Summary: What if Liz doesn't call Damon to give her speech at her funeral, but Klaus.

Today's Special

"A fool is one who admires other cities without visiting Rome."

~Francesco Petrarca, Italian Poet

Is she really going to do this?

Is she going to call the man who terrorized the people of Mystic Falls back, to give her eulogy.

Yes she is.

For her daughter.

Liz stared at the folded piece of paper she had found in her daughter's room.

There was a number on the paper, and underneath it, a message. And the message on it steeled her will further.

If you ever need me. Don't hesitate to call.

- Klaus

He clearly couldn't care less about the lives of humans, or the people he terrorized. But he does care about her daughter.

The sheriff of Mystic Falls took a deep breath, and dialed the number.

It rang a few times before Klaus picked it up. "Hello Sheriff." He greeted a little too cheerfully.

Liz blinked down at her screen, how the hell did he-

"If you're wondering why I have your number. Well, I believe it's always best to be ready for any possible situation." The hybrid answered her unspoken question.

Liz sighs, "I'm dying."

Klaus pauses on the other end, mostly because he knew how devastated Caroline would be. "And let me guess. You want to use your daughter's connection to me to get me to help?"

Liz instantly turned furious. "No! Of course not. I'm happy to die a normal death. My time has come, and I don't want any interference of any kind." She glared, wishing she could empty a revolver full of vervain soaked wooden bullets into the hybrid's body. "But Caroline…" she trailed off, voice showing her exhaustion and fear.

Klaus paused on the other end, impressed. She didn't hesitate to shout at him. And he could tell it wasn't because she was on her deathbed either. This was the same woman who stared him down and threatened to kill him if he ever hurt her daughter again.

He can definitely see where Caroline got her personality from.

"Then why are you calling the Sheriff?" He asked.

"I want you to come to the funeral." Liz said, leaning against the bed frame.

Klaus raised an eyebrow, "I wasn't aware we were close?"

"We aren't." Liz scoffed. "But when I die. Caroline's going to need someone to rely on."

Klaus sighed, "Well hate to break it to you Sheriff. But I'm not exactly allowed back in Mystic Falls."

Liz looked surprised, until she quickly realized that there was only one person who could bend the hybrid to their will.

Her daughter.

"Really? Not even for your future mother-in-law's blessing?" She asked. Klaus stopped walking, surprised. "Look. I can't stand the things you've done since you've come into my town. But for my daughter's happiness, I am willing to put up with them, as long as she is. I know her. She truly loves you, and will come around eventually. But you know that too, don't you? You were always playing the long game from the beginning."

"I'll come." Klaus agrees, seriously.

Liz nods, "Good. On that note. I need you to tell her something for me…"

"Do you know who's giving the eulogy?" Damon asked, frowning. He could have sworn Liz would have chosen him.

Caroline shook her head. "Mom said she called a friend. But didn't tell me who."

Damon's question was soon answered when they watched in shock as Klaus Mikaelson walked up to the podium.

"No way." Damon shook his head in disbelief.

"This has to be a joke." Elena protested.

They turned to Caroline, but the blond hadn't taken her eyes off of him since he first came into her view. He was dressed in a three piece black suit, with his hair brushed back. He hadn't changed a bit since Caroline last saw him. That time being the afternoon they spent scarring the mystic falls rabbit population, and knocking down the trees in the forest.

Klaus stood at the front, his eyes instantly locking with the blond baby vampire. "I didn't know Liz Forbes that well." He began. "In her last moments, she asked me to pass along a message to her daughter, Caroline."

Caroline's breath caught.

This was real.

Her mother had really called Klaus of all people.

For her…

"Your mom wanted you to know how proud of you she was, and she should be." Klaus spoke. "You're a beautiful, strong woman, a generous friend, and a bright light in a sea of darkness."

Caroline knew he meant every word. She would see it in his eyes, that had never once left hers.

"She said you were extraordinary, and you are, and so was she. Liz was a hero to this town. She was a hero to all of you. And in her final moments, she earned my respect. Goodbye, Sheriff. You will be missed." The hybrid finished, nodding in respect.

He meant it. Not just because she had brought his light into this world, but also because in her final moments, she truly earned his respect. Very few have ever earned his respect despite the thousand years he spent on this earth. He was proud to say that Liz Forbes had done it.

Caroline looked down, her eyes glossing over. She and her mother hadn't always had the best relationship, especially after the divorce and finding out she was a vampire.

But over the recent years, they had finally begun building bridges and had gotten closer.

And now she is gone.

She knew her mother loved her.

She was sure of it.

But hearing those words.

Especially from Klaus…

At the moment, she knew.

She was her mother's first choice.

She is Klaus' first choice.

With one speech, they had both shown her that.

Caroline entered her room to see Klaus casually sprawled across her bed, the first three buttons of his shift were left open, with his bowtie long gone.

"What are you doing here?" She asked, missing her usual fire as a result of her exhaustion.

Klaus sprang up and prawled up to her. "You know exactly why I'm here Caroline."

The blond felt her knees almost buckle under the look he was giving her.

He wasn't angry… his azure eyes were just filled with sadness.

Of course he had faaigured it out. Why she insisted on doing so quickly.

Everything in one day.

Because she didn't want to face tomorrow.

Her friends still had no idea.

But he had taken one look at her, and saw right through her.

Knew what she was planning to do.

"What are you doing back here?" She asked, wanting to change the topic. "You promised you wouldn't come back."

Klaus knew what she was doing, but decided it was better to let her change the topic.

One day, he intended to ask her why she felt such the need to give up her humanity. But that day didn't have to be today.

"Your mother invited me." He told her honestly.

"So she really asked you to give that speech?" Caroline demanded.

Klaus smiled, "Why? Is it really that hard to believe?"

"Uh, yeah." Caroline answered bluntly. "The first time you met her. You had just ordered a kid she knew since he was little, to bite her daughter. I don't exactly see a lot of lost love between you guys."

"You weren't supposed to come back." She said softly. It would have been so much easier. By now, her switch would have been flipped, and she wouldn't have all these feelings.

But with Klaus here. It would be impossible. Whenever he was around, she had all these feelings swarming around inside of her.

Not only that.

He made her want to feel every single one of them.

"Well I did have my future mother-in-law's blessing." He teased her, gently brushing the back of his hand against her cheek.

Caroline's eyes widened in surprise. "What?"

Klaus chuckled, "Her words. Not mine."

Klaus' eyes softened. "She wanted me to make sure that you wouldn't turn it off. And I was more than happy to help."

The pair stood together in silence.

It had been months since he last saw her, and for all Klaus knew. It could be decades before he ever saw her again. So he intended to use this time to remember every tiny detail, as if he didn't have a hundred drawings of her from their time in Mystic Falls alone.

Klaus smiled sadly, knowing that it was time to leave. But just as he was about to walk past her, Caroline reached out and grabbed his hand, surprising herself, just as much as she surprised him.

"Does your offer for Rome still stand?" Caroline asked quietly. "I may not be ready for the noise of Tokyo, or what Paris would mean." She confessed. "But I think I'm ready to start in Rome."

Klaus smiled and wrapped his arms around her comfortingly. "Rome it is."

I liked the words of the speech, but never the fact that it was Caroline's abuser who was giving them. So I decided to switch it out for Klaus.

I've also been reading so many Klaroline fics. So now whenever I watch TVD, I'm like "Wait, what? Elena's the main character! Why?" Like it just feels odd to see TVD, not centered on Caroline and Klaroline.

Also, I just really loved this video. It was so beautifully edited. It was like reading a fanfic about Caroline finding out Klaus got Hayley pregnant. (And none of the scenes were choppy.)

Anyways,

KLAROLINE FOR LIFE BECAUSE I WILL GO DOWN WITH THIS SHIP!
