A car was coming towards her, speeding down the hill. As she turned to look, she felt the pain of being hit and skidding across the asphalt. It smelt like burned rubber, and the asphalt was warm telling her that it was late summer. She blinked and the next thing she knew she was struggling to breathe.

oooooooooO0Oooooooooo

Yuki Yoshida bolted up in bed with sweat beading down her face and her chest heaving as she panted. She was sixteen, a while away from her seventeenth birthday, and she peered around her previously clean room to see the books strewn across the floor haphazardly as if just thrown there seconds prior to her waking up. She rubbed her temples in annoyance at the look of it, it was the tenth time that week she had woken up to her books everywhere. She was starting to entertain the idea of poltergeist activity due to her heightened stress levels. She snorted in dismissal before deciding that the logical reason behind it was sleepwalking. She felt something hit her leg and she lifted some of the heavy blankets up to see Bones curled up next to her. It wasn't the first time the dog had climbed in bed with her when she was having a nightmare.

Bones sent her the dog equivalent of a glare before sticking her tongue out of the corner of her mouth. Yuki gave the barest of smiles at the sight of it before gently scratching her behind the ears. She got out of the bed, wincing when her feet came into contact with the cold air of the bedroom. She stretched, walked over to where a school uniform was hanging on the back of the door and headed into the bathroom to get ready for the day. Yuki ran her hands through her hair and moved her fringe to the side as she looked at herself in the mirror. She looked tired for her age, no sixteen-year-old should have heavy dark circles under their eyes. She supposed it was stress from school, she had been unanimously voted in as the senior class representative by her peers. She didn't take long to take her shower and change into her uniform, but she paused as she pulled on her stockings. She had the oddest feeling.

"Why do I have the feeling that something is going to happen?" She muttered with a frown, her voice a soft monotone.

She shook herself slightly, she couldn't help but remember the day she died. She had a feeling that day too. The differences between the two feelings were strong enough that she believed this would be a good thing. She just didn't know what it would be. She shook her head and put on her own steel wire-rimmed glasses before heading to the kitchen to fill Bones's bowls. She pondered what to make for breakfast while she did her normal routine, but came up with simple foods to make. Most of it was European, her guardian had enjoyed western food for breakfast more than the traditional Japanese food her mother had cooked. She placed some toast into the toaster and boiled some water for a cup of tea. She had time to check her homework one last time before finishing her food and tea. She cleaned up before putting on her shoes and grabbing her school bag.

"I'm heading for school, Bones," Yuki called out as she lifted the back of her shoe to make her foot fit more comfortably, "be good while I'm gone."

Bones gave a sniff in response and Yuki simply shook her head before leaving the small home. She tucked some of her long hair behind her ear as she enjoyed the cool morning air. It was spring, and the cherry blossoms were blooming. A few floated in front of her and she reached out with a hand and caught one of the soft petals. She enjoyed the peaceful quiet of the early mornings, and felt glad that she didn't really have friends to ruin the quiet. She noticed something out of the corner of her eye and paused. The old school building stood out against the trees, and she narrowed her eyes in thought. That building was going to collapse one day, and she just hoped that no one was inside when it did.

"A camera?" She muttered as she saw something reflect the sun towards her.

She shook her head in disbelief before walking up to it. She worried that a voyeur was on campus, but gathered someone might've been investigating the building. She sighed and ran a hand through her hair before looking down at the old wood floor. Everything about the building was off, the floors creaked and the hinges on the doors let out loud screeches with the slightest bit of pressure. If someone was investigating the building, she wondered for what. It was obvious that it wasn't haunted, no it was more like the conditions were making it fall apart. She brought a hand up and tapped her chin in thought before letting out a sigh, she should go and ask the superintendent more than checking it out herself. She'd ask him to warn students away from the building so no one would be hurt. She heard a door creak, and she was about to write it off as the wind when someone shouted.

"What are you doing in here?!" A male voice yelled.

Yuki jumped slightly and felt the vibrations from her movement echo through the wood. She spun on her heel to face the source of the yell. A man with shaggy dark hair was standing in the doorway with a glare on his face. She sighed for a few seconds before scratching her head in slight agitation.

"Look, I was just trying to see why a camera was in here," She started as she stepped forward, "I seem to have my answer."

She heard a sound next to her and saw one of the shoe cubbies beginning to fall towards the camera. She was sure that it was insured, but she still moved to get it out of the way of the falling furniture. She knew she had enough time to get it out of the way and be safe, but the man behind her thought differently. He slammed into her from behind and she fell onto her knees with the camera in her hands as the cubby landed on his leg. She grimaced in annoyance before letting all emotion fall from her face. She put the camera down on the ground and got up to her feet.

"Are you all right?" She asked as she lifted the cubby up enough for him to slide his leg out.

He jerked his leg free and sent her a glare when she offered him a hand up. He slapped her hand away and she fixed him with a bored look, though her eyes flashed in annoyance. She thought he was being overly harsh.

"I think you've done enough," The man informed her, and she clicked her tongue in annoyance.

"I may be one of the causes for this, but you just had to be noble and push me out of the way when I was going to be fine," She informed him, her tone just as cold as his was, "you can suck up whatever pride is causing you to be like this, but you need medical help. Let me take you to the damn hospital already."

He gained an annoyed look but stopped resisting the teenager as she helped him to his feet and slung one of his arms around her shoulders. She was stronger than she looked, and he knew that was due to her medical condition. Albinos were usually a lot stronger than they appeared. She was moving him without any issues. She got the door open with one of her feet and kept it open with her hip as she helped him limp out of the building. He had to have sprained his leg, it didn't feel like a break. She was most likely taking him to the small clinic that was nearby, she'd know it better than most people her age.

"Lin! What happened!?" A different voice shouted, this one a bit younger.

The man on Yuki's shoulder reacted to the shout. She herself turned to see a boy her age running up to them. His expression was cool, blank just like her's. She studied him a bit. His hair was dark, though it seemed to have a blue tint when in the sun, and he had dark blue eyes that were narrowed at her in suspicion. She didn't even react to the suspicious look; she was used to it from some of her peers. They used to look at her like that all the time when she had reentered the school system after her parent's deaths. Lin looked at her and her right eye twitched betraying her annoyance at him.

"I was curious as to why there was a camera in the old school building," She explained, "I apologize, nothing was said to us students about the building being under investigation. I was just making sure there were no perverts attempting to spy on the students."

The other teen gave a curt nod at that as he took up Lins other arm. She led the way to the clinic and the doors automatically slid open for them. The air inside was cold and sterile just like any hospital in the area. A nurse came by and helped Lin into a nearby room so he could get his leg checked out. The teen turned towards Yuki with a calculating look, and she simply raised a brow in response. She seemed to be unbothered by his expressions.

"Who are you?" He asked.

"Yoshida Yuki, I would say it's a pleasure to meet you, but these aren't the best circumstances," She answered, a slight incline at the waist became a polite bow.

Her tone was blank, and the boy didn't even notice it. She moved to carry her school bag with both of her hands and turned to watch some of the medical personal walking around. A few of the nurses gave cheery waves her way that she gave polite greetings to back. She was well known in the clinic, and he filed that information away.

"Well Yoshida-San, the school bell rang a while ago," He informed her, "you should head to class."

"I'm already late," Yuki stated, "besides it's not like I missed anything that I can't catch up on."

"Oho, heat problems again, Yuki-chan?" A nurse asked as he walked up to the two.

"No, a man was hurt from a shoe cubby falling on him," She answered, though her tone showed a bit of warmness towards the man, "you can't have missed me over vacation that much, Tama-San."

"It's a relief when you aren't in the hospital," Tama stated as he brought out a notepad and quickly wrote something down, "I'll make sure this tardiness doesn't get on your record, don't let this become a habit."

"Of course not," Yuki nodded her understanding.

She was handed the note and she placed it in her skirt pocket. She turned to the boy and gave a slight bow before quietly leaving. Tama shook his head in slight amusement and sadness. He felt horrible for the young girl, he had used to work at the hospital where her parents had passed. He turned to the young man that had been talking to her and gave him a contemplative look before smiling kindly.

"Yuki-chan isn't usually that cold," He explained, "but please, tell me what happened to your friend, and we'll see what we can do to help patch him up."

Yuki looked at the teacher as she handed in her excuse note. She was waved off and she walked up to her desk. Her homeroom teacher liked to show movies on Fridays, and it was always an American one to help them with their English. She got free entertainment out of it, and an easy A. She had walked in during one of the most iconic movie lines in history. The Toshi station from a New Hope. She rested her cheek in the palm of her hand as she turned her attention towards the move. She felt nostalgic watching it, and contemplated how difficult it would be for her to find it in an electronics store in the original audio. She felt the hairs on the back of her neck stand up and narrowed her eyes as she felt someone watching her. She looked towards her homeroom teacher as she glared at the desk in front of her. She had been catching up on grading some papers. Her dark eyes flicked up for a few seconds and Yuki followed her line of sight to see what was causing her teacher that much ire. Ah, it was the boy from earlier no wonder her teacher was so annoyed. Well, Yuki didn't want to give him any more attention than she already had so she turned around and went back to watching the film.

Homeroom ended and the students were stuck waiting for the next teacher to come in. Yuki had grabbed a book out of her school bag and was reading from it. Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy was written on the cover of it in silver lettering. A few of the students around her contemplated asking her a question but didn't want to face the dreaded Ice Queen. Her reputation for being cold and short with people had hit every classroom. Her past had as well. A teen with brightly dyed blonde hair and hazel eyes took the plunge and walked up to her desk. She looked up from her book and placed a marker in it.

"Can I have a few minutes of your time, Rep?" He asked.

"What can I help you with?" She questioned.

"What movie do you think we should watch next?" Was his question.

"Well, if we want to keep with continuity, we should watch the next in the series which would be The Empire Strikes Back," She answered as she put her book down on the desk, "was there anything else you needed?"

"N-No," He almost yelped, his face turning a bright red.

He wouldn't lie, he thought their class rep was pretty cute. She may have been cold in demeanour and heavily monotoned, but she was very nice on the eyes. His brother would've called her demure, but he wasn't so sure of that. Nothing about her was particularly soft or gentle. She went to pick up her book when someone walked up behind her. Annoyance flashed in her eyes as she looked up at the dark-haired teen.

"May I speak with you for a few seconds, Yoshida-San?" The teen asked and she let out a sigh before standing up and following him out of the classroom.

The hallway was quiet, and Yuki looked at the teen, waiting for him to talk. Her expression was calm, her hands steady at her sides. The teen held a black notebook in his hand and was staring her down, even if it didn't look like his attempts were doing anything. She didn't feel anything under his gaze.

"Is your friend doing better?" She quietly asked, she was a tad bit concerned with the man but not enough to really care she wasn't worth the effort of keeping safe.

"That is what I wanted to speak to you about," The teen stated, "he badly sprained his left leg, and he won't be able to stand up on his own for a while."

"I'm sorry to hear that, I hope he gets better," She stated, ignoring the guilt pooling in her stomach, "how do you know him?"

"Assistant," He stated without any emotion.

Her face was passive for a moment, though there was a calculating glint to her eyes. She was working through the information she had gotten from him and making sense of it. She closed her eyes for a few seconds before sighing.

"If I was anyone else, I'd have thought you were the assistant, but you're actually his boss, correct?" She questioned.

She guessed those criminology classes had paid off. She was used to reading people, not just for those classes, but also for her work to becoming a psychiatrist. Sometimes people didn't want to talk so she had to figure out a way to get information out of them through their body language and ticks. She noted that the boy in front of her had an annoyed yet amused look in his eyes. Well, she always did her best to impress. She couldn't help but notice that he also seemed sad, like he had lost someone as well. She wasn't about to pry.

"My assistant being out of commission leaves me with a problem," The boy continued, and she tilted her head, "don't you think that you're responsible for this?"

"I could say no, but that would make me seem heartless, but if I say yes, that makes me look like an idiot," She stated before sighing, "There's no good answer, so I'll stick with a maybe, though, perhaps your assistant shouldn't be yelling into abandoned buildings if he sees someone."

She spared a look towards the building and gave a slight frown. She still thought that building was unsafe. She didn't even want to think of someone getting hurt inside of it.

"Even though I don't think anyone should be inside that building, any day now it's going to fall," She muttered.

It was quiet between the two after she said that. The teen wondered what went through her mind as she stared at the building before looking back at him. She was just so blank, even more than him. It was difficult to tell what was going on inside her head.

"Would you fill in as my assistant?" He asked, and she scratched her cheek at the tone he used.

"I live close by the school, and I'll have to bring my dog with me," She informed him, "she's had service animal training so she wouldn't get in the way."

"Fine," He stated, his tone slightly annoyed.

"Then I would like to know the name of my temporary employer," She said.

"Shibuya Kazuya," He introduced himself.

She nodded her understanding at that before narrowing her eyes at some of the girls from her class. They had been sticking their heads out of the door, listening to their conversation. She couldn't help but be annoyed by them. They were seniors on their way out of school and into college and they couldn't act like they were. They let out frightened sounds and quickly rushed back into the classroom, the door slamming shut behind them.

"So, you must be the new owner of that research centre in Shibuya," She stated, "that's pretty on the nose. I will see you later then, I need to return to class."

He stopped her from leaving by holding out the notebook. She took it with a sceptical brow raise and he sighed. He felt as though working with her was going to be like pulling teeth. At least she seemed to be a quick study.

"Read up on the case, I don't want to explain things to you," He stated before he walked off.

"Right, wouldn't want to learn anything on the job," She muttered to herself before heading back to class.

She was promptly mobbed by the female students. Yuki became very uncomfortable by all the attention she was getting and grasped onto the notebook with a death grip. It was one of the moments where she wished she could bring Bones with her to school. It would help mitigate the discomfort she felt when surrounded by so many people.

"You didn't tell us you had a boyfriend!" One of the girls exclaimed.

"I don't have one, besides why would I tell you that information?" Yuki questioned as she slowly made her way to her desk, "I'm a rather private persona after all. I also don't really know you."

She was growing more stressed the longer she was around her classmates. She went back to her desk and put her book away, retrieving her notebook for the next lesson. The group of girls had followed her, and she felt some annoyance yet kept it from showing. It wouldn't do to insult her classmates. She didn't need to take her ire out on them, they didn't deserve it.

"But I hear attractive people tend to stick together," One Girl stated, and Yuki looked at her before tilting her head to the side.

"You think I'm attractive?" Yuki questioned and a few of the girls, and most of the guys, nodded, "you all have good taste."

That caused some of her classmates to let out various sounds of surprise. Yuki turned her attention towards one of the quieter girls in her class, she was smirking. She was starting to think she might have someone of a similar mind in the classroom. She never thought about garnering comrades. The next teacher came in, an elderly man who had lost all his hair years prior, and started to teach Maths. Yuki and sure to pay some attention to the lesson as she opened the notebook that Kazuya had given her. She had never been the best at reading cursive, though she found his handwriting very pretty. She shook such thoughts from her head and focused on the information.

He was through with his investigation. When the building had been in use one to two people would die every year, and during the beginning of the demolition the roof fell in on the west wing causing five people to be injured. One of those could easily be explained by human error, though she was having difficulty figuring out what had caused the premature deaths during the building origins operation. She paused upon reading that a child's body had been found in the building six years prior. She remembered that incident, her guardian Misa hadn't allowed her to go anywhere by herself for a while. She had been eleven, at least freshly turned eleven. She had always been unnerved by the idea that someone could willingly harm a child, she'd never understood that part of the human psyche. She moved away from that topic and saw the teacher with neurosis who had committed suicide and the drunk driver who drove his truck into it. She was impressed by his information gathering and the way he compiled it. She closed the notebook and fully turned her attention to the lesson. Maths had always been one of her weaker subjects, and not from a lack of trying. She just didn't get numbers, and she never knew why.

Yuki gave a quiet sigh as the classes seemed to lag the rest of the day. Her only reprieve from the monotony repetition was lunch, where she had a pastrami on rye. The sandwich was enough to put her in a rather good mood. She allowed herself to contemplate what could be happening in the old building. Land subsidence was her first guess, mainly due to the fact that the building seemed crooked not that there was a level big enough to check. Her second would be poltergeist activity from the female population, they were always stressed. Boys, girls, dates, tests, and parental pressure was always something that could stress out the girls in her school. She wouldn't doubt that one or two of them had created poltergeist activity on more than one occasion.

Yuki sighed as she went to change into her regular school shoes from the indoor ones, they required the students to wear. She picked up one of the leather shoes and paused before giving it a slight shake. There was something inside of it. She reached in and something sharp pricked the tip of her finger. She changed her tactic and held the shoe upside down over her hand, lightly shaking it to get the object out. A rack of all things fell into her palm, and she gave it a blank look before placing it in her book bag. Her other shoe had a tack as well, and it joined its sibling in her bag. She had been left alone by the school bullies for years, so why were they targeting her now? Was it petty jealousy? She didn't know what she had that would make people jealous of her. She narrowed her eyes in thought, was it because Kazuya had talked to her and basically ignored the rest of the female population? A part of her thought that might've been the case, and she sighed in disbelief. She'd never really understood what drove people to be like that, she doubted she ever would. She wouldn't lie, he was very easy on the eyes, but she didn't care much for outer appearances. She cared more about the person themselves and their personality before their physical looks. She gathered it was due to her being mentally and spiritually older.

Yuki headed back to her apartment to get changed into a pair of comfortable clothes and put Bones into her service dog vest. She had decided upon a black long-sleeved shirt and a pair of black skinny jeans. She was matching the black service animal vest bones had to wear. She knelt next to the dog as she did up all the straps with a gentle amount of pressure and tugging.

"Is that all right, old lady?" She asked the dog, Bones gave her a gentle nudge to the face in response, "Good. Please be on your best behaviour tonight, we have a job to do."

Bones stood to attention at that, and Yuki stood up. Her knees let out a sound of protest and she grimaced. It wasn't a pleasant sound. She let her mind contemplate how smart her dog was sometimes as she pulled on a pair of beat-up sneakers. She held onto the leash, a nice light blue one that Bones had picked out herself, as they slowly made their way to the old school building. She paused in her steps as she remembered the notebook that Kazuya had given her, they headed back to the apartment where she quickly retrieved it from her book bag before heading back out, this time with the notebook tucked under her arm.

"Right, let's get going then," Yuki quietly said to Bones as they approached a black van that had been parked outside the building.

She didn't see her temporary boss and allowed Bones to sniff around and lead her to find him. The old lady stopped and sat at her owner's feet as the dark-haired teen looked up at the sudden noise. He seemed a little surprised at the type of dog that was before him, but it quickly vanished as he looked towards her owner.

"I'm sorry I'm late, Kazuya-kun," She apologized, and he didn't even correct her on the use of her honorific.

Yuki used it because they seemed to be the same age, and it most likely bothered him. She felt the strangest urge to get under his skin due to how he had somewhat coerced her into standing in as his assistant. She didn't take well to being manipulated in such a way, and she wasn't afraid to let it show.

"It's fine," Kazuya stated before quietly muttering to himself in English, "I didn't expect the dog to be that big."

Yuki rolled her eyes, not even realizing he had been watching her reaction. She turned towards Bones and held up a hand, the large golden retriever went and sat next to the side of the vehicle, staring at the two. Yuki turned towards her temporary boss and waited for him to say what he needed her to do. He didn't waste much time.

"Take those microphones down and gather them up," He ordered her, and she nodded as she moved to take down some of the boom mics he had set up around the perimeter of the old building, "I'll get the mic stands."

"Preliminary investigation?" She quietly asked as she quickly took down mic after mic, "Making sure the building isn't dangerous?"

"I believe in knowing what the building is like before moving to investigate inside," He commented in a short tone as he took down the stands and easily carried them under one arm.

Yuki was a bit surprised by that but refused to let it show. Usually, she was the one shocking people with her strength, it was unnerving to be on the other end of that. She didn't let herself get distracted as she returned to her work without missing a beat. She frowned slightly.

"I'm curious as to what you're investigating," Yuki stated as she finished with the last mic.

"The principal of your school believes the building is haunted," He answered, though the slight change in his tone showed he thought otherwise.

"You don't sound so sold on the premise that the building might be haunted," She pointed out, "granted, I would understand why."

She gave a slight shrug in thought as if it didn't matter anymore. Kazuya wasn't surprised by her actions. Listening to what the people who knew her personally said, she'd been closed off and slightly cold for years. It took her a while to show genuine warmth to people. Tama had been one of the best sources of information as to what had happened. He didn't feel sympathy towards her, but he understood her actions. Why get close to someone if they were just going to eventually leave you.

"It's a little unusual for someone your age to go into paranormal and psychic research," Yuki pointed out, quickly drawing his attention, "why do it? I can't see it being too rewarding."

"Because they need me," He answered and she faltered slightly, her lips parting and a slight frown pulling at her brows.

"Have you ever come across a case you couldn't solve?" She questioned further.

"No," He answered, and she let out a quiet breath of disbelief.

"Impressive," Her voice was dripping with sarcasm, "you're both handsome and smart."

He fixed her with a look, and she stared back at him completely unbothered. He raised a brow, and she mirrored his actions. It was two unmovable forces staring one another down, and neither would back down. A strange battle of the wills was happening, and Bones simply laid down and tried to ignore it. Yet, the dog couldn't help but stare between her owner and the other human. She was quite fond of her human and wondered if the male needed to be given a warning sound.

"You think I'm handsome?" Kazuya asked, and his voice held a trace of genuine curiosity.

"I think you're intelligent," Yuki answered as she began to place the mics in their designated bins turning her back on him, "I was just adding in something some of the girls in my class said. I don't really care about someone's physical attributes."

He paused in his tracks, and she wondered if he had never encountered someone that didn't fall for his "charms". She found that being the first was quite rewarding as he digested her words. A slight smirk appeared on his face, and she narrowed her eyes at him. Just what was he thinking?

"They have good taste."

His statement elicited a chuckle out of Yuki before she quickly stamped it down and replaced it with a cough. The sound of her laugh was rusty and showed it had been a long time since she had done so. She shook her head at him before letting her shoulders droop. She had said something similar to her classmates, but she had been messing with them. Her temporary boss hadn't been. Of course, her horrible luck was still present. It was strong enough to make sure she would be working under a narcissist. Of al the things that could've happened, she would have never guessed a narcissistic boss. It was oddly amusing, if not annoying. She was brought out of her thoughts by metal beams being placed in her arms.

"Take these," Kazuya stated, and she noticed that he had removed his coat and had rolled up his sleeves, he had more muscle mass than she thought he did.

"Right," She muttered before nodding towards Bones.

"Relax, I won't make you go into the building alone," He stated, and she sent him an annoyed look.

"I wouldn't be alone anyway," She stated as Bones padded towards her before nudging her left leg, "please, lead the way."

He did so, leading her up a flight of stairs. He didn't seem to be looking into any of the rooms before he came to a stop outside of one where the doors windows were still intact. She hadn't noticed that glass littered the old floors. She heard some crunch under her feet and her shoulders tensed. The sound didn't bring her any comfort.

"We'll use this room," He informed her as he placed some of the beams he was carrying down on a nearby table, it groaned under the weight of the metal, yet he seemed nonplussed by it, "please start building the shelves, I'm bringing the rest of the equipment in."

"Sure, be careful though," She said before turning her attention towards the shelf pieces.

Yuki didn't notice his pause as he gave her a scrutinizing look. She picked up some steel and started on the frame of the shelf. He looked towards her dog, who had taken refuge under the table its owner was standing at. Honestly, the teen looked familiar before he had even heard information about her, but he couldn't place where he might've seen her before. He left the room and she paused in her building of the shelves.

"I think I might have to pick you up some new treats when I get the time," Yuki quietly informed Bones, getting her tail to wag in a quick manner.

She went back to building the shelves but paused when she heard a loud creak. It sounded like it was either from the second floor she was currently on, or the floor above. She narrowed her eyes before returning her attention to the shelves, placing the rest of the parts together. The lights flickered on, and she jumped in surprise, hitting her head against the edge of the shelf.

"Who turns on the lights and doesn't announce it?" She grumbled in French pressing a hand against the back of her head in an attempt to get it to stop throbbing, Bones bumped into her leg, and she looked down, "I feel the love."

"Well done," Kazuya complimented, though she had to question if it really was one.

"Is there anything else I can do?" Yuki asked as she removed her hand from the back of her head.

"No, these monitors can weigh up to forty kilograms, I don't want you to drop them," He stated, and she narrowed her eyes before letting out some quiet grumblings in French.

It was always the choice insults and gripes that her mother used to say. Oh, she had memorized them simply due to the number of times she had heard them. "Narcissist" was one of the insults, though it was closer to being a label than an actual insult. Kazuya was a bit surprised that she spoke fluent French and wondered what other languages she knew. She obviously knew Japanese, but it was odd that she knew European languages when her school didn't teach them. It was always possible that someone in her family had taught her, some of her facial features pointed to European ancestry. She moved away from the shelf so that she wouldn't be in the way as he brought in the monitors. She joined Bones on the floor and the dog sat up straighter as its owner placed her chin on her knees. The flexibility of the albino had surprised her PE teacher the first time the woman had seen it in action. She had been offered a spot on the gymnastic team after showing it but had declined due to wanting to focus on her schooling.

"You are a strange old lady," Yuki informed Bones, getting a paw in the face as a response.

Bones was just sitting there quietly, her tongue sticking out of her mouth as she panted. The heavy fur that covered her was slowly getting covered in dust and Yuki knew that she'd have to brush her out before going to bed. She didn't know what was in the dust and she didn't want her dog to get sick, she didn't care if she herself got sick. She just didn't, the less said about her lack of self-care the better. No one really knew what went on inside of her head, so they didn't know about that little tidbit about her. If any of the doctors who knew her had any inclination that she wasn't caring about herself as she should, they'd make her go to counselling, as it was, they believed her to be a well-adjusted teenager that had made a decent recovery from the death of her parents.

"Yoshida-San, take the temperatures in each of the rooms," Kazuya ordered as he brought in one of the monitors.

"Right," She said as she got up from the floor and grabbed one of the digital thermometers that had been brought in.

He placed the monitor down and handed her a clipboard and a pen. She motioned towards Bones and the dog followed behind her as she left the room to begin her new job. She looked at her bosses handwriting and felt her brow twitch at the sight of his neat handwriting. She felt a bit insulted due to her own handwriting being messy when she didn't take her time. It was why she knew more information about her classes, she was used to writing two sets of notes. One messy in her normal handwriting and the other in the neatest handwriting she could do. She clicked her tongue in her mouth as she opened one of the classroom doors. She was gentle with it, not wanting to cause more of the glass to fall to the ground. Bones was already walking around with care; she didn't want to cause any injuries. She stepped into the room and her ankle rolled causing her to slam onto her right knee. She let out a pained gasp before grimacing and slowly getting back up. Bones anxiously nudged her, and she gave the dog a pat on the head to show that she was all right. She checked the temperature in the room as her cheeks heated up in embarrassment. She quickly wrote down what it was and hurried to finish the other rooms. She paused before looking at Bones.

"Head back to the main room, I'll be there shortly," She quietly ordered her dog, "there's more glass on the floor and I'd rather you not cut up your paws."

Bones gave a sniff of understanding before bounding away. Yuki shook her head in slight amusement before hurrying to the rest of the rooms so she could rejoin her dog. When she walked into the main room, she noticed that Bones's tail was wagging a mile a minute as though someone had been petting her. She didn't say anything to Kazuya, as he was looking at the monitors. She knew that Bones was a fantastic judge of character, so she would follow her lead. If she thought Kazuya was all right, then she'd lay off him.

"I have all the temperatures you asked for," She stated as he handed him the clipboard and placed the digital thermometer down on the table, "there weren't any low temperatures in the building that couldn't be explained by drafts due to the broken windows or spaces in the wood panelling."

She blinked as he read the clipboard. He seemed to be ignoring her. She looked at Bones and wondered what about him she liked. She sighed quietly before looking back at him. He had a right to know of the one room that gave her issues.

"Right, one of the rooms on this floor is uneven, please watch your step if you go in there," She continued, "it's on the west side if I'm remembering correctly."

He gave her an absent-minded nod and she narrowed her eyes at him before blanking her expression. She wasn't going to say anything to show her slight annoyance at him. She'd wait to hear what he wanted to do next. She didn't know how to "ghost hunt", well, she knew what TV personalities did. It was different compared to what professionals did. She could always think like her mother, she used to investigate all the time as did her father. A pang of grief went through her, and she pushed it to the side, she couldn't focus on the painful memories of her parents. She needed to be in the present, not the past.

"We'll position the infrared cameras," Kazuya informed her, and she snapped to attention, "four of them will go on the first and second-floor hallways, and one will be stationed at the entrance."

Yuki nodded her agreement, and he motioned towards the cameras. She hadn't realized that he had brought them in. She easily grabbed two and he did the same. She would've taken the first floor but there seemed to have been an unspoken understanding that he would do that. She would think that he knew she was injured, but that was wishful thinking. Then again, she could've scraped up her knee to the point where her sock had gotten torn. She didn't know, and she didn't want to ask. She shook her head and put up the cameras where he wanted them. It hadn't taken long and soon she was giving Bones gentle pats on the head as she waited for him to return. He was quick and ignored her to pick up the clipboard and write something down.

"Was there anything else?" She quietly asked.

"You may go home now, we're done for today," He answered, not even looking up as he continued to write, "the cameras will do the rest of the work."

"Okay, have a nice night, Kazuya-kun," She said before she picked up Bones's leash and began to head out with the golden retriever.

She didn't get an answer from him, not that she was expecting one. Bones bumped into her leg as she slowly got distracted by her thoughts. She was brought out of them and gave the dog a thankful look before turning her attention towards her surroundings. The last time she got distracted and didn't pay attention to her surroundings she had been killed. An icy feeling took hold of her chest, and she shuddered at the sensation. Her death caused her some distress, and it was hard to shake off. She couldn't help but miss normal human conversation, but it was such a small part of her. She got all the social interaction she needed from Bones. A small voice in the back of her mind grouched at her to go out and find someone, that she spent too much time in the dorm. Marie, right that had been her name before she died. Her eyes widened slightly as she realized the voice had been her oldest friend and dormmate. Lilith, of all the people that she could be thinking about it just had to be her. Lilith had wanted her to be happy, it didn't matter if it was with a male or female. She had never found a more supportive friend, though she did say that if she continued to be such a grouch then she was going to be stuck with a narcissist for the rest of her life. She wouldn't put it past Lilith to have jinxed her in that manner. It would be just like the universe. It'd be ironic if she ended up with Kazuya of all people, though she didn't want to further her jinx.
