writing a more thorough explanation in the notes, but better late than never I guess. Here's the explanation for what happened.

-In Mercs in Remnant, the mercs get transported to the world of RWBY, or Remnant. They then get jobs as professors for the RWBY protagonists. (which is why Ruby recognized them and why there was another Demoman.)

-Creators of the media featured in Mercs in Remnant are basically gods of the story.

-Saxton Hale somehow gets there but is banned to the void because he got reported by RWBY's main villain, where Gaben tries to kill him with things from other VALVe games. (A pretty clever way of getting rid of a overpowered protagonist in my opinion)

-Finally, the characters meeting with me was a reference to RWBY's main character, Ruby, meeting with the author after consuming a ton of sugar.

One last thing; Ness is wearing his yellow alternate costume in this chapter.

Anyway, thanks for reading!

"Well, it's been a week, so it's finally time for all of you to participate in fights! I can see you're all excited." Isabelle smiled. That was an understatement. They were losing-sleep-over-it ecstatic. Spy, not so much, but a little excited nonetheless.

"Now, let's see." Isabelle pulled out her tablet. "Alright, look here," she showed the tablet to the mercs.

"Here is the schedule for every fight that will happen today. Actually, why don't you try checking it out on your own tablets now so you can check it out whenever?." They all pulled out their own tablets and checked the schedule.

"You can see every fight that's scheduled today, or you can filter it so you would see fights only you are participating in."

"How would we filter out the schedule?" Spy asked. "It didn't look like you assigned the tablets to each of us specifically."

"The filter's at the top, just type your name or really, any fighter you want to see. Anyway, let's see here…" she scrolled back up the schedule.

"Scout has a fight scheduled early,"

"Aw, sweet!"

"Against… Ness. Ooo, that's gonna be tricky." She showed them Scout's opponent.

"Seriously?" Heavy chuckled wryly. The mercenaries quietly followed after, until they saw that Isabelle wasn't kidding.

"He's actually going to fight a child?!" Medic exclaimed.

"Well, yeah!" Isabelle exclaimed. She noticed the blank stares on their faces. "I probably shouldn't have said that with that much enthusiasm, but this kid is tough! He's psychic! Oh, I forgot to mention that."

"He's psychic?!" Scout said. "What does psychic mean again?" he whispered to his teammates.

"He has mind superpowers," Engie answered. "At least, I think, I don't look into that kind of stuff."

Sniper raised an eyebrow. "But that's impossible-" Isabelle tilted her head and raised her eyebrows. "Right, different universes."

"Yer still off yer heid if yer putting a wee, little boy against him." Demo pointed at Scout.

Isabelle shrugged. "You'll see what I'm talking about later."

Later:

"Alright, it's time. Now, when you step into the teleporter, there's a button to your right that you push to activate it." Isabelle explained. "Ness should be here any moment now," As if on cue, Ness walked into the room. "Oh, never mind! There he is. Hey! How are you doing?" she asked him.

"Okay," he responded.

"That's good to hear." she said. "He doesn't really talk much." she mentioned to Scout. "Once you're ready, just get into the teleporter. I'm going to head to the theater.

"Alright, bye bye," Scout turned to Ness. "So, you're the kid I'm fightin', right?" Ness nodded. "Well, to be honest, you don't seem to be a challenge for me, no offense." Scout said haughtily, making Ness' brow furrow angrily. Scout continued to rattle on with his infamous (not really) trash talk, making Ness angrier with each sentence. He was glowering at him by the end of his banter.

"Ready?!" Master Hand's voice sounded out from a speaker installed in the ceiling.

"Oh, yeah." Scout got in the teleporter, but not before watching Ness step out of the room.

'Wonder where he's going…' he thought as he pressed the button. Right before he teleported, he saw Ness zoom by at high speeds…

On Battlefield Ω:

3!

Scout jumped onto the stage, coming from the sky. He landed, pointed, and winked at the camera the Lakitu was holding.

2!

Ness ran in from nowhere, leaving afterimages. He crashed though, leading to him being covered in soot. He wildly shook it off.

1!

They both got ready to start…

GO!

Even though Scout had already trash talked earlier, he still continued to do so now.

"You know, since you're a kid and all, I think I'm gonna take it easy on ya-"

SMAAAAAASH!

Ness rushed up to him and swiftly struck him right in the gut with his baseball bat, knocking the air out of Scout and sending him flying a few feet.

He wheezed as he hit the ground. Growling, he got up slowly and painfully. "AghH! Forget what I just said about me goin' easy. That hurt, dammit!" He pulled out his own aluminum bat and rushed over to Ness, sweeping his legs with a swipe from his bat. Scout quickly swapped to his scattergun and shot him while he was suspended in the air. The impact popped him up even further into the air, leaving Scout to jump up and hit Ness with an easy follow-up, a backwards swipe from his bat.

Ness spun out of control, through the air, and off-stage. He grabbed the ledge though, and rolled back onto the field. He spotted Scout as he got up and started to focus. Using his mind, he generated a bright green flash.

"PK Flash!"

Scout tried to avoid it by jumping back, but he still got caught in the blast. He shielded his eyes with his arm and braced for the explosion, but… he didn't feel it.

"Ha! Your freakin' magic didn't work!" Scout taunted. "Now, I'm gonna break your knee- ohhhh…" Scout felt a little strange…

"-nevermind," he muttered. "I'm s-still gonna c-clobber ya though. Groaning, he flipped out his Boston Basher and caught the handle with his left hand. Ness immediately recoiled at seeing Scout's new weapon. He closed his eyes and brought out his shield as Scout stumbled up to him, spiked bat raised. Scout ran up to Ness and swung wildly, but instead of hitting Ness' shield, he hit his right shoulder, like an idiot.

Scout dropped his bat and yelped in pain as he clutched his shoulder. Ness dropped his shield and opened his eyes to see that Scout had dropped to his knees, wincing in pain. It was the perfect opportunity to-

"PK Fire!"

A flame bursted out from Ness' hands, which exploded into a pillar of fire as soon as it touched Scout. It engulfed him completely, a feeling which was all too familiar to him.

"Fire, fire!" Scout snapped out of his strange trance and hastily tried to escape the flames, but the fire kept pulling him in like a vacuum. "Pain, pain, painpainpainpain!"

Ness walked up to him and grabbed him right through the fire, pummeling him with psychic sparks as the flames continued to scorch him. Ness violently threw Scout behind him using his psychic power, sending Scout tumbling off-stage instead.

Using the training he received, he managed to gain back some control and jump back to the ledge. He grabbed it, but he couldn't pull himself back up, due to his lack of arm strength.

"Hngnh!" He grunted as he pulled, eventually sighing and just hanging there. That is, until he saw Ness' shadow from underneath his cap. He looked up to see Ness standing over the ledge, staring at him.

"Heeeey…" Scout said. "About what I said earlier…" Ness gave him a villainous smile with a wicked glint in his eye. He reached into his back pocket.

Scout's eyes widened. "W-what are you taking out of your pocket? Hey- Hey! Don't look at me like that!" Panic quickly rose in his voice. He looked away, too scared to see what Ness had in store.

…he quickly took a look anyway. At seeing what he had, well…

"A yo-yo? Seriously?!" Scout cackled in a mocking tone. "What're you gonna do, slowly hit me in the face with it?" He continued to laugh, but his laughs soon turned into screeching in pain as Ness slammed his yo-yo down onto his fingers, and started to roll it on top of that.

Scout lost his grip and started to fall while making the yo-yo fall along with him. Ness saw this and forcefully swung the yo-yo forward. It smacked Scout in the face, and launched him into the blast zone. He grunted as he exploded into sparks once again.

"Alright, I'm done messin' around," Scout said, while the platform lowered him down. "That was just a warm up for me. Didn't count!" He jumped down from the platform and took out his Sandman and a baseball. He jumped up and batted the baseball directly at Ness' noggin.

It hit him square on, stunning him for a bit with stars surrounding his head. Ness was about to hold his head to try to relieve the pain, but he noticed Scout trash talking him… or just making weird gestures. He couldn't tell through the headache.

"Hey! Don't rub the mark!" Scout hollered. He landed and speedily slide-tackled Ness, sending him flying straight up because of the prior damage he'd taken. Using the Sandman, he delivered a crushing two-handed swing curving up, hitting Ness even further into the air. He followed after him by jumping once, and then pulling out his Force-A-Nature to propel himself with the recoil to get even closer to him.

He got right under him, pointed his gun up, and used the last shot in the barrel to shoot him into the blast zone, KO'ing Ness off the top. Scout used the recoil again, but this time to fast-fall back onto the stage. Of course, he taunted and laughed some more as soon as he landed.

"Wooooooo! Dat's what I'm talking about!" Scout jogged in place. His cheers were met with… boos from the audience. He was about to get mad, but that was before he realized that his teammates were the ones booing him.

"Don't celebrate after beating little baby!" Scout heard Heavy shout. The rest of the mercs started to laugh after that. Scout has been teased a lot like this by his team over the last two years.

Scout frowned. "Yeah, yeah, shut up." he looked at the camera. Ness got down from the platform as the commotion died down.

Scout kept his distance near the left edge of the stage, in case Ness tried to rush in again with his bat, but not too far from Ness, so he can hit him for using that weird green flash. He pulled out his Pistol and tried to chip away at his stamina. Ness took a bit of damage before activating his shield, but it wasn't long before his shield started to shrink.

Ness dropped his shield and combined big leaps and fast-falls in an attempt to mix-up Scout. He slowly inched closer, and he eventually landed a stomp onto Scout, making him bounce off the ground and making the audience gasp. He landed on his back, and Ness took a big risk by using-

"PK Thunder!"

Ness created a ball of blue lightning and angled it so he would be hit with the projectile. Scout tried to roll away from Ness, but he couldn't escape Ness charging toward him, propelled by his own projectile. He was brutally sent flying backwards towards the middle of the stage. He slid across the ground, but he immediately kipped himself back onto his feet using his back… and his arms, but barely.

Scout stood there for a bit, breathing heavily and thinking about his next move. Without warning, he rushed forward, Sandman in hand. Ness was expecting this though, so he activated his shield. Scout reached him and started to forcefully smash Ness' shield. He didn't let up, making the shield shrink very quickly.

The shield broke with one more good swing from his Sandman, stunning Ness for the second time this match. While Ness was staggering, Scout quickly rolled behind him. He pointed to the sky, gripped his bat with both of his hands, wound up, and swung as hard as he could. Ness was sent careening towards the other side of the stage, just barely flying over the edge.

"Home-frickin'-run!" Scout cried out after him. Ness jumped back onto the stage. Gripping his back, he took deep breaths and tried his hardest to clear his thoughts and focus.

"PK Lifeup!"

His body glowed green, and slowly, his bruises and cuts started to heal. However, Scout got closer and saw him.

"Hey!" Scout shouted. "Are you healin' over there?" He pulled out a bottle of milk and raised it above his head. "Well, two can play at that game! Catch this!" He chucked the bottle at the ground right in front of Ness, making the milk splash onto him. Scout chuckled as he took out his Pocket Pistol, firing as fast as he could. A few bullets hit Ness, interrupting his healing process.

As Ness tried to refocus, Scout dashed up to him again and grabbed him. He spun him around rapidly and threw him towards the other side of the stage.

Ness landed on his back and bounced onto his stomach, sliding before screeching to a halt. He slowly got up with his head down. Ness looked back up at Scout with a poisonous glare in his cold, empty, eyes.

"Okay…" he said menacingly. He focused one more time to unleash his deadliest attack.

"PK… Psyshock!"

A colorful psychokinetic wave rapidly shot out of his hands, zooming towards Scout. He barely dodged one, but more immediately came his way. He dodged a few more, but he couldn't keep up and eventually got hit with multiple waves that exploded on impact.

They pushed him to the edge, eventually knocking him off. He frantically jumped up and grabbed the ledge, but Ness was already at the edge to meet him with the same glint in his eyes as before. He went to go grab his yo-yo again, but this time, Scout realized he was going to use the same trick as before.

Right before Ness threw down his yo-yo, Scout let go of the ledge and dropped down. As Ness retrieved his yo-yo after he realized he missed, Scout jumped towards the blast zone and then back towards the stage, catching Ness off guard. Scout raised his bat above his head and swung straight down as he fell.

The hit made Ness stagger in place while Scout landed behind him. Scout chuckled as he pulled out his Soda Popper. He used the first round to launch him into the air by shooting his feet and then the other one to knock him off the stage. Instead of reloading, he decided to just finish the match right then and there.

He activated his Hype and used the extra jumps to catch up to Ness, who was super high in the air at this point. Quickly jumping just a little higher than where Ness was, he took his bat and spiked Ness down with a double ax handle strike into the blast zone, landing the killing blow.

GAME!

Scout started to show off his talent with dancing as soon as he got transported to the victory screen, spinning and carrying his body all around using his arms.

This game's winner is…

He spun around on his back and then jumped back onto feet, immediately pointing at the camera recording him.

"Hey!" he exclaimed.

SCOUT!

Ness was there in the background, unenthusiastically clapping for his victory. They both got transported back to the mansion automatically after a few moments. When they got back, the other mercs and Isabelle came to congratulate him on his win.

"Hey! Congrats on your first match here," Isabelle patted Scout on the back.

"Oh, it looks like part of your shirt got burned off from Ness' fire." Scout looked down to see that there was a hole in the part of his shirt that was covering his chest. "That should be fine, we can mend it." She looked closer.

"Erm, what's that on your chest?"

"Huh? Oh, that. That's a tattoo of my dad! Tom Jones!" Scout pulled up his shirt. Everybody stared at him with their brows furrowed. Spy groaned in disappointment and facepalmed. Scout stared back at them. "What?"

Isabelle blinked. "...but Tom Jones isn't your da-" Heavy nudged her with his leg and cleared his throat. "U-uhm! I mean, cool tattoo! I guess…" The mercs continued on with their general chatter until Scout saw Ness out of the corner of his eye. In hindsight, Scout realized what he said was a little harsh, especially since Ness was very young. He felt a little bad for insulting the kid, which is rare for him, considering Scout is… well, Scout.

"I'll… catch up with you guys later." He said as he left the group to catch up to Ness. "Hey, hey wait!" Ness turned to face him.

"Hey, I just wanna say… um…." he hesitated, trying to figure out what to say. "I feel… a little bad about what I said earlier." Ness frowned at him.

Scout sighed. "Alright, fine, I'm sorry about what I said," he said genuinely. "Ya know, you're a lot tougher than you look." Scout saw the front of Ness' cap, which had a logo of a yellow and black tiger.

"Is that a baseball team logo?" Scout asked, to which Ness nodded. "Ah, cool! I love baseball! You like baseball, right?" Ness nodded again.

"Sweet. Is that your favorite team on your hat? They look… pretty cool. They're probably not as good as the Red Sox, but…" he said in a joking manner, making Ness smile a little. Scout laughed.

"Man, we need to play a game together! I'm sure we can convince, what, sixteen more people to join right? Wait, is there even a diamond here?" Ness shook his head.

Scout groaned in response. "That sucks- wait… we can travel between universes! There's probably a diamond somewhere. Eh, I'll ask Isabelle later."

"You know, talking about baseball reminds me of how I got into it in the first place." Scout started. "You have older siblings? No? Well, they're real frickin' annoying, but they know how to play a wicked game of baseball. I remember that my oldest brother always tried to hit me with the ball, even when I was running the bases…"

Ness listened closely, realizing that Scout wasn't that bad as he originally thought, just like the other guys he met on his adventure to defeat Giygas, and that he was just a bit too cocky. He chuckled listening to the rest of Scout's jokes and continued to enjoy spending some time with the older baseball player.

The team logo that was on Ness' hat was the logo for the Hanshin Tigers, a professional Japanese baseball team that is referenced by Ness' yellow costume.

I had a lot of fun writing this chapter, and I would really appreciate if you guys wrote some comments, cause I would love to hear about how you guys feel about this story. Hope you enjoyed reading this chapter.
