- hey it's your favorite neighbor.
~ don't kid yourself.
- terrible. Anyways, hope your exams and all that went well. I was just going to send you the info for Blake's party.
~ you really think that's the best thing, all situations considered?
- I think that the only reason you two are on this break of yours, which is ridiculous btw, is because I told you something that wasn't my business to tell. And my best friend has been miserable for weeks. And it's turned the best time of her life into the absolute worst. So I'm going to give you this information and let you do with it what you will.
~ don't get your hopes up.
- oh, it's not my feelings you'll be hurting, so do whatever you want.
That last message from Yang leaves a sting in her eyes, knowing that Blake is truly the only one that would be hurt by her not coming to the party. A minute or so later, Yang messages her the party details and Weiss adds it to her calendar, just in case.
There was another event on her calendar for today that had been looming over her for a few days. And she couldn't decide if she should go or not. She still had a few hours to decide.
"Why hello dear sister. To what do I owe the pleasure of this phone call?"
"Do you answer the phone for Winter like that too? Or is it just me?"
"You assume that Winter calls in the first place."
"Sad, but fair enough."
"So, was there something you needed? Or did you just wish to chat about the weather?"
"Maybe I was just calling to chat. Why? Are you too busy to talk to me?" Weiss can hear another voice in the background, but says nothing further.
"Oscar and I are studying, is all. But I have some time to talk."
"Studying, huh?"
"Of course we are studying. It would be rude of you to suggest otherwise."
"Well I'm glad things are going so well with the two of you. And that you dreams of becoming a farmer are finally coming true."
"I am not studying to become a farmer. You make it sound so rudimentary."
"And how is it going with Oscar?"
"Better than it is with you and Blake, if that's what you're asking." There is a very quick moment of silence before he continues. "No offense, of course."
"And you say Winter doesn't call…" Weiss instantly rolls her eyes, knowing Winter is the only one that could've told Whitley about their break.
"She doesn't. I called her for some information I needed and we ended up having a long discussion about some things. And she was worried for you."
Weiss had heard no such sentiments from Winter herself, but that doesn't mean it's untrue. Winter wasn't known for being forthcoming with her emotions. None of them were, really.
"Anyways, regardless of Winter's opinions, I was calling for yours."
"That's new."
"Oh hush. Now that you know Blake and I are on a break, I don't have to spend time explaining everything to you. Today is Blake's white coat ceremony, and I am torn as to whether or not I should attend."
"Do you want to go?"
"I want to see her- to see her achieve what she's worked so hard for."
"Sounds like you need to be a little more honest with yourself. You care for her, I'm assuming?"
"Yes!" She gets a little offensive at the idea that it's not obvious. "Of course I care for her. Very much so."
"And you're currently angry at her? Or what exactly is your reasoning for not going? Do you even have one?"
"We are on a break."
"Honestly, sister, you just sound childish. Nothing in relationships is ever black and white. Except for cheating. That's just unacceptable. But Blake didn't cheat on you. She just decided she didn't want to do something and didn't tell you about it."
"She broke a promise to me, and I take that seriously."
"And why would Blake take your relationship any less seriously? Do you feel like she would?"
"No…"
"Like I said, childish. Go to the damn ceremony. You don't have to be in the front row cheering for her, holding up a homemade sign. But you should go."
"Would you go if it were Oscar?"
"Yes. And I wouldn't have had to call you for permissions to feel my own feelings."
She can tell he has no ill intent by his final statement. That was just Whitley. And it makes a small smile creep over her face. Her relationship with her siblings hadn't always been the best when they were younger. But that seemed to be changing the older they got, and the less time they spent at home.
They chat for a few more minutes about other things before Weiss decides it's time for her to end their call and finish getting ready for her day.
She picks out something nice and appropriate to where to the event. A dress that isn't too flashy. A nice muted grey, with a sweater over the top.
And she's no longer surprised when she continues to find herself thinking about Blake all day. She misses her. More than she could ever miss anything else.
When she arrives at the white coat ceremony, Weiss finds a place in the back, along the side so that she doesn't stick out. She sees, as well as hears Yang, cheering Blake as she makes her way across the stage.
Weiss takes a few pictures with her phone. She wants to have this moment forever, even if the solemn look on Blake's face isn't the proud smile Weiss was hoping she'd have.
And as she watches Blake's eyes search the crowd as the coat is placed on her shoulders, Weiss ducks out of the room, wiping the falling tears from her face as she goes.
