It had been a few hours since Hailey had visited Katie in the hospital and the team was now back in the bullpen. Hailey was in the breakroom, taking care of Tatum, while the rest of the team was cracking on with trying to find Noah. Finding Noah had proven harder than they thought it would. They had tracked his car to a bar and thought they had him, but when they went to arrest him, he was gone. They checked camera footage and discovered that he had left, out the back door, with a friend. The team figured that, wherever Noah was hiding, his friend would be helping him. So the team was now back in the bullpen, trying to identify the friend, to get closer to Noah.
"Hey, guys!" Kevin yelled as he turned around from the computers that he was looking at. "I got an ID on the friend. His name's Anthony Spear, he's Noah's cousin. He has a few priors, domestic battery, aggravated assault, armed robbery, and possession. He just got out of Statesville, he's on parol."
"Great," Voight said once Kevin finished giving information. "Contact his parol officer, see if you can get any information, an LKA, work address, girlfriend, anything."
Meanwhile, while the team was back out of the district and out on the streets trying to find Noah to make an arrest, Katie was at the hospital, with Jay, getting ready to go home. Well, not actually home, but to Jay's house, since her old apartment was still considered an active crime scene and she wasn't yet allowed to be by herself.
"Hey, Katie," Jay said in a gentle voice, "You okay?"
"Yeah," Katie responded, "I'm okay." She said reassuringly, although she wasn't sure who she was actually trying to convince.
A few moments later, Will and Connor walked in with Katie's discharge papers, ready to tell the two that she was ready to go home, she just had to take it easy for a while, and not do any field work for a few weeks.
Pulling up to Jay's house, Katie was nervous. She had known Jay for a while now, and they were good friends, but after all that had happened, and all that he had done for her, she was worried that some feelings that she had been trying to hide would get pushed to the surface. She couldn't help but worry about how her friendship with him would be affected if Jay found out.
"Katie? Hey, Katie," Jay said to the brunette, who had zoned out. "Katie we're here. Do you need help, or can you get out on your own?"
"Huh," Katie said, not realizing that they had arrived and Jay was now standing by the door, ready to help. "Oh, um… I think I might need help, my legs are kind of numb right now."
"Alright, you get yourself turned around and I'll help you get out, got it?" Jay asked and she responded with a small nod.
Struggling a bit, Katie started to get herself turned around, but let out a frustrated cry when the movement jarred her broken ribs a little bit too much for her comfort.
"Jay," she cried out in pain, "it hurts!"
Jay couldn't stand to see his best friend like this. He had only known her for a few months now but still couldn't bear to see Katie in her current position. Reaching a hand up to her cheek, he wiped her tears before trying to comfort her, "Hey," he said, "I know it hurts Katie, but you're so close, you're almost there, and then I can do the work for you, okay?"
Letting out a sound that resembled a pained whine, in response, Katie got herself completely turned towards the door of the truck so Jay could help her down. Before lifting her out of the truck, Jay, once again, put his hand on her cheek and wiped away the tears with his thumb; making eye contact, in a sort of silent comfort, before lifting Katie out of the truck so she could stand on the ground.
"See," Jay said encouragingly, "that wasn't too bad; and the bedroom is just past the mudroom, which is all set up for the dogs by the way, by the way, so when we get inside you don't have to walk too far."
Jay knew Katie could do it, but Katie wasn't so sure. She was already exhausted, she could barely feel her right leg, and her left leg was in shooting pain from the swelling in her back, her ribs still hurt since they hadn't healed completely yet, and she still occasionally struggled to breathe. Stressed out over the very short journey through the garage and into the house, tears began to well up in Katie's eyes, before Noah had attacked her she had a pretty high pain tolerance, but ever since then, she never wanted to even imagine being in that much pain ever again.
"Jay…" Katie hesitated before responding, "I don't think I can do it, it's gonna hurt too much."
"Katie," Jay said in a firm voice, "You can do this. I know you can, because I know you Katie, and I know what you're capable of."
After receiving a pep-talk from Jay, Katie tearfully nodded and muttered an "OK" before getting ready to walk into the house. Standing behind her, but to the side a little bit, Jay wrapped an arm around Katie's waist, helping support some of her weight. Katie took a deep breath, getting ready to tell Jay she was ready to move. Nodding to Jay, the pair slowly started walking, while Katie wasn't struggling nearly as much as she had been the first time she tried to walk in the hospital, it was still difficult and painful. Approaching the stairs that led into the mudroom from the garage, Katie took a deep breath, giving Jay a look of fear, which he returned with one of encouragement. Taking a deep breath, Katie slowly began to descend the stairs, taking a break halfway there when it got too difficult. Giving Jay a quick squeeze on the arm to tell him she was ready, they continued their journey.
A few minutes later the two detectives had made it into the house and to the bedroom. Jay decided that he was going to give Katie a minute to settle in after she was comfortably in the bed, "I'm going to go get your pain meds and some water for you right now, I'll be back in a minute okay?" Jay asked the brunette, who responded with a hum and a nod before he left the room.
Coming back into the room, meds and water in hand, Jay began to speak, until he noticed that the female detective was fast asleep. Setting the stuff down on the nightstand, he got into the bed with a book and sat next to her on the covers in case she needed anything.
A few minutes later Katie stirred in her sleep, but didn't wake up, Jay looked over at her to see her looking perfectly peaceful, admiring her beauty he muttered, "Katie Torres, you really are a Mystery, aren't you?"
