Chapter 3
After the dance, news spread like a hurricane.
Jason Blossom was found dead in the river and proved that he was murdered in the summer. Many residents of Riverdale were shocked, and many feared that there could be chances of a killer that is living among them.
Being slightly distracted by this, Hannah is a top student instead of paying attention to her lessons.
It doesn't make sense.
Her private notes were written and crossed off or some question mark.
This doesn't feel like an amateur killer or anything.
If only she could see the body and try to see any evidence, which is what her dad and uncle do find the police reports. Yeah, but who would be her accomplice since people would want to know where she went or are.
Hannah sneaks a peek around her fellow classmates. As if God had answered her prayers.
"Seats everyone, pair off, gloves on, scalpels up." Mr. Flutesnoot announced as he walked in, and the partner calling began.
Though she hears and saw-like, Archie avoids something, and Betty, Veronica, and even Kevin are doing the same.
Okay, something is going on between them.
"Ms. Winchester and Mr. Jones."
The young hunter went to Jughead. Dissecting a frog? How the '50s can this town get?
"Hello," She greeted him. Jughead nodded in reply.
"So, how you wanted to do this?" She questioned him.
"I'll do the membrane," he said, and she handed him the scalpel.
It's now and never.
"I hear they finally found Jason." Jughead answered, "Yeah, and you wanted me to question you why you ask?"
"I need to see the body." She whispers, which Jughead nearly stabbed hard but stopped before he killed the organs.
"What?"
"I need to know if this was an accident or…." She leans in, pretending to direct him to the frog's organs and add, "He was killed."
"So, you wanted to…."
"It is part of how my dad and uncle do for business. Let's just say that years of learning from them taught me a lot of detective work and find out the truth."
Jughead hesitated a bit, but he could tell that she wanted to help solve this crime. Hannah hinted, "A great novelist would want the firsthand experience to finish his story, doesn't he?"
Oh, she got him good. Jughead is very tempted right now.
"When?"
Hannah replied, "Today after school."
Jughead is confused, "Okay, forget when. The question is, how are we supposed to see Jason's body?"
Hannah smiled, "Let's just say the police station always had their guys in the lab looking for extra money to be paid."
He was definitely going to stay her friend for this.
Jughead leaned to her, "Please tell me you are taking me with you."
Hannah winked at him. "It would be boring without you."
What are you lovebirds talking about?" Tina's grating, a snide voice reached over to them, and Jughead rolled his eyes. Tina had hated him ever since the English teacher had sung his praises while telling her to buck up. But taking it out on Hannah because she corrects the teacher and students a lot. However, he is pretty sure that Hannah is just more intelligent than everyone.
"We are making a bet of who can take the stomach and intestines out without flinching or gagging over its blood. The loser had to pay their dinner over at Pops." Hannah grinned, picking up the scalpel, "Make sure, Jugg, that I like my fries extra crispy."
And Tina paled and turned around.
Jughead wondered, not for the first time, but he has a feeling that Hannah does this more than he likes to believe. It wouldn't surprise him that she probably knew how to commit crimes for the sake of justice that no law can find out that it is her.
"Excellent job Mr. Jones, Miss Winchester." Professor Flutesnoot said as he looked over their cut-open frog carcass before moving on to yell at Archie and Cheryl for their ugly piece of butchery. No questions who'd done that as Archie looked like he was about to faint. And soon, it was time for lunch.
Hannah finished and looked at Archie and Cheryl's table.
"What did I miss?"
It took Jughead his willpower not to laugh out loud. Yes, this girl is someone he would want to be around.
Hannah does not want to involve herself with Archie and others right now. Betty still believes that she is okay, but my God, she can be pretty stupid for a smart girl.
Jughead came to be by her side for lunch.
"Okay, you say that you know how to get in?" Jughead has been bugging himself about the idea over the case with Jason's death. And against his better judgment, Hannah seems to be the only link to get him to the truth.
"I called ahead and questioned him over Jason's body. I even said that I would pay him to get me in. He said, if there is someone with me, I'll pay extra, so I said I will see if my partner will agree to it." Hannah answered and took the bite off of her sandwich.
Jughead looked surprised. He would be asked if not for something happening ahead of him.
Principal Weatherbee and Archie began talking, and Jughead stood up straight. Principal Weatherbee was looking at Archie, unlike how Jughead had watched his friend when he asked about the July 4th mishap.
"Something's up," Reluctantly, he put his tray away and got up. As Archie left for the school building, he followed too, "Come on."
As quietly as they could, they followed Archie. When finally, they turned a corner to see no one there, he swore quietly at having lost him.
"Jughead," Came to a whisper, and he saw Hannah gesturing at him furiously to come over to where she was peering in through the little pane of glass in the door of the music room, and he joined her only to reel at what he was seeing.
Ms. Grundy and Archie in an illegally intimate embrace.
The bell's ringing had the couple springing apart, and Abigail pulled him away as students streamed into the hallway.
She couldn't believe her eyes. Rubbing her looks to get herself a clear image or memories because she hoped that she was sleepy or simply over-imagined.
"Jughead, tell me that I saw nothing more than a simple hug and nothing else?" He saw her being scared and looked like she wanted to cry.
It breaks his heart. To see your family in that situation.
He hugged her since it was the smart thing to do. Few minutes of calm down, Hannah questioned, "What are we going to do? Tell Weatherbee or…"
Jughead shakes his head. "No."
"Jughead, you know that Archie…What he is doing… What they are doing is not healthy."
Hannah brought her inhaler to breathe, taking two puffs before taking a moment to breathe again. It always makes her nervous or anxious that makes her go-to attacks of her asthma.
"I'll talk to him."
She shakes her head, "But what of if he refused to listen. I can tell that woman would actually die before their secret is out."
"Just give me a day." Jughead beg.
"DO you believe that?" Hannah snorted and added, "I see that a lot from news, documentaries, and crime shows. She may not know it, but she is a predator and Archie will be seen as a victim. Since the law would state a statutory rape against her."
Jughead knew she was right. The law would be against them, but he is hoping to try.
"A day, then we will do what you wanted to deal with."
Hannah nodded, "One day, then you tell me about."
That was a done deal for them.
"For now, we need to focus on Jason before you do."
Hannah and Jughead waited for their inside person. The young man with a lab and glasses waved them inside.
"Okay, where's my money?"
Hannah retorted, "Show us the body."
Jughead stood between them as they haggled their deal. He is scared and nervous if they are going to get caught.
Worse they could go to jail. When Hannah throws one bulk of the money into his hand, his feeling becomes calm.
"You'll get the rest once we see the body."
The inside man eagerly agreed to bring them into the lab and forced them to wear lab coats.
So far, so good.
The man presented Jason's body. Hannah quickly looked over each of his markings and wounds or signs of any evidence.
"Looks like judging by these marks." Hannah looked at Jason's wrist as Jughead took pictures. "I say he was alive before turning up missing. Probably for weeks."
Hannah used gloves to examine his face but noticed his champ lips. She looked confused before reaching to feel his hip bones and weight.
"He held captive." She concluded. Jughead paused and just clicked the camera away as it flashed.
Snaps. Snaps. Snap. SNAPS!
Back at Hannah's room, Jughead looked at the photos.
"Captive?"
Hannah brings up the photo to his face.
"There are signs of bones are visibly showing their bumps from their skins. I say that Jason was alive, and Cheryl could be lying about his supposed death of drowning."
Jughead looked at the photos that Jason does look beaten or starved to death.
"But why?"
"That is a good question. Why would a person goes through so much trouble for Jason to remain hidden?"
Hannah and Jughead looked through these photos. It looks like Archie and her uncle will be home soon.
"Quick, let's hide these photos."
Jughead did as she said.
She has her own personal small safe where she can hide anything. Hannah locked it, hid it under her bed, and quickly turned on the tv to make it seem that Jughead and she were just finishing Lord of the rings the Hobbit.
Fred knocked on the door.
"Hannah, you in there?"
"Yeah, and Jughead is here too."
Fred opened the door fast as he looked at the two kids. Jeeze, what is he expecting?
"Oh," Fred looked at the sight as he saw their movie ending. "Hey Jughead, how are you doing?"
"Um," If he didn't know better. Fred Andrews is more worried that he is a boy in his niece's room. And he wanted to make sure that they are not doing anything like tv shows such as "16 and Pregnant."
"Okay." Fred nodded at Jughead's answers.
"Okay." Hannah's uncle repeatedly same answer.
It was awkward and quiet for them. Hannah hears the door opened and Archie announces, "I'm home!"
Hannah perked up a bit. "Archie's home."
"Right." Jughead got up and said, "I will see you tomorrow."
Hannah nodded and waved bye.
Fred briefly smiled at Jughead and looked like he wanted to question or ask Hannah.
Fred gestured awkwardly, "Are you…?"
"Jughead and I are just friends."
God, why did he feel the need to be confirmed by her? She promised that her uncles like Fred and Sam would be first to know before her dad would kill any boyfriends.
Fred looked relieved and seemed better.
"Great." He nodded and slowly left as he waved her. "Great." She heard him repeat before walking down the stairs.
Hannah opened her Laptop and decided against her better judgment. She decided to upload a photo of Mrs. Grundy and wrote her name to her old friend and neighbor, Mr. Stabler, who was once a police officer to a private investigator.
Sent the email with a click of her button, and now she waits.
"Sorry, Archie, Jughead. But I had to do this, or else may god forgive."
Later that night, at 3:00 a.m.…
Her phone receives a text message. Hannah sluggishly picked up her and read it.
MEET ME OUTSIDE OF YOUR HOUSE NOW!
Hannah quickly up and put on the jacket. She made herself practice which stairs make noise and others don't. Opening the door, and walked up to where Jughead was waiting for her outside.
"Jughead, what's up?"
Jughead scratches his neck and answers, "It's Archie."
He told her about confronting him about the summer, his relationship with Mrs. Grundy, and the possible truth about Jason's case.
Hannah felt a headache coming in. Archie is still protecting a pedophile.
"My God, I thought with… you to talk with him. But now I see how she sinks her claws in his flesh."
"We need to tell someone."
Jughead pleads with her, "But we can't."
"Jughead listen to me. If this kept quiet about Jason's possible murder, they would find out about it, and worse they will dig deeper into their personal lives." Hannah urged him. "And I am not talking about the police."
Jughead knew that she meant the Blossoms. No doubt that they will be out for blood. His friend's blood.
"Unless Archie back's me up, he won't go against her. Plus, she worked at that school for three years." Jughead sighed. Perhaps she is right. Grundy is putting herself over Jason's death and will only worsen Archie.
"I had already had a backup plan." She announced it.
Jughead looked at her, shocked.
"I had sent Ms. Grundy's picture from the student lodge and name to Mr. Stabler, who said he will investigate her background just in case."
Jughead looked surprised but slightly hurt.
"You didn't believe that I could help Archie by talking?"
"No Jughead. I did have hope that I was wrong, but as you said, Ms. Grundy has been working in that school for three years. How many victims did she silence them?" Hannah was honest about her personal feelings.
"Okay, we will do it your way." Jughead agreed with her plan.
Hannah decided to confirm, "Listen, even if there are no possible records or reports, she is hiding something. Did she act anything weird or notice any changes from her?"
"No, though I did hear something about Jason before his death."
"What?"
"He used to have private music lessons with Ms. Grundy. Cheryl said, "He came home looked ragged and announced he doesn't want to play music anymore with Ms. Grundy."
Hannah gasped when she pressed her hand to cover her mouth.
Oh God, there is a chance Ms. Grundy was involved with Jason Blossom.
It was worst than she feared.
Next day at Riverdale High School….
Hannah was drawing pictures and graphic designs in her comics. Jughead whispers the details as she scraped or added lines.
The cops interrogated almost all the students. They left pretty early since it was going to be a lengthy investigation.
"Still no added details about Jason?" She whispers as she draws her shadow demons. Jughead nodded, "Yeah, they worried it could be a cold case."
At this rate, Jason will not be closed since no one really knows or comes forward.
"I hope not."
It was a dead-end though she brought good news.
"The inside guy called me today. He said that Jason could not have died on July 4th, and muscle is stiffed as he had exercised from running or something before or after his capture. Even if he was only kept captive for six hours or so before being shot, the gun did not match at all when everyone heard the gunshot on the 4th of July. So, the question is this, who made the second shot silence that no one could hear at all?"
Jughead wondered about it. She is right. It doesn't make sense. Jason had been shot, but who did it on the 4th of July? She said his body was stiff as the muscle wasn't settled in when a person died yet. So, was he kept hostages for days or kept in the freezer until they decided to dump his body?
"Was there anyone declared missing or wounded from a gunshot?" She questioned Jughead as she watched him clench his jaw.
No.
They only cared about Jason.
Everyone else doesn't matter.
"-Like Jughead." Reggie's braying voice called out, and they turned to see the boy looking at him. "What was it like Suicide Squad? When you shot Jason, and you didn't do stuff to the body, did you? Like...after."
"It's called, Necrophilia." He sassed. "Can you even spell that?"
Reggie did not like that.
Hannah watched as Reggie was pushing Jughead too hard. Archie came to his rescue and took the punch from Reggie. Winchester girl noticed something off from Reggie's scent.
'Why did he smell like a wet dog?'
She put her sketchbook away and pulled out her handkerchief for Archie.
"You, okay?" She questioned her cousin, but mainly for Jughead.
"Fine." The boys answered at the same time which she snorted at them.
At least they found their common ground for their redeeming friendships.
Pep rallies. More like vanity for Cheryl Blossom and her deceased brother, Jason, and Hannah hated that his only living sister was sucking up to all of this attention.
Her phone vibrated.
Jughead must have decided to send a message.
'Archie telling bee about gunshot tomorrow'
Well, perhaps Archie released that, unlike Jason, he has someone who loved and cared about him.
'What about Ms. Grundy?'
Hannah hoped that she would do the right thing.
'A bit of argument about it, but I am hoping he will slip up and blurted out.'
Her heart dropped, and she knew that Archie would hate her for this. Hannah left home to look at her email from Mr. Stabler.
He told her on Zoom about Ms. Grundy. He warned her that this would give a lot of trouble if not given to the police and keep her guardian and parents informed. He added that he is glad she contacted him, for who knows what this woman could have done if not investigated.
She looked up all the files that he collected for her.
They had reported news reports, tabloids, tv news, courts, and missing files for Geraldine Grundy. The real Geraldine Grundy was actually an older woman. Then who was this teacher? The following link gasped her and tears from her eyes.
It's worse.
She has to tell someone. She took her Laptop and ran down the stairs. "Fred! Uncle Fred!"
Fred Andrews knew his niece never shouted for no reason, but he is a patient and understanding man. He will hear his niece of her motivation.
He waited when she came to the tv room.
"What is honey?"
Hannah huffing and puffing her inhaler to calm her down.
"I think we need to go to the police station."
Fred shut off the tv and stood calmly. "What's wrong?" He feared the worst. What happened, and why is she holding her Laptop as her life depends on it?
Hannah showed the screen that said, "GERALDINE GRUNDY MISSING?"
Her uncle looked eerily quiet, and his heart began to drop.
"I think Ms. Grundy is not who she claims to be. I think she is a criminal, and I had evidence that she did something bad."
Fred nodded, "Get your jacket."
Hannah whistled for Vegas.
"Come Vegas." The dog whined and ran towards her.
They all ran to his truck and drove down to the police station.
Hannah was very insistent that she wanted to speak to sheriff Keller privately. Fred calmly urged her to show him what she brought for evidence in his office. Opening her Laptop with Mr. Stabler's name and phone number to contact and links of music teacher and her life lie.
Sheriff and Fred looked more scared and paled that this person was living in their community, and they hadn't noticed.
Hannah added the fire to the investigation, "I think she has a connection to Jason Blossom too. Cheryl once said, "He came home looked ragged and announced he doesn't want to play music anymore with Ms. Grundy."
That sounds like motivation enough to bring in the predator to justice. The Sheriff quickly called his closet officers and their district lawyer to gather enough to close this case.
Fred patted her shoulder, saying, "You did the right thing, honey."
She sat in the chair with Vegas, waiting for her uncle to finish talking to the Sheriff.
Hannah decided to make the call.
"Hello?"
"Jughead, it's me."
"What happened?"
"It's worse than I thought. Ms. Grundy could be connected to Jason's Death, and her whole story is all but lies."
"Oh my god."
"I'm at the police station. I'm sorry, but I think Archie is way over his head. I didn't know what to do, and I told Uncle Fred to take me here." She hugs Vegas which the dog whines and licked her for comfort.
"You are not the only one. I didn't think it would turn this bad. How bad is it?"
"Like for the first time, I thought Riverdale is safe, and anyone could trust anybody."
"What do you mean?"
"Jughead, she killed someone before. Please, don't let Archie go to Weatherbee in fact, don't let him meet him at all. Also, stay clear of Ms. Grundy too. It is going to be chaotic, and make excuses for him or reason why he couldn't like they are in meetings or something." She sniffs and wipes her eyes.
"Calm down. Shh, shh. It's going to be okay. I'll try. Send me that email soon. Okay?"
Hannah calms down and nods, "Okay."
Hanging up her phone, and felt a person sitting next to her.
it's never easy to do the right thing, is it."
Hannah sniffles and shakes her head.
"I didn't think you be here," She looked at the person. "Castiel."
Castiel is Lord of Angels, a handsome man of average height in his thirties. He sports a pair of dress shoes, a black suit, a buttoned, white-striped dress shirt, and a loosened blue necktie accentuated by a beige trench coat.
He shrugged, "Well, Dean and Sam wanted to make sure that you are doing alright, but judging by this. I am going to guess no matter what humans would do is making sins against each other."
The Winchester girl sighs. Typical men in her life, but she is glad they think about her.
Castiel gave her yellow envelopes file.
"What's this?" The girl takes the envelope.
"That will be your next connection to Jason's case. I suggest waiting until things cool off and start sniffing around."
"Why?"
"Let's just say something supernatural is affecting the town." Hannah gasped when he said that.
The door opened, making the girl turn away from Castiel and Fred, thanking Sheriff Keller.
"Thank you, Keller." Her uncle said.
"No, thank you and your niece for coming to us."
Hannah looked back, and Castiel vanished. She smiled as she felt herself again.
She whispers, "Vegas, did Castiel come here?"
Vegas huffs at her while wagging the tail.
Yup, she didn't imagine him.
"Let's go, honey." Hannah nodded as she hid it inside her computer bag with Laptop.
Walking with Vegas and her uncle, thinking things are starting to look up for the better.
Reviews are welcome.
