Auggie's POV

I'm lying awake in my bed, staring at the ceiling. I can't sleep. I think something's wrong with Ava; I can feel it. I woke up with that feeling.

I got out of bed. I looked over at my side table and saw my promise ring. I put it on. I slowly opened my bedroom door, making sure not to make it squeak. I went down to the living room and walked out the front door, closing it behind me. I walked down the hall to Ava's door. I exhaled and knocked on the door.

Judy (Ava's mom) answered only a second later.

"August…"

"Is Ava awake?" I asked her.

She looked behind her and back at me.

"Yes," she replied. "How did you know?"

"I had a feeling," I said. "It woke me up. Is she okay?"

She looked hesitant to answer.

"No," she finally answered. She moved out of the doorway and let me walk in. "Does your mother know you're here?"

"No," I admitted. "I just think Ava might need me."

She looked back to the hall, then to me. She closed the door.

"I'm going to notify your mother," she said. I nodded in understanding. She looked towards her hallway. "She is in her room."

I walked towards the hall; hearing Judy hit call with a beep of her phone.

Ava's POV

I kept wiping my eyes, trying to stop my tears. It wasn't working in the slightest. I heard a knock on the door.

"Mom, I said I'm fine," I said. "Just leave me alone."

"It's me," I heard my boyfriend's voice say from the other side of my door, "and you wouldn't be crying if you were fine."

I stood up off my bed and walked to my door. I opened it and he walked in.

"What are you doing here?" I questioned him. "It's four in the morning."

"I couldn't sleep," he told me. "I could feel something was wrong."

I furrowed my brows.

"You could feel it?"

I wiped my eyes again, this time being able to wipe the tears away.

"Yeah," he said. "What's going on?"

I walked back to my bed and sat back down. He sat next to me.

"It still hurts, Auggie," I said. "It's been two years."

He interlocked his fingers with mine. I saw that he had his ring on. He looked at my calendar, it's February 1st, 2023.

"That's when it happened?"

"Yeah," I responded. I picked up the ultrasound off of my dresser. I handed it to him. "They gave me this the day I found out I was pregnant. They asked if I wanted to see the baby, but said that it was understandable if I didn't because…you know. I was so happy when I saw the baby and heard the heartbeat. When I heard it, I knew I wanted it…" I looked down at the ultrasound, tears filled in my eyes again. "This is the only picture I have of…" I trailed off.

He stared at the ultrasound, then looked at me, tears now threatening to escape his eyes.

"You would have been a great mom to him or her," he told me.

"It shouldn't affect me anymore," I tried to convince myself. "I shouldn't think about it anymore."

"KC's still affected," he reminded me, "you know that, and it's been five years with her. Both her and Lucas' mom are still affected by Jaxon's death, too. You shouldn't forget about it. KC said it gets easier, but you need to let people in."

"KC's still affected by Jaxon's death?"

"Yeah," he confirmed. "Farkle told me that. It's not that often, but he says it still hurts her sometimes. He said that she cried on Aaron's 8th birthday after he and Brooklyn went to sleep because she was reminded that it's been eight years since he died."

"I didn't know that," I said. "You know what I thought about earlier?"

"What's that?"

"I thought of a name for the baby that would have worked for either a boy or a girl," I said. "I think it might be pointless to name the baby now, though."

"If it helps you, I don't think it's pointless," he told me.

"Angel," I said the name. I looked directly at him. "Angel Matthews."

He smiled.

"I like that," he said.

He looked at the ultrasound. He stood up and grabbed a black marker off of my dresser, wrote something on the bottom of the picture and handed it back to me. He had written Angel Matthews below the ultrasound.

"Auggie?" I asked looking at it.

"What?" He questioned, sitting next to me again.

"What if we break up again?"

"We won't," he said. "We're going to make this work, because I'm never going to break this promise to you." He held up his right hand to show his ring. "I love you. I want to be with you for the rest of my life."

"Remember what we promised in our 'wedding vows'?" I questioned, with a smile.

He smiled, amused.

"We promised to never make each other feel bad," he said. "Well, we screwed that up."

We laughed a little. I stood up and put on my ring, then sat back down.

"I love you," I told him.

"I love you, too."

Judy's POV

"He felt that something was wrong," Topanga commented back to me. "He really is in love with her. He wouldn't be able to feel those types of things if he wasn't. Riley and Auggie are completely different. Riley had a fairy tale idea of love for a long time, until she really met Andrew; Auggie and Ava grew together and neither of them really ever had that idea- they both have matured so much. It took Riley so long to grow up, which was partially my and Cory's faults, but Auggie grew a lot faster because of your daughter."

"He also made her grow," I told August's mother. "I, on the other hand, held her back by how I treated her. I was trying to seem like the best mother, which, in turn, made me a horrible one. Your family changed her for the better, and I can't thank you enough for that."

"You just went about it the wrong way, Judy," she told me. "I have a lot of respect for you now. You have grown your relationship with her."

"I know what she was crying about, even though she wouldn't tell me," I told her.

There was silence for a bit. I knew that Topanga realized what day it is when she simply said:

"Oh."

"Two years," I said. "That was the most broken expression I have ever seen on my daughter's face in her entire life."

"I'm glad she has Auggie," Topanga told me. "Would you mind taking him to school?"

"It would be no problem, Topanga," I agreed.

"Thank you," she said.

I saw on my phone that it was 5am. I looked in my daughter's room through the crack in the door and saw my daughter and her boyfriend sitting on her bed. Her head was on his shoulder. They were holding hands. Then I saw the ultrasound on their laps.

"Actually, Topanga," I said into the phone, "I think, maybe, they should stay here for the day."

I heard her exhale.

"She probably needs it," Topanga agreed. "You two should come over for dinner tonight, then."

"I'm sure Ava would like that," I accepted her offer. "Goodbye, Topanga."

"Goodbye, Judy," she responded. We both hung up.
