He pulled her closer, claws brushing her hair away from her shoulder before leaning down, the shivers beginning anew as he kissed the junction of her neck. "You are so quick to defend a kingdom that abandoned you."

Kagome shook her head but didn't pull away. How was it every little touch felt like it was the first time? Her mind strained to keep itself on track, to not focus on the growing need to drag him away from the house.

And he knew, a soft chuckle tickling her skin. Kagome flushed, managing to turn her head enough to meet his gaze. "I think I've got more to worry about with Kagura than anyone at the castle. And they didn't abandon me; you said we were sent here as protection."

His cheek slid against hers before he straightened. "Indeed. But if I had been able—"

She gave his hair a sharp tug. "If I can forgive you, then you can forgive yourself." Emotion swirled deep in his amber eyes, and she raised her chin, daring him to say otherwise, and he surprised them both by chuckling outright.

"Such a demanding mate you are."

"Guess you better get used to it," she said, poking him in the chest. "Especially if we're going to be living together."

His raised eyebrow belied the shock simmering under the surface, and she bit her lip to keep from laughing. Was it really so easy to get under his skin?
