In the deep void of nothing but concrete rectangles and darkness Kakashi lay on his back, his shoulder still hurt from Obito stabbing him with a flaming fist but the wound was cauterized by the same attack. He felt helpless in the dark abyss, "I'm surely going to starve to death if I don't get out of here soon, but I guess it's what I deserve. Uncle, Mom, Dad, Rin, and Grandfather, they all died quickly while I'm slowly going to die." He said to himself.
He'd given thought to what in his life he wished he could have changed, his mother's travel outside the village, Kanabi bridge, and Rin's rescue. But it wasn't as if he could travel back in time, that was just impossible.
Meeting Sakumo again gave him confidence, but it was slowly dwindling. Hope was not his greatest strong suit but yet he still hoped that everything was fine in the real world, how wrong he truly was.
He heard the swirling of a Kamui, he turned at the sound to see Obito with no hole where he'd once stabbed her. She looked upset, something clearly went wrong in the real world. "Kakashi," her voice layered with irritation, "We need your help."
Kakashi was confused by the question, "What do you mean by we?"
Obito sighed, "I don't have time for this, are you going to help or not?"
"I'll decide once you answer my question." He replied.
Her face contorted into anger, "Fine, be like that. The first Hokage and Madara have joined forces to defeat an even greater threat."
"If that's the case then why do you need my help? They're the most powerful people ever, and I'm just a simple jounin. What am I to do?"
"Because this battle is going to take a lot more than strength, you are one of the smartest people I know. They can't do it without you, I can't do it without you." Her tone was more uplifting than before.
Kakashi still didn't understand why him, "I'm no match for someone like you, Minato-sensei would be a better choice."
"It's because you are my other eye, I cannot do it without you and I synchronizing our Sharingan together." She said in her original tone.
Kakashi was considering staying out of spite and he deserved it, but his uncle needed his help and he would never turn his back on anyone in need. "Alright, but I must know, is the old Obito still in there?"
"She died during the battle of Kanabi bridge, she put herself in the way of that boulder to protect you. You squandered your lazy life that could have easily been hers, you are ungrateful for life." She explained.
Kakashi looked at Obito and walked away from her, "What are you doing? I gave you your answer, are you not going to fulfill your end of the bargain?" She yelled. Kakashi continued walking until Obito walked up behind him, "You stubborn fool, I'm trying to help everyone." Obito said as her hand touched his shoulder.
"It can wait until after you get something through your head," he said without looking at her. Obito was just about to say something until she could no longer move or speak, Kakashi turned around, "I knew you would come back so I laid a little trap for you, this jutsu is all about paralyzing an opponent and trapping them in a genjutsu."
Kakashi uncovered his Sharingan and put Obito in a Tsukuyomi, Obito's mind went blank as she was trapped in darkness.
Soon light began to shine and Obito was in a grassy training field, she recognized it as where she, Rin, and Kakashi did the bell test with Minato-sensei. Kakashi appeared next to her, "What do you plan to achieve by trapping me here?" Obito asked annoyed.
"It's something I myself can't say, so just watch," he answered. Obito complied and watched a younger Kakashi, Rin, Minato-sensei, and her younger self. It was after one of the many D rank missions they had gone on, "Sensei, do we have to rescue every granny's cat from a tree? Shouldn't our ninja skills be used for something... I don't know more ninja-ee." Genin Obito asked.
"Yeah sensei, we may be kids but we can still do higher ranked missions." Rin joined in. Minato-sensei thought for a second, "How about you Kakashi, do you agree with the girls' sentiment?" He asked the lone boy who was covered head to toe in cat scratches.
He was clearly trying to avoid the topic all together, "I don't care, a mission is a mission. Someone has to do them." He shrugged.
Minato-sensei smiled, "Then it's settled, we'll do a C rank mission tomorrow."
The two girls cheered while Kakashi seemed disinterested, Obito noticed this and said something about it, "I thought you'd be happy with more missions, Bakakashi." She mocked.
He looked at the goggles-clad girl, "I'm a Shinobi, I don't need to be happy. I do as I am told." He answered dryly. Obito seemed to back down from him, somewhat scared of his coldness.
Minato-sensei wanted to calm the now awkward air, "Alright that's enough for today, we'll meet at Lord third's office tomorrow." The three of them bowed and Kakashi started walking off with his hands in his pockets, Rin whispered something into Obito's ear and it made her blush and she slumped her shoulders. She started running towards Kakashi, Kakashi heard her running up behind him but paid her no mind.
"Hey Bakakashi!" Obito said, Kakashi turned to look at her disinterested. His eyes widened as she jumped onto him causing them both to touch the ground, Kakashi was the only thing between the ground and Obito. Obito pinned both of his arms to the ground, she stared at Kakashi not knowing what she was to do next.
Kakashi was very uncomfortable with a girl sitting on top of him, he was even blushing at the contact Obito made with him. He tried speaking but his voice came off shakey, "Umm Obito, you're uhh...you know on top of me."
Obito laughed, "That's the point silly, you've got to try and get up, or are you scared that you're in such a predicament with a girl?" She said with a teasing undertone.
This irritated Kakashi, he shouldn't be nervous, a ninja is never nervous. He calmed himself and used all his strength to roll Obito onto the ground and pinned her arms, he hovered over her and she was taken aback by his sudden movement. He stared at her with a new sense of nervousness, she seemed to have wanted him to do it to cheer him up somehow, but something inside of him lit ablaze from this moment. He got up off of her and started walking away, he felt hot, out of breath, and his mind felt foggy. The only thing he could think about was Obito in her vulnerable state, he hit himself on the head and started running home faster.
Obito was almost just as confused at how quick he got up and looked at Rin who was just smiling at the whole thing, "Are you going to chase after him?" Rin asked. Obito hesitated as she saw something in Kakashi's eyes that she couldn't quite place and it made her smile as she was breaking that hardened shell of his, "No, not today at least. I'll get him tomorrow."
Lord second was reading the village newspaper in his living room, he saw Kakashi come in and he seemed flustered. "Where are you going, boy? Come, tell me what happened." He said putting the paper down. Kakashi complied and sat on the couch across from him, "I finished a mission with Minato-sensei, Rin, and Obito."
"And I'm assuming that's why you're covered in cat scratches, but there's more right?" Tobirama said knowing that there was more.
"Obito and Rin asked Minato-sensei about getting higher ranked missions, and when they asked me I responded that I didn't care. When we were departing Obito jumped on top of me and pinned me to the ground, I flipped her onto the ground and pinned her. I feel hot but the weather is perfectly cool, I feel out of breath for doing almost nothing, what's wrong with me, uncle?" The boy said.
Lord second chuckled, "I would say your body is finally catching up with your training and endurance, that or..." He trailed off. Kakashi looked at his elder, "What is it, what could be making me feel so strange?"
Lord second answered teasingly, "You might be gaining feelings for this Obito girl, obviously that's just a hypothesis though." He shrugged.
Kakashi felt as if he was hit by a log, "What do you mean by feelings?" The silver-haired boy said getting up from the couch, "She's a comrade, maybe even a friend."
Lord second smiled, "I mean you're starting to find her attractive, you'll enjoy her company, she'll make you happy, you're starting to know what love is." he smirked reminiscing about something else.
"No! I don't want to know what love is, I'm a Shinobi, love is just a distraction."
"If you feel that way then ask Minato to assign you to a new team, I'm sure he'll understand." He said returning to his newspaper.
Kakashi walked to his room, he laid down on his bed and told himself that he was just imagining things, Obito was only a friend, nothing more.
The real Obito looked to the real Kakashi, "So what you're showing me your teenage hormones, big deal I had to suffer through my teenage years posing as Madara." She said bitterly.
Kakashi answered her quickly, "I can't begin to understand what you went through, but know that there's still more to see, so just watch."
Obito knew she could break out of this Tsukuyomi but she was also curious what more he wanted to show her, she complied with his request.
The scenery changed to roughly three months later, it was after their chunin exams in which they all celebrated with a meal at Ichiraku Ramen, the tab was on Minato-sensei of course.
Everyone was eating their ramen, all except for Kakashi who was just staring at it. He'd been contemplating over the last few months of whether he should ask Minato-sensei to reassign him to a new team or not, he couldn't look at Obito straight anymore. His stomach would feel weird every time he looked at her, he tried belittling her to see if that would make his feelings go away but she would rebuke him. Every time she did so his feelings grew and he hated it, she was the opposite of him in every way and that made her more appealing.
Once Minato-sensei noticed Kakashi wasn't eating he nudged his shoulder and Kakashi ate his ramen quickly when everyone finished Rin and Obito gave their bows and thanked Minato-sensei and ran off towards their homes, Minato saw the son of the white fang not move. It was curious as Kakashi was always the first one to leave.
"Sensei, I wish to speak with you." He said.
Minato-sensei guided Kakashi to his home as he didn't want Kakashi to feel discouraged in public. Minato-sensei opened the door to his home and sat on his couch and asked, "Youcan sit down if you like, but you're not required to, what is it that you wanted to speak with me about?"
Kakashi did not sit, he closed his eyes and took a deep breath, "I don't think I can be on the same team as Obito." Kakashi said bluntly as if he had no emotion.
"And why is that?" Minato-sensei asked intrigued by the demand.
The white-haired boy looked uncomfortable by the question, "It's because I... don't want to be distracted by her antics."
Minato-sensei chuckled, "I'm going to need more of an answer than that."
Kakashi was now starting to sweat, "Well I um... my problem is... The thing is that I uhh..." He was choking on his own words.
Minato-sensei tried comforting Kakashi, "It's alright, take your time. You can tell me anything, I'm your sensei and I will help you the best I can, but I'll need to know the issue first."
Kakashi calmed down but lowered his head, "It's because... I like her..." Kakashi said. Minato-sensei looked at Kakashi like he'd said the most normal thing ever.
Adult Obito was not as calm and reserved, she was angry, saddened, and happy? "No no no no! It's a trick, a cheap illusion, the Kakashi I knew would never say anything like that!" She tried rationalizing it.
Minato-sensei stood up and put his hand on the younger Kakashi's shoulder, "Kakashi," his voice layered with compassion. "It isn't a bad thing to love someone, especially at your age. Obito is a beautiful girl and someday I hope the two of you can be happy, but I won't give you false hopes. Sometimes the girl you like won't have the same feelings as you, she might have them for a different boy. But maybe, just maybe she'll share your feelings. Love is like a hole, a void that has a tendency to be filled by our loved ones. I recommend you hold off on telling her your feelings until you're older, say about sixteen. You're a smart boy and I hope you can have the same happiness I feel for my wife Kushina, but until then build a bond of friendship with her that could eventually blossom into something more. Some say that a Shinobi's greatest weakness is emotions, but that's not true. Everyone fights for love, whether it be for family, a friend, a lover, a village, or even an ideal. Love is what makes the world go round, but you should also be wary, with love comes the risk of bearing hatred. I've thought many times about how to truly rid the world of hatred but I always come up with nothing, even my master can't figure it out. I'm not saying you need to find the answer to ridding this world of hatred, somethings are just out of reach." He chuckled to himself, "Look at me I'm just rambling on now. Well, the original point is to savor your time with Obito, we Shinobi aren't guaranteed long lifespans, so enjoy life to its fullest."
Kakashi looked up at Minato-sensei and saw the sincerity in his eyes, "Thank you Sensei, I think I understand, I will put aside my feelings for a couple of years. As the saying goes, time is the best teacher." He said.
"I'm not sure that's the saying but I'm glad you feel better, go relax for the rest of the day. You should probably rest your mind, it's a Shinobi's strongest tool." Minato-sensei said, Kakashi nodded and walked towards his house upon the Hokage Mount.
The scenery changed into a rainy day with a bunch of people dressed in black around a monument, Obito recognized it as the place Kakashi went to every day, her grave. This was after the third great ninja war, the second Hokage had just given a speech for the dead and joined his descendant for Obito's funeral. Obito saw auntie Mikoto with her husband Fugaku and their young son Itachi. Minato-sensei, the Third Hokage, Kushina, Rin, and all her other friends were here for her funeral. A young Kakashi stood at the front of the crowd alongside an old man, The second Hokage.
Everyone left flowers next to the monument and returned to their homes, but Kakashi and the second Hokage stayed in the rain. Kakashi was clutching Obito's goggles in his hand, "This isn't right, it isn't fair!" He said. The second Hokage didn't even look at him, "Life isn't fair, that is how the Shinobi world we live in works." He replied gruffly.
"We finally learned to understand each other, but I never got to tell her about my feelings." the young Hatake said.
The second Hokage closed his eyes, "Sometimes that's how fate works, you're hanging off the side of a cliff and then someone tosses you rope to climb up, but when you do so it snaps and you fall infinitely into the dark abyss, alone."
"She pushed me out of the way of a falling boulder, if only I hadn't lostmy eye in the fight prior. I could have seen it." Kakashi scolded himself.
The second Hokage looked sternly at Kakashi, "With every action, there is an opposite and appropriate reaction, if you hadn't saved Obito when she needed it she would've been dead, along with Rin. But because you saved her you lost your eye and she awakened her Sharingan, but this also led to her inevitable fate as she wanted to protect you as you did for her. It was her fate to die and give her eye to you, just like Kawarama, Itama, Aniki, Mito, Miki, and Kira..."
Kakashi quirked an eyebrow, "You're not making me feel any better Uncle, and I don't know most of those people."
The old man's gaze landed upon the young boy, "I suppose not," he cleared his throat, "Come, let's return home, my legs are killing me." Kakashi followed his granduncle back to his house on the mountain, he enjoyed talking with him but it was like talking to a mirror copy of himself. Kakashi was only twelve but had experienced more loss than some people would in their whole life, lord second was like an ancient being, he'd fought before the villages were even created, and he even fought during the first and second great ninja wars. He wasn't hope-filled like Minato-sensei and wasn't the perfect balance of hope and despair like Lord third.Obito knew that Kakashi had a troubled life but he at least had someone who cared for him unlike the old woman Obito lived with, she oh so wished she was in the infinite Tsukuyomi right now, she couldn't handle this. The scenery turned back to the dark and drab Kamui dimension, meaning Kakashi ended his genjutsu.
Kakashi touched Obito's shoulder, "I didn't have the courage to tell you when you were underneath that boulder, even now I can't even say it, I thought it was better to just show you." He said to her. She shrugged his hand away, she held her eyes as if they'd seen something horrid.
"No, you're lying! You're just saying that to try to sway me, it won't work, nothing you say will work. I am a wretched monster, just look at my face and body, no one would ever want me, I wouldn't want me." She said.
Kakashi thought of something, anything he could to try and reel in the old Obito. The memory did more harm than good, she was torn between two lives, her cold-hearted destruction of the world self, and her fun-loving dream of being Hokage self. Kakashi thought of some words that were meaningless at the time but mattered now more than ever.
During Kakashi's eighteenth birthday party, Anko tried getting Kakashi to take his mask off the whole night. "Oh come on, you've got nothing to hide. Any girl would want you no matter how you look underneath that mask," she said.
He looked at her mundanely, "I don't care what others think, I refuse to show another human being my face. My father was the first and last to see my face, I won't do it ever again." He replied.
Anko looked at him with a hint of sadness, "You know the most romantic thing you could do would be taking off your mask, it would show how much you care for them." She said before walking away from him.
It never dawned on him until now, "Actions speak louder than words, Obito. I understand and agree. I've always hid how I feel about anything, wearing a mask makes it even harder to decipher what I'm feeling."
Obito looked at Kakashi as if he was insane, "What are you prattling on about?" She asked.
Kakashi backed away from Obito and lowered his mask, his face fully naked to Obito's vision. His scar was ever apparent as if he'd received it yesterday, his jawline as smooth as a rock, one might even call it groovy.
Obito was shocked, a warm calm washed over her, Kakashi's face was a sight she'd longed for, for so long, but after everything she'd been through to see it, was it worth it? The pain and suffering she'd inflicted and received throughout the years, did she even deserve Kakashi?
"I've never shown anyone my face since my father died, you should know I don't take this lightly. The only reason I'm showing you is to show you that I still care for you and that I..." Kakashi cut himself off when Obito inched her way closer to him, she was close in proximity that she touched Kakashi's face. Her hand was gloved but it still could feel every nook and cranny of his face, her eyes locked onto his and they both had a sense of lostness. Neither of them had ever been this close with a person, they hadn't had the experience.
Kakashi put his hand on the right side of Obito's face, she darted her eyes away from him as he touched her. He moved her chin up to show her that he didn't care if she was scarred, he loved her the way she was. "You know we match in a way," Kakashi murmured.
"How so?" Obito whispered.
"We're both damaged emotionally, we both had a change in ideology, and we both have scarred faces."
Obito was still mesmerized by Kakashi's face that she didn't even register what he said, her mind had never been so blank, was this what happiness felt like?
"Obito, do you like me?" Kakashi asked almost childishly. Obito took a second to register what he'd asked, she didn't answer it but rather looked at him and took a deep breath. She stared into his black eye and his Sharingan, she'd always hated the Sharingan before but now she liked it because of him.
"It's alright if you-" he was stopped when Obito leaned forward and made contact with Kakashi's mouth, her lips met his. Kakashi was taken aback by the sudden move but didn't pull away, rather he embraced her lips, tongue and all.
Kakashi felt frozen as if everything around him did not exist, he also felt relieved that she felt the same. When their lips departed both seemed to be out of breath, "Does...that answer your question, Bakakashi?" Obito said while panting, she wrapped her arms around his neck.
"I guess so," he merely replied after a heavy pant.
Obito's eyes widened, she remembered why she came here in the first place, she smacked herself on the head before saying. "We can continue this another time, right now we need to fight for the fate of the world."
"Before you Kamui us out, is the original Obito back?" Kakashi asked as he pulled his mask back up.
She gave him a wide goofy smile to mimic that of her chunin self, "Partially, I'm not under Madara's control anymore and thus can make my own decisions. I needed you to remove the seal that was on my heart and thanks to you it was. I had been lost for so long, but now I have that spark of light, hope. You were the only one who could give me hope, but that's so unlike you. But hope is all we have right now, but enough of that, we have a war to end." She said spiraling her Mangekyou and swirling both of them out of the Kamui dimension.
