Sakumo Hatake was a renowned hidden leaf Shinobi and one of the last Hatake alive, he was on a mission near the village hidden in the sand. Sakumo saw a group of leaf Shinobi fighting three sand Shinobi but they were desperately outmatched, but he also had a mission to complete. He decided to save the group and forsake his mission, he was forced to kill the sand Shinobi and took the sole surviving leaf Shinobi back to Konoha.
Sakumo found out that the Shinobi he saved was Kira Senju, the second Hokage gave him his gratitude and the sword he used to kill Izuna Uchiha. Sakumo was honored but the rest of the village vilified him as the mission he didn't complete cost four other leaf Shinobi.
Kira Senju told her grand uncle that she fell in love with Sakumo Hatake, Tobirama didn't want to stop young love as he did before. Sakumo and Kira married and had a son they named Kakashi Hatake.
Kira went out of the village with a caravan to get some supplies for the village's hospital, unfortunately the caravan was attacked by bandits and everyone apart of the caravan was killed. Kakashi was only five at the time and didn't know why his mother wouldn't return, Sakumo was left heartbroken, Tsunade was grief-stricken, but Tobirama was left with the most grief.
Every time Kakashi would walk with his father around the village the civilians would call him a traitor and rule breaker.
Kakashi was enrolled into the ninja academy at the age of seven, he was known as a child prodigy. The girls would even swoon over Kakashi all except for one, her name was Obito Uchiha, she wasn't ladylike and would always challenge Kakashi even though she knew she would lose.
Kakashi thought she was annoying, specifically when she would smile and say "I Obito Uchiha, will become the next Hokage!"
"Yeah right," Kakashi thought to himself.
Kakashi didn't like anyone in particular but Obito was always entertaining to watch, cause you never know what she might do.
One day after Kakashi's day at the academy he returned home, he opened the door to his house and called for his father but to no avail. Kakashi opened the door to his father's bedroom, and Kakashi was frozen in fear as he saw his father's cold lifeless body laid out on the tatami mat. He had committed suicide with the same sword Tobirama gave him. Kakashi vowed to never break a rule for the rest of his life.
When Hiruzen heard of Sakumo's death he informed Tobirama immediately, Tobirama knew that he had no experience with children but he had to do the right thing for his great grand-nephew.
Hiruzen took Kakashi to Tobirama's house personally, Kakashi didn't know why he was being adopted by Lord second. Tobirama lived in a small house on the top of mount Hokage, Kakashi knocked on the door and waited for an answer, the door opened to reveal a decrepit old man with white hair and red eyes.
"Is this the brat, Saru?" Tobirama asked Hiruzen.
"I'm not a brat, I'm the son of the white fang." Kakashi protested.
"Sensei, I think you should take it easy on him. He did just lose his father." Hiruzen said.
"Thank you Saru, I'll be fine," Tobirama said.
Hiruzen walked down the side of the mountain, Tobirama looked at the white-haired boy and said "What are you waiting for an invitation? Come inside."
Kakashi did as he was told and followed Tobirama to a small room. "This will be your bedroom," Tobirama said. Kakashi couldn't help but ask "Why me? I'm not special."
Tobirama couldn't help but chuckle "No I suppose none of us are, but do you know nothing about your mother?"
Kakashi was confused "My father said she was just a medic-nin."
"Your mother was my grandniece, making you my great grand-nephew."
Kakashi was left in awe, he was related to the first and second Hokage.
Kakashi grew to enjoy his great-grand uncle's company, and he would always ask him questions about the history of the village, Tobirama saw a lot of himself in Kakashi and it scared him. Kakashi continued going to the academy and eventually graduated at the age of nine, he was also put on a four-man cell consisting of Minato Namikaze his sensei, Rin Nohara a girl that had a crush on him, and Obito Uchiha.
Minato's first test was for the three to snatch two bells, "Alright listen up, two of you will pass the exam by taking a bell, while the other will be sent back to the academy, you have until sundown to retrieve a bell. Come at me with the intent to kill... and begin!" Minato said.
Rin and Obito decided to fall back into the forest as it would be harder for Minato to attack them, Kakashi on the other hand attacked Minato head-on. He was giving him a run for his money, Minato almost lost one of the bells to Kakashi five minutes in but calmly knocked Kakashi out and bound him to a tree. Minato then located Rin and Obito, he dispatched them both quickly.
Minato had everyone line up against three wooden logs, Kakashi was the only one tied up to one. "I assume everyone is hungry, so I prepared two lunches for you. Kakashi was the first to fail so he is not allowed any food, okay?" He said with a smile, he disappeared in a yellow flash after leaving two trays with various foods on them with two chopsticks.
Kakashi accepted his starving fate, though Rin hesitated before eating her food. Obito just stared at it, she was unhappy that for her to eat another would not. She split her tray into two sections, one side for her and the other... "Here you go," Obito said gesturing it for Kakashi. Kakashi was taken aback by her generosity, "Why? Minato-sensei said I was to not have any food." Kakashi said.
"You're the smartest person I know, you can't work on an empty stomach, and also I don't think I could stomach eating while you don't." Obito said half-heartedly.
Kakashi didn't like that she was breaking rules but his stomach didn't care, Obito helped Kakashi from his bindings, and she gave him the tray. He turned his back on the two girls and lowered his mask and ate in an instant but still left Obito's portion, the two girls were stunned. "Done, here's yours." He said disinterested.
Obito took the tray while still in sheer shock of it all, Rin finished her tray of food by the time Obito did. Minato appeared behind the three of them, "Which one of you broke the rules?!" He demanded. Obito raised her hand with a sense of dread, "It was me sensei, neither Rin nor Bakakashi had anything to do with it." She replied.
"You know what that means right?" Minato asked.
"I do sensei," her voice quivering.
"You all pass," he said with a reassuring smile.
"WHAT?!" the three of them yelled in unison.
Minato chuckled, "You all pass because you learned the purpose of this exercise, teamwork. Whether or not you obtained the bells didn't matter to me, you all specialize in different things, Rin in medical ninjutsu, Kakashi in tactics and taijutsu, and Obito in ninjutsu and genjutsu. No one person is above another, we all need help with something. We are all gears in a cog, we function well enough on our own but together we function as a machine."
The three genin stood there in awe, this was their sensei, a philosopher. Obito thought to herself that these three people were her new family, even if she liked the one boy on the team. Rin smiled the brightest smile, "Your so wise Sensei, will you teach us anything else today?" She asked.
He chuckled, "That's all for today, I want the three of you to have your own time for today. We'll meet here again tomorrow morning, relax for the rest of the day."
Obito was always late causing Minato sensei to make them train extra hard, Kakashi made sure she knew she was late no matter what excuse she gave.
The third great ninja war had started and the leaf village's Shinobi were spread thin, Hiruzen was forced to send genin and chunin to war as well. Team Minato as it was called had its first mission during the war and it was also Kakashi's first day as a jounin, they were to destroy the kanabi bridge to cut off the stone ninjas supply lines.
Minato and Rin had gotten Kakashi gifts for his ascension to jounin, but Obito didn't get him one. Kakashi paid no mind to Obito, she was so forgetful and clumsy. On their way to kanabi bridge, they were intercepted by twenty stone ninja, Kakashi wanted to try out his new Jutsu Chidori. He realized they were clones of one ninja and cut all nineteen clones down, but was almost blindsided by the real ninja but he was saved by Minato and the sensei quickly dispatched the stone nin.
When they set camp Obito couldn't sleep, Minato noticed and asked her to come to sit by him.
"Sensei, why does Kakashi act like he has a stick up his butt?" Obito asked.
Minato replied, "It's because of his father the white fang, he was a renowned hero to some and scum to others."
"What did he do sensei?" Obito asked.
"Because he was tasked with a mission, but he decided to save his comrades and Kakashi's mother. His mother died when he was five and Sakumo killed himself in his home and Kakashi found his body, since then Kakashi has never broken a rule."
Obito for once in her life felt bad for Kakashi, she hoped that maybe he could change but who knows if Kakashi could. The next day Minato had to leave for the front lines, the team continued towards kanabi bridge until they were ambushed by two stone nin.
They captured Rin and retreated, Obito wanted to save her but Kakashi wanted to continue with the mission. "To hell with the mission, we have to save Rin," Obito said.
"If you leave you will be scum," Kakashi said.
She was about to leave "I don't care," she stopped "I believe the white fang was a hero and yes it's true in the ninja world those who break the rules are scum, but those who would leave their comrades to die are worse than scum."
Kakashi was frozen by Obito's words as she left, something inside of him was reignited and he chased after her. Obito had tracked the stone ninja to a cave, she was then attacked by an invisible stone ninja.
She was struck multiple times and feared that this was her end. Just then Kakashi had prevented the ninja from dealing the killing blow, Obito stood there dumbfounded he had come back to save her. In her stupor Kakashi got distracted and was hit in his left eye, he staggered to his knees and Obito had closed her eyes and stabbed the stone nin in his gut with a kunai.
Obito didn't realize it until Kakashi pointed out that she had unlocked her Sharingan, she was beyond happy but had to attend to Kakashi's bleeding eye. Using the medkit Rin gave Kakashi Obito patched up his eye and both were ready to go save Rin, the stone ninja had Rin in a genjutsu to extract information. He was frustrated that his accomplice wasn't able to kill a boy and a little girl, and engaged in a fight with the Hatake and Uchiha.
Kakashi and Obito had never fought in such synchronization, the stone nin was unable to hit either of them and was struck down by Kakashi using Tobirama's blade. They released Rin from the genjutsu and were about to leave the cave when the fallen stone nin used a Jutsu to collapse the cave, on their way out Kakashi was hit by a rock and slowed down Obito saw this and pushed Kakashi out of the way of a falling boulder.
When the smoke cleared Kakashi looked for Obito and Rin, to his dismay he found Obito half crushed by the boulder. She was very weak but still able to breathe "Kakashi, I don't think I'll be able to become the Hokage anymore." She coughed up some blood.
"Don't say that! We'll get you out of here and you can have your face carved onto the mountain." Kakashi said.
Obito knew that she couldn't be saved at this point and asked Rin to do something "I almost forgot, I haven't given you my gift yet. Rin I want you to give my eye to Kakashi." Obito said with every breath getting weaker.
Kakashi wanted to protest but no matter what Obito was as good as dead, Rin transplanted Obito's Sharingan into Kakashi's left eye socket. Just then some stone ninja began launching an earthquake Jutsu, Kakashi and Rin had to leave the rubble and watched as Obito was engulfed by more rubble.
The stone ninja were about to attack when Minato teleported to the kunai he gave to Kakashi, he quickly dispatched the stone ninja and continued to the kanabi bridge. Obito's sacrifice wasn't in vain as team Minato was able to destroy the kanabi bridge, when they returned to the village they held a funeral for the fallen Shinobi.
Tobirama even left his house to give a speech for the dead "All those who fell and all those who will fall have done all that they can and I see no higher honor than dying whilst protecting the leaf."
Tobirama heard about Obito and tried his best to comfort him, he knew that Kakashi had liked Obito and that it crushed him to see her die.
Hiruzen negotiated a peace treaty with the stone village but was forced to step down as Hokage and named Minato the fourth Hokage.
Tobirama laughed a bit thinking about what Hashirama would love to see the village he created thriving, it was a bittersweet thought.
Kakashi eventually revealed that Obito gave him her Sharingan, at first he was baffled that an Uchiha would willingly give up what made them special. Tobirama helped Kakashi understand how to use it effectively and without much chakra strain, the more time Tobirama spent with Kakashi the more he regretted that he was never a good father, and this was his way of atoning for the lost years he misplaced. He would take this secret to his grave, for he doesn't want to know how the world would react to him being the father of Mito's children.
It was a full year since Obito died and Rin had been kidnapped by a hidden mist ninja, Kakashi had sent pakkun to tell Lord second about Rin. But Kakashi still had to follow the mist ninja, he followed them and rescued Rin out from under their noses. It took them a couple of minutes to realize Rin escaped, Rin was trying to tell Kakashi something before they stopped and Kakashi was forced to fight.
He was outclassed in every way as these were hidden mist Anbu, Kakashi was slowly losing his stamina when he activated the Sharingan and he tried to kill a mist ninja with a Chidori. Unfortunately, Rin jumped in front of the way and it went right through her heart, Kakashi's Sharingan changed its shape and Kakashi fell unconscious due to overexertion.
When he came to he was greeted by Minato and Tobirama, apparently pakkun was able to tell Tobirama and he followed pakkun to Kakashi's scent but when they arrived all the mist ninja were dead along with Rin. But Kakashi was the only one alive and both Kage were quite nervous, Tobirama thought that he could've been in a genjutsu and went berserk on everyone. But Kakashi didn't know what happened all he knew was that he was still here and Rin was gone.
Minato wanted Kakashi in the Anbu so he could have a more careful eye on him, but Tobirama knew that if he were to join the Anbu he would be lost to darkness forever. Though it was a hard-fought battle Minato won the argument and wanted Kakashi to watch over his pregnant wife Kushina Uzumaki, Tobirama only allowed it because Kushina was Mito's student.
After nine months Kushina was ready to give birth to a beautiful baby boy, the perimeter around Kushina was heavily guarded. The only people who were allowed near Kushina were Minato, some healers to deliver the baby, and Kushina's Anbu. Kushina gave Kakashi the day off and he spent it playing shogi with Tobirama.
Minato was waiting patiently to hold his son until he heard the screams of Kushina and the others, he rushed in to see a cloaked masked figure holding his son.
"Fourth Hokage, Minato. Stay away from the jinchuuriki," they said in a low feminine voice.
Minato didn't listen "I told you to step away from the jinchuuriki," As she pulled out a kunai ready to kill the child.
Minato couldn't help but scream "Wait, calm down!!" The masked woman replied "I'm as calm as can be," as she threw the child into the air ready to slice it like a fruit.
Luckily Minato was able to catch him before she could slice him, but there were explosive tags on the blanket and Minato had to act quickly. He teleported with the child to a small hut outside the village and threw the blanket off exploding the shack, Minato was able to jump out before he was caught in the blast too.
This gave the masked woman enough time to extract the nine tails from Kushina and summoned it inside the village, Minato put the child in a crib at his home.
Hiruzen had to call anyone that wasn't a child or an elder to defend the village, Tobirama and Kakashi were playing shogi on the grass outside their house and saw the nine tails summoned. It infuriated Tobirama as he saw the Sharingan in the Kyuubi's eyes, Kakashi was going to activate his Mangekyou but Tobirama stopped him. He didn't want him to engage with the nine tails since someone was controlling it, Tobirama ordered Kakashi to gather with the other teenagers of the village while he was going to find Minato and Kushina.
He remembered Minato placing a seal on Kushina when they were younger, he then used flying Raijin to teleport to her.
"Kushina! What happened?" Tobirama questioned.
"A woman with a Sharingan is controlling the nine tails," she said weakly.
Tobirama asked, "Where is Minato?" Just then the Kyuubi launched a jubidama at Hokage mount, but it was teleported away with flying Raijin.
"Minato," he thought. He returned his attention to Kushina and teleported her to Minato's home, luckily for him the child was already there. He sat Kushina down onto a bed with the child and returned to the battlefield, to his surprise Hiruzen was able to push the nine tails out of the village.
Tobirama deduced that Minato was fighting the woman controlling the nine tails, he spread his chakra so he could sense Minato using flying Raijin.
He felt Minato use it from the Hokage mount to the middle of the forest, Tobirama quickly teleported to him and saw the masked woman fighting Minato.
They were comparable in speed but Minato had a clear advantage, but he couldn't hit the masked woman as he phased right through her.
She tried sucking Minato through her Sharingan, but Tobirama interfered by kicking her in the back. Minato was running low on stamina and asked Tobirama "Is this the real Madara Uchiha?"
Tobirama noticed that the voice was the same but he knew she was dead, he buried her next to Hashirama. Could Madara have found a Jutsu that gives the castor immortality? He could tell she was not at her full strength and her chakra was different, she had some of Hashirama's chakra but that would be impossible.
"I'm not sure, but with everything she knows, it's hard to ignore."
She had chains attached to her wrists and ran at Minato,
Minato threw a kunai at her but she phased right through it. Minato tried using flying Raijin level two but she passed through it and snatched Minato with her chains, before Tobirama could act they were gone and he couldn't sense them. But before they were gone Tobirama saw her mangekyou Sharingan, it was unmistakable it was the same one as Kakashi's.
It was up to Tobirama to stop the nine tails, he had to seal the nine tails back into Kushina. He retrieved Kushina and teleported to where the nine tails had been, Hiruzen was fending off the Kyuubi. It was about to fire a tailed beast bomb but Tobirama had to teleport the Kyuubi away from everyone else and Kushina told Tobirama "Lord second, I'm going to seal the nine tails back inside of me and die. Please watch Naruto and Minato for me."
Tobirama wanted to protest as she used sealing chains on the nine tails, the nine tails was being sealed into Kushina as she was dying. Kushina looked at Naruto one last time before she died, Tobirama felt more guilty as once again he lived while others did not.
When Kakashi received the news of Kushina and Minato's deaths, he once again fell into his pit of despair. There was a vote between Hiruzen and Tobirama for who would become the Hokage again, Tobirama didn't want it as it brought up memories of Hashirama. Luckily Hiruzen was chosen and Hiruzen had Kakashi become the captain of the Anbu, Tobirama knew it was a bad decision but he now had to look after another child.
As the years passed by Kakashi was nearing his eighteenth birthday and Tobirama had to do something special for his birthday, he had organized a party with two of Kakashi's friends Guy and Anko Mitarashi.
Tobirama thought Kakashi needed to know the truth but his gut told him no, he could not tell Kakashi that his friend Obito was still alive but she was the reason his master was dead. Tobirama didn't want the silver haired boy to be anymore broken than he already was.
Every one of Kakashi's friends was at his birthday party, Tobirama watched all the teenagers interact with Kakashi, he noticed that Kakashi was still popular with the lady's especially Anko. Hiruzen sat down with Tobirama and started to smoke his pipe, Hiruzen's hair was turning grey as he was nearing sixty, and Tobirama was nearing eighty.
"Look at us, a couple of old men sitting at a children's birthday party." Hiruzen chuckled.
"It's not a children's party, he's a man now and soon he might even become Hokage." Tobirama countered.
"Sensei, I would like to know something that's been bothering me. Did you see the attacker of the night that the nine tails was released?" Hiruzen asked.
"I did, it was Madara Uchiha." Tobirama lied.
Hiruzen nodded and then noticed his old master was being hugged by a toddler, "It seems as though he likes you." Hiruzen chuckled.
Tobirama sighed as he picked the boy up onto his lap, "I suppose so, but this is what i get for being kind. Isn't that right Naruto?"
The blonde haired boy nodded, "That's right Gramps." he said.
Tobirama cursed his new found kindness and let the boy down, "Run along, the grown ups are having a grown up conversation." The boy did as he was told and played with the kids there, Hiruzen looked at his master. "The elders want him to be the next nine tails jinchuriki, I wanted to know your input."
Tobirama knew the two elders well enough, "It's not a bad idea but are you sure that kid needs a tailed beast inside him? Mito was a grown woman and she struggled to contain its anger, I'd hate to see a boy have to deal with that."
"I'd say he has a year before the kyuubi is reincarnated and the boy is forced to be a jinchuriki." Hiruzen said smoking his pipe. Tobirama looked at him reluctantly, "Alright, but he can never know of the nine tails incident no matter what."
The two older men watched as many girls tried asking Kakashi for marriage, Kakashi had never said no faster. Everyone had some cake and presents were opened but eventually the party came to an end, Kakashi had gone to bed early and Tobirama had gone out on a walk during the night. Tobirama sat on a tree stump and then heard a swirling sound behind him, Tobirama had heard the sound before and knew who it was.
"Have you come to kill me?" Tobirama asked.
"Yes," the masked woman said.
"Then I wish to know, are you Obito Uchiha?"
"Yes," the voice changed pitch.
"Don't tell this to Kakashi, but he's my grandson," Tobirama said.
The woman was shocked to hear this, but recollected herself "So the first Hokage didn't love Mito Uzumaki?"
"No, I loved her but it was to be a secret from the Uzumaki elders. Eventually, it became looked down upon to love anyone but your wife, but neither my brother nor Mito loved each other."
"I'll give you a merciful death," Obito said.
"This old man has been ready to die for a while, I've hated Uchihas my whole life so it's fitting I die by your hands." With that Obito used Madara's scythe.
The news had spread that a spy killed Tobirama, but many suspected that the Uchiha we're to blame. Naruto was orphaned but Hiruzen watched over him, until the nine tails was reincarnated. Kakashi had lost his only remaining family member and was once again alone.
